Suicide is truly heartbreaking 💔 Sometimes people struggle in ways they don't know how to communicate, and we never know what battles someone is fighting behind closed doors. Checking in on others at any point in time can make a world of difference.

Scary thing is do you know if youre struggling that bad, is it just a switch that happens? It scares me sometimes because life is a struggle and I'm not sure if there are signs....

For me at least it was a long journey from “I can’t do this” to “I have to get out” to “I’m going to do it”. Maybe like a year or so. Happy to say I’m still here, even after a few more suicidal periods of my life. And I’m so happy I’m still here. I would have missed out on so much.

I’m glad I’m here too!!!! I have a beautiful daughter and a handsome husband and a lovely cat. My life is perfectly average and it’s everything I could have dreamed out. I’m so glad I pushed and pushed. And so glad my first attempt didn’t work.

I showed my husband the pic of him that was posted here and stared at him. He said “did he die??… how? Complications?” I read comments and whipped my head back to him with wide eyes and he whispered “suicide?… wow”.
We’ve rewatched the series 3-4 times in 11yrs and both had watched it before then before meeting. Very sad day 😕💔

He was an amazing advocate for actors with disabilities, and Bryan Cranston has always been noted to be a kind and caring cast member. I hate this for all of them.
22
u/HiRollnGuy 1h ago
As a paralyzed person for almost 50 years, I'm always disappointed at the tiny, almost non-existent number of truly disabled actors and next-to-zero representation onscreen. Now this tragedy. It's heartbreaking.

Fuuuuuck depression.
113
u/pettylabelle1083 3h ago
I have MDD and depression is a nasty beast. I think a lot of us live in fear of the day that may come where it just becomes too much. It could arrive so suddenly. I’ve been fortunate enough to survive many of those days but you always wonder what’s around the corner. He was planning to meet Bryan for lunch, clearly was thinking ahead and then just boom, gone. Depression makes actors of us all. We wear the mask so well, it’s second nature. My heart is with everyone struggling with depression and RJ’s death. Hits home.
23
u/BorgerKingLettuce 2h ago
I am in remission from MDD after suffering basically my entire teenage years and early 20s. I remember that feeling of wanting to die so well, it is all-consuming and feels impossible to escape. My heart fucking breaks knowing how he felt. May he rest in peace after having to carry that for so long </3
9
u/pettylabelle1083 1h ago
I’m happy for you! I’m in remission as well but it took rTMS to achieve that and I know I am fortunate to live in a country that prioritizes mental health. I suffered with it hard for more than a decade. Throughout it though, I never lost hope that there was something better waiting on the other side of it. I told my therapist the moment she truly has to fear for her patients with depression is when they say they are out of hope. Something I’ve had to learn and accept is that I’m in this for life and there’s going to be peaks and valleys. It’s about learning and building a toolkit that helps you during the valleys that makes all the difference.

One thing that's for sure is that RJ Mitte is gonna go down in history as a TV legend. The best scene in Ozymandias, the greatest episode in television history, rests on his performance just as much as Bryan Cranston's and Anna Gunn's.
390
u/lucia912 4h ago
You’re 10000% correct. Ozymandias is a masterpiece thanks to Bryan, Anna AND RJ. He was absolutely stellar and I always cry during his scene in it. It was raw and pure. I am so incredibly sad over his passing.
245
u/TLMAriel1989 4h ago
His reaction to the heartbreaking revelations about his father’s crimes and taking action to save his mother were so effective and pivotal to the scene and the remainder of the series. That shot of Flynn and Skyler absolutely terrified for their lives after Walt screams, “WE’RE A FAMILY!”, with Holly crying in the background, will be forever haunting no matter how many times you watch it 🥺
63
u/CriticalFlatworm9 TRANS RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS 3h ago edited 51m ago
It definitely does, because it's so pivotal to the show itself. It finally sets the last part of the thesis of the show into place--Walter is a monster. He has become a true monster. No matter how much he was "cool dad" buying Walt jr cars, no matter how much Skyler was a "bitch" mom, Walt jr sees him for what he is. In the moment, he doesn't hesitate to defend his mother or call the cops. I think it's a scene so vital to the show itself but also to say to the viewer, "even if you think Skyler is a bitch, she is nothing compared to the monster of Walter White."
RJ Mitte gave us so many episodes of amazing performance. Hearing of him passing like this is truly devastating.

1
80
u/gumball_00 2h ago
Sad thing is, you'd hear often how these TV/movie "parents" are more parental figures in those child actors' lives than the actual parents of those children.
11
u/bulk_logic 30m ago
Apparently his mom had a bad accident that left her paralyzed and he has been supporting her and his sister since he was 13, before he was on Breaking Bad. His business manager also stole all of his tax payments for years that had him owing the IRS a lot of money. He never really had a chance to be a kid.
-7
u/SuckMyRedditorD 44m ago
Be careful to dwell on fiction for matters subject to reality.
It is far more difficult being a real parent (or child of a parent) than being one written by highly talented writers and acted by highly talented actors.
25
u/pettylabelle1083 3h ago
He just seems like a man who has reached such heights as an actor and has never lost sight of who he truly is. Seems like a sweet man who cares a lot for others. He was just 14 when he met Bryan and someone paternal like that would probably remember him as a kid in his heart. Hollywood needs men like Bryan so much. He’s a rarity.

