It might work in some place where you are forced to spend time together, like a military unit, or in prison, or in a pirate crew.

Yeah prisoners famously love people that publicly declare all the shit they getting up to.

He's not making friends, but rather looking for his own place within a group. They are laughing, but only if he excludes them from his stories. It makes people wishing to be on good terms with and looking up to him as speaker of truth/influencer.

They saved dude's life during the s2 finale, they possibly saved his penis too if I remember correctly. John is basically the captain of the ship idc if things change with the arrival of Woodes Rogers (I am on s3e2). These ppl ARE his friends for now

Unfortunately, maybe. Some people do like to tear others down. But maybe the people who like to tear others down aren't the kind of people you want to be friends with.

Think of it like the class clown who makes jokes about others in school, they might get a lot of attention but no one truly likes and knows them as a person. Gossipers also donât fare so well.
In a modern world where people have lots of options on how to relate and connect to other people, choosing someone who is basically an entertainer at the expense of others as a true friend isnât a good option. No one would trust them and they would say too much about people and hurt them.
To use an example from about 10-15 years ago, there used to be these âcity confidentialâ or âHigh School Secretsâ pages on Facebook and Twitter â an anonymous person would run the page and get people to send them information about people in the town or school or post gossip themselves. These people running these things would feel surface level connection as they would get lots of messages and notifications of people using their site. They all invariably turned extremely hurtful though, hardly anyone who uses the lives of others as entertainment would know when it goes too far. No one looks to a person like that to be their true friend.
In case you were really wondering if the Solomon little method could work! Not in the real world friend. Yes, bored or insecure people have an affinity for tearing down others to make themselves feel better (see Reddit snark pages) but the joy in that would be short lived. Itâs not a true human connection

I always thought the best way to avoid spoilers on a series hub is to not be part of it before i finish it

light ribbing among guys CAN get you friends, but it's a delicate balance. you gotta know your audience. don't try it with women. some can take a joke but most simply can't.

You donât think that maybe with women you should also just know your audience? Women rib each other all the time playfully.
