Housing Help Us avoid eviction
Hello, I am Leah, and I live with my adult son, my adult daughter who is legally blind in one eye, my teenage son, and our dog.
My adult son and I are both employed.
We fell behind on rent of our apartment and had been paying every two weeks, rent and some towards the late fees and missed payment for a while. This was accepted by the landlord. Until the electricity rates went through the roof and I had to chose electricity or half the rent.
I was served an eviction notice, and I have until noon on 10/16/26 to either pay and stay, or get out.
I met with legal aid, I have contacted all of the places in this city possible, reached out to 211 and contacted those places, I have posted and shared my GFM.
One assistance place opens back up on 10/13 and will take 45 cases, but they didn't say if there was a set amount per case. I will call them. Another place might pay $1000. if I can get the balance down to that amount. I will meet with them on Tuesday (only open on Tuesdays and Thursdays).
One pastor of a food bank paid a whole month rent to the landlord on Wednesday, which has helped a lot. That food bank doesn't normally assist financially, but I have been there off and on over the past 10 years, so I am a familiar face. I only asked him for advice.
Legal aid advised me to not hand over cash until I have the entire amount required, because I might need those funds to move. Moving seems like a monumental task on such short notice.
My son might not be able to get any days off to move due to being short handed at work, and I don't want him to get fired.
I am in my 60s and have scoliosis with arthritis all up and down my back, so there is no way my teenager and I would be able to move our stuff from the 2nd floor to a truck. I am the oldest living member of my family, there are no aunts, uncles or cousins, and no one knows where my ex husband is. No, he is not paying child support.
I thank you for taking the time to look at my post. Any ideas, advice, connections, or assistance would be appreciated.
(When my son took my pictures for this post, I had put the wrong date on the paper. After I got back from doing the laundry, he told me, so we retook a photo. That's why the 10 is crossed out with "oops" on it.)
