DISCUSSION This movie did not deserve to flop

Post image

I hadn't watched this movie until recently and despite hearing bad reviews and it flopping considerably at the box office, I feel Supergirl had great storytelling and mostly swayed from a regular cliche "girl hero" trope. Personally it was really good and deserved wayy better as compared to the Superman movie. Also awesome actress Milly Alcock and stunning too idc.

Apparently the fans of this film who are saying it didn’t deserve to flop are the ones who didn’t pay to see it during its theatrical run.

u/Rubicon2-0 Aug 31 '26

Very damn accurate! Most of the post "i doesn't deserve the flop" always are followed by "I just watched Supergirl" lol

Because they aren’t

Dc fans LOOOOVE to defend projects on Twitter and Reddit but refuse to actual go out and see them lmao

13

u/Excuse_Unfair Aug 31 '26

I personally think they introduced Supergirl wayyyyy to early.

Im also not a fan of this storyline.

I honestly rather her story be a show at first. Her getting us to earth customs finding her place here. Then her having a bigger role in the movie's.

u/fabulousfantabulist Aug 31 '26

Supergirl being their second entry in the saga is crazy business, and I really enjoyed the movie.

Exactly.

The movie flopped and made no money. A month after it was available on streaming, people start saying it’s good.

Pretty obvious no one thought it was good enough to spend money on.

I paid to see it.

I almost got a whole theater to myself. Good time.

If you would have bought all the other seats too it would have made more money!

Yes I waited for to be on subscription but others should have paid to see it!

13

u/Dismal-Vanilla1878 Aug 31 '26

Wait....its ALREADY on streaming?

Checking.....Holy Crap! It is! That's one of the fastest turn around times for a movie I've seen lately.

10

u/Conyan51 Aug 31 '26

Eh DC has been basically doing that since Birds of Prey. BoP hit streaming less than 2 months after theatrical release (granted Covid). The Flash came out on streaming a week after leaving theaters. While Black Adam and Aquaman 2 hit streaming during their last weeks in theaters. If anything I’m surprised it took them this long to get Supergirl there.

6

u/OrangeStar222 Aug 31 '26

Are you seriously surprised? This is the streaming era, 30 day theater run and the movie is on one of the streaming platforms. That's how every movie is run, sometimes they don't even wait until a movie is out of theaters to put them on streaming. I remember watching Michael in theaters for a thrid time a week or so after it had already launched on Amazon Prime.

19

For real. If I could do it all over again, Supergirl would have flopped even harder because I wouldn't have gone to see it in theaters.

Didn't care for the comic story (the True Grit narration just got annoying before the second issue), and not a fan of what they did in the movie in regards to the main story. It was ... ok, but they ruined the themes by trying to up the threat. Lobo added nothing which meant he took away from the movie. What I really liked was the back story.

Movie did NOT deserve the hate it got, but it was not a great movie.

3

u/Aitrus233 Aug 31 '26

I saw it twice in theaters.

8

u/TreatEven1837 Aug 31 '26

This. It's almost as if films need people to go out and spend money to be successful.
Ultimately, we're on a road for streaming release at theatre prices and cutting out the old school theatre.

10

u/Savings-Meeting5558 Aug 31 '26

Flat out not true 🤣. Maybe just make a good movie that gets good word of mouth. This year has been immaculate for box office. Blockbuster or not.

12

u/r_aiden Aug 31 '26

Not even remotely true. We've seen that people are still willing to go to movie theaters. Just look at Obsession, Backrooms, and Spider-Man. One is completely original, one is based on a concept that has existed for less than a decade, and one is from an existing popular IP.

I agree that current ticket prices are outrageous but movie theaters are not going anywhere unless we have another pandemic

u/jj5782 Aug 31 '26

This is the definition of a generic superhero movie. The emotional beats didn’t hit. The action was okay. The story was okay. Very meh supporting cast. It didn’t do anything well.

