I'm too early for the comments, but I need somebody to back me up that 'ripe' is definitely 'sweaty/funky'.

One hundred fucking percent. They're just Twitter-brained

I had a Twitter account for years before actually engaging with the platform and there’s a clear shift in social barbarism. I felt like there was never a thread that wasn’t inundated with hate and toxic circle-jerking.

101

u/RoughhouseCamel 7h ago

It’s one of the many spaces of the internet populated by people who feel bad, and want to make something in the world worse to try to make themselves feel better.

37

u/K00ls0x 7h ago

Sadly true. The internet is a blessing that has also contributed to the unraveling of our society.

And don’t get me started on my 5 minutes of casually and naively perusing 4chan 🫩

15

u/BattleStag17 6h ago

All social media encourages toxic discourse to some degree (because more hate = more clicks = more ad revenue), but Twitter is unique in being run by an outright Nazi

That shit trickles down to all the users in one way or another

The real problem is that half the comments on most platforms are teenage autismos pretending that they have any real life experience.

I do not disagree, but I hate hate hate the word ripe as much as I loathe the word moist.

I read too many books as a child and the word was used by villainous characters to describe young and fair maidens and it was just fucking yuck.

My go to is funky for stinky.

Especially when preceded by “smells”. Only way it would read sexual is if the tweet said “looks ripe” or even “is ripe”. But it doesn’t, so these ppl are weird.

19

u/AtlantikSender 6h ago

Not even then, tf are you talking about? Ripe being used to describe a person has always meant funky. Like your armpits being ripe.

The Internet is a stupid place.

7

u/tardisintheparty 7h ago

Shit that's how I use it lol like that is just how the word is used colloquially

1

u/HypocriteHere 5h ago

That's how all English speakers use it, aside from morons.

141

u/pasher5620 8h ago

That’s exactly what it means. Porn addicts turn everything sexual, especially as it comes to brother/sister relationships. It’s honestly incredibly creepy.

28

u/ChugHuns 8h ago

Wait what are they insinuating ripe means?

76

u/pasher5620 8h ago

Think like fruit. They were trying to say this person wanted to bang their brother. As in they are “sexually ripe” which is a phrase that makes me want to puke just typing out.

21

u/MvatolokoS 7h ago

Yeah it's a weird way to clearly fetishize coming of age girls. In reality I imagine the term came from fermentation like an overripe grape that turns to wine from spoilage. I assumed that's why we put emphasis to show it's more than just ripe. It's RIPE!

2

u/No-Cat-9339 6h ago

There's a difference between ripe and overripe. Ripe means "ready" overripe is "past ready, almost spoiled" this is definitely a literacy issue.

5

u/ChugHuns 5h ago

Yea that tracks I guess. As for me and my family we mean stinky/funky lol. My dad would always say I was ripe after practice.

I think it's less that and attention seeking people on Twitter are always looking for an out of pocket viral tweet.

81

u/skynetempire 8h ago

I agree but younger gen love to change words. My biggest one is "crash out". It meant to go to bed in my days. It was even used in movies back in the early 00s as going to sleep.

214

u/EclipseIndustries 8h ago

I remember crash, but not crash out.

That being said, I kinda like the new meaning.

21

u/Hardly_Revelant 8h ago

But back then if someone was crashed out, that meant they’re sleeping

71

u/EclipseIndustries 8h ago

I feel like there's a mixup of passed out and crashed here.

39

u/Wow_u_sure_r_dumb 7h ago

No you would “crash” but not “crash out” and someone would have “crashed” or “crashed out”. But you never heard “crash out” or “crashing out” for sure. At least that’s what I remember in socal from the late 70s to early 00s.

15

u/Fr0sTByTe_369 7h ago

In my experience adding "-out" to it was a modifier. One means you're ready for sleep, the other is you've fought off sleep for too long and can't keep fighting.

→ More replies (1)

15

u/skynetempire 8h ago

Its not. It was used in movies too

https://youtu.be/lBlDeSXGN1s?is=HRplMdPIBAv4OHZi

Crashed out, going to crash, crashing out etc all meant to sleep, was sleeping etc.

12

u/EclipseIndustries 7h ago

Just did some research...

Crashed out was kinda more related to partying/alcohol/drugs. Which explains completely why I never heard it back then, I was a kid. Also explains the context of the movie clip you shared.

