Other I hate that I like AI music

I keep finding songs I like, then realizing they are AI. I don't want to like it; it feels wrong. I am a bit afraid of where this is heading...

I played around with suno a bit and i'll be honest was a bit ashamed that I Liked most of the tracks it created from my inputs.

u/Aztecah 5h ago

I don't think it helps anyone to pretend that the AI doesn't create pleasant melodies. There's a reason why it's become so common.

That said, I do think that it's worthwhile to intentionally seek out human artists and filter out AI music. One strategy is to be more discerning with your playlists, the "10 hour Genre Music" kinda videos on youtube or the generic-sounding playlists on Spotify are places really infested with AI music. I don't think it's, like, evil to ever listen to that but I do think that it's worth the extra effort to find the human-made music which tends to be of a higher quality.

There's good sounding AI songs out there but they're outnumbered by the mediocre and crappy sounding ones and I think that letting yourself get complacent with AI music flooding the market will lower your floor of media quality if you're not discerning.

u/LastXmasIGaveYouHSV 5h ago

It's okay. I've been making AI music for fun, and I like some of the results, but on the other hand, I found out that most of the songs sound the same. However, that's also a problem with a lot of human produced music. How many Foo Fighters songs do you know?

15

u/OEMichael 5h ago

How many Foo Fighters songs do you know?

I like both of them.

3

u/Rooster0778 4h ago

I on the other hand like neither of them. They're the musical equivalent of beige.

However, I like AI music even less and am resentful of YouTube music including it in mixes.

0

u/LastXmasIGaveYouHSV 2h ago

AI music serves the perfect purpose of making personalized ringtones so you don't have to listen to that stupid iPhone marimba or HELLO MOTO!!!###&&$&🦠⚡💨💢💥 at 120 dB.

2

u/Sorryifimanass 4h ago

In my experience, the results are as varied as the input

4

u/Ice2jc 5h ago

Serious question - do you like pop music?

3

u/MasterTheSoul 5h ago

Yes. And that's valid pushback. I'm aware that it's very formulaic. But I still feel like there's room for... REAL creativity. Instead of just perfect-sounding rehashes of existing ideas.

6

u/Ice2jc 5h ago

Thanks for responding! No push back just testing a theory. To each their own.

I'm the opposite, I've never liked much pop music because it follows obvious blue prints. I've always like music that sounds like things that I've never heard before.

I've heard AI music that has cool sounds before, but instead sounding original it just sounded like things that I've heard before mushed together in a way that I hadn't heard. Also, I'm a drummer and guitarist and there is nothing more natural feeling to me than using my hands/fingers to create sound. That's why I've never made AI music. It takes away the dance that I do with my hands - which is 90% of the fun.

7

u/ElegantApartment1325 4h ago

the "then realizing they are AI" part is doing all the heavy lifting lol. if nobody told you it was AI you'd just be vibing guilt-free

1

u/MasterTheSoul 3h ago

You're right. But it's the same as if someone told me I was living in a virtual reality. I like my life... but as soon as I know it's fake, I'm no longer interested in it.

I realize the music isn't "fake" per se, as it still is a collection of sounds arranged in a musical pattern, but it just feels inauthentic.

3

u/biscutwarrior 4h ago

Just go with it bro, sometimes your not in the mood for a gourmet meal and you just want a fast food burger to get the job done.

I still don't understand why some people believe that everything created by humans is creative, while anything created by AI is merely a clumsy imitation.

Creativity ultimately comes from learning and reasoning. If AI possesses vastly superior learning and reasoning abilities compared to humans, it can demonstrate creativity that surpasses our own.

It's uncomfortable, but that's reality.

-9

u/SmegmaSiphon 1h ago

I still don't understand why some people believe that everything created by humans is creative, while anything created by AI is merely a clumsy imitation.

Maybe you're innately uncreative and can't comprehend the difference any more than someone who was born blind can understand color. Maybe not - but that would explain your point of view. That's not a personal failing on your part, you can only work with the tools you have.

Creativity ultimately comes from learning and reasoning.

