Since you're buying the office, there's a step before picking a processor: the seller's merchant account is in their name and tax ID, so it won't carry over anyway, and what matters is what it leaves behind. Ask the seller for the processor agreement and any terminal lease, because terminals are often on separate leases that can't be cancelled and quietly become your problem if the hardware stays in the office. The bigger one is patients on payment plans or with cards on file. Those cards sit in the current processor's vault, so ask whether they will transfer them to your new processor and get it in writing before closing, or every one of those patients has to give you a card again. When you compare offers, give each the seller's actual monthly statements and ask for the effective rate, not the headline percentage.
