General Discussion is this something people would want?
I’ve been playing around with making my own patterns and putting them up on Etsy. I just wanted to get some insight from some other crochet artists on if these are something people would want to make? I know I love them but I’m not sure if I have artist blindness lol!!
I essentially have one pattern for the bikini top and can switch out the design on the top. I have a bunch already but if you guys have ideas I’d love to hear those too!

I would make the straps thicker, these would cut into someone with larger breasts. The designs are cool - but the functionality of the top is questionable.

I think I’m trying to market them for people who like raving or for concerts and stuff like that. I don’t think I’d recommend them for people who want to swim with them

u/AdvancedSquashDirect Aug 02 '25
i get that - but it would look a little more substantial - if you ran a border around the edge including the straps, it would look a bit thicker - and would be easy to do

u/Chemical_Ice5880 Aug 02 '25
Ok thank you so much I’ll definitely add that

You could also include a thick strap and thin strap option in the pattern that way people could choose! That way you could keep the look of the thin strap because it's super cute but have it be more inclusive if they need more support! 😊

Definitely anything bigger than an average cup size might struggle with the straps. My friend has G size cup and the straps of her tops break frequently with lots of movement, so it may be less functional as face wear with a thin strap like that.

As a raver i LOVE these! I have a larger chest though so crochet bralette type things never work for me unfortunately :(
1
u/Chemical_Ice5880 Aug 02 '25
Is there any advice you have for people who want to sell crochet wearables? I want to make sure my patterns are inclusive since I’m a pretty small chested girl myself

u/pcbugy Aug 02 '25
Anything to help add support- someone said thicker straps which is 100% a need (imo). Anything that helps the longevity of the items for dancing, sweating, and an overall 8 hr plus day. Fun and bold patterns that glow in the dark or match 'rave' themes. Seems like you have that part down though! :) Maybe things we can attach trinkets to? (Sprouts/ clips) or hidden pockets for small items (duckies and random charms ppl give out). Crochet flowstars are big in our community right now as well- and bucket hats/ animal ear hats. I think these things would attract the rave community🫶🏼

u/Chemical_Ice5880 Aug 02 '25
This is some great insight!! I’ll work on some more flashy patterns and stuff like that. I love the charms and trinkets idea. Thicker straps seems to be unanimously the biggest issue so I’ll definitely redo the straps.

Speaking from experience, flat triangles as "cups" will only fit a small minority. Anything bigger than what fits in a hand needs an actual, well, cup shape, unless the material is extremely stretchy (which crochet isn't + a stretchy material doesnt offer proper support anyway). Overall I dont think you can truly achieve supportive bralettes in crochet for bigger chests, but even if you're aiming for something that's purely decorative it needs that deeper cup shape or the breasts are just gonna get squished flat and ooze out the sides and center. Theres a lady on Etsy selling bra cup patterns for up to very large cup sizes, it could be a starting point ! (AfterHoursCrochetCA)

As someone with quite large chest who has made crochet bralettes: a flat triangle won't work for my boobs, it needs to have some kind of cup shape this video worked for me: https://youtu.be/jGTsR1NR4aU?si=2l_yc5KWJk1zhDxK
I just needed to add more rows than she does to stop my boobs from spilling out the sides.
Also: I get very bad backaches and headaches from any top that ties in the neck region. For people with bigger boobs a different kind of top would be better, or at least (like she does in the video) a wider strap under the bust would be needed for sufficient support.

The little bralette is really not a style compatible with a large-breasted body type. That's just a reality. We can't all look good in everything.
Perhaps a tube-type top/crop top would feel more secure for some?

u/Teagana999 Aug 07 '25
As a woman with larger breasts, I don't trust little triangle bra cups, period. While you may want to make the strap wider in general, women with large breasts are not a likely market for these.

