How do you handle culturally specific idioms that have zero direct equivalents in the target language?

Hi everyone! I’m currently studying translation and working on a small project about localization challenges.

I’m curious how professional translators handle idioms or culture-بased references (like local humor, regional expressions, or historical allusions) that simply don't exist in the target language. Do you usually go for a functional equivalent, add an explanatory note, or try to adapt it completely to fit the target culture?

I would love to hear about a specific tricky phrase or sentence you've had to translate recently and how you solved it. Your real-world experiences would be super helpful for my studies.

Does culture make translation more difficult?

Hi everyone!

I think translating cultural expressions can be challenging because some phrases make sense in one culture but sound strange in another.

How do you think translators should deal with these expressions? Should they translate them literally or explain their meaning in a more natural way?

I’d love to hear your opinions!

Can One Word Change How the World Sees a War?

Can a single translated word change how the world sees a war, a political leader, or an entire nation? If so, how much power should translators really have?

[English>Arabic] Can a translation be correct but still fail to deliver the real meaning?

Think about jokes, cultural expressions, or even simple words that carry special feelings in your language. Sometimes, the words can be translated perfectly, but the original meaning just doesn't feel the same.

Have you ever experienced this? Can you think of something in your language that is difficult to translate?

I'd genuinely love to hear your examples! Drop them in the comments ، let's learn something new from each other's languages and cultures!

In the 1980s, KFC brought "Finger Lickin' Good" to China—except the translation accidentally told people to "Eat your fingers off!" 🍗😂 What's your favorite brand translation fail? Let us know in the comments! #Shorts #KFC #TranslationFails

What is the hardest part of translating idioms between Arabic and English?

Hi everyone! I’m an English and translation student, and I have a question for professional translators.
What do you think is the hardest part of translating idioms between Arabic and English? Do you prefer to translate the meaning rather than the exact words?
I’d love to hear your experiences and examples. Thank you!

Can AI Really Replace Human Translators?

Hi everyone! I’m a translation student, and I need to ask a question here as part of one of my university assignments. I’d really appreciate it if translators could share their opinions or experiences.
Do you think AI will eventually replace human translators, or will human translators always be necessary? Why?
I’m interested in hearing from people who actually work in translation or have experience with it. Your answers would really help me with my assignment. Thank you!

Russian (?) meme

I have no idea what this meme could possibly mean. I use it often as a joke but the curiousity has taken over, I need to know…
Google translate says “tell me what it is to be an orphan” which I have a feeling isn’t quite right. I also didn’t know which sub to post this in so if you have any better ones to translate let me know. Thanks!

Chinese(?) Writing to English

Found this small item in a thrift store and wanted to use it for a craft, but I'd like to know the writing that was on it before painting over it. (Red markings on the saddle in all photos. Rotates around the horse's saddle and flanks.)

Thanks!

It was the only one of the set that had this writing, so I was curious. A sticker on one said: "Made in China."