17

u/VioletCroft27 Aug 31 '26

I saw it opening day and even walking out of it I was just like meh. Kara was great for the most part but no one else was. Superman had Lois, Jimmy, Guy, Mr Terrific, Hawkgirl, Metamotpho, Mr and Mrs Kent and the rest of the daily planet plus Eve as supporting cast and all of them were memoriable in one way or another. Plus Lex was a great villain. Supergirl had Ruthye and Lobo? And that’s it. And then the villain was somehow more generic and uninteresting that the one from the Marvels😭

7

u/Super_Tax_Nerd Aug 31 '26

I dont even remember who the villain in The Marvel's was.

u/SentinelATL Aug 31 '26

It was ok. Not terrible not great but ok. All the beats were predictable. Villain was forgettable and I just watched it for first time four hours ago.

54

u/WackHeisenBauer Aug 31 '26

That’s the problem. It was just alright. Just plain generic.

32

u/Alconium Aug 31 '26

Which is kinda criminal considering the source material.

17

u/Ok_Diver2347 Aug 31 '26

I think the source material gets too much praise to be honest. There’s other Supergirl stories. I think people just love the art.

10

u/sk8rboi36 Aug 31 '26

Yeah, it’s just true grit. It’s good but I don’t get the hype either. It’s usually based around Kara like discovering herself and healing from her drunkenness, except she’s drunk for like one page of the book and Kyrpton is only mentioned for a few pages as well. Kara is a pretty static (and recognizable, heroic) character as she should be because the real arc in the story is how Kara’s example illuminates Ruthye

6

u/Any-Cranberry-6305 Aug 31 '26

And lets be real, that art for that book is evocative, emotional and colorful. Hard to pull off and the reason people love the book.

The story, even in the book, was good but not incredible.

3

u/Ok_Diver2347 Aug 31 '26

Haha this one is true

4

u/SheedRanko Aug 31 '26

The source material that only sold 20k copies that only hardcore DC fans read?

Sorry, but even if the source material was written by William Shakespeare himself, it wouldn't saved this flop.

9

u/Large-Explorer-6876 Aug 31 '26

In the comic the villain was not really the main focus of the story rather Kara and Ruthye's bond and companionship. The movie tried to make the villain face of the story which felt way too forced.

12

u/Ok-Toe-6969 Aug 31 '26

In my opinion it did deserve to flop, because the writing was bad, everything felt very bland, environment felt like just a massive green screen, it was better than morbius and that other spider girls movie, but overall it wasn't great man

6

u/fatandfly Aug 31 '26

Maybe it's technically better than Morbius but I'd rather watch that again than this, the same with Madame Web. They are in the so bad it's good category, you can laugh at how bad the movies are. Supergirl was just a blah

7

u/Dry-Indication7928 Aug 31 '26

Obviously it couldn't adapt all of the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, especially the ending (it takes place I belive decades if not centuries after the main events of the book), but I do think there is some stuff that would have made this movie so much better, the biggest being shifting the focus away from the villain to the realtionship between Supergirl and Ruthye

7

u/JABUK97 Aug 31 '26

Completely agree with this. I really wish it had been more colourful and vibrant as well. If it had looked more like Project Hail Mary, with that kind of visual style and sense of scale, I think it would have made a huge difference.

9

u/BoxSea4289 Aug 31 '26

Plus…Supergirl isn’t even the protagonist of the movie, the other girl has a much more emotional arc and is the heart of the movie.

Also the supergirl actress looks too young, which is made even worse by the fact that they have her acting alongside an actual 8 year old which makes her look even younger.

19

u/InternalRude6724 Aug 31 '26

Yeah I’d put it on the same tier as the Blue Beetle movie.

19

u/Penguino6_9 Aug 31 '26

I’d say blue beetle was better imo but can’t wait to see more of both of them in the dcu

5

u/YourJokeMisinterpret Aug 31 '26

Blue Beetle at least was entertaining and funny when it wanted to be. If Blue Beetle is a B, this movie is a C.