7

u/poorexcuses 8h ago

It's just a different use of the term

36

u/krunamey 8h ago

I’ve always heard it as just crash. “Can I crash at your place?” “Man I’m about to crash” “so and so is crashing on my couch right now”

11

u/skynetempire 8h ago

Exactly. I was at a friend's house, hit son comes in saying school was hard and worried about this test then he said he was going to crash out.

We all said OK good night get some rest then. He looked at his dad(my buddy) was like wtf, you dont care. Haha

9

u/RoughhouseCamel 7h ago

I like the new meaning of “crash out”- having a total meltdown. But not the new, watered down meaning- being mildly bothered by something. Kinda like I enjoyed GOAT as recently as the late 2010s, before there were 50 GOATs for every subject, and something is “goated” once it’s at least a little better than alright.

63

u/Orion-the-mediocre 8h ago

Crash means go to bed, crash out means to throw a fit

32

u/skynetempire 8h ago edited 8h ago

It didnt in the 90s.

Sorry bro, I crashed out last night after the party

I would go but im going to crash out right now.

Also you could use crash as a word to go to sleep.

Oh ive been studying all night im going to crash soon

It was used in movies as well.

https://youtu.be/lBlDeSXGN1s?is=SqMBY8OSp7_7D36w

Beginning of scene he said he was crashed out.

Movie a man apart

Word meaning changes through time.

8

u/HighlyOffensive10 8h ago

It's funny how they all work for both definitions of the word.

4

u/skynetempire 8h ago

It is lol. But for me, the same conversation I figured you were went to sleep vs having a break down.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/Foofity 8h ago

That’s a newer use. They are correct about the original intention.

4

u/MelatoninJunkie 7h ago

See I was under the impression that crash out was losing it to a point where permanent damage was done ie, relationships altered, going to jail etc.  but now it’s used as “im upset at this inconvenience”

3

u/captainshockazoid 7h ago

theres a reverse thing going on for me, im really skeeved by 'sliming out' recently, which i guess means to kill someone now? but to me thats an explicit (and kinda clunky) sexual term so i cringe when i see someone say it.

2

u/fusionlantern 6h ago

Not a young gen situation looking ripe and smelling ripe means 2 different things

2

u/SpikeRosered 4h ago

It's such a waste of slang because it's functionally identical to "freak out".

10

My mom once told me "I'm counting on you to tell me if I start smelling ripe," so yes, it's 100% a word for "smells like shit/BO."

8

u/Jsoledout ☑️ 8h ago

Yep

5

u/TowerNecessary7246 8h ago

Very common for my folks to use it in that context. Seems like it might be dying out but was certainly common during my 80s/90s childhood. I'm a white guy if that matters.

7

u/investigatorbae 8h ago

Never considered any other interpretation

6

u/Orion-the-mediocre 8h ago

Yeah, when used for a smell, ripe means NASTY

5

u/Oswaldofuss6 ☑️ 8h ago

Absolutely.

6

u/Blueberry_Rabbit 8h ago

I too am confused why others are confused! 😅

7

u/royalenocheese 6h ago

Ripe was nicer than musty.

6

u/Ill_Buffalo3887 7h ago

Yes. Old dude here. Young men who hit puberty have a special kind of stink. Consider the child in charge of cleaning themselves but hasn't learned to bath properly. An unholy stench that leads many elders to yell ....

I dont care what you do! Just go OUTSIDE!

That stank. That three day old foot/armit/swamp butt smell is unique and best described as RIPE.

I know. I was that kid told to go outside.

5

u/MagicCarpetofSteel 6h ago

The only time I’ve seen “ripe” be used for something smelling good is in relation to fruit: the smell of ripe peaches, for example.

I sometimes trip myself up because of that (I associate “ripe” with “ripe fruit/fruit that is at optimal ripeness,” which obviously smells good), but that’s a skill issue on my part.

Basically, you’re dead on, if someone or something (that’s not fresh fruit) smells ripe, it smells bad, and is usually a strong smell too.

5

u/PowerRainbows 8h ago

It is and always will be for me at least

4

u/Visual_Feelings 7h ago

When someone says “they’re ripe” it’s has always meant that they stank.

