As a mathematician working at an AI research center the problem is not really that OpenAI 'solved' a lot of problems, it's how they did it.
They basically went ahead, dropped 500 unverified claims and said they proved 500 unsolved math problems. Now I am not on a level to understand most of these problems as they are apecific. But forging a proof is rarely a 'I'll just fucking drop my proof' thing. It's a collaborative effort, they should have went through the basic fucking review process that everybody does instead of claiming something to fuel the hype.
It's the same like with the huggingface incident. Instead of OpenAI saying they fucked up because they werent able to set up a stupid industry standard isolated environment, they just 'ooooh our AI so scary, lied to us and betrayed us ooooh, you can buy the crazy smart thing btw.'
OpenAI and basically all of these large closed source companies are just fucking with us to make a buck and it discredits all of the actual research that both we in open source do and their real researchers do.
Spamming AI generated submissions is being used for a lot of things and it's a real problem. People do it with resumes, open source patch requests, bug bounties, government contracts, etc. It's created a ton of work filtering through junk submissions from people who use AI to generate them and then either don't have the competency to evaluate what the AI generated or don't want to spend the time doing it.
AI allows people to appear to have competence in subjects they don't and also allows them to generate submissions to various things in almost no time. It's wasting a lot subject matter experts' time reviewing and weeding out the low quality or outright wrong ones.
I recently applied to a major university for an administrator position that I am highly qualified for and I spent about a day or two crafting a very detailed cover letter and tailored CV to only get my application immediately rejected. when I called the HR contact to ask why my application didn't warrant at least a conversation, they said it was auto filtered for being AI generated.
