There is no rise in anything but population and internet access. Most humans function on herd information relay. Most people on this site don't even understand their own viewpoints, they repeat what sounded nice and got upvotes. Since the internet made it accessible, these ideas tend to be shared. So while before everyone was a special crazy snowflake, everyone today shares their delusions instead.

That is the bias you're falling for. You are noticing it because you're hearing the same things over and over again. While before everyone had their own bizarre pattern recognition resolved fixation and were invisible to anyone passing by, now people shouting "aliens made the pyramids" a self induced whistle blow they're crazy. What you're noticing that is new is you are hearing the same ideas over and over again.

If you don't believe me, it is because you work at an educated job. As a line cook, I promise you most people are fucking stupid. They over consume and knowingly don't understand the world around them and they don't care. You can tell them anything and like information parasites they pretend they understand and try to spread that information to others for intellectual validation. No, they have no ability to fact check, they don't know if they're spreading misinformation. They tend to fall for misinformation themselves because everyone wants to have that magical "paradox trivia" to just "blow people's minds" with their smarts. This is why urban myths spread, the crazier they sound the more believable they are to these people