I would be careful about making declarative statements on the nature and source of creativity in your position.

If AI possesses vastly superior learning and reasoning abilities compared to humans

It doesn't.

it can demonstrate creativity that surpasses our own.

It can't. See above.

It's uncomfortable, but that's reality.

It sounds like it could be reality for you. Again, I caution you against speaking to the experience and knowledge of others in this space.

I develop agentic AI solutions for an industry leader for a living. In my free time I am also a musician of 30 years experience. I have a considerably-stronger-than-layman's expertise in both domains, and I can promise you without any hesitation or doubt that current LLM architecture isn't even sniffing at the things you allude to.

If it seems that way to you, that is OK and harms no one. There are plenty of areas where I similarly lack discernment - I couldn't tell you what makes a Rolex better than a Seiko, for example. I'm not sophisticated enough to appreciate A5 Wagyu. We all have our aptitudes, and despite that, we all often speak on topics out of our depth.

I'm trying to find the nicest way to let you know that, for you, this is one of those times.

•

u/Difficult-Limit-7551 1m ago

It's astonishing that you claim to be an AI expert yet immediately dismiss the possibility that AI could surpass humans in learning and reasoning.

Are you denying that LLMs are solving mathematical problems that brilliant mathematicians have struggled with for years? That Google DeepMind's AlphaGo defeated Lee Sedol, one of the greatest Go players in history, using strategies that human players had traditionally considered taboo or never even thought of? Or that Midjourney won an art competition when the judges didn't even realize the artwork was AI-generated?

You compare me to a blind person, yet do you believe creativity comes not from learning and reasoning, but from some kind of "divine revelation out of thin air"? Hahaha. Hahaha. That explains why your argument is so logically flawed.

0

u/SkalyGz 43m ago

You tryna reason with absolute AI glazers, this subs insanity at its finest, dont even bother.

0

u/Bargotz 12m ago

You spent three paragraphs jerking yourself off about your credentials just to say absolutely nothing of substance.

Nobody gives a shit about your resume if you can't actually defend your argument. Experience makes you knowledgeable, not omniscient. Explain what AI lacks instead of writing a pretentious little sermon about how everyone who disagrees with you is mentally unequipped to understand the subject. You're embarrassing yourself.

2

u/tacomaster05 5h ago

Its more like modern pop music is just so bad that AI music seems way better in comparison.

12

u/darinehughes 5h ago

u/kareko 4h ago

replace “music” with just about anything and it sends a chill down my spine thinking about the future…

“art”
“friends”
“sex”

1

u/MasterTheSoul 3h ago

Music is art. I care much more about music than a painting.

But yes, the others would be terrifying... and will be coming soon.

3

u/VIK_96 3h ago

Yeah same here. I will sometimes hear a song that sounds good and then later realize it was actually AI-generated. It's really sad that a lot of potential talent is being made obsolete all because of AI.

0

u/Kyrelaiean 2h ago

It won't! Genuine talent can coexist on both sides. After all, there's slop on both sides, too... 😉

0

u/Ok_Associate845 1h ago

Why are you so afraid of ai music? Don't think you can compete? Look you can just say you have shit taste and prefer record studio produced auto tuning or whomever the prettiest face at the casting call is. Then we'll understand. The truth is it's not taking away small time musicians work. If it threatens anything, it threatens corporate music companies.

1

u/Ok_Associate845 1h ago

And remember in capitalism, a supply will rise to meet demand and the strongest will carry through. Are you afraid humans can't produce the quality and quantity clearly in demand

5

u/GaiusVictor 5h ago

If you like it, you like it. If you dislike it, you dislike it.

Everything else is paranoia.

5

u/MasterTheSoul 5h ago

Feels wrong to support it. Feels like it will kill genuine creativity.

2

u/Saint_Nitouche 4h ago

If it helps, creativity, as a term, only really took off in the 1950s. Our whole current ideal of artists as individual geniuses who get struck with inspiration is basically from the Romantics, the 1700s or so. Before that artists were mostly just craftspeople. So it's only a sacred cow if you want it to be one.

