PSA: PLEASE think 10 times before you donate money to someone on this sub.

1.8k Upvotes

It's in our rules and we say it time and time again, but after the recent events from this post, the mod team wants to put out a reminder.

Look, we get it. Seeing cats in distress is hard. When people without money are expressing their inability to afford emergency care, it's distressing. You know we have rules against shaming people for being unable to afford care, and encouraging people to go into debt. But we also have rules against fundraising, and it's for a very good reason.

It is very easy for people without the best intentions to collect lots and lots of money from well meaning community members who are affected by what they see in images and video.

With this post in particular, several commenters encouraged the OP to share a gofundme (something strictly against our rules).

Once they created and shared one (without any bills to show and despite many of the top comments saying this was NOT an emergency), people felt bad and donated anyway.

The gofundme raised nearly $2000 and today we received the update that the cat, as many commenters predicted, is not dying and did not need emergency care.

We are now starting to see meta posts (another thing we don't allow) complaining that the OOP is not returning any of the extra funds, and is blocking users who donated asking for their funds back and proof of payment.

This is a story we see repeatedly in the sub. We don't always get to the donation links quick enough to remove them, and we can't stop you from DMing each other money, but this is why we caution PLEASE do not use this subreddit to send each other funds.

We are working on a Wiki with low-cost vet resources, at least in the US, but we get users posting from all over the world begging for money. DO NOT DONATE unless it is verified on a subreddit like r/gofundme or r/rescuecats, or is directly being paid to the VET (though we have seen scams happen internationally through this 'direct vet payment' as well).

PLEASE REPORT FUNDRAISERS. Please do not encourage fundraisers. We will start banning those who encourage it. Please help us keep this community safe from those with bad intentions.

Thank you and good day!

Announcement [READ THIS FIRST] r/CATHELP Rules Reminder

Hello there

Due to a growing number of cat crises and a surprising number of people who cannot read a sidebar, we’re now regularly posting this rules reminder. This is here to prevent both:

  1. repeat offenses, and
  2. the inevitable “I didn’t know!” mod mail we get after your post/comment disappears into the void.

If you're new (hi, welcome, pet your cat for us), or returning and rusty, please take a sec to read this. It’ll save you—and us—a lot of headache.

STRIKE POLICY: Break the rules once? We warn you. Break twice? Temp ban. 3 strikes is a perma-ban (unless you're a mega troll).

1. BE NICE

No, really. Be nice. You are talking to someone who is probably stressed, worried about their pet/a stray, and sleep-deprived. Reddit is not your venting space to shame people who are already anxious. Educate, don’t humiliate.
This includes a zero-tolerance policy for berating or shaming OPs. If you can't say it kindly, don't say it here.

In addition to this, know that we get posts from all over the world. Sometimes it's people who live in a village, 500km from any formal vet care. Often it's a minor who cannot make a unilateral decision for the cat in question. Be compassionate! Bullying them won't help the cat.

2. NO SOAPBOXING OR OFF-TOPIC DEBATE

(Definition of 'SOAPBOXING' here.) Yes, letting your cats outdoors isn't great for the environment. But this isn’t a debate club, and PLENTY of things harm the environment besides cats. People come here from all over the world, with different cultures around how cats are cared for. People come here about strays. No preaching!! Take your cat care bible elsewhere! Either give OP helpful advice about their issue or move along.

Don’t derail threads with politics, don’t pick fights across multiple comments, and definitely don’t start fights with the mod team. We don’t get paid enough.

3. VET FIRST, REDDIT SECOND

If your cat is injured, bleeding, gasping, or pooping blood—call a vet.
Reddit is great for guidance, second opinions, and shared experience. It is not a substitute for veterinary care.
If you haven't called a vet yet, our advice might be limited.
Can’t afford one? Look into:
• Payment plans or CareCredit
• Local rescues and shelters for assistance
• Low-cost clinics in your area

Still post if you need to—but know that our first advice will probably be: call your vet.

Additional note to commenters: no 'Vet. Now.' comments will be allowed without context. If you think they need immediate care, explain why. Otherwise it's just creating panic and those comments will be removed.

4. NO FUNDRAISERS

Sorry, but GoFundMes, Venmos, PayPals, and “please help save Coco” links are not allowed, even in comments. Too many scams, and too hard to moderate. Try subs like r/Assistance or r/GoFundMe instead.

