We have things to be excited about
galleryObviously, 2-2-1 is not exactly where we would hope to be at the start of the season. But I just wanna point out that our defense is probably the best in the league. The stars currently have the lowest true goals against average. and the lowest shots against per game average in the entire NHL. We are elite lockdown defensively. If we can get the offense, I know we can get going and become one of the most dangerous teams in the league. We also have the tools to do that. I know we can do it, go stars!

How realistic is the Norris for Miro?
sticklanguage.substack.comTLDR: Even a career year might not be enough for Miro to satisfy the offensive-minded voters, and his numbers are clocking in well below the last 8 winners across a number of categories.
---
Alain Nasreddine has coached NHL defensemen for a long time, and he says he has a unique “problem” when it comes to Miro.
“Usually, it’s the other way around,” he told The Dallas Morning News last week. “You have to tell the offensive D to slow down and relax and focus on D. With Miro, I’ve never lived this before where you actually have to push him to bring more offense.”
The Stars are confident they have the best defensive defenseman, period. Gulutzan and Nasreddine both said so “emphatically,” according to the same Dallas Morning News piece. But the Norris voters have never put him in their top three. Nasreddine summed up the frustration:
“When we look at the Norris, it’s always looking at points. I just find it so unfair.”
He may be right that it’s unfair, but unfortunately the numbers clearly say it’s true either way.
Full breakdown of the stats here.

Jake Oettinger Currently Rates as the #1 Overall Goaltender in the NHL as of 10/10.
Not accounting for outlier stats like relief goalies, goalies who have only one game under their belt, etc… Among starting goaltenders and true backups who have seen significant ice time (relative to how fresh the season is), Jake Oettinger currently sits atop the statboards in everything but wins and HDSV%, which are hard to get when your skaters forget how to score goals and Bichsel‘s twig commits treason.
Wins: 2 (tied- 11th)
GAA: 0.74 (leads NHL)
SV%: .963 (leads NHL)
Shutouts: 2 (leads NHL)
HDSV%: .941(8th, only goalie below a perfect 1.000 in the top 8)
If Otter can finally make that step up like he wants to and continue on this pace, our vicious little semi-aquatic mammal is gonna earn himself a Vezina.

DAL@PIT Pregame: Jason Robertson | Dallas Stars
nhl.comThought this was a more interesting interview, Robertson talks about his brother a bit.
Heika continues his streak of annoying stars players looking for stories.

Watch locations in Plano
Looking for consistent places to watch Stars games in the Plano area. Not looking for "watch parties" per se, but not always opposed either. Just wanted to know if anyone has a good go-to restaurant or bar/sports bar place. I wanted to check out Austin Avenue, but i was worried that both the Thursday game and tonight's game would be overshadowed by the Cowgirls and Red River Showdown respectively. Any suggestions or locations are greatly appreciated.

Our First Road Game!
galleryMe and my fiancée changed our flight plans to Buffalo to go watch the game and this our first away game and so glad it was a W! Even better besides a win is that we a made a poster for Wyjo since it’s her favorite player and he delivered! We had to wear our 99s and my Stanley Cup hat to rub it in 🤣 and got a lot of chirps from Buffalo fans but it was so much fun!

Game 4: Player rankings and performance charts for each skater
sticklanguagestats.comSome tweaks to scoring formula, for anybody who's checked out this site before...
Before these latest tweaks, a "typical" game was supposed to come out to about a score of 50. I thought that was confusing/not very intuitive, so I made it more like a school style grading system. 100 = perfect, 90s = "A" caliber game, 80s = "B" caliber, 70s = "C" caliber, with a 70 now representative of a "typical" game. Below 70 is a below average performance.
A "typical" performance is also being determined in large part by the stats in the other Stars games this season, as opposed to a "hard"/static definition of what typical means. So, these player scores are going to fluctuate more from game to game early in the season, until the profile of a "typical game" is defined by the average of a larger sample size of previous games. For example, after the crappy Game 1 shutout, ANY kind of offensive output would have scored out as "above typical," so a player in Game 2 might have been scored higher for a solid offensive performance than they would for that same performance in Game 60.
I imagine after 10 games or so a lot of that gets smoothed out, as it's already starting to get much smoother now. Also, when data comes in for a new game, the previous game scores are adjusted as needed too, so that smoothing is applied backwards. Again, any of those backwards-looking adjustments to scores will get smaller and smaller as more games go into the season data set.

Having trouble watching games on Prime with VPN
Last season I was able to set my VPN to Dallas and watch games on Victory+. I have Prime Video but haven’t been able to use the same workaround. Anyone have a solution to this? I don’t want to have to pay for yet another streaming service to have reliable access to games. Thanks y’all!
Edit: I know about alternate less than legal streaming methods. Please don’t post about them here, as it’s against the sub’s and Reddit’s rules
Solution 1: the most obvious solution, get ESPN+. Bonus points because you can choose the broadcast.
Solution 2: some have had success using the browser version of Prime Video with a VPN