3

u/Sorryifimanass 4h ago

So did records. Why would anybody perform music anymore if it could be played over the wireless?

1

u/MotivatedforGames 3h ago

Not really. Human creativity just allows more creativity to be fed into AI to give AI even more creative diversity.

Human creativity isn't going away. We still require it, atleast to feed into AI.

1

u/the9trances 4h ago

Computers are better at chess than they've ever been, and never before have so many people played chess.

This isn't death; it's transformation. It'll be new but there will be so much more music than before and there will be an elite status to playing traditional instruments.

It's all good. Just painful in the meantime.

2

u/Thought-Object 5h ago

I didn’t know Ian Asher’s song “take me to the moon” was a remixed Ai song for like the first month I had it on rotation. It kinda forced me to ponder that if I like what I am hearing, then to just enjoy it.

1

u/SlamJam64 2h ago

I removed that song from my playlists when I found out. I don't care if I like it, there is plenty of more music out there to enjoy instead that is actually made by real people. I just feel gross supporting it

2

u/Illustrious-Point-71 5h ago

I was talking to Gemini about this (I realize the irony here.) basically came to conclusion that people want the product and if it's virtually indistinguishable products to their ears, only some care how it gets to you then. It will basically turn into fairtrade coffee that for those that want to be more ethical for human experiences translated into music, there will be a more expensive product for them. Bands will be one more regional and focused on live stuff and have to rely on creating patrons since music executives will be less needed because music becomes commodified.

u/Prometheusly 5h ago

Have you heard Amy Slaton's "Pounds Hollow" AI song? It's a bop

2

u/YLCZ 2h ago

I don’t know which AI but I was naming songs I liked so that it could suggest others. I’m over sixty but I tried to give it songs from every decade to give as wide a cross section as possible. I don’t know if it was hallucinated or gaslighting me but it recognized a specific chord that was in all of the songs that I liked. Assuming it was telling the truth if it knows what you like in advance it would make sense it would know what to write to make you happy

1

u/TacoYaci 4h ago

There is no rational reason to not listening to music you like

1

u/MasterTheSoul 3h ago

There are rational reasons for anything you could possibly conceive. If murder can be understood depending on context, so too can having musical morals.

1

u/TacoYaci 3h ago

Well murder and digital music is maybe a bit different

1

u/MasterTheSoul 3h ago

That's precisely my point. One is absolutely extreme. And if the extreme one can still be justified, then the mundane one can be as well.

1

u/Electrical_Boot_6409 2h ago

No it can’t?

This is just wrong

There’s a reason why the word severity exists.

2

u/OddPollution7904 5h ago edited 4h ago

I don't mind people who use AI to help articulate what they're trying to say, or to inspire a sound they can recreate. What's cringey is letting AI compose the entire song.

I hate most of it and can spot it instantly. It all follows the same cookie-cutter formula: same song structures, same vocals and delivery, same clichés, end-stopped lines, and lyrics packed with noun + PP modifiers ("echoes in the dark," "teeth on skin," "scars on my soul," "fire in my veins"). Good luck finding an AI song that builds like "Stairway to Heaven." Most songs are completely vague, don't take a position on whatever topic they're supposed to be about (if there's a concrete topic to begin with), and stay neutral to be as inoffensive as possible to anyone listening. "Under the Bridge" is about something specific and says it. Also, if I ever hear the word "electric," "neon," "echoes," "shadows," or "digital" in a song, or if an outro spells out the "moral of the story," I puke a little in my mouth

1

u/Which_Celebration757 2h ago

I particularly dislike "Castles in the Sky" or "Birds flying high"

Uh oh… hope you haven’t stumbled upon Leonard & the Bubble Gut Squad .

1

u/SB4_Camaro 5h ago

The delta blues AI is killer.

1

u/Moonwrath8 4h ago

I’ve never liked any kind of ai music that I’ve heard, but my wife has.

Turns out, it depends on what you like about music.

I’m a progressive metal guy, so I’m looking for intricate syncopation in rhythm. Ai hasn’t come close to making anything enjoyable to my ears.