5. NO BULLYING POOR PEOPLE

We get it. Vet care is expensive. It's frustrating to see cats suffering. But complaining about people who can’t afford a vet is not allowed. Full stop.
Suggest rehoming? Fine. But if you’re here to shame people for being broke, please find another sub.

If someone is struggling financially, ER visits are not really something they can just save up for, nor is it realistic to expect them to just get rid of their pets they have emotionally attachments to. All we can hope for is people really think long and hard about how a pet will fit into their finances before they decide to adopt or take in an animal from street. You simply can’t help them all, there are too many cats for that.

6. TAG YOUR GORE NSFW

Bloody wound? Surgery pics? Graphic medical stuff? Weird rash? GAPING FUCKING WOUND?! Mark it NSFW.
That includes genitalia (gender ID posts) and poop/vom. You know who you are.

7. ON-TOPIC POSTS ONLY

This is not r/aww or r/cats. This is r/CATHELP. We are here for:

  • Requesting anecdotal experience with medical issues •
  • Behavior issues
  • General advice
  • First-time cat owner questions (yes, 'noob' questions are welcome!)

That means:

  • No “What should I name my cat?”
  • No “Look at my cat in a hat!”
  • No memes, no fluff.

Posts that don’t have a clear help-related question will be removed.

8. NO BREED QUESTIONS

Unless your cat came with pedigree paperwork from a breeder, they’re a domestic short/medium/long hair. That’s it.
We don't do breed speculation. Why? Because it’s almost always wrong, and it clogs up the sub.
Want to know more? Here's a guide to fur patterns, and here's a general answer to 'what breed is my cat'

9. NO SHITPOSTING, NO KARMA FARMING

If your post is clearly made up, AI-generated, or you’re just farming karma with a low-effort fake, we will yeet it. And probably you, too.

10. NO BRIGADING

If you don’t like someone’s post, do not go hunt them down on other subreddits to insult them. It’s petty, it’s bannable, and Reddit takes it seriously.

11. NO PET SALES OR BREEDING

We do not support the cat trade or backyard breeders. Period.
Don’t try to sell or give away pets here. Don’t ask about breeding. Don’t promote purebred aesthetics. Shelter cats are just as cute.

BONUS REMINDERS

• If your posts or comments are disappearing, check your karma. If it's low, Automod probably ate it. Message us for manual approval.
• If you see rule-breaking behavior, REPORT IT. Automod can’t catch everything.
• If you’re confused or unsure, check the [wiki] or send us a modmail.
• Read the stickied comment on your post. It’s there for a reason.

TL;DR: Help cats. Be nice. No scams. No BS. Read the rules.
Now go pet your cat. They probably knocked something off the counter while you were reading this.

Appearance wondering how completely indoor 4 year old male neutered cat died suddenly

Post image
632 Upvotes

don’t know if it would help at all. but we can’t afford a necropsy. ($1,300 at our vet)

we were out of town and our roommate called to let us know she found our cat dead when she came home from work.

fine in the morning, dead by 1pm.

throughout his life, he did deal w upper respiratory issues, and did just finish a round of Clavamox a couple days ago.

the picture that was sent to us shows black on the inside of his mouth and his hind legs wet from what seems like licking. and when he was moved, there was a lot of saliva coming from his mouth.

(photo here, NSFW, please use care https://photos.app.goo.gl/zBDGDyZPJgRfBwgM8 )

no medications, ointments, or flowers that he would have been able to access.

but he is indoor ONLY and we DO NOT use rat poison or any kind of poison around the house.

we loved him so much. this sucks so much

6month old kitten we had for a week and a half and our 3 year old cat is doing this. I’m concerned if this is bullying or play. (Both male both neutered)

Kitten Help Help! My 3-month-old kitten has unexplained drooling and lethargy.

Thumbnail gallery
450 Upvotes

My 3-month-old kitten, has been experiencing recurring episodes of excessive drooling, lethargy and refusing food for the past three weeks.
Strangely, he’s completely normal between episodes — playful, active and eating well.
We’ve visited multiple vets, had blood tests done, and tried antibiotics, deworming and anti-nausea medication, but nothing has resolved it. One vet with 30 years of experience said she’d never seen symptoms like his.
Has anyone experienced anything similar? What was the diagnosis? We’re desperate for answers and just want our little boy to get better. ❤️🐾

General Advice Timeline of My Cat’s Final Illness: What Could We Have Done Differently to Save Her?