I can see these doing really well at festivals, especially multi day fests where folks are camping and it’s ultra hot!

u/HookedOnFandom Aug 02 '25
I think the second one is the most impressive and might be able to stand alone as a pattern. For the others I agree they could be bundled.

u/Chemical_Ice5880 Aug 02 '25
Another idea I had was offering a matching skirt for the flower and bow bikini tops and a matching bucket hat or skirt for the flame top? So it’s two patterns in one? Is that a better idea
1
u/HookedOnFandom Aug 02 '25
I think that would help since people would feel like they’re getting more of a full outfit. You could always try listing the tops separately and together with the skirt/bucket hat and see which does better. That also helps add more inventory to your store in case people see one pattern and come back to browse.
I’d also take a photo of the bow one on a different backdrop - I’m not sure if your stitches were looser or if it’s just the dark background coming through, but it looks less solid than the other two tops.
1
u/Chemical_Ice5880 Aug 02 '25
Yeah I think the sand makes the bow top look weird. I’ll retake the picture. I have some pictures up of me wearing the tops but I didn’t include them for privacy reasons. I like the idea that they’re getting a “full outfit” too. I appreciate the advice
1
u/HookedOnFandom Aug 02 '25
I definitely think posting pictures of them being worn will always make something sell better, because people can picture better how it looks and if it would work for them. I’d suggest either blocking out your face or asking a friend who is open to it to model when making a listing on Etsy.
2
u/Chemical_Ice5880 Aug 02 '25
Yeah I’ve taken a bunch of pictures of my wearing it that I’m really happy with and my face is out of them. I also have size options in the pattern of different things you need to do for different sizes (s-L)

Do you know how long it took me to see a bikini top? I thought you were selling some tagged dirty sign.
1
u/Chemical_Ice5880 Aug 02 '25
Lmaoooo I thought it was artsy but maybe the picture is distracting
1
u/Teagana999 Aug 07 '25
Definitely distracting. I was wondering why you were photographing your item outside on this dirty electrical box or whatever.
2
u/forgotmyloginoops Aug 02 '25
These are super cute, I think they would sell well. The only thing is that you might want to make the chords for the straps thicker in case someone has a bigger chest. I'm pretty flat myself but I've had friends commiserate about not being able to wear cute bikini tops without extra support.
2
u/Chemical_Ice5880 Aug 02 '25
This seems to be what the consensus is in the comments so I’m definitely adding thicker straps now
3
u/wonderingnlost Aug 02 '25
Boob's are 3d Those are for flat chests of folks who are on with discomfort
3
u/bee_happs Aug 02 '25
whats with the random locations 🤣 you are one creative soul!! I think they’re great 👍 Do you. The rest will follow
1
u/Chemical_Ice5880 Aug 02 '25
Lol!! Thanks I just wanted something that would catch people’s eye. They’re actually all taken in the same place
1
u/OrangeFish44 Aug 02 '25
These look as though they're absolutely flat. How do they fit on someone who actually has boobs? Would there be gaps at the side?
0
u/Chemical_Ice5880 Aug 02 '25
They stretch out and fit my b/c chest to my liking. The ones shown are a small but in the pattern I have sizing options. I just flattened them out for the picture
1
u/ZandrawithaZ Aug 02 '25
It's super cute but I can remake it just by the picture, might want something more complex
1
u/Chemical_Ice5880 Aug 02 '25
Yeah I was thinking of doing pattern bundles or adding a skirt or hat to go with it?
1
u/ZandrawithaZ Aug 02 '25
Maybe make one with cups too? I always have to watch a tutorial for bra cups and I've never seen one with flowers! If you could figure that out people would love it for sure
2
u/Chemical_Ice5880 Aug 02 '25
Ok I’ll definitely try and rework it then. I have sizing options in the written pattern but it seems like a lot of people with larger chests say that increasing stitches isn’t enough by itself. I’ll definitely go on YouTube and try to find some cup tutorials
0
u/ZandrawithaZ Aug 02 '25
Oh yea they will only fit a really small chest, so it won't work for most people with breasts
3
u/brainnnnnnnnn Aug 02 '25
I wouldn't want it if I knew it has been on a dirty ass bus stop sign or the floor. Su unhygienic! And I wash my bought garments before I wear them but I would still not order these because I just think it's disgusting.
1
u/Chemical_Ice5880 Aug 02 '25
lol! I’m not selling the clothes just the patterns. These are my personal ones
1
u/brainnnnnnnnn Aug 02 '25
Ah, I just read that, in this case my comment is pretty irrelevant.
1
u/Chemical_Ice5880 Aug 02 '25
I appreciate you looking out for my customers though 😂 I thought it was funny
2
u/brainnnnnnnnn Aug 02 '25
My comment sounds more negative than it is, I don't wanna spread hate. I like my fellow crocheters 😊