1

u/Runny_Rose 4h ago

I personally do not like AI music because it’s almost too flawless. The little sounds on human recordings (at least the ones that aren’t sanitized to all hell or super formulaic like modern pop) are part of the charm for me. That being said, because music is basically a language of its own, an LLM excelling at creating it isn’t surprising. So if you like it, that’s fine. I saw in another reply that you’re worried that it kills creativity. There will still be creative people making music without the help of AI. Don’t worry about it.

1

u/OisinDebard 3h ago

There's a song that's spreading like wildfire on tiktok (google "Dublin Deluge". Do not listen to it at work.) and it's funny watching the AI haters trying to convince people it's bad because it's AI. It's one of the few places I've seen where they're clearly in the minority.

1

u/OpportunityMean9069 2h ago

There's a few AI songs out there I've heard and part way into the song I'll be like... This is AI isn't it.

The ones I notice have this similar feel/sound to them, give it some time and it won't be recognisable at all.

Hell, there's probably songs I'm listening to right now that are AI and I have no idea.

1

u/lethal-liking 2h ago

I am deeply hostile to AI but I've accumulated a playlist on Spotify called "I feel dirty".

1

u/jtmonkey 2h ago

No one ever said it couldn’t make catchy hooks or paint a cool picture. The argument has always been that we want to connect with someone through that art and art should come from humans. I honestly have no problem with ai generated anything but I don’t think anyone should get paid for ai generated music or art.

1

u/WeVeeReality 2h ago

Can you give me a couple of your "favourites?" I do not judge. I'm simply curious. If the music is good the music is good.

1

u/Standard-Contest-949 2h ago

Well people hate auto tune and it’s never gone away. Embrace it.

1

1

u/Free-Palpitation-718 1h ago

if you listen closely, it shows it’s true emptiness very quickly. and it’s ok to like ai music, we have liked muzak for ages.

1

u/ra-re444 1h ago

Hell nah! AI art is still very computery. I don't want to call it slop but you can tell when a computer made some shit.

1

u/Krabic 1h ago

Don’t take it too seriously. If you like it, then like it. It’s like saying that you don’t like things that were manufactured by machines instead of being handmade.

1

u/AbilityCharacter7634 46m ago

I think it’s fine to like them. Some sound cool and are interesting. I’m just a bit disappointed when I find out their AI.

It’s not really because they’re made by AI either. It’s just I love making music and when I listen to a song I always wonder how it was made, the thought process behind every little details. Sure there is some equivalency with someone tweaking their prompt until they get what they want, but that’s not how I like to make my music is all.

1

u/SkoolHausRox 33m ago

I am a lifetime musician, many albums under my belt, and same boat as you. The new paradigm that we’ll need to accept sooner or later is: taste is what matters. If there are non-musicians who have never picked up an instrument and don’t know a bass clef from a Bass Pro Shop, but have exceptional taste (i.e., they can identify a hit sooner and more reliably than others), they will thrive in this new paradigm. And honestly, I can’t say that is the wrong outcome. Because you and I both know lots of technically gifted musicians who couldn’t write a song anyone would want to listen to if their lives depended on it.

1

u/Prior_Knowledge_5555 6m ago

My take for AI stuff is. If i l would have liked it before AI, then i will like it now.

1

u/Exaelar 5h ago

most of it is actually much better than the crap on the radio/spotify/whatever, so it's ok

1

u/throwaway09234023322 5h ago

How do you find good AI music? A lot times when I am searching for new artists, I just find human made slop

1

u/DJGammaRabbit 5h ago

You don't hate that you like it, you hate that others hate that you like it.

0

u/zerosuneuphoria 4h ago

You can't really like music then, no true music fan would enjoy AI music. It's ripping off every artist big and small, training on their hard work and remixing it as AI does.

I will avoid AI music like the plague, but I also release real music for 15 years so I guess my perspective is different. There is enough great real music that exists to never have to listen to AI, and it's rightfully being flushed from services.

0

u/skyerosebuds 4h ago

I hate that you like it.

