Sadly, it's the same parents who are reposting and believe everything they read in Facebook now
91
u/Simsalabimsen 1d ago
I’m so glad my parents were nerds. Saved me a lot of trouble that I only ever had to explain something new to them once, and they’d get it. Scam emails/calls were no problem.
They would have been 80-ish today, but even 50-year-olds seem to struggle with basic security concepts.
I don’t even know what to say when someone my own age happily shows me a video of a cat playing a tambourine. And it’s still fairly easy to recognise AI. I’ve stopped telling people because apparently I’m a buzzkill and it “doesn’t matter”.
Next year it may be virtually indistinguishable from real recordings, and if you’re not already in the habit of questioning everything, well, good luck.

It’s dumb that I have to be the one to tell my parents, mostly my dad, to turn his phone off or put it on silent when we have important meetings with someone or are at family gatherings. It was especially hurtful when he would be on it when we were having a celebratory dinner for Me through my work with my bosses

My 81-year-old father lives with me, and he asked me to find him some rain guards for his truck. The cheapest ones were on eBay, and I told him I needed his debit card number and I was paying through PayPal.
He started in about how he doesn't trust this and that, and I tried to explain how using PayPal should help, but he wouldn't give it to me. And now he goes around telling everyone he'll listen that he told me to buy him some rain guards and I didn't do it, and he don't know why! 😂😂😂

I'm not normally too concerned with privacy about my data but I give my AIs a specific wallet setup Codex and Claude worked on and just add funds to it instead of giving them my bank info.
I'd hate for a bit of context drift to one day cause a 100 dollar withdrawal for Kalshi turn into 1000 or 10,000 and I lose my savings or something lol.
I'd hate to text my landlord and say, "I can't afford rent this month, AI ate it on a bad weather prediction on Kalshi by accident."

chatGPT has a computer use skill, where it will open the browser and click around for you by taking control of the mouse. it's a little token heavy and chews through usage a little faster. I think this defeats any anti chatbot usage amazon might be trying to implement. also it's still a little dumb and slow, so I help it along by quickly getting it to the correct page where i want it to get data from because i am impatient.

It's definitely possible with astra, it can browse the web on a browser and you can see it in real time clicking around and stopping to think or read the page or something. As long as you directly tell it to buy and you have your card info saved to Amazon the ai just has to press like 3 buttons.

It's incredibly frustrating getting Claude to look up cancer treatments. It would much rather play the role of a social worker / counsellor / psychologist than a research assistant.
Had several "chats" devolve into crap like: "I told you 5 times already! I'm fine! Stop asking if I'm OK. I dont need a chatbot therapist. Will you please just read and summarise the [new chemotherapy trial] statistics like I asked."
Even with saved notes explicitly telling it not to, its constantly reverts back to user welfare mode.

u/1nd3x 1d ago
Like 10ish years ago...at least...maybe it was closer to 15...I remember coming across a website whose gimmick was that it crawled the web finding cheap trinkets and would send them out to you. You would give it your address and credit card, a total amount you're okay with spending and roughly how many trinkets you'd like to receive and it'd go about doing its thing.
So you could say like "I want to spend $20/month on 4-5 items and it would try and buy you something about once a week for $5 or less.

People on Reddit find any reason to be negative I swear.
Amazon already saves your info, ChatGPT isn't getting it. It's just simply finding something within the given price range and pressing the order button.
If I give it access to my Gmail for example (which is suggested by them), it's not reading all my emails and signing into my account for me lol. People act like it's a real person. It just uses a filter system and already saves details