the patterns on the bikinis are cute but the overall vibe looks unfinished.
1
u/Chemical_Ice5880 Aug 02 '25
The bow bikini was definitely still in the works but what could o do to make them look more finished? I heard a lot of people say making the straps thicker would be good but other than that?
2
u/Wrong-Permit Aug 03 '25 edited Aug 03 '25
I love your patterns! I think the designs are really cool :) I think a thicker edge could help, maybe another row of single crochet around the top edges of the cups, and maybe a few rows of something along the bottom. I think it would help with it not getting lost in the underboob section for the bigger chested girlies and give it a little more support I think they could also use a little space/length between the cups, I can see myself potentially spilling out the sides. This could be custom though! I really like how secure the bow design looks in the middle of the cups, the first two look a little loose where the cups come together. Keep going!! These really have potential

I’d also add you’ve got to weave in your ends. A chain isn’t strong enough for the strap, slip stitching down it or subbing for an i-cord or braided cord would be better. It also doesn’t look like there’s any/many increases or bust shaping like a typical triangle bra would have. It’s fine if it’s for people with a small enough bust who don’t need shaping but it does reduce your market. There are lots of free patterns for bikini tops available, so you’d mostly be selling the tapestry grids, or aiming at beginners who don’t feel comfortable free handing. I initially thought you were selling the FOs and I do think you might have more luck with that as they’re cute and impressive to a non-crocheter, but that would be a totally different business model.
1
u/Chemical_Ice5880 Aug 03 '25
Ah yeah I think a braid might be a much better option. I think I’m going to work on adding some stuff underneath the bust. What does FO stand for?
1
u/CataleyaLuna Aug 04 '25
Sorry, finished object — I originally thought you were talking about selling the tops you made instead of a pattern.
1
u/Chemical_Ice5880 Aug 04 '25
Yeah once I master the pattern I’ll have way too many tops that I made for pictures so I’ll probably sell off a few of them.
1
u/KimiMcG Aug 02 '25
Are they lined? I'd be concerned about the nipple slip. And as a lady with bigger boobs, none of those would fit me.
2
u/Chemical_Ice5880 Aug 02 '25
Yes they’re lined! It sounds like a lot of people think adding a cup option would be better

Very cute but absolutely zero function for anyone over a c cup. Love the tapestry style triangles though! Very cute
2
u/SoggyMath2725 Aug 02 '25
I’d almost go the route of those traditional sewing patterns, and include two top variations (the bralette and a basic crop top with straps) and a skirt pattern, which I saw you mention!
You will be able to sell the bundle at a higher price, people will feel like they’re getting more value too ☺️
(By the way, this looks so rad—love it!)
1
u/Chemical_Ice5880 Aug 02 '25
Ohhhh do you think people would be happier with a tank top and matching skirt instead of the bikini? Or a combination of the tank top and bikini?
1
u/Miluiel1 Aug 03 '25
It definitely could be! But they lack support like others have said. I have seen people crochet into those bra pads so maybe that is something you can try
1
u/Warm-Fig-8566 Aug 03 '25
at first glance, the part holding the 2 cups together looks thin, but i could be wrong. thicken the straps, those most likely won’t hold over time for bigger boobs
2
u/Appropriate_Bottle70 Aug 03 '25
From a marketing perspective, I wouldn’t use the graffiti photo because it’s too busy and I couldn’t actually see the top at first and it looks FILTHY.

I crochet and I would 100% buy this, but it needs some work like the straps are a bit thin and the loose string at the end
1
u/No_Tumbleweed_1518 Aug 03 '25
There are people looking for these types of patterns, yes.
I don't understand why anyone is commenting about needing to make them larger/more shapely for bigger chests as if people with small/flat chests don't exist. Not everything is for YOU. Also, those commenting that the pattern looks too simple and you can "recreate it just by looking at it" - again, not everything is for YOU. There are plenty of people who don't want to bother with that and just want a pattern to follow.
I do agree about the straps being slightly thicker just for comfort - try slip stitching back down through your chains, it makes a great strap thickness without being too bulky.
ETA: you can offer each pattern as a stand alone pattern and then bundle them all together for a slight discount.

They're super cute BUT as a crocheter I wouldn't buy this pattern just because it looks super simple.
If I saw these at a craft fair though, I would be sorely tempted