11

u/MUSAFIR_- Aug 31 '26

Pretty much but blue beetle had decent cast, visuals, action and music, makes for better watch even if it's generic story

5

u/OrangeStar222 Aug 31 '26

I see Blue Beetle as a love letter to early to mid-00s superhero movies. Watching it just reminds me of Spider-Man, Daredevil, Ghostrider, X-Men etc. Absolutely adore that film and I'm glad he was adopted bu the DCU.

u/PrudentRatio58317 Aug 31 '26

They took True Grit but removed most of the wit, personality, and precociousness from the main character.

They took some of the most visually evocative art ever and turned it drab.

And they took a character that inspired the following and made her a slob retooled for humor that never lands:

You see, what is not well understood about the daughter) of Krypton is that her power was not one of action but one of restraint, endurance, and passion. She did not choose to fire a beam from her eyes, or have breath of ice, or run faster than a speeding bullet. Or any of her other well-documented miracles. No, she held back her heat vision to look you in the face. She warmed her breath to converse with you. She slowed herself to walk by your side. Every moment of every day, she suppressed the forces churning inside of her. All the energy of a dead world that strained against her many barriers, eternally demanding to be released. I believe this effort hurt her. I believe she lived her life in pain.

Stories where the main character is passive is hard to get behind.

36

u/Broodles12 Aug 31 '26

Yeah, the story it is mostly adapted from is a story told entirely from the point of view of Ruthye. Still a very good read imo but kind of hard to translate into being a Kara focused story.

16

u/dark_net_daddy Aug 31 '26 edited Aug 31 '26

Especially when the script introduces a bizarre child sex trafficking ring subplot that doesn’t really evolve beyond a little thing she’ll try to make time for

→ More replies (9)

204

u/D0nell Aug 31 '26

It absolutely did.

It was a terrible adaptation of the comic book. It was inspired by.

The kryptonite sun has no explanation like it does in the comic book.

The fight choreography was very bland and I won’t get over the bar scene where they basically just pan the camera away from the fight scene.

The needle drop was terrible and honestly unnecessary.

They promoted lobo way too much for what he actually contributed.

The dialogue at the end Superman scene just felt flat.

“ I think I’m gonna stay on earth“

“ I think that’s a good idea”

“ the dog is in the chocolate”

I don’t know I just don’t feel like there’s chemistry between Kara and Clark it’s just so awkward when they interact. I understand they are estranged, but it doesn’t even feel like they could grow into becoming family.

25

u/npri0r Aug 31 '26

The Clark and Kara chemistry felt pretty accurate for their relationship. Clark is well meaning, but he really doesn’t know her too well and is trying really hard to make her feel like she has family. And Kara had put in zero effort into getting to know him.

3

u/Illidanisdead Sep 01 '26

you hit the head on the nail about several points however one you might have missed is the ending, the comic made an effort to show the emotional journey that Kara took and how she changed for the better, choosing not to kill the main villain instead banishing him. it was the whole point of the story something lost in the movie, where he killed the villain and was like eh, it's hard to really relate to kara at all in the movie, each emotional moment was fast forwarded. Lobo felt like he was there to promote himself and also to make kara sound 'cool' oh look she killed the evil guy very cool -_- I don't think the person who wrote the supergirl movie understood the point of the comic at all.

3

u/D0nell Sep 01 '26

Yes 👏🏾

15

u/jxonair Aug 31 '26

The idea didn’t. But the film itself? Absolutely. It was a muddled mess of closed sets and crappy writing and pacing. I went in wanting to see this prove people wrong. It fell flat.

I would have been 6/10 if I hadn’t read the comic. The comic was so much better it lowers my enjoyment of the movie by a point. The age of generic super hero movie clearing $500M is over.

I feel like this supergirl movie also closed the door on a lot of iconic Supergirl stories. They probably should have built up to a Woman of Tomorrow movie instead of making a watered down version.

7

u/elinamebro Aug 31 '26

What made it fall short in your opinion?