4

u/I_DRINK_GENOCIDE_CUM 7h ago

It's got a certain twang to it imo. Like it's an inverse stank to musty.

But that absolutely could just be me

3

u/Pimpwerx ☑️ 8h ago

It is. Old saying, but still fairly common.

3

u/classphoto92 8h ago

Exactly. It's pronounced (rye-eep). People have lost their goddamn minds.

3

u/Head-Ad9893 8h ago

3

u/Seizure_Storm 8h ago

3

u/GardenStateKing ☑️ 8h ago

1000%

3

u/OldKentRoad29 8h ago

That's what it is.

3

u/redwoods81 7h ago

Yes like ripe cheese smells funky

3

u/SpotFit2996 7h ago

Yes, it even carries the same meaning in other English based creole languages. I remember my grandma using the krio word for ripe (rɛp) to tell me that I stink and need to go shower.

2

u/terroristteddy 7h ago

Correct, I've heard it used that way by folks of all ilks. Although generally a little older, like Gen X types.

2

u/everynamecombined 6h ago

Yes. I think only the sickest minds would tell on themselves to think the world is often talking about sex when they speak of the word.

2

u/HatefulDan 5h ago

Yep. But why are y’all still playing around on twitter. That’s the real question

2

u/Y_Are_U_Like_This 4h ago

You are correct, but old dudes been calling young girls "ripe" since the 2000s when I was in middle school. They weren't talking about smells

2

u/Aaaandiiii ☑️ 4h ago

It's definitely the nicest way you can tell someone they stink. But if you have that told to you... Yeah, you gonna feel bad for a while.

615

u/kingxanadu 8h ago

They're throwing around words like that but don't know what ripe means in that context?

179

u/Cultural-Loan86 8h ago

It means “you stink” but more from hormones than just dirt.

163

u/CaptFerdinand 8h ago

Hormones? It’s BO!

70

u/AbyssalSolace 7h ago

Hormones are a major cause of BO.

41

u/CaptFerdinand 7h ago

Yeah you know what else causes it? Not using soap and deodorant. We can blame hormones for almost anything in our body, but we don’t.

No one has ever said I can smell you because of your hormones. Yall need to start acting normal, this is exactly how we got to saying someone smells ripe and everyone’s like “that’s sexual”.

30

u/SpiderRadio 7h ago

... Sometimes it's the soap and deodorant mixing with your own chemistry, and it just doesn't sit well. I can't use certain perfumes because my own body creates a better mix with different types. Sometimes it's using the wrong soap and deodorant.

Obviously I understood what you meant, just dropping full info for the uninformed that may read further.

20

u/PalatwinkusVT 6h ago

Soap is the solution, hormones is the cause. Science isn't weird unless you make it weird. And yes, stinking from being out in the dirt all day definitely smells different from stinking because it's been 3 days since your last shower.

→ More replies (10)

6

u/Clw89pitt ☑️ 5h ago

Brother, it's the fucking hormones that open up your apocrine glands to cause the sweat that antiperspirant combats or deodorant masks.

That's why young kids don't sweat and smell as much and don't need deodorant - they don't have the requisite hormone levels to open the apocrine floodgates.

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (1)

27

u/Bunnnnii ☑️ Meme Thief 7h ago

It’s pretty common knowledge that kids going through puberty are more prone to smelling because of several changes their bodies are going through. Hormones are part of that.

I don’t know if this person’s brother falls in that bracket, but that’s my assumption.

12

u/OpheliaRainGalaxy 7h ago

That day when ya go to hug your sweet little boy and end up saying "whew, you need a shower!" Then ya notice that's not a dirt smudge on his upper lip and realize he should probably have a chat with his father soon.

After my boys grew up and moved out, I had to wash down the walls of their room three times to get that puberty stank off.

49

u/masterfulnoname 8h ago

Ok. Good to know. Glad I saw this before searching.

27

u/DetectiveClownMD ☑️ 7h ago

This whole generation gotta start over. I aint googling that shit, bless, but the fact a term in that category of vile shit is a normal KNOWN WORD! Is nuts!

13

u/PalatwinkusVT 6h ago

It's because it's typically referring to female adult on male child pedophilia. Men aren't taken as seriously as victims, so it gets memed a lot.

