Subreddit Meta Concrit Commune - October 10

Welcome to the Concrit Commune, where you can get bits of your fic looked at... for a small "price."

For the purposes of this thread, concrit is defined as - pointing out things that could use improvement and also giving suggestions on how to do so. Compliments are always welcome, of course but these do not count towards your concrit requirement.

The rules:

  • State your Fandom | Title | Rating | Any Applicable Content Warnings | Link - AO3, FFN, etc. at the top of the comment.
  • Post a few paragraphs (copy and paste to a comment, please) of your fic, or your plot premise, or your character bio, or your world building, whatever you need help with.
  • There is a soft limit of 500 words. Not your whole fic.
  • Please post an outside link to underage and extreme-explicit violence/rape content. Try Just Paste Me which includes rich text options.
  • If you, the author, are looking for something specific - the phrasing of a particular part or if a character's reaction is believable - please ask!
  • If you just want to hand out advice without throwing your own fic in, you're quite welcome to.
  • If you post part of your fic you must give concrit to someone else in the thread within 24 hours of posting your excerpt!

Since we're all here to give and receive help from other people, a certain level of respect for the author and the work they've put into their fic is expected as a baseline courtesy and should be reciprocated.

Tearing into a fic or author without regard for their effort isn't constructive even if there is decent criticism attached. Moreover, it discourages people from participating if they know that insults await them.

You aren't expected to treat this thread like the Comment Cooperative, advice and honesty and pointing out flaws is what we're here for.

Some helpful tips to keep things running smoothly:

  • Keep your comments helpful to the author, not just smashing out your opinion.
  • Be polite and civil.
  • Be kind. At a minimum, showing your peers professional courtesy is expected.
  • Phrases like "I think" or "I believe" can lighten your tone.
  • Elaborating on why you think something could be changed is not only more useful to the author but keeps statements from being abrupt.

Timezone Changes

As you can see, the post time will shift by 6 hours every month. If there are any inconsistencies in the times, please let us know in modmail so we can fix it up!

Writing Questions Why can’t I finish anything I write

Why can’t I finish anything I write? I have so many ideas and I’ve started plenty of fics in the past few months but finished NONE OF THEM it’s like the moment I get past the first few paragraphs my motivation gets zapped out of my body. Is this just writers block or something else?

Quick edit: I do have an adhd diagnosis sorry I forgot to mention that 😭. HOWEVER I am medicated and it works to help me get motivated enough to do school work and do work but for some reason when I comes to doing things I consider to be my fun hobbies I can bring myself to do it

Venting writing after months of not doing it feels so frustrating but there's no other choice but to push through it

• Upvotes

The closest feeling I can relate to it is like relearning to ride a bicycle after years of not doing it. You're likely going to fall, fail to break at the right moment, get scrapes and scratches, but if you're just going to stop there, you're never going to successfully learn it.

Writing after a hiatus just feels so tiresome. It surprises me how much "thinking" is actually required compared to other things like reading where, of course thinking is also a given, but you're mostly consuming and storing the information inside your head. The action is mostly passive. But with writing, it's you who has to retrieve what you've already known and apply the damn thing into a story. If there's something you don't know, then you either hand-wave it or research the stuff—which often then causes me to sidetrack and get distracted.

Along with that, I recently had the terrible reminder of how much effort it takes to write a hundred words, let alone thousands. Then of course, after that process comes the editing where your few handful of words could easily be reduced back to zero. And then there's also probably a writer's (or perhaps any other creative's) worst enemy: their inner critic and desire to have every little thing sound "perfect".

It's frustrating and nearly tiresome. The silver lining though is that I am enjoying the process of relearning. I just hope that I can push through it without being too weighed down by the expectations of my own self and the imaginary audience of critics.

Writing Questions Self-protective gestures? Alternatives to "hugging her arms to chest"?

I'm trying to write a character having a very emotionally vulnerable moment.

Are there any other self-protective gestures that might work?

