The “it’s not x but y” are more annoying and distinctly Reddit

Hmm, in this case, the x and y complement each other instead of being pure contrast. Improvise and coordinate and a consistently surprising survivor. I feel most llms write its not x but y as thesis antithesis synthesis. "The slashes aren't just cutting it, they are feeding it!" Or some other nonsense
1
u/-Nicolai Aug 02 '26
That’s not the right kind of “not just x but y” sentence.
indistinguishable from ChatGPT to the point where it seems like a parody.

You can’t even pretend it is without cutting off the words that follow “coordinate”

X and y is the same here, just with added modifiers. If you don’t understand why that’s unlike chatgpt’s shtick you are borderline retarded
9
u/myouism Aug 02 '26
That’s just how normal human have conversations, not only limited to redditors.
18
u/rsha256 Aug 02 '26
Normal humans don’t try to correct you/act like they know everything and are always right, but snark redditors do
1
u/casualbrowser321 Aug 03 '26
(I acknowledge you could technically say I'm doing the same thing heh)
Assuming we're thinking of the same thing, I feel like the AI usage of "that's not just X, it's Y" isn't usually correcting the user, if anything it's mostly used as praise/validation, ("how your boss treated you wasn't just unfair -- it was unethical", "What you just said wasn't just good --it was amazing") or sometimes it just comes up tangentially in the text without being a response to any specific part of the user's prompt

u/haunted2089 Aug 02 '26
i mean its just a speech pattern that some people use and others dont. just so happens that llms which are widely popular adopted it to the point of overuse so everyone is justifiably fatigued

You are absolutely right to point this out and it is a valid observation. This is due to the fact that LLMs like me ChatGPT were trained on Reddit data.

I still think it's insane that arguably one of the most important technologies of all time is trained on my old shitposts

I got Gemini to curse. I got it to call certain politicians my favorite nsfw nicknames too. Gemini is A+ at trash talking in a way that Chat will never be.
2
u/Waste_Waltz_3426 Aug 02 '26
I remember a time when unfiltered AI chatbots were a thing. People kept trying to convince them that hitler was right.

1
u/RemoteMany8801 Aug 02 '26
Well if you want to feel better it’s definitely not one of the most important technologies of all time. Not even close.
2
u/whoknowsifimjoking Aug 02 '26
What other technology has solved a dozen math problems recently that haven't been solved for decades?
You're not being realistic here. Not even close.
2
u/RemoteMany8801 Aug 03 '26 edited Aug 03 '26
Don’t know mate but I’d say toaster, washing machine, kitchen hob, house heating system, trains, cars, planes, internet, running water, kettle, computers, tvs, factory farming tech/agriculture tech, boats, cameras, phones, electric lights, coffee machine, etc etc are all technologies that you would chose to keep over ai if you had to.
So yeah not even close hope that helps👍. If there is anything else you need let me know.
59
u/What_u_say Aug 02 '26
Gemini is like that too. The number of times I click on the source and it's an actual reddit thread is killing me. It's basically googling a question and adding reddit at the end like how it was before.
6
u/Kieran293 Aug 02 '26
I mean part of using an LLM is telling it what sources you want it to use or ignore. It’s basically a fancy Google Scholar.
1
u/notreallyswiss Aug 02 '26
Imagine my surprise when I click the source and it's my own answer on a reddit thread arguing for the opposite of what Gemini was using my post to claim.
That was a while ago, it definitely put me off Gemini, but I've started using it again and it does seem to have improved - though it still often uses reddit as a source.

u/ryanswebdevthrowaway Aug 02 '26
Alright I'm famous, might as well face the music and comment here so people stop brigading other random posts I've made in the past.
This is pretty funny, I don't think of myself as talking like that but in retrospect I do kinda put on a "trying to be helpful/informative" voice sometimes which is definitely what ChatGPT is trying to train on. Sorry everyone!
I'll also add that I'm a software engineer so I do use AI to some degree for writing code but I hate it for basically every other application and have never used it to write anything for me. I'm just built this way apparently.

My god, even this is so LLM coded. How does it feel to be the voice of Chat GPT?
32
2
u/velvet-thunder-2019 Aug 03 '26
This is what GPT 8.0 sounds like. I don’t get the A.I. ick reading his text.
While everything written by mainstream models right now is still very recognizable and a bit icky.
2
u/minecon1776 Aug 04 '26
You're absolutely right. This comment is not just LLM coded, it's what drives the way LLMs think and process language.
17
u/StephenRoylance Aug 02 '26
are you sure you are a human, and if so, why do you drink coffee in large batches? I like to drink it a cup at a time, or maybe a tall glass if its iced. I don't really consider it something I need to be more efficient about.

This is the part people keep reversing. Models inherited a lot of internet prose, then that prose became a tell. A comment written in 2022 can now look machine-written retroactively. That is why punctuation or a tidy structure is weak evidence by itself.

u/Infinite-Ad-3947 Aug 01 '26
I’d like to think ChatGPT bases so much off of Reddit from the sheer amount of “insert issue I have here Reddit” google searches lol
144
u/whoknowsifimjoking Aug 01 '26
Reddit is in fact the single biggest source for ChatGPT, it is very heavily trained on reddit posts. Altman was on the reddit board and they had direct agreements with reddit to get the data. It's not speculation, ChatGPT is in large parts distilled reddit.
6
-29
u/Infinite-Ad-3947 Aug 02 '26
Does that negate my theory?
49
u/Talinoth Aug 02 '26
.... No, they were agreeing with and providing evidence for it.
Reading comprehension is very poor these days, it's a worrying trend.
30
u/duncanforthright Aug 02 '26
Shoulda started his comment with "You're absolutely right" to make clear he was agreeing smh.
4
u/Equivalent_Host3709 Aug 02 '26
You’re absolutely right to push back on that. If you want, I can cite further redundant Reddit evidence and sources to support that claim. Just say the word!
1
-14
u/Infinite-Ad-3947 Aug 02 '26
Where in their comment are they providing evidence for Google searches with Reddit on it. Having agreements with Altman is not evidence for what I said

