I went to an event site and it seemed to require that I stay inside a ridiculously small radius or the site would fail. Is the intent for me to be effectively motionless while completing the site, or did I misunderstand what was happening?

Same question here. Either sit stationary or orbit at 500 and hope it’s enough.

The destroyer I was flying literally could not orbit sharply enough to stay in the circle. Seems weird to me.

You can orbit the central spire. If you're drifting out of range, reduce speed.

Totally new here, is it better to join a corp right away or learn the basics solo first? I keep seeing mixed advice and don't want to mess up my first week.

There's enough "single player" gameplay to keep you occupied for a few weeks. Career agents, Blood Stained Stars, Mission Running, exploration in wormholes, maybe dabble in faction warfare.
The danger of joining a corp too early, even if it's otherwise a good group, is too much support. Like someone might just toss a couple hundred million isk your way completely undermining the fact that you'd toiled away for days to afford the gas harvesting skill book or whatever. And for bad groups, whether scams, abusive ones, or just empty husks, you don't have the ability to tell what is and isn't good.
The problem with not joining a corp though, other than the fact Eve is fundamentally a social game where people work together and you're locking yourself out of a lot of otherwise unimaginable content, is where you get information and advice from.
Youtube videos are often THE BEST SHIP EVER!!! high energy garbage for clicks. Even quality well meaning content can be geared for the extremes... "Now obviously you'll want a black glass and zeugma to one shot the hacking event."
Most "veterans" in the #rookie_help channel are new players stuck in highsec solo gameplay loops. Last week they got advice on how to advance their mission running career by blitzing into battleships, and now they're the ones giving out that advice because they don't know anything else.
I'd say take some time exploring the game on your own, but treat it almost like an extended new player experience where you see what interests you. Then, before committing too much into any one aspect of the game, or if you feel well situated, start looking for new player focused corps to unlock the social side. Eve Uni or NPSI fleets are always an option as well for a more partial step.

I have reached the limit of activities I can do without a corp. Pushing into the the rest of the activities without a corp is levels of stress I dont want for instance day tripping with a battleship into nullsec.

It’s up to you really. Joining the right corp will help speed up your learning a lot.

There's item traders scattered around, there's a list of locations in the event reward tracking window iirc

What perks (if any) besides winning the popularity contest and going to Greenland do CSMs get?