My great aunt was 99 in early 2021 in the heat of covid, so we were all worried about her health.
Unrelated, I was feeling kinda weird and was mostly staying in bed, while it was hard to breathe and keep food down while sitting at a table. I also had some testicular pain. Did so many covid tests and went to a few doctor's appointments and there seemed to be nothing wrong.
My aunt ended up getting a stroke, being in the hospital for a couple weeks, and dying. She also had a very small funeral service of 10 people, not the big funeral at the church she deserved, with all the people whose lives she touched. No Catholic nine nights and forty days traditions either. I wasn't able to see her at the hospital or attend anything and it made me so sad.
A few weeks later, I felt something under my ribcage and I went for a CT scan. Stage IV kidney cancer. Been fighting it for the five years since then. (Yes, I immediately thought about Breaking Bad upon being diagnosed.)
I often wonder, if I wasn't sick with a vague illness, whether my parents would have been over there earlier that day and got her better care, and she might have made it to 100. She was very spry, witty, and sharp as a tack before the stroke.
There are a thousand things in the past I go back and overthink whether things could have turned out differently. I really, really wish they could.
9
u/sileegranny 1h ago
I'm from a big family that lost someone to suicide. EVERYONE wonders if there wasn't something they could have done leading up to it that could have changed that day.
The answer, I think is.. maybe?
The thing though is that suicide isn't like getting in an auto accident or some other chance occurrence; usually it's a chronic mental disorder that at some point overflows containment.
Maybe there was something you could have done to stop the suicide on that day, in that way. And maybe you would have spent many days, weeks, months or years holding back the flood, if you could.
But you are one person, without foreknowledge, without infinite attention, resources or stamina. You can't save every person in the world in need of aid, just as you can't save one person in need of aid all the time.
34
u/Deadsoup77 3h ago
I can’t imagine. Not to blame RJ at all, but the thought of people I know wondering if they could have done something has stopped me multiple times…

I believe it’s recently back as of a few weeks ago. Also, call centers for the lifeline are generally run locally. In my state, our call centers are still providing training to support queer callers. Doesn’t undo the harm this admin is doing, but many orgs locally are stepping up to make sure 988 staff are trained

It breaks my heart that RJ got swindled out of the money he earned from breaking bad. Hollywood needs better resources to help young actors with their finances.
124
u/thrwy98710 3h ago
Just noting that it was his business manager pocketing/embezzling the $$$ and not that Breaking Bad swindled him in case people wonder.
3
u/DoubleDisk9425 1h ago
I hear he also got paid like shit, fully apart from the swindling. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.
3
u/bulk_logic 22m ago
He made around $400k for the last season while Bryan got around $3.5m, Anna Gunn made around $1.5. Could he have gotten paid more? Yeah. Is it shit? Not at all.

Well he was a supporting character but also appeared in most of the episodes. The killer was probably his money manager stealing 8-10% of his tax income the entire time and the debt accruing

How incredibly heartbreaking. Mental health is such a double-edged sword. When someone takes their own life, there is a lot of survivor's guilt that is left and always thinking if there was something that you could have done to made things better. RJ sounds like he was an amazing person in RL, too. I wish they were able to have that lunch and maybe reminded him that he was loved and not alone. Please check on your people. Even if you don't know their personal battles and struggles, tell your people that you love them and that they can always call you no matter what and really mean it. It could make all the difference. Rest in Power, RJ.

Bryan Cranston always seems so well loved by the people he works with and he seems like a thoughtful guy. This is really sad and moving. Because when this happens and you just wonder could I have done anything? Would anything have changed this?
I did not watch the show, but 34 years old and the depression or whatever circumstances led him there, that’s always incredibly sad, especially as someone who’s been through making those plans myself years ago.

u/z__1010 1h ago
You should - it's exactly as good as the internet has hyped it to be.
But Walt Jr. is his own character, it's great. He has his own struggles and developments, but it's never like "oh AJ is a disappointment to Tony Soprano's plans" or "oh Sally interrupted Don Draper's meeting."
No, he's just a good teen aged kid making the best of bad hand - unlike his dad who can't grasp that sometimes mistakes happen (Grey Matter comes to mind)

I’m so familiar with Cranston’s voice at this point I read it that way in my head. Currently sobbing and hurting for everyone he was able to touch.
He was my favorite character and I always wondered if he’d every pursue any other acting gigs 💔

my boyfriend (of 2 yrs)'s son has cerebral palsy and he's 4 yrs old🤎 my boyfriend and i rewatched breaking bad together (after we first saw it on our own many many years ago) and he was struck by how much more he loved Walt Jr and how much joy he found his character this time around, incl. Rj in real life, because what wonderful representation of CP!!!! i saw RJ passed today and I was dreading telling my bf because I assumed it was health complications and how upsetting that'd be for him to hear w/ his constant concerns of his son's future! Also, RJ and my boyfriend are the same age so that aspect compounds..... when i saw the real reason, may have been worse if such a thing is possible idk i'm ranting on here
absolutely fucking gutted to hear RJ died by suicide. what a massive massive loss to the world. may he rest in the sweetest peace & power 🤎🤎🤎

Celebrity suicides can be especially triggering to people already at risk.
You are not alone. You are not the only one experiencing pain and sadness right now. Use your supports and resources and protective factors as much as you need. You deserve grace and support and the chance to feel better. You deserve to move forward in life, past that deadly impulse. We can love you until you're able to love you.

I don’t know him that much if at all, but suicide is a big topic in my life for right now.
I had probably the longest conversation about my grandfathers suicide with my grandmother just this week. I learned new things about that day and it was probably the first time we sat there for a long time not changing the topic for comfort and both just cried for what we missed and our pain . it’s been months and months and this shit sucks just as bad as it did the day it happened.
It all horrible and I still have to do one day at a time. And then sometimes I think to myself all my pain still isn’t even comparable to my grandmothers or even my grandfathers pain that caused the action.
The only good thing about is I no longer have the desire to plan and complete suicide. Im not great mentally , but seeing all the persons affected is some sort of therapy to keep myself here.
I hope his family and friends are able to find peace and don’t place blame on themselves.
Rest in peace RJ