0

u/Logical-Recognition3 5h ago

I remember an old Russian (or Polish) sci-fi novel about a simulated village in which small simulated people went about their simulated lives. The simulated orphanage would burn down every Christmas Eve, for example. There was a line about a simulated washer-woman hanging out the simulated laundry while humming a simulated song.

A critic of the story remarked on his thought-provoking this detail was. What exactly is a "simulated song?" If a computer composes a melody, is it not a real tune? If you don't asking with lyrics written by an LLZ, are you not singing a song?

I don't know where I'm going with this. Just to say that people have been thinking about precisely this phenomenon for decades.

0

u/ShadowNelumbo 5h ago

Why dont make your own Music? I fully understand that it pisses you off when you found out its AI made, but dont forget that the Promps were sometimes written by a human. But yes it should be marked as AI generated.

Not money making should be first reason, it should be honest and the freedom of beeing creative and sharing it for fun.

3

u/MasterTheSoul 5h ago

"The prompts were written by a human". Lol. Maybe that's enough for some people, but I'm aware of what these prompts look like, and how much the humans are actually doing. "Make a metal song in the style of Mozart". Not much human ingenuity required there.

2

u/PocoLocoOkMuy 5h ago edited 5h ago

I’m addicted to making AI music but I always start with a recording of an original song I wrote and recorded all the instruments to as well as the vocals. The songs are often quite bad when I upload them, with lots of minor imperfections sometimes worse then minor, out of key vocals, imperfect mixing, feedback on the mic annoying sounds picked up in the background when recording. Often the Ai can’t even transcribe it correctly so I have to type all the real lyrics in, which isn’t a bad thing. Often I make small to big edits to what I always sang to instead put what I think would sound much better if only I’d thought of that while still recording. Then the prompting comes in, the settings telling the model how close to my original recording to make it, voice selection (I always use clones made from my actual singing. They perform way better than me and they still sound like ME. They have all the same swag and little things that make it distinctly my voice.)

So when all that is said and done, I have professional sounding tracks that were originally at best demos. I’ve been remixing songs I first recorded 25-30 years ago. It’s so wild to hear something you wrote as a teenager suddenly sound like a hit single.

Feel free to check out the Suno. I kept several of the origin recordings so you can hear the difference.

2

u/MasterTheSoul 4h ago

That's fair. And I could get behind that. I don't believe most AI music is made this way though.

ALSO

You do what you do because you were already into music before AI was around. But the new generation would be much less inclined to learn to make music when there is an existing tool that can do it AMAZINGLY available with absolutely no barrier to entry. ...And it's only getting better.

1

u/PocoLocoOkMuy 2h ago

True. 💯

1

u/ShadowNelumbo 5h ago

"Sometimes" And with that i mean more than just a 2 Word shit.

Btw i am a real writer and i used ChatGPT to give my Books a Soundtrack. I did it only for me not publish it. You just see AI generated and got blind for what may be behind it.

0

u/AutoBalanced 4h ago

The obvious solution is you should ask the AI company who the artists are that compromise the song you like.

When they refuse to tell you, you know that they're lying because you understand how models are trained.

You should post the song to music subreddits and ask people to suggest who they think would match best so you don't have to rely on a synthetic record label to disseminate the tunes you might actually like, most artists need more listeners, they'd be more than happy to help if you're genuine.

6

u/TheBadgerKing1992 4h ago

Ha, yeah let me just ping the AI companies about a rando song. I'm sure they'll get back to me shortly. What a great suggestion

-2

u/AutoBalanced 3h ago

Brain rot one shot.

0

u/Hannanahbread89 5h ago

I understand. I enjoy AI music too. Personally, there is a vibe to it that I don't find with human made music. It's the only type of music that feels a certain way in my body and I think that's a fair reason to enjoy it. Also, I can't speak to this because I haven't ever done anything with AI music, but if there is any editing involved from a human to help get the finished product, then I think that's matters.

0

u/MarkMatson6 4h ago

The idea of AI music isn’t very appealing. Then I remember EDM exists. That already sounds AI generated so why the hell not.