Thumbnail gallery
547 Upvotes

Our 8-year-old cat, Momo, passed away on October 9, 2026. I’m sharing her medical timeline to understand whether there were opportunities for earlier diagnosis or treatment that might have changed the outcome.

** Friday, October 2 • Started vomiting 5–6 times and developed diarrhea. • She had a history of diarrhea while receiving oral steroids for asthma since Jun. 2026, so we initially suspected a medication-related problem.

**Monday, October 5 • Stopped eating and was taken to urgent care. • Temperature was 104°F. • Bloodwork showed low albumin (2.7) and high globulin (6.0). Fecal testing and feline pancreatic lipase were normal. • Received subcutaneous fluids, anti-nausea medication (maropitant), vitamin B12, and Convenia (antibiotic injection). Mirtazapine was prescribed to stimulate appetite. • Her oral steroid treatment was discontinued in favor of inhaled fluticasone.

**Tuesday, October 6 • Developed multiple mouth lesions that appeared to be spreading. • Drooling and nausea worsened, and she remained unwilling to eat.

**Wednesday, October 7: Emergency hospitalization • Presented with a temperature of 106°F, severe drooling with blood-tinged saliva, multiple ulcers on her tongue and lips, and unequal pupils (anisocoria). • Bloodwork showed anemia, inflammatory changes, and low platelets, although platelet clumping complicated interpretation. Her albumin/globulin ratio was approximately 0.5. • Initial ultrasound screening (POCUS) showed no obvious abdominal or chest fluid. • Hospitalized for IV fluids, IV antibiotics (Unasyn), anti-nausea medications, antiviral treatment for suspected herpesvirus, pain management, and supportive care. • A nasogastric (NG) tube was placed because she could not eat.

**Thursday, October 8: Suspected FIP • Her fever temporarily improved but later returned. She remained unable to eat because of painful oral ulcers. • Eye examinations revealed right-sided uveitis and corneal changes. The ophthalmology consultation raised strong concern for dry-form FIP, with concern that neurological involvement might develop. • FIV testing was positive, although she had tested negative in 2019. • Treatment with GS-441524, an antiviral used for FIP, was started. Prednisolone acetate eye drops, pain medication, antibiotics, famciclovir, IV fluids, and NG tube feeding were continued. • Her prognosis was considered guarded. An esophagostomy feeding tube and transfer to a specialty hospital were discussed.

**Friday, October 9: Continued deterioration • She remained unable to eat independently, with persistent painful mouth ulcers and drooling. • Her fever returned, her eye abnormalities persisted, and her vision appeared potentially impaired. • A gallop heart rhythm developed overnight.

• We transferred her to another ER that could plant an E-tube to assist with her feeding in the afternoon. • Her PCR panel confirmed FIV and feline calicivirus, and the vets were highly suspicious of aplastic anemia, and her condition was not suitable for a surgery under sedation. Given how much pain she was in and how poor her prognosis was, they gently advised us to let her go.

Momo ultimately passed away later that day.

I'm struggling to understand how a seemingly healthy indoor cat deteriorated so dramatically in just a few days, and how she suddenly becomes FIV positive. I also keep wondering whether the outcome could have been different if we had acted sooner or pursued different treatments.

For those with veterinary experience or who have been through something similar:

  1. At what point, if any, might earlier intervention have changed the outcome? I noticed since Jul. 2026, a very small wound on her nose had never healed.

  2. Could the steroids for her asthma have contributed to her condition or worsened an underlying infection? Her asthma started in May. 2025, and we started her steroid treatment in Jun. 2026, completed 22x prednisolone and switched to dexamethasone (completed 10x then another 9x since her asthma was not suppressed), plus fluticasone. However, she would have diarrhea each time she took the pill (even 1/4 of the pill every two days).

  3. Was there anything else we could realistically have tried to save her, or was her condition likely already beyond recovery by the time the severe symptoms appeared?

I'm not looking to blame anyone. I genuinely want to understand what happened and whether there was a window when we might have saved her.

Behavioral Issue is my car stupid? animation to save her dignity

Post image
2.1k Upvotes

Shes a 3yo recently retired barn cat now indoor-only cat, visited her/known her since 3-4weeks. She was used to pretty much just relieving herself on the floor in a corner, sometimes burying it with hay and sometimes not. shes learned the tray is for excrements, its just the aim...

