Name My Cats Help me rename my brother/sister tuxedo cats after their previous owner passed away

Hi I recently acquired brother and sister tuxedo cats after a friend of a friend passed away unexpectedly. They came named Thanos and Kang but their family couldn’t tell me which was which as those are both male marvel characters and said “we assume you’ll rename them bc it never made sense to any of us”. Their previous owner’s name was Mike so someone threw out Sully and Boo as a tribute to him but I’ve been trying them all out and they’re not sticking. I’d like to honor Mike in some way with the name but I’m also open to any other suggestions.

Update: To answer some of your questions. The cats are about 2 they’ve really only ever interacted with Mike as he lived alone and when visitors would come they would hide so no one has been able to identify his nicknames for them but I’m sure I will come up with my own with time. I’ve had them over a week now and they’ve adjusted better than I ever expected and are the snuggliest little things!

I’ve been trying Thanos and Kang their original names. As many of you suggested that the girl could be Kang which is what I’ve been rolling with but they don’t seem to react at all when I say their names. His family is insistent that I should not keep the names out of obligation and that they never thought the names suited as them. (They’re love bugs not villians) — I hadn’t even considered renaming them before they suggested this.

Other people have commented about bringing them to the vet to get microchipped. Unfortunately his family didn’t know what vet they went to but they will be going to my vet as soon as they’ve had a little more time to adjust to all this change. One roadblock I’m encountering is that I want to get pet insurance before going to the vet and I need to put a name on the policy and I’m a little worried that if I guessed wrong and the boy is actually Kang and the girl is Thanos I’m setting myself up for a lot of administrative confusion. Please let me know if I’m overthinking this! I honestly would not care about their names right now if I didn’t have to get this paperwork figured out soon.

I'm sure they already have names, once that they have gone by their whole life. I'm pretty sure it would be kind to keep the names they have.

u/nwpackrat Jul 07 '26

Their vet probably knows. I had 2 nearly identical calicos & the vet made ID notes on their charts. Also, they may have chips

26

u/Kitchen_Society2618 Jul 07 '26

Yeah why didn't I think of that?

39

u/Present_Basis_1353 Jul 07 '26

I thought so too, but nobody knows which is which. Poor kitties lost their identity.

72

u/LisaCabot Jul 07 '26

Just call them and whoever ignores you the hardest is the owner of that name lol

12

u/Emergency-Guidance28 Jul 07 '26

This needs more up votes

2

u/LisaCabot Jul 08 '26

Ive always been a dog person, having cata is definetly different lol, specially with the name and calling things 🤣 i would call my bfs cat name and see my his ear twitch while he looks even more intenesely at... Air lmao

6

u/Present_Basis_1353 Jul 07 '26

🤣🤣🤣 💯

2

u/DenM0ther Jul 08 '26

This seems the most obvious. But do cats come to their names or is it more a ‘what’s in it for me’ kinda deal?

15

u/pinetreenoodles Jul 08 '26

Cats know their names but only answer to them if they reeeaaallly feel like it right at that moment.

7

u/MarionberryOk2874 Jul 08 '26

I have two that might come if they feel like it, and one that comes bolting in to a screeching halt as if to say ‘WHAT IS IT?!’

2

u/Frequent_Couple5498 Jul 08 '26

Cats know their names and others names too. My mom had 2 cats and a dog. My cousin, who was not an animal person could not believe that her cats knew their names and each others names too.

She would call each of their names and watch the one who she called look at her and the other 2 look at the one she called as if to say she's calling you, bro. My cousin would crack up in disbelief every time.

Cats are way way smart they are just stubborn.

6

u/Ozuule Jul 08 '26

I have three cats. All three have a list of about 15 individual names we call them by. Just amalgamations of their actual names..like Peter goes by Mr pie, Peter pie, handsome man, ect. They will all individually react to when you say their name, as in they will look at you. They absolutely know their names, all 15 of them, but cats are not dogs. They will not come to you unless they want to. So they know their names but it's absolutely a what's in it for me situation.

u/omgee1975 Jul 08 '26

My cats definitely know their own names.

2

u/Lost_it_all24 Jul 08 '26

I trained my cats to come to me when I called them. They definitely know their name. I came to realize that my cats could understand a lot more of things than what they were supposed to do. And I'm including my brain dead ones that didn't have two brain cells to rub together.

2

u/coastkid2 Jul 08 '26

Our cats know their names and immediately look at you or come when you call them. We have 3!

2

u/Afraid_Yellow8430 Jul 08 '26

Mine won’t come to me but she will react when she hears her name

2

u/MarionberryOk2874 Jul 08 '26

LMAO - this poster knows how to cat

2

u/Frequent_Couple5498 Jul 08 '26

All my cats through the years were like this except one Scamp. When you called his name he came running and meowing to say hello pick me up now and give me turkey.

