This is from a US show, so I guess Americans call it military time. Which other countries do this? Does Canada call it military time too? What other common things have "military" in their names but are not used military connected?

🗣 Discussion / Debates I’m looking for advice on how to improve my English writing, particularly for professional documents

I’m looking for advice on how to improve my English writing, particularly for professional documents such as office memoranda, reports, and formal correspondence. I also want to improve my general English writing, including essays.
English is not my first language, and I’ve noticed a recurring problem in my writing. I can usually express my ideas and organize them logically, but my sentences sometimes sound unnatural, unnecessarily complicated, or awkwardly constructed.

Here is an example of my memo writing practice with chatgpt:

This Memorandum pertains to inventory of computer and printer conducted on October 8, 2026. Based on the inventory records, there should be 25 computer with the agency. However, there are only 22 computer upon audit. It is not clear yet if the difference is due to outdated records or due to change of office.
The supervisor is directed to conduct verification on records. A written report should be submitted within 3 working days.

🟡 Pronunciation / Intonation Does my "s" sound right?

Hi everyone! Quite a few people have pointed out that I have a mild lisp, and most of them say my “s” sounds a bit like “th”. I've been trying to fix it but I feel like it still doesn't sound quite right.

I can't really hear the difference between my s and a typical s, although I can tell the difference between th and s. I also noticed that I sometimes place my tongue behind my teeth or somewhere near them.

Here's a recording of me saying these words: so, house, sense, scissor, sister, six, speed, sit, message, yes, listen, grass, baseball, list, stop, street, missing, lesson, decide, soup, city.

I'd really appreciate any feedback on how my /s/ sounds and any advice on how to fix it. Thanks!

🗣 Discussion / Debates "I have many / a lot of hopes" Does this sound natural?

1. I have many hopes.

2. I have a lot of hopes.

Do these sound natural to native English speakers? The intent is to say that I have a large number of hopes. Not high hopes for someone or high expectations.

Thanks in advance!