Obviously i dont think shes actually stupid, shes my baby, but why isnt she pooping in the hole she digs 💔

Her stool is always healthy as well as her urine so its more just a little inconvenient because the smell isnt covered and also next time she steps into the litter and goes to pee, she hits the poo while buying the pee, and its not like her paws get covered in it and she just shakes the excess litter off and cleans herself but how can i help her "aim better"? Shes generally good at reading me and learning, but i have no idea how to correct her at this lol

I empty the tray 1-2times/day, idk

i dont think country and vet appointment status is necessary info for this. I am not a minor.

Tldr cat doesnt position herself properly when pooping so she struggles to bury it properly afterward

Edit: thank you all for sharing tips and stories about your own silly goobers!! https://imgur.com/a/iqcKutB this is her current littertray and i'll look into finding a bigger one which hopefully will solve it:') and thank you for loving the animation

General Advice Play-fighting, real fighting or bullying?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I can't tell if I am being overly protective and these two are play-fighting or if my black male cat is bullying/attacking my ginger female cat.

The black cat has been neutered, the ginger cat is not yet spayed. They are both still kittens, he is around 4 months old and she is around 3 months old.

If this is not play fighting, what would some suggestions be to stop him from doing this?

Cats are 3 and 2 both fixed.
My boys have always played rough, but it seems to have gotten more intense and aggressive since my old lady cat passed. I don’t interfere unless they start biting hard by the bum because I had a cat get a major infection from a rumpus bite.

Ignore the mess please, I’m unwell.

Kitten Help Cat lethargic and sleepy after her 2nd dose of dewormer pill

Thumbnail gallery
58 Upvotes

Hi everyone. My tabby kitten is around 2 months old, and 5 days ago she got her first dewormer pill.

After 2 days, she pooped a lot and got rid of most of the worms, of which she even threw one yellow up.

We brought her to the vet(in Bosnia), told him that she threw it up, and he said it’s best to give her one more pill so we make sure we kill those bastards, so he gave her one more this morning.

It’s 22:00 now, and for the whole day she only ate a little, had a little water BUT IS SLEEPY AND TIRED AF.

I’m super worried why she’s sleeping so much and wants to be close to me the whole time. Please help

Injury Is He Swollen Or Buff?

Thumbnail gallery
14 Upvotes

Because I can't tell if he's injured or not, I have chosen this flair. I'll change it if needed.

I can't tell if he's swollen or muscular. Both his arms look the same and he's a pretty active indoor/outdoor cat, although I've never noticed his arms being so big. I don't want to take him to a vet if it's just normal muscle (and I don't have that much money right now). He's un-neutered (not/intact) and has a lot of land to explore, often going off for days at a time in the summer and he's around 4 or 5 years old. If I touch or press on his arms he doesn't seem to mind but they are a bit squishy for muscle.

Breathing Issues why is my cat doing this? is this a medical emergency?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

why cat is breathing weird. he doesn’t usually breathe like this, he seems to be puffing out his whiskers when he purrs. this only lasted about 2-4 minutes with no other signs of breathing or medical/behavioral issues.

he usually does the little chirping bird sounds when he sees a bug or a bird when he’s play hunting, and this sounds a little bit like that. however, this time around he’s just laying in bed staring at the wall and making these weird noises.

i don’t wanna jump the gun and convince myself he’s having a medical episode, but i also want to err on the side of caution and make sure everything’s ok.

it could very well be the sign of an incredibly relaxed cat who’s too lazy to purr properly, or it could be something more serious.

i’ll definitely take him to the vet in the coming days, but if anyone has seen this before, let me know if this is something i should take him to the vet for ASAP.

Kitten Help Advice on 1.5 week old litter of kittens

Thumbnail gallery
32 Upvotes

Hi all! I adopted a pregnant cat about a month ago as her previous owner abandoned her when he found out she was pregnant. She had her kittens on October 2nd, and while I’ve raised multiple cats this is my first litter. When is best to get them in for their first shots and such? Mama cat had fleas when I first got her, she was flea treated and doesn’t seem to have passed it along to the kittens, however shortly before birth I noticed she had tapeworms and I gave her dewormer. The kittens have been gaining weight steadily and officially doubled in size yesterday, so i don’t think they got worms from mom but i would like to give them dewormer when they’re old enough just in case. They’re currently 277g, 267g, and 255g respectively. Pics from birth up until today :) their eyes are just starting to open too!

Kitten Help Has anyone seen these strange lines and bumps on a cat’s skin before?