They are gorgeous babies. Mork and Mindy.

13

u/asmnomorr Jul 07 '26

Another thing is they probably have nicknames and their owner may have not even used their original names by the time he passed.

2

u/Mindless_Drummer_499 Jul 07 '26

My brother and his wife haven't even called their son his name yet and he's 2. They don't regret naming him, he just is gonna end up being Mogley until he's 3 probably.

40

u/Kitchen_Society2618 Jul 07 '26

I don't think they lost their identity, I think that's on people. They know who they are!!!

12

u/Present_Basis_1353 Jul 07 '26

Ya true! They seem unbothered😂

5

u/Mindless_Drummer_499 Jul 07 '26

I always name pets and within a year they have three nicknames that are better. My cats name was Rue but ended up being called big piggie cuz she makes pig noises.

3

u/Present_Basis_1353 Jul 07 '26

Alright scratch those ideas. Fonz and Richie, Gillian and Skipper

11

u/madasabatt Jul 07 '26

I would try and call the names and see if they respond. They do know their own names and respond to them (when in the mood)

3

u/Kitchen_Society2618 Jul 07 '26

Lol, when in the mood. I love that.

21

u/Lemmmonsss Jul 07 '26

Maybe read the blurb they took their time to write and explain

3

u/Kitchen_Society2618 Jul 07 '26

Oh I read it, but you can't force me to agree, because I don't.

3

u/Theatrical-Vampire Jul 07 '26

I don’t know if all cats know their names even as adults. We adopted my mom’s cat at around three years old and the shelter said his name had been Hoku since he was brought in as a kitten. He barely responded to it, got rechristened Herbie and figured out he was Herbie now within the hour (at least as far as he ever figures anything out, being an orange who is yet to have the brain cell). Plus there’s all the stray cats who get taken in as adults and renamed, they don’t seem to have issues. My sister’s cats were abandoned by their owners at around four and we have absolutely no clue what their names were, but they adapted to what she named them pretty much immediately. It’s more the tone than anything that cats recognize, maybe certain sounds if they’ve had a name for awhile, but I’ve never known one to not adapt to a new name pretty fast.

u/sophstrophs Jul 07 '26

Right? I feel they would respond and OP could pick up on it.

2

u/awesomesteins Jul 08 '26

Think about all of the stray animals who get renamed when they get adopted. I don't think they care what they're named, but that they are loved ❤️

2

u/Kitchen_Society2618 Jul 08 '26

You are absolutely right!! My idea was only to keep from stressing them further in the beginning by trying different names. And since I've had time to think about it, I don't think they would come to the new people. In the beginning. Of course they're unsure or afraid, and even if you called their name as a stranger they probably wouldn't come. But yes, the fact that they have a Home is the blessing! And I never knew this thing would go this far, are you kidding me? I seen things go in high numbers before, but this is nuts.

2

u/ging3rtabby Jul 10 '26

Eh, many cats receive a new name when adopted and do great. It's as much about tone as it is the actual name. My cats each have and answer to several nicknames. One of my cats comes no matter who's name is called. He just hears one of his humans calling for a cat and he comes running. Not saying there aren't cats out there that could struggle with it, but I've never come across one.

2

u/Most_City_5928 Jul 11 '26

If someone takes in two cats who need a home, rename them if you want. Whatever helps keep your home and environment happy for all parties. Names can be changed or appended. What matters most is they are loved

2

u/Klutzy_Yam_343 Jul 07 '26

Yea I find it odd to rename grown cats unless it was just a shelter name they were just given upon intake. Cats know their names!!

These two are absolutely adorable.

2

u/Kitchen_Society2618 Jul 07 '26

I absolutely agree

u/Important_Sport_8006 Jul 07 '26

I would give it some time. Let them get used to you and continue using their established names. Are they microchipped? If so a vet could help you establish which is which. Otherwise, keep saying one of their names and see which responds more clearly, and you will figure it out.

25

u/According-Club4874 Jul 07 '26

Boris and Natasha (from Rocky & Bullwinkle)

5

u/cmbni Jul 07 '26

The names of my very first pets. My parents had two Russian blues before I was born. They were the best cats. RIP!

