Discussion Frustrated by the lack of parental controls... considering cancelling. Are there other options?

Overall, I'm happy with Disney Plus as a service, but I am strongly considering cancelling the service because they recently added a slew of terrible Youtube content to Hulu that is rated PG, but has a ton of inappropriate content in it.

If I lower my child's content profile to G, instead of PG, almost the entire age-appropriate library of Disney titles disappears. You can't block Hulu content, nor can you block individual titles, so I am stuck with what now becomes a useless service for me. Why has there been no progress on improving parental controls despite the countless complaints I see about it online?

Yeah, don’t let your kid watch without being there. It is a guaranteed to work parental control instead of relying on someone else to be the parent.

Can I get some examples here?

"Toppers Guild" but there are quite a few of these brain rot YouTube format shows with content that isn't child-friendly yet is rated PG. They also constantly get recommended on profiles that are limited to PG Content with no way to block them either from recommendations or completely.

Do you have a proposal for how they could fix this? What a parent considers appropriate is such a subjective topic, how is Disney supposed to know what you specifically consider appropriate for your child?

3 options:

  • Allow parents to turn on/off Hulu content from kids profiles (or any profile really)
  • Allow parents to block indivual shows. (This is what nearly every other streaming service does.)
  • Or the reverse. Allow parents to set a lower content rating threshold, but manually override to allow titles with a higher rating. For example with a profile set to G, a parent could go in and authorize all PG-rated titles they deem appropriate. (This is how Apple handles parental control on the App store.)

Companies like Disney pay a lot of lip service to the idea of giving parents control, but it's almost impossible to govern that much content, especially when it comes from different eras when ratings meant different things (a movie that was rated PG in 1980 is very different from a movie that's rated PG now, for example). I don't think there's any easy way around having to monitor the content yourself.

Every other streaming platform allows parents to block individual titles.

The big problems really began with the hulu merger. The Disney content is mostly fine, but the Hulu content is not. Unforunately, they shoehorned the Hulu content into the Disney app and don't allow you to turn it off on kids profiles.