Thumbnail gallery
958 Upvotes

I adopted a 6-month-old male cat who looks like a Devon Rex. When I got him, he had a long vertical line on his belly that looked like an old healing scratch, plus a few smaller similar lines under his armpits and some large pimple-like bumps on his head.

About 3 weeks later, his skin got much worse. He developed:

  • More large bumps/pimples on his head and back
  • A rash across his body
  • More of these strange lines on his belly and under his armpits
  • The original long line on his belly split into two and became dry

I took him to the vet. His bloodwork was normal, but skin testing found ringworm in some areas and a bacterial infection in others.

He was prescribed:

  • Oral antifungal medication
  • Medicated shampoo
  • Antibiotics for 1 week
  • Allergy medication because the vet suspects the rash may be allergy-related

He has been on the allergy medication for 2 weeks. The rash has improved, but the lines aren’t getting better, the large bumps on his head are still there, and new random pimples keep appearing on his back.

He’s now on his second round of oral antifungal medication (1 week on, 1 week off, then another round).

The vets I’ve seen aren’t sure what the lines are and think they may be related to allergies.

Has anyone seen lines like this on a cat before? Any idea what they could be or what I should ask my vet to check next? thank you in advance <3

Behavioral Issue my cat will not stop staring behind the litter box

Thumbnail gallery
9 Upvotes

that’s pretty much it she will not stop obsessing over looking there i just don’t get it. her box is clean 100% there is some litter behind the box but she kicks it out daily so that’s not new at all and shes never cared abt it before. she looks like she’s making the same face and posture as when she sees a bug or something. normally if it was a bug she would just stare and not hit or anything but I LOOKED and there’s nothing there everytime! she’s been doing this for a couple weeks now tbh but i just noticed it as a habit not too long ago.

in this pic u can see i even moved the box to let her go behind it and she just stares.

she’s 12/13, i have a vet tech chat-line that comes with my pet insurance. i could take her to the vet if needed (in USA) but she gets really stressed and i don’t like taking her unless it’s 100% necessary. her last appt was a dental cleaning earlier this year so she is super anxious around things that sound like carriers now. took a while to let me hold her again ):

Eye Issues Kitten left eye reddish

Post image
9 Upvotes

Today I noticed our normal blue eyed ragdoll (7 months) left eye has been red. Also indoor cat to be noted.

She plays hard with our other cat so not sure if she got scratched or not, but I do not see a noticeable injury. There is no discharge or wateriness, she seems otherwise fine not lethargic.

Anyone encounter this before? I plan on taking her to the vet in the morning.

Breathing Issues Not sure what the problem is

Thumbnail gallery
4 Upvotes

Last month, I brought my girl (5yr old) in to the vet and she got diagnosed with mild bronchitis and Calicivirus.

Had to go back and forth into the vet for it like first getting her azythromycin and the xray, then my second vet recommended prednisolone about a week ago.

She looks better some days, but other days, she looks like she's heaving. I swap to shredded paper for litter but she doesn't want to use it. I bought unscented tofu and she's breathing even heavier than before. I clean the room obsessively. I check her every 30min-3 hrs. I turn on the AC to 24-25c since the Philippines is humid and hot. I spent 80% of my income to get her medicine and tests.

4-5 days ago, I fucking fucked up with her prednisolone dose and gave it to her too quickly. She coughed hard. I watched her like a hawk but she didn't seem in distress.

On her good days, she doesn't look like she's sick. She's playing, swatting, eating. Not breathing hard. When she does breath a little more visibly, she'd cough and then her breathing would return smooth again.

On the worse days (other than the fuck up dose) where she's straight up stomach breathing, I rush her to the vet every time and she's fine. She's breathing a little quick, but she's not heaving anymore.

Today was one of those days. She didn't eat her morning kibble (she ate last night). She was gasping for air. So I run to the vet again. She hates car rides, so she hyperventilated and panted for like 5s. Did another xray. No fluid, no enlarged heart, and her bronchitis is improving.

What am I doing wrong? I feel like I'm on a thread lately. Is she OK?? What should I do? What could it be?? I'm still at the vet, and they just cleared her to get back home.

Eye Issues Cat eye spot

My cat has always had a spot in his eye. When we initially got him vet said freckle or birth mark. He is now 7 and it seems like the spot has grown a lot. The first Pic is 2023 and the second is today..I am going to make a vet visit but wanted to ask for opinions here too.