38

Jordan (for the girl) and Jackson

(both last names of people named Mike)

38

u/Eiffel-Tower777 Jul 07 '26

I wouid allow them to keep their original names. ♥️

29

u/Leggomymego818 Jul 07 '26

This was the plan but as I said in my post idk which is Thanos and which is Kang and they don’t seem to respond to either

34

u/SpeckledVoidCat Jul 07 '26

Oh they don’t respond at all? Then their government names are useless 😂 they’re probably more like mister kitty and madam mittens

20

u/EscapeTheSecondAttac Jul 07 '26

Are they microchipped? Not entirely sure how it works but that might their names might be on them? To hazard a guess tho I reckon Thanos is the boy and Kang is the girl

6

u/lifewith6cats Jul 07 '26

Mine have their names on their microchips

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Serononin Jul 07 '26

My dog's chip definitely has her name on it - I remember because whoever input her details into the system spelled it wrong the first time round, so we had to contact the company to correct it

23

u/Public-Map-8515 Jul 07 '26

You're in a pickle. Maybe give them a little more time to adjust to their new environment? They must be very confused right now. Let them settle in for a few days and then gently say one name  -- see if one perks up or looks at you. Good luck to you all.

5

u/Kitchen_Society2618 Jul 07 '26

Very good advice

2

u/mailbroad Jul 08 '26

Mr. Pickles and Olive

6

u/Artemis1911 Jul 07 '26

Thank you for giving these beauties a home ❤️It’s the saddest thing when family won’t take them or their person had no family and loved animals go to shelters or worse. What about Misha (Russian nickname for Micheal, and has a sound that cats will respond to more easily than Thanos or Kang) and Nico? Very heroic sounding names

4

u/breezynfl Jul 07 '26

Please don't forget they are grieving over the loss oc their owner and the only home they have ever known. Please give thrm time for this!!

5

u/alikashita Jul 07 '26

Don’t worry about people saying you shouldn’t rename them. It’s very common and not unkind for adopters to rename cats. Cats have many names in their lives, just listen to the Cats soundtrack

3

u/Ok_Amphibian_8864 Jul 07 '26

True. And people often take in strays who have had a previous home, unbeknownst to them. What are the chances that the new home would end up giving them the same name as the old home? Plus, many cats have several nicknames which they respond to.

I personally would say to keep their names if the respond to them; but if they don't, giving them a new name doesn't hurt.

5

u/Human_Ice6710 Jul 07 '26

I think you should keep their original names. My assumption would be that the girl cat is Kang.

4

u/Adventurous_Name_711 Jul 07 '26

Tex ,n rex

15

Rexford approves.

10

u/crucklescuffy Jul 07 '26

He looks like trouble, I love his face

2

u/HouseofMittens Jul 08 '26

He is pure adventurous trouble. When he goes to his Grandparents they have to put sticks to block drawers and cabinets. He definitely keeps me on my toes. His brother is the complete opposite. 🐈‍⬛♥️♥️

5

u/EmotionalGate7565 Jul 07 '26

May I suggest this to honor the late Mike:
Ro Phone
Ro Bio

6

u/SpeckledVoidCat Jul 07 '26

Well… does either respond at all when you say those names? That’s a lot of change at once, I’d be hesitant to change their names 🥺

7

u/SpeckledVoidCat Jul 07 '26

If I had to guess, thanos is a VERY well known character- I’d bet that’s the boy. Marvel’s Kang is a male character but it’s an androgynous sounding name- I’d bet that’s the girl

Obv I’m just guessing …
Did the previous owner have an instagram or facebook or something where they maybe posted about them? I can’t resist posting my cats constantly.

I do like the sully and boo idea, that’s cute.

3

u/Superb-Coyote5972 Jul 07 '26

3

u/IndividualSimple9876 Jul 07 '26

I’m just here to admire how gorgeous they are.

3

→ More replies (1)

3

u/CarpetScary684 Jul 07 '26

Have you taken them to the vet to see if they’re micro chipped if they are they’ll have names associated with them or just go to the vet that your friend used. I think you honor your friend by leaving their names as is.

2

u/GoodCalligrapher1343 Jul 07 '26

Mikey and Celia (Monsters Inc again, but I think they would be cute)

2

u/AdventurousStore2021 Jul 07 '26

And they don’t respond when you call their names? My cats all respond and definitely know their names vs just me calling for “kitty” etc.

2

u/Kitchen_Society2618 Jul 07 '26

Can't you call one name and see who comes?

2

u/NaNaNaNaNatman Jul 07 '26

Berlioz and Marie (siblings from Aristocats) if you have to choose new names. But I agree with other commenters that it would be best to use their existing names.

2

u/top_value7293 Jul 08 '26

I have a tortie cat whose owner passed away. Her name was Elvira. Her name is still Elvira. It will always be Elvira. She knows it

3

u/SeaConfusion8509 Jul 07 '26

Y would you rename

4

u/jowco Jul 07 '26

Mulder and Scully - if they don't respond it's only because you don't know the truth.

2

u/pebbles_temp Jul 07 '26

Mickey and Gabe. And ode to the archangels: Michael and Gabriel. Mickey is a nn for Michael.