10

u/jacobT1234 Aug 31 '26

The villain may be one of the worst comic book villains of all time. The character and acting of the girl (don't remember her name or anything about her) were both horrendous. The dialogue wasn't great. Lobo felt like he was forced into the movie. The plot was boring and generic. The only redeeming feature is that I really like milly as supergirl and that's about it.

Movies don't get to "'deserve" box office sales

box office is purely based on how the movie fares as a product and if audiences don't buy it, then it is a failure as a product

Like even if it was a 10/10 movie, if it doesn't get people to buy tickets, it is not a good product even if it is good art

8

u/Titanman401 Aug 31 '26

Sometimes people are fickle. The art can be a great one and people for sone reason don’t feel like seeing/just ignore a product for no reason. It didn’t help that this movie was bad, but that doesn’t make it an inferior thing in and of itself.

28

u/macnutt25 Aug 31 '26

And yet it did

17

u/ThtsTheWaySheGoes Aug 31 '26

So you didnt see it in theaters? Cuz thats why it flopped. No one wanted to see it.

41

u/PeterParker72 Aug 31 '26

It didn’t deserve to flop, but it also wasn’t a great movie either. It was pretty mid.

34

u/MyLifeForAnEType Aug 31 '26

I don't even understand what posts like this are attempting to get across.

If it "didn't deserve" to flop, then it would have attracted more viewers.

Are theatres running 75% off tickets to mitigate this next time?  At the expense of the studio.  With associated ads asking people to go see it because they super promise it's not bad?

18

u/Childish_Cambino2187 Aug 31 '26

Not to mention, they didn’t see it until recently on digital, so they were part of the reason the movie flopped because they didn’t see it in theaters. If you don’t know why it flopped, why didn’t you help contribute to at the theaters?

→ More replies (2)

5

u/Warded_Works Aug 31 '26

Then it did deserve to flop? Can’t say it was mid and didn’t deserve it. It wasn’t good but it didn’t deserve to flop makes no sense. Good movies flop all the time, but a mid movie deserved to not flop? Make it make sense.

3

u/Dat1AsianGuy Aug 31 '26

felt like the movie was set for failure given with the marketing and people like the director and writers working against the film with what was said after the film's reception. Most fan didn't want/expect a supergirl film this early but it could've worked.

9

u/MenacingBackground Aug 31 '26

They also made supergirl way more unappealing compared to her cameo in superman

4

u/Mariessa- Aug 31 '26

Oo, interesting. I felt the opposite. I thought her Superman cameo was offputting. I thought this movie handled her mess and pain/anger well.

12

u/iLLiCiT_XL Aug 31 '26

I literally just finished watching it 2 min ago. It was okay at best. Honestly, the director, script, cinematography, and soundtrack underserved the cast. Milly was good, Mamoa was good. Krem was whack. Way too many needle drops. And the movie looked way too drab.

I don’t know if they really did anything with Kara. The pay off of her going home feels anti-climatic.

7

u/orange_sox Aug 31 '26

I absolutely did deserve to flop. They picked a great Supergirl story, with stunning art and turned it into a bland story with a muted color pallet.

Honestly I’m just mad at how bland they made the visuals.

7

u/ProfessionalITPerson Aug 31 '26 edited Aug 31 '26

I am not a fan, I saw it in the theater and I have to honestly say, this movie was not good. It's badly written, and was poorly executed. No hate for Millie, she did was she was able to do, with the material she was given.

7

u/xaklx20 Aug 31 '26

nah no way, the movie wasn't super bad but was super disappointing, superman was WAAAAAY better in everything, way better side characters, way better protagonist, WAAAAY better villain. In supergirl the villain was like "haha I'm bad" that's it, the orphan girl was annoying, supergirl (I don't even remember her name anymore and I watched the movie twice LMAO) let ppl die because she didn't want the orphan girl to become a killer, and this was super weird, all the time about the no killing bullshit supergirl was talking like she understood for experience which as far as we know it is not the case and her backstory has nothing to do with this topic

12

u/CalvinImahara Aug 31 '26

Unfortunately the reviews were right. The problem is that the screenwriter was too inexperienced. Making this their first movie was a mistake.