Thanks to anyone who can help!

Writing Questions Why do some people lose interest once the characters get together in a fic?

I've seen some comments/posts about how people lose interest and get bored once the main characters get together in a slow burn, which I haven't really experienced myself before, so if you're one of those people can you explain what causes that? I don't mean it in a judgemental way, I'm more so trying to find out WHY so I can try and avoid boring my own readers lol since I've also seen people say that it's a writing issue.

Recs Wanted Would like to read some in-universe fanfics or fandom culture

Dont care what its about, if its ships or whatnot. What I want, however, is the insanity of the average fandom about whatever theyre writing about—either smth real (like people writing about MCU Spiderman and hen getting hot flame wars and debates post-Far From Home events) or smth fictitious for either us to in-universe, show-within-a-show (like Luz Noceda writing for The Good Witch Azura and getting the AO3 curse inflicted upon her)

Some fandoms I could think of that can have this applied are Marvel, DC, Miraculous Ladybug, Danny Phantom, and any media with visible characters with secret identities, but Ill take whatever fandom!

Recs Wanted Recs for Call of Duty Ghost/Soap?

I'm looking for Ghost/Soap fanfics. I'm down to read most anything, but I'd particularly love fics that explore Ghost being claustrophobic from his time in the grave (or just angst in general). I love a good panic attack fanfic. I'd rather no AU, but if it's really good I'll read it anyway :)) thank you in advanced <3

Activities and Events Excerpt Game: Actions

Happy Monday! Let's play another game!

Post a top level comment with a one- to four-word prompt (or at least a brief one). Prompt should be a brief description of an action. Something like "pat someone's shoulder" or "smile at a child" or "eat ice cream".

Reply to suggestions by posting/writing an excerpt containing that word. Let's try to keep them under 500 to 600 words, but of course use your best judgement as some passages require more for the sake of context.

Separate context headers are optional.

(NOTE: All content is welcome but per rules 7 and 12 of the sub, NSFW excerpts may not be shared as plain text (even if it's spoilered). If you would like to share these, use an external text sharing tool like justpasteit and link it here with a clear warning.)

Upvote the excerpts you enjoy, and leave a comment. Try to at least respond to people who left excerpts on the words you suggested, but the more people you respond to the better. If you don't know the fandom, you can still comment on someone's writing style or whatever else impressed you. ❤️ WE ALL WANT A LITTLE LOVE FOR OUR WRITING, DON'T WE? ❤️

Recs Wanted Looking for Vanillamace

Hi, idk where to post this so if I can’t ask this question here lmk and I will delete this. I’m looking for fics based on the Twitch streamer Vanillamace and I can’t seem to find none anywhere. Maybe I’m over looking it or maybe there truly isn’t any but I wanted to do this as my last hope.

Please and thank you!

Discussion How can you get writer friends?

I recently started reading and writing fanfics about an anime, and I get really bored sometimes because I don't have anyone to talk to about this fics, laugh about them (I read fluffy, funny fics, I love romcoms sometimes, or angst) or crashing out in the plost twists.

I had left comments to authors in their fics so they know I enjoyed theirs works, but it's not like that ends in a friendship, just a short connection moment between author and reader.

I'm little of a overthinker, and idk if this is the right flag, just wanted to know, English is not my first language, sorry if it was a question that doesn't go here, thank you!

Writing Questions Writing a 19th century long-distance relationship

Hi all! Have you written about/experienced long-distance relationship to know what might go wrong? Like what might the couple fight about?

Have been writing this fic where the most recent chapter is the two mc's reuniting after a year of separation and communication only by letters. The tricky part is my fic is staged in early 19th century so I can't use a lot of the tropes that only work in a modern setting. They were together for a few days before they had to be separated again.

I kind of want them to clash a bit during that meeting but am stuck here thinking of a good cause of conflict. Wondering how you all might approach it?

Writing Questions Fake social media apps that can be used with friends?