Edit: I'm seeing that it's a brother and sister. So you could do Mickey and Gabriella/Gabby. Or Michelle and Gabe.

If they're not responding to their names my guess is the owner probably ran through many nicknames with them like most of us do LOL my boys name is Sancho. And after 11 years he only responds to tinky boy and tanch.

I have no suggestions but ultimately whatever you pick they will learn in time. They are probably stressed and just trying to learn their new environment.

1

u/bethhannen Jul 07 '26

Kate and Theo. I have 3 cats. As I didn't know their names they were given new names. One answers to his name and the other two ignore me unless they want something like food or cuddles. I just go along with that. It was good of you to give them a home,

1

u/stremendous Jul 07 '26

I would imagine they are chipped and that would tell you the answer if scanned. Also, their vet likely could identify them and tell you the differences between them. Also, many pet owners share pictures on social media... so I.am hoping a family member or friend can make it crystal clear for you. (I apologize in advance if you have already gone down these routes.)

1

u/No_Purchase_3532 Jul 07 '26

Chumley & Tennessee

1

u/LiveNeedleworker7717 Jul 07 '26

What weee their names? Come up with something similar, but that you like, so it sounds familiar and they’re comfortable with it. Then they’ll just think you’re bad a pronouncing names.

I loved that song. ( Yes. I’m certified Old.)

1

u/Baxtercat1 Jul 07 '26

I think they know their names. I would keep them. (names)

1

u/RustledForeskin Jul 07 '26

Place two food bowls down with their names on them and just start calling them by the name of the bowl they go after.

1

u/Ok-Bus-6331 Jul 07 '26

Just keep the names they already know. To change them would be a little cruel.

thanks for taking them in. they look so sweet.
🖤🤍🥰🤍🖤

1

u/Tenn-38016 Jul 07 '26

Unless these are very young cats and were not with their previous owner for very long, then these cats already have names that they know and since they are probably already traumatized and confused, changing their names will just make it worse.

1

u/Necessary-Quiet-Y Jul 07 '26

Theodore and Simone

1

u/minkamagic Jul 07 '26

Please keep their names. Try calling them and see who comes to you.

1

u/CatSockFiend Jul 07 '26

Try calling them by their current names. If they respond, it’s probably easier to stick with those names. If they don’t respond (mine wouldn’t whether because they’re cats or because I’ve called them a variety of nicknames throughout their lives), then rename them and don’t worry about whether they respond to them or not. Training them to respond at all would take consistency, treats, and luck/inclination.

As far as what names, I thought of the cartoon French cat & the skunk:
Pepe le Pew & Penelope Pussycat (though I’ve heard cats stop listening after 2 syllables).

1

u/CypressRootsMe Jul 07 '26

They’re cute! I used to have bother and sister tuxedo cats named Fred and Ginger. I’m sure most people won’t know who they are.

Randall instead of Boo cause animals should have 2 syllable names 😌

Unless you find out their actual names from their microchips and keep those instead

Why so you have to rename them?

1

u/TheSwearJarIsMy401k Jul 07 '26

When I’m naming cats I usually come up with a list and just start throwing names at them until they respond to one. Some of them answer to the first name I offer, some stare at me as I run through all my favorite names and hit on one I threw out as a joke.

Why? You don’t rename people when their caregivers die.

Mulder and Scully

Why would you rename them. I’m sure they are confused enough

The Maestro and Thel

When you call their names they don’t look up? Agree with keeping original names and figuring it out. Thanks for looking out for them.

Ramos and Fang.

(But seriously, the names the original owner gave them will honor him most.)

u/Personal-Piglet1397 Jul 07 '26

At there ages,I don't think they will accept new names.can you not find details about them or owner an see what they are called.its tough one.

1

u/StoveGeek Jul 07 '26

I agree that they should remain the same as before. Losing their human and having to change homes is enough.

Gorgeous kitties

1

u/Skywriter1166 Jul 07 '26

Poor babies. You're so sweet to take them in.

1

u/crowfvneral Jul 07 '26

why not let them keep their names? seems cruel to make them rememorize completely new commands while they're still recovering from the loss of their owner. call the names and you'll eventually discover which one is which.

Marlene Dietrich and Fred Astaire, both of whom wore tuxedos

Awe! I miss my Lucky Boots.. He passed of a brain injury in a sudden thunderclap last month… he was my star!

1

u/Lowermains Jul 07 '26

They know their names however they’ve been traumatised and have shutdown a wee bit.

Give it time and you will learn who is who.

Respect, 🫡 for taking them in and giving them a new home.

No offense but renaming them is a horrible thing to do. Their owner passed away, he didn't neglect or abandon them. I think it respectful and honoring to keep the name the original owner gave them.
