It was a miracle how it happened

I have so many questions πŸ‘€ Did they do a "random" raffle? Who chose the bursary winner? Who announced the winner? What was the congregation's reaction? And did the parents say that the Lord works in mysterious ways afterwards? πŸ’ Questions, questions!

My first question was, "What the hell is a bursary?".

You are asking too many questions now.

Funny because that word is used a lot here in the UK, whilst varsity seems to rarely be used over here πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ A bursary is pretty much a non-repayable grant to cover your costs, a bit like a scholarship, so I guess they're covering all of their son's varsity costs 🏦 Usually bursaries are awarded based on (low) household income though, so this seems like a rather convenient tax write-off πŸ‘€ I bet the dad was smiling like RFS:

A bursary is like a scholarship, but for being poor instead of smart.

Performative church nonsense.

They could have just not put their son’s name in the hat.

My HS had a pageant that awarded a $2,000 scholarship to the winner. It was managed by one of the teachers and her husband, a county official, always helped make sure it received funding from the county even though the other 4 schools in the county didn't get anything. Her son emceed the event. So it was no surprise to anyone when her daughter became the first sophomore in our school history to win the pageant. No surprise the next year when daughter's best friend won it as a junior. I was gone by year 3 but wouldn't surprise me if they named them co-winners that year.

That sounds like vertical integration from the county to the kid.

I once won a raffle by asking the sponsor how many tickets were sold and buying enough to increase my odds. Since the products were all donated, I figured how I won that big screen smart tv was between me and the Lord.

I won 4 of 9 raffles at my brother in-law's cancer benefit. I put on $200 and only targeted the raffles I won. By the third I was willing to have them shuffle and pull a new winner but was told that would just make it look worse. Turns out most people did 50-100 and just went in for everything meanwhile I was about 1/5 of all the tickets where I entered.