• Upvotes

I've been talking with a friend about doing a social media story, but neither of us wants to dedicate a chat or new accounts on Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp, etc to this. We thought about mock up apps, but most of the ones I've encountered are for a single person. Is there one of those we can use, where we can get the interface of multiple apps but both of us can add text?

Venting nice comment got deleted under my fic

okay guys i wrote a fanfiction and received comments that made my heart warm and made me feel super happy. i went back to read them today, and noticed two of them had been deleted and that's got me a bit anxious. have you ever experienced/done something similar and if so, what would be your reason? I guess it just broke my heart a little bit, I did pour a lot of effort and love into that piece (it sounds corny i know!!) Did they regret the comment, read the fic again and though it was bad?

edit: maybe for clarification, it wasn't on ao3 but tumblr and i know for sure that at least one wasn't a bot?

Lost Fic looking for a naruto crossover fic post 4th war ninjas end up in dc universe [multiple fandoms - naruto + dcu]

hi everyone, I'm trying to find a fic where during the fight with kaguya the naruto reality is destroyed and everyone is sent to the dc universe

I know that most, if not all, of the fic is from dc characters perspectives, it starts with a few people falling from the sky around the world, then we find out they're shinobi and that the only reason they survived is because they were very strong. I remember that there was a scene with kiba and maybe tim? itachi is found in the arctic with frostbite. lots of the ninjas end up in their own town and one of the dc characters (maybe batman?) visits them. it might also be a small crossover with marvel because I remember there being a city floating in the sky and one of the shinobi there isn't scared because she'd been through the kyuubi attack. I think there's also a scene with kakashi and some other guy about his mask

if anyone has this fic or knows the name please let me know!! I really want to read it again

Writing Questions How do you guys write fanfics?

I'm new writing stories, and my first story I made is original but I don't wanna do just that. I wanna do fanfics too but the problem I have with that is I never get a character's personality correct to the canon lore, like what do you guys do, I'm always happy to learn.

Discussion I think the hate towards epithets (‘the blond,’ etc) is overblown

As with everything, there are limits. Epithets every sentence rather than a simple ‘he,’ ‘she,’ ‘they,’ or their name, can be distracting, but it seems as though the use in any amount is condemned to high hell by basically everyone 😭

I don’t get it, some of the best fics I’ve ever read use them pretty often, and I didn’t even notice them at all until I found out about the discourse and hate towards them. I noticed that old drafts and one-shots I wrote myself years ago use them every now and then, but reading those back, I don’t find it cringe or annoying to see them. Perhaps the peer pressure got to me, because I don’t use them anymore, but I’m not put off by writers who do.

Yeah, there are some examples that are a little weird—like ‘the pinkette’ is pretty funny. But in general, I dont think referring to a character as ‘older,’ or ‘taller’ deserves the hate it gets

Subreddit Meta Excerpt Extravaganza - October 12

Welcome to the Excerpt Extravaganza!

Much like its predecessor, Monologue Monday, this is a thread for posting pieces of fic.

You can still post your dialogue, or any other part of your fic you'd like to show off.

You can also post excerpts from fics you've read that you think were exceptional and need to be shared.

  • Limit is 10 line breaks, but use your judgement. Short and attention-grabbing is better than a long segment and people scrolling past.
  • State the Fandom | Rating | Any Applicable Content Warnings at the top of your comment!
  • Link to fic is welcome but optional.
  • Context is optional.

Discussion “Color? Green”

Hi I’m not sure if this is the right subreddit to be asking in but I recently read a fanfic that had one character ask “color?” And the other responds with “green” multiple times in that fanfic. Does anyone have any idea what that means? Is it a reference to something?

(Also not sure what to tag this so I hope this works)

Discussion How do i filter out romance fics on Ao3?

Like, i don't care if a fic has "Character X / Character Y" in the story, but i want to read some action and adventure fics, not "Story is just a love story and is only about these two characters falling in love"