5

u/JmBento Aug 31 '26

So, it didn't deserve to flop... because you liked it? Even the worst films ever made have at least a few people who like it. It doesn't mean anything.

5

u/HistoricalBicycle544 Aug 31 '26

I watched it opening day, and was disappointed. She was great as Supergirl but the story was a mess, got bored during the big fight scenes and couldn't take Jason Mamoa seriously as Lobo, I just thought, "huh, that's Jason Mamoa in a bad costume with fake abs". I found my favourite bits to be the flashbacks from Krypton/Argo city. Could genuinely have watched a whole film just based on that and her arrival to earth.

Are you, as a Regular people, personally comfortable saying to James Gunn, "Supergirl movie could've saved his new DCU, but on principle we did not want it to release too soon

Didnt deserve to flop so bad , but deserved to flop

4

u/ConcentrateMaterial6 Aug 31 '26

Great story telling. 🤷 Man, script was so generic and cliche. No vision from director at all. Supergirl was a mid movie. Nothing else to add. Only positive is Milly Alcock

3

u/Nas_Durden Aug 31 '26

It wasn’t good, but it also wasn’t terrible. I actually was enjoying the first half of it, but then it fell off a cliff in the second half for me.

u/uhhhlemmethink Aug 31 '26

idk I felt like it was on the same tier as The Flash movie. Only highlight were David Corenswet's Superman

3

u/Abraham_Issus Aug 31 '26

Flash was way better I think. The only thing that tanked it was CGI.

5

u/Toe_Butter Aug 31 '26

Part of why I didn’t like this movie was because I thought it DID lean into the “girl hero” cliche too much. I’m genuinely curious about what made people who liked this movie think of it as the opposite, if anyone’s willing to explain

4

u/chanduchillar_ Aug 31 '26

It did though. The acting by all of the actors involved was really good and the film had a pretty intriguing opening. But other than that everything else was so bland, boring and cliche. Like why did the director think that this guy was the best choice for the villan of this film?

3

u/manit14 Aug 31 '26

Mmmm nooooo it was pretty bad. I really wanted it to be good. But it was not.

6

u/JmBento Aug 31 '26

It absolutely did deserve to flop. It didn't deserve to flop as hard as it did (nearly entirely because Alcock gives a great performance with the little she's given), but it definitely didn't deserve to make back its $170 budget.

3

u/This_Song_984 Aug 31 '26

I disagree, I've watched it twice and it was bad both times, and that was me really trying to like it.

3

u/Positive_Chip6198 Aug 31 '26

Counterpoint, it did deserve to flop.

4

u/69alivebkd Aug 31 '26

It TOTALLY deserved to flop. It had so much potential and failed on so many levels. And, I love the director. Maybe big budget superhero movies aren't his thing.

4

u/Monirul-Haque Sep 01 '26

You have pretty bad taste in movies.

10

u/Big__Gub Aug 31 '26

It did. It wasn’t good, sorry.

9

u/Smaragd44 Aug 31 '26

It's been a few months. Just shut up and actually show up to theatres next time

9

u/ThickBoxx Aug 31 '26

Hey OP, why are you just seeing this and not when it was released in theaters? Maybe that’ll answer your question on why it flopped

12

u/sukeshpabolu Aug 31 '26

Yes. It deserved to be. The director apparantly didn't read the source material.
They used AI to cheaply design certain things and characters in the movie.

6

u/Misterr_Joji Aug 31 '26

A lame villain didn’t help. Krem was a totally forgettable character. Milly was great though. Definitely can’t wait to see more of her in the expanded DCU.

8

u/Dr_SlapsMD Aug 31 '26

Bugging. This shit was ass trash in every way possible.

10

u/vuec97 Aug 31 '26

It got what it deserved

3

u/hazmat_beast Aug 31 '26

I watched it and yeah its not as terrible as some people said

3

u/Individual_Dream_213 Aug 31 '26

If hot takes were illegal.