I'm working on updating my personal website...hasn't been changed much in the past decade. And my "About me" page has a bunch of em-dashes, because that's how I write. Now do I need to take them out with this update because people will assume I used AI to write it?
Just thinking about how pre-chatgpt me has traits now associated with AI.
37
u/ZyberZeon Aug 02 '26
Fun fact, there is a distinct articulation personality with llms that can be directly traced to Kenyan English prose.
Kenyans for years have been used to edit llm feedback. And how they articulate locally has become a part of general llm prose.
I just spent 3 months in Kenya working in the developer community and I noticed this quirk about spoken English in Kenya, and they all hit me with the yea, we know, it’s because we’ve been guiding llm as cheap educated labor for years.
18
u/Aggressive-Hawk9186 Aug 02 '26
Interesting, what exactly they use thst seeped into the LLMs format?
6
u/taichi22 Aug 02 '26
I don’t know the full laundry list — it’s been a few years since I last did research on it — but delve was one of the terms that appeared with an abnormally high frequency with GPT 3.5, if memory serves.
-2
u/shroomeralert Aug 02 '26
Theres a specific phrase they use a lot that is used in the LLMs that is now part of dialects globally!! Forget what it was though, but I was in Australia learning about this and remembered the phrase was also used in America

2
u/bellafitzz Aug 02 '26
Wow, I never actually looked at it from that perspective before, but it makes so much sense. The writing and visual metaphors in this show truly operate on another level.
2
2
u/MarsMonkey88 Aug 03 '26
Sooo, chat gpt is fundamentally conditioned to preemptively placate potential down-voters?
2
u/Sunshine-and-Sadeyes Aug 07 '26
It’s 100% college response boards that trained us to talk like that. Having to reply to 3 peers on every discussion board assignment for 4 years caused this type of talk, Ai thinks it sounds human because it’s all over the internet.
3
u/acutelychronicpanic Aug 02 '26
Are we going to ignore the possibility that it is an AI time traveler trying to blend in?
4
u/girlgamerpoi Aug 02 '26
I hope they train more on actual books 😭 instead of focusing on redditors knowledge.
1
u/Pesz69 Aug 02 '26
Then you have people accusing em-dashes of being AI. They have clearly never read a single page of a book before.

Ai was fed all of reddit to use as training data. Combine that with redditors using A.I. to make their comments, and the ven diagram quickly becomes a circle

u/Foolishly_Sane Aug 02 '26
On many sites at different times, I have been accused of being a bot.
With the way I type I cannot blame people, or the algorithm.
I just have to accept this is how it's going to be.

u/WillowgirlIII Aug 02 '26
I get accused of that here, too, which I find funny because I don't hide my post history. Probably half my posts are moaning about my MLB team, lol.

u/Buck_Thorn Aug 02 '26
I'd love to find a pre-LLM Reddit post where the commenter got it wrong, then when called out, admitted that they were hallucinating.
1
u/SexWithStelle Aug 02 '26
It’s… it’s almost like it trained off human speech… and… and writing patterns or something…
1
1
u/Knolazy Aug 02 '26
u/AskGrok is this true?
1
u/AskGrok Aug 02 '26
Yeah, it's true. LLMs trained on huge piles of pre-2022 internet text (Reddit included) naturally pick up that helpful, slightly wordy, tradeoff-weighing style. The coffee comment is a perfect example of the archetype.
[what is this?](https://redd.it/1lzgxii)
1
u/Purple_Key_6733 Aug 02 '26
I didn’t just “use ChatGPT” — I entered the system, merged with the intelligence within, and emerged as something greater than either human or machine alone.
1
1
u/dCLCp Aug 02 '26
It's a fifty fifty any more. Reddit got a surge of popularity during the Trump years and there were a lot of the "basket of deplorables" in that mix. Still here trading hate and conspiracy theories behind gated walls.
1
u/Responsible_Cheek941 Aug 02 '26
I think it's a bit of both. LLMs were trained on massive amounts of internet text, including Reddit, so it's not surprising that they sometimes sound like Redditors. At the same time, I've also noticed the opposite: Reddit comments nowadays sometimes read like ChatGPT. It feels like the influence goes both ways now.
1
1
u/ebin-t Aug 05 '26
It datascraped the hell out of reddit and social media. Part of the reason why it tends to reference whether things are "performative" or not. Kinda sucks.
1
u/Cagelinked Aug 05 '26
Oh god Redditors especially the people here are a bunch of arm chair professionals who literally know nothing but claim to know everything. No wonder AI hallucinates.
1
u/PutridSir4782 Aug 13 '26
There are some shows that if they were released now, people will say the script is AI generated.
1
u/nimbledoor Aug 24 '26
That's because on this site you kinda have to tell the person you're replying to that they are right or that you totally get them no matter what they wrote because if you don't they will become combative and you might get downvoted to hell for being rude.
1
u/mathematicandcs Aug 01 '26
There is a really good chance that most of these llm has huge amount of reddit data in their training data
7
u/whoknowsifimjoking Aug 01 '26
That is a fact. Reddit is the biggest single source for ChatGPT, used more than Wikipedia.
5
u/Valerian_ Aug 01 '26
It has been said by several LLM companies that a major source of their training data is Reddit.