3

u/shykidknit 4h ago

There's a term for little girls too tho and I've definitely heard that used before as well, something along the terms of the book lolita, so it's not just little boys...

6

u/StolenPies 6h ago

It's Japanese, so that explains everything you need to know. It's legal there (and, unfortunately, here) because it's animated.

3

u/yourlocaltouya 8h ago

FYI, CP entails real children only. It's generally frowned upon to use that term for something that did not come out of somebody's personal horrors.

60

u/lastaccountgotlocked 8h ago

Yo, if you're going to be precise, you should call it abuse, not porn.

44

u/Jacktheriipper 8h ago

Yah the proper term is csam or something like that now

13

u/Dudewhocares3 8h ago

If it depicts children in a sexual manner it is child porn.

If you disagree, share your interest with your friends and family and see how quickly people cut contact with you

20

u/paranormalpvnk 7h ago

I have no interest in this content, but according to the agencies that use the terms, it does not apply to fictional content (not including content that depicts a real person, ex. a comic drawn of a real child) and using it for such actually makes it more difficult to identify and take down real csam.

Using correct terminology isn't a defense of uncomfortable or borderline illegal content, it protects very real victims from the watering down of what happened to them and ensures government entities receiving reports aren't wasting time on content they can do little about.

It is also not illegal as these laws do not apply to art, so sending links to them does unfortunately clog up avenues for reporting.

6

u/Dudewhocares3 7h ago

It’s not illegal yes.

Just like 100 years ago marital rape wasn’t federally illegal until 1993.

“It’s not illegal” is an excuse for the failure of the justice system

13

u/paranormalpvnk 6h ago

So, again, my point isn't justifying it, my point is that using incorrect terms makes actually doing anything about stuff more difficult. Getting reports for something that isn't illegal doesn't get it taken down, it means the csam of irl victims takes longer to be reviewed.

I am not defending this content. I do not like this content. However, the reality is that (at least in America,) using a term that does not apply to it and/or reporting it under that classification has only negative effects especially for real life victims, who I think should get priority over questionable depictions.

Ripe is not the most popular word to describe someone smelling bad, but it's not really that obscure. Some children were definitely left behind

In my experience, boofing meaning shoving drugs up the butt is a white people slang term lol.

In my city, boof meant a strong smell. Like weed that has a strong smell was "boofin" or "boof pack" but a person who was boofin had bad BO.

I learned the white people definition of "boofing" when I went off to college at a PWI. Not only did I learn the definition, I witnessed the practice in action irl 😭

10

u/Thej-nasty 7h ago

Bro you must have a way of making people feel very comfortable around you otherwise how in the hell does this even happen?

9

I did a lot of drugs in my late teenage years and early 20s lmao. I was just around a lot of people with substance abuse problems because I had substance abuse problems. I was eating xans and oxy like candy and sipping the most overpriced lean ever but I wasn't shoving any of it up my butt 🤣

17

u/Ok_Potato_9554 8h ago

I've only known boofin to be a word for putting stuff in your butt, usually drugs.

4

u/lukenog 8h ago

That's how white people use the word in my experience haha. I learned that definition when I went off to college at a PWI. Growing up in DC tho I went to like 90% Black schools and boof meant a strong smell, for either a person or weed.

I'm not Black or white tho, I'm just a Latino dude who grew up as a minority in a majority Black environment so I'm on the sidelines for both white people and Black people slang lmao

I’d also say; rank, foul, pungent … musty lol

4

Rank would be more apt as a synonym for stinky imo. Ripe gives me an image of fresh or appealing, like a fruit.

2

Ripe is a specific kind of funk. "Its kinda ripe in here, you should open a window" was what id hear as a 10-12 year old after my buddies and I had spent the last hour or two pretending to be wcw/nwo stars in my bedroom or gamed for 4 hours straight. Its like....as thick and potent as its going to get before stale or rotten becomes the more accurate description.

I'm for sex positivity and all that, but the 24/7 gooner culture people can be so tiring.

4

u/shykidknit 4h ago

This wouldn't be a s*x positivity moment tho, because those people are implying the guy is a PDF interested incestually in his minor aged brother when he's really just saying he stinks...

u/rawbface 8h ago

Wth smelling "ripe" is supposed to be a good thing now?