3

u/Southern-Coffee4018 Aug 31 '26 edited Aug 31 '26

maybe the movie wouldn't have flopped if Supergirl had been the main character instead of Ruthye

Love all the people who didn’t care enough to see this movie in theaters saying it didn’t deserve to flop. If that were true, the “didn’t deserve it” crowd would have actually gone.

3

u/Various-Salt488 Aug 31 '26

Sorry, it was objectively horrible. I was excited… convinced my wife and kids to come…

All of us walked out “WTF is this???”

Drab cinematography, art, set and costume design. Shit music. Millie’s portrayal of Kara as some drunken wannabe sorority girl… terrible.

I honestly haven’t disliked a movie as much as this in a long time. Just totally phoned in. Like there wasn’t a single thing I liked about this piece of shit.

3

u/TheForestSaphire Aug 31 '26

Na this movie was mid

Dident deserve to flop but it wasnt good

3

u/PHBOSS444 Aug 31 '26

yes it did, studios should learn not to make subpar superhero movies, it's not 2016 anymore

3

u/Doomed-Doomer Sep 01 '26

Maybe it'll have a second life streaming, like Masters of the Universe.

I enjoyed it to be honest, it was not a typical sci-fi/superhero movie.

I just did not understand what Aquaman was doing out of the water.

3

u/Sho_Nuff-1 Sep 01 '26

I dunno, it was pretty bad

3

u/maxxhaxx72 Sep 01 '26

Yes it did

Absolute dreck

7

u/RedCape05 Aug 31 '26

Yes it did It was poorly made, it came off as if no one involved in the making of this film even read the source material. It lacked the visual identity which made Woman of Tomorrow unique and beautiful, even the utter lack of care with the CGI in some scenes was disheartening to see. It deserved to flop because no one working on it worked hard enough to ensure that it didn't

3

u/Bad-Genie Aug 31 '26

I read the comics really looking forward to the movie. Even reading it I thought "man this will be a great scene in the movie".

Only for that scene to never come. They really ignored the best parts of the comic.

3

u/Discremio Aug 31 '26

If you enjoyed it, great. But a lot of people didn't......

A reported production budget of $170 million to $186 million

Worldwide Gross: $125.9 million

Did it deserve to be a flop? Who knows. But the people who made it certainly deserve to be out of a job.

6

u/RobertDowneyPoonyer Aug 31 '26

It didn't deserve to be made. There was absolutely no demand for it.

5

u/Professional-Rip-519 Aug 31 '26

And even then it wasn't very good.

4

u/aRorschachTest Aug 31 '26

I was alright. It certainly wasn’t bad by any means, but it wasn’t particularly good either.

Did it deserve to fail? No. I think it deserved to at least break even.

5

u/JStarZ Aug 31 '26

It was so bad though.

2

u/secretreddname Aug 31 '26

Maybe you should have watched it when it was released to help it out.

5

u/Drywall_Break21 Aug 31 '26

I genuinely looked forward to this movie as a comic book fan, and it proved me wrong; it was a tremendous disappointment. It seems like it was rushed.

2

u/Lonely_Struggle_7472 Aug 31 '26

It absolutely fucking did

6

u/Ophelia_Yummy Aug 31 '26

Movie is god awful… it is not only a bad adaptation.. it is an extremely bad script period.

6

u/SpMarfy Aug 31 '26

I saw it and I promise it was ass

2

u/happilyretired1 Aug 31 '26

It sure did.

2

u/Procyon242 Aug 31 '26

Yes it did.

2

u/Hefty_Ad_3965 Aug 31 '26

Its not a terrible movie. It's still a record breaking flop. "Deserving" means nothing in the Grand scheme of reality.

2

u/Childish_Cambino2187 Aug 31 '26

Yes it did, you’re better off watching True Grit and just imagining Jeff Bridges character as Supergirl and Hailee Steinfield as Rutheye

2

u/uCry__iLoL Aug 31 '26

Everybody’s entitled to their opinion.

