Other Sheldon helped me with my Autism and OCD
Hello everyone, I wanted to talk about something that’s been on my chest for a while to see if anyone else had any similar experience
I’m a young adult girl and I was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder in high school and am currently in the process of being diagnosed with OCD
Let me preface that when I first heard about the big bang theory I thought it was the dumbest most unfunny thing ever. The creepy guys and sexist characters grossed me out and everyone on the show irritates me. The humor is outdated and I never intended on ever being a fan. Then one day a friend of mine put it on the TV in the background and I was mesmerized. I watched every single episode afterwards glued to the screen, and the reason? Sheldon! Everything he did enthralled me, he was so relatable! He had all of the autistic and ocd traits I had and I loved seeing him interact with other people and his friends because it mirrored me exactly. The good and the bad. I liked that when he did something insensitive he got talked to about it and that his friends held him accountable. I loved all of his weird little habits that I also shared, and I loved that despite his quirks his friends work to accept him anyways.
When I was a kid my mom always told me I’d never be the kind of person that had a lot of friends. Harsh but true. I know people like to baby those with disabilities but being autistic and ocd is hard, and I definitely have made my friends feel bad and hurt them because of my actions. Part of growing pains is learning how to not hurt those around you, and you have to learn to understand a neurotypical person in the same way you want them to understand a neurodivergent person. I might not have a lot of friends, but those I do have are like Sheldon’s. Despite my flaws and strange habits, they love and care for me so much they’ve learned to adapt. And now that young Sheldon has come out I’ve been loving that one even more!!!! It’s like watching a documentary about my life as a kid! (Well I didn’t go to college when I was like 9 but still). The bullying, the lessons about being selfish and mean as a child and learning to be nice to others, and learning how to live with parents and siblings that fit the traditional southern family mold when you’re just so different.
I love BBT and young Sheldon and I’m not saying it’s perfect, but I love that Sheldon gets to be a bad person too. Unlike other shows that kind of do the savant and cute/quirky thing way too much, Sheldon is just kind of a weird eccentric prick. And I LOVE THAT. Because when I was a kid and I didn’t understand social cues or empathy I WAS A PRICK! I wasn’t some cute little manic pixie dream girl with quirky autism I was a dysfunctional and awful kid. But I had so much to love about me as well, just like Sheldon does. And I love that his friends at the end of the day accept him and challenge him to learn and grow as a person by the end of the series.
It’s become such a comfort series for me and I’m so grateful it came out at the time it did because I like that Sheldon gets treated as a regular human. They never mention his autism and it lets them show the actual true reality of how autistic people get treated and treat others in the real world and the drama and amazing things that happen because of it.
Maybe I sound super crazy but that was just my revelation. However Howard is awful and I wish he didn’t exist amen

Character discussion A connection to Sheldon's Nobel speech
in season 3 episode 1 Sheldon says he can't mention his friends in his noble prize acceptance speech but in the series finale he does just that, he makes it all about his friends. I think it shows how much he really did grow because he felt bad because of how he made his friends feel and I doubt he would have in season 3.
it was really a full circle moment.
Thoughts?

Episode discussion "If true, that seems like an awfully large gamble, given that the prize is Leonard" -Sheldon (S4, E16)
Definitely one of my favorite Sheldon quotes by far 😂 this is when Sheldon goes on about how Raj can tell his sister not to date Leonard, based on traditional cultural rules. After Sheldon says the quote in the title, Leonard then looks at Sheldon like, “dude wtf” lol.

Episode discussion Leonard’s book episode
I’ve been watching a lot of Forensic Files recently, and realized that Leonard, and Howard, may have been imitating Peter Thomas (the narrator for Forensic Files) when he’s telling the guys the plot for his book in the cafeteria- “and murder” , “AND MURDER” & “I HEARD YOU. THE FIRST TIME.”

Storyline discussion Geologistss!
heyyy! I'm studying geology, and I find the jokes about geologists funny but I'm curious whether the writers genuinely see geology as the least prestigious science or whether it's just a sitcom thing? Bert is kinda cool right 😞😞. What do other science students think? ik this is a sitcom still sometimes I get offended 😭

Character discussion Claire & Penny
Thought these two would hit it off as friends, given their personalities are so similar.
Think they strategically placed them far away from each other in the episode where they all meet Claire at the pub!

Character discussion Who is cleaning the big apartment?
Random thought has crossed my mind. Do you guys actually think Sheldon is once a week going on a cleaning spree? Touching all that dirty stuff, scraping toilet etc. I have hard time imagining it
Could be they pay cleaning lady but I also dont find it beliveable since Sheldon would probably be uncomfortable with stranger touching his stuff, entering his room etc.
Might be poor Leonard has to(again) take care of everything 😄😄😭

Storyline discussion A missed storyline opportunity
With all of Sheldon (and Bernadette sometimes) mocking Howard for his lack of a PhD they could have made a storyline where Penny and Howard bond over being the only non-doctorates in the group and have some experience leaving the 2 of them together isolated from the rest of the group and where Howard realizes how Penny must often feel around them and she admits to him the only one who makes her feel bad about her lack of formal education is Sheldon. This would have been a great Howard/Penny story.

Character discussion Unpopular opinion I’m sure.
Is Wolowitz really considered an astronaut? When I think of an astronaut, I think of somebody who’s been in the Air Force for years, a pilot, years of college, having to do with space.
I consider Wolowitz an engineer who happened to go up into space. Am I wrong? Would NASA really consume this being an astronaut just because he went up into space and did something?

Character discussion I love Mary Cooper, she had some great lines in the show. Wish she appeared more
Having watched both big bang theory and Young Sheldon (yet to watch Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage) I have to say she was a fun character, not as much in Young Sheldon but in big bang theory, had zinger lines and I always rewatch her appearances, especially her and Leonard's mom scenes.

Character discussion Kate Micucci's book for first readers is in the Mo Willams Gerald and Piggy series of books!
I ran across this today. Having seen some of her Tiktok videos where she paints on various found artifacts, I was knocked out that she is included in this prestigious book series! She played Lucy in the show and was co-author of Howard's anniversary song for Bernadette!