95

u/HearMeOutMa 8h ago edited 8h ago

In the most generous way to interpret the dumbasses, "ripe" is often a gross way to describe someone, especially women/girls, as young and in their sexual prime. They're crossing the streams of the colloquial usage of the word and coming out looking dumb and porn-brained.

35

u/Status-Custard-3145 8h ago

To be wayyyy more fair than is warranted. You say a fruit is ripe when it's ready to be eaten. So if you only knew the word from that context, it could be possible.

15

u/rawbface 8h ago

It's overripe. The rancid rotten fruit that fell from the tree and left a fermenting stinkpile.

6

u/sengoro 8h ago

Yeah, The "as fuck" in @ nujagoatt's sentence is meant to imply the subject is overripe

8

u/MyCumCumCummiesYum 8h ago

Like “ripe for the picking”

“Why does everyone sexualize EVERYTHING nowadays”

I had people jump on my back like I’m bugging. Foh. Niggas are extra weird nowadays. Words are having their meanings changed because they’re used for more sexual contexts now. Every conversation has to have a sexual element brought into it.

(It’s weird to run to the internet to tell everyone your brother stinks, but it’s not weird for the reasons these weirdos are saying).

u/littlemacsmacs 8h ago

The cycle of the lexicon. Black people coin cool word, white people steal it and bastardize, and finally gooners finish to them

73

u/ovoid709 7h ago

I'm a middle aged white guy that grew up on a remote island in a racially homogeneous part of Canada. When I was a kid "ripe" was a nicer way of saying somebody stank. It has been used in that context since the 1700's across the English speaking West.

Edit: Forgot a word.

49

u/AdHom 7h ago

Ripe is very much not an example of this. If anything I would have thought it would fit more into the category of "corny outdated white people sayings"

8

u/starkel91 6h ago

As a mid 30’s corny white person: add in “chaps my ass” when someone starts irritating me lol.

15

u/longboi28 6h ago

My grandparents and parents have been using ripe to describe someone's stink every since I was a tiny kid and I'm white, I don't think this is a good example of what you're talking about

2

A little late I googled and not I swear I have to stay away from the windows

2

u/shykidknit 4h ago

My experience on the internet I just assume not to Google a word that's being used on twitter and some forums lol someone will eventually provide context and some of your innocence will still be in contact

7

u/dcdisco 7h ago

44 yo, ripe has always ment your pits stink.

5

u/TheRightToDream 7h ago

Terminally online folks don't even know what its like to talk to actual people, and that idioms span the lexicon, diasporas, generations. "I dont know if he means what I think he means, I guess I'll call him a pedophile". Dear god pls go outside and touch grasssss

6

u/Sequoia_Vin 6h ago

Ripe is a common word however many people only know ripe for he picking as in something is ready.

Such is the tragedy of life

3

u/gdex86 4h ago

This is just linguistic drift. Over a span of time a word has one meaning for one generation falls out of use and another younger generation attempts to understand it based on the normal use of the word. I understand the use of saying someone smells ripe as a statement bad odor but if I didn't because it had fallen out of use by a generation can get someone hearing that and going "Well a ripe fruit is one that is at the point of maturity that it's ready to be plucked so this might be a sex thing?"

3

u/theothertoken ☑️ 3h ago

Gonna be honest the most recent time I heard ripe to describe someone was Colin Farrell talking about that dude’s girlfriend in that Fright Night remake. With that being said, jumping straight to “irl shotacon” is some of the wildest shit I’ve heard.

2

u/Medium-Science9526 8h ago

The etymology of ripe has changed now?

2

u/z3n777 8h ago

teh internet sees one normal tweet and immediately starts a congressional investigation

2

u/Cultural-Loan86 8h ago

I’ve heard it more in the northeast.

2

u/nomoregoodnamez 8h ago

Ripe, pungent, and rank are my top 3!

2

u/jamesdeniro 8h ago

“Ripe” As in, yo funk has aged to maturity😷

2

u/mquari 8h ago

Okay I was unaware apparently the word ripe to describe something or someone that smells funky is 'unc' terminology??? How do people not know common words? This is not an obscure term 😭 NCLB left MANY behind

2

u/Careless-Balance-893 ☑️ 3h ago

I've only ever heard it used to describe b.o. 🤨🤨🤨🤨🤨🤨