2

u/sub30_24flick Aug 31 '26

Guys it happens we don’t need to talk about it , every week and if you cared this much why didn’t you go the first week lmaooo people go to movies they care about

2

u/Life_Bee_5637 Aug 31 '26

It absolutely deserved.
The reluctant hero who’s jaded and won’t help trope have been done to death.
But usually they’re old established hero with complex or understandable back story and last climax to root for in those movies. Like Logan.

This movie had none of that backstory or turning point or big climax where the hero is redeemed. Supergirl just comes off as annoying brat who won’t use her power for good bc she’s moody for no reason other than woe is me. Then she goes out of the way to protect Ruthye from killing but she kills him anyway bc somehow she transcended above all that.

2

u/Correct_Milk_828 Aug 31 '26

I wouldn’t have minded the movie, but it just felt like a stretch that a girl with basically no skill was out for revenge against a gang of bad guys.

Sure, she took one guy out along the way, but other than that she was basically helpless. It would’ve been better if they at least made her capable so Supergirl would’ve shared more parallels with her and had a more challenging time influencing her to do the right thing. I think that would’ve led to a more impactful conclusion for both of them.

Also Jason Mamoa as Lobo wasn’t needed in this movie. It felt like it was done for hype and not much else.

2

u/vbt31 Aug 31 '26

It also deserved better writing and creative decisions.

2

u/GoldMcduck Aug 31 '26

I had no interest outside of lobo/ aquaman

2

u/HighTil3005 Aug 31 '26

Who decides what deserve/doesn’t deserve to flop? The people who watch, you can love this movie and at the same time acknowledge that it was enough to get butts in seats

2

u/Kindly_Goal6440 Aug 31 '26

I felt sort of the same about it while watching it, some parts were fun, and I really didn't vibe that well with the normal Critical Drinker fan type guys on youtube going off on Milly about not being pretty enough(?) for the role? She was charming and fun in the movie. My only actual gripe is that she doesn't quite look like has the same genes at Corenswet lol.

In reflection though, there were parts which just.. dragged on, and DCU really suffers from everything being so, so dark. The music also just sucks.. how are we in 2026 and still doing the slowed down, indiefied rock songs trend? It briefly, barely worked, now it's just very cringe.

The space bus part for me just dragged on and on and on, Lobo is never explained at all but saves the day, and Ruthye was.. just poorly directed, I think? I don't know, she wasn't likeable and just came across as painfully naive/stupid in every situation.

It's not a god awful movie, but I'm not surprised it didn't blow up the box office when it feels like a really sloppily made movie with not that much vision and what feels like a lack of understanding about how to make movies work.

2

u/WiFiConnected_ Aug 31 '26

I saw it. It was terrible.

Milly was great. Jason was unnecessary. The film wasn’t within 1/1000th of the WOT story. Had they used any of the story and Gillespie had even read one page of the actual storyline, not the 🚮 Ana created from literally nothing, he’d have demanded to be removed from the film. Or for a betrer scriptwriter.

Milly deserved better but this film? Yes, it deserved to flop.

2

u/Turtle_Hermit_3 Aug 31 '26

When going to the movies cost as much as it does…some movies ain’t worth the silver screen. Sad to say but this movie 10 years ago would have done $400-500mil and been a moderate success.

2

u/thanghil Aug 31 '26

Explain why the bad guy had a poison dart weapon that kills exactly only 2 people (+ a dog) in the entire galaxy and he happens to know that he is fighting one of them while NOT considered that the planet he is on gives his opponent world breaking strength 50% of the time.

2

u/sammo21 Aug 31 '26

I watched it this past week. I am sorry but its a pretty subpar film. I am curious if the script was as "perfect" as James Gunn implied because I am shocked they saw this movie and were excited to release it.

My sister and bil recently caught COVID again. I have severe immune issues. I can't go back to movies yet.

No, it absolutely did not

Didn’t realize it had come out already. Will check it out.
