That's a great watch, very well put together. It would be great to see this shared outside our echo chamber, it does a great job of explaining the benefits of legalisation.

Very well put together video. Hit the issues on the head. And with all the recommendations to legalise our government does nothing.
Instead of spending €7 million a year on legal charges they could be raking in millions in taxation. With money to help the few negative cases.

Guys go look at this thread on reddit Ireland. You have never seen such a large crowd of staunch prohibitionists spouting nonsense.
Id give anything to have a legal framework in place or to allow us to just grow our own, but a quick look at reddit Irelands thread will show you the majority of the country hates it and hates us.

Do not underestimate the conservatism of middle Ireland. The mass going , Gaa playing, Kodaline concert attending , goggle box watchers do not want Cannabis in any way shape or form so it's never ever gonna happen. You might as well try and explain to them that your trying to legalize heroine milkshake shops.

If they ever decide to relax prohibition laws I’d like to actually see some time given to how we’d actually implement it and see what works and what doesn’t. We don’t seem to do that for a lot of things here so I’m well aware my heads in the clouds on that one. That being said, if Meehole and Simple Simon aren’t gonna be the ones to change the law it’s one less thing they can fuck up

Side note, I know reddit doesn't speak for the population but can be a pretty good indicator of sentiment at times

Ireland is a giant producer of pharmaceuticals, might even be one of the biggest in europe. I believe thats a big reason why cannabis is still illegal here. Most people can see that it makes no sense keeping it illegal. But it would massively cut into the profits of the pharma industry. And those companies have a lot of money to sway politics. And not just pharma, alcohol would also take a big hit because a whole lot of people would switch over fully, like if i could smoke as freely as i can have a beer id probly quit drinking altogether. Money rules everything, it was never about safety. You will probly only see legalisation once the big pharma companies have secured their share of the business. Question is can they pull more money from weed than they do from pills. Also a thing rarely mentioned is the fact that people that use psychoactives also tend to start questioning things. Which is a thing the government would rather you dont do.

I've heard this argument before and agree that "big pharma" would be opposed to cannabis legalisation. At the same time Ireland is a tiny market, even compared with most US states. So I don't think that it would make sense to suggest that legalisation here would eat into the profits of pharmaceutical companies. Yes, Ireland is a manufacturing hub but not really a big market.
Cannabis just has an old fashioned stigma here unfortunately. It's unpopular with the core voters for FF/FG and until that changes there will be no political appetite to consider legalisation.
I really don't see a conspiracy with big pharma to be honest. If that were true then I think we'd have seen much more lobbying against it in the US.

Yeah i understand what youre saying. The stigma is a huge part, but again its in some peoples interest to keep that stigma going, also most of the stigma was started by industry tycoons like rockefellers way back in america. Canabis used to be common place in a lot of places around europe . And yeah america legalised it but they were also one of the first to make it illegal in the first place, and then created alot of the stigma around it with things like "reefer madness" and atributed it to criminal migrants. Even the word "marijuana" was pulled straight from someones ass , mexicans call it "mota" there were similar sounding words for it in some languages but that spelling of marijuana is an american invention to make it sound more spanish. Also on a quick search on "big pharma" in the states, the industry lost about 3billion when it was initially legalised, then huge companies invested into it , even companies like phizer now own companies in cannabis derived medicines and now stand to profit in the trillions. Most people dont think for themselves, and when the industry is ready for it to be legal youl see the public opinion change very quickly, because its manipulated to do so. Someone will pay someone off , some bullshit "study" will come out , be posted all over by bots and then suddenly the stigma is gone.

thanks for the reply but your two comments seem to contradict each other.
first you mention that legalisation would massively cut into pharma profits. then you mention that these same companies are poised to reap profits into the trillions due to investment in cannabis derived medicine.
I'm well aware of the racist origins of cannabis prohibition and how the war on drugs was intended to disrupt minority communities and so on.
in fact it's obvious that the guards favor prohibition for much the same reason. they can use the "smell of cannabis" as a pretext for stopping and searching people.
anyway I'm still confused by your earlier claims surrounding "big pharma" and how they lobby our politicians to keep cannabis illegal.
not having a go at you personally but I have yet to hear a coherent argument that is rooted in verifiable fact to support that claim. it kind of drives me nuts tbh.
there's plenty to dislike about "big pharma" but I just don't get the argument about lobbying against cannabis legalisation.
again, not having a dig at you or trying to start an argument. hope you enjoy your evening.

Sorry if i phrased it in a confusing way, what i mean to say is that pharma is standing in the way untill they can set themselves up to profit from it themselves after legalisation.
But obviously im no journalist, scientist or researcher of any kind and you shouldn't just take my word for it on anything without looking into it youreself, its just my opinion, and if someone like me could easily prove a conspiracy in a trillion dollar industry, its probably not much of a conspiracy.
A big push to make it illegal in the first place was the need to sell petrochemical derived medicines over natural remedies, and wood and other material over hemp, aswell as the need for general mass obedience as people like John D Rockefellar wanted workers not thinkers. (again, internet conspiracy theorist, look for yourself)

Aussie here, keep up the good work. Hopefully Ireland is another domino that can fall so the wowsers in this nanny state called Australia can start to see the light that a legal Cannabis market isnt the end of the world

Preachin to the choir here.
I did not know that you cant drink booze within a radius of where you bought it though. Almost like it would look bad having drunks hang around outside the offy.
