Ask Me Anything! Marcello Barenghi, Hyper-realism Artist -- AMA!

My name is Marcello Barenghi. I studied Art, I graduated in Architecture.

I tried working as a freelance illustrator but, really, they made me believe that my talent was useless, exploiting me and humbling my work. I was so disappointed and saddened that, at 23 of age and for 20 years, I stopped drawing, taking the best years of my life away from art.

If I hadn't lost my job in 2013, you would probably never have seen my drawings. Unemployed and with nothing to lose, I opened my Youtube channel and I started drawing again, getting a lot of satisfaction. That's why I will never thank you guys enough. You supported me and, drawing after drawing, I grew up, and with me also so many young artists inspired by my work.

Hello Mr. Barenghi, why specifically pursue Hyper-realism, and is this youtube channel your primary source of income or a passion project you started when you lost you job?

Also, forgive the ignorance, but is doing portraits in this style possible/incredibly difficult or is it undoable?

Also also, thank you for doing this AmA, I would not have seen your amazing art otherwise :)

Thank you so much for your questions. My English is not great and I hope my answers are satisfactory :)

For twenty years I didn't draw because hindered by intermediaries, Youtube allowed me to show my work directly to people. It started as a rediscovered passion and for a while it was also the main source of income. Now I also work with companies as an illustrator and some people support me on Patreon, this helps me to be an independent artist. In the future I hope to realize my dream of a permanent art exhibition.

I can not tell you why I chose hyper-realism, it's an aspiration I've had since I was a child. I have always tried to capture as much detail as possible and to solve all the problems I had with the various tools to avoid imperfections. I'm still trying to make the perfect drawing. Meanwhile the imperfections make my drawings recognizable and "mine", so I love them even if I'm never satisfied :)

Making hyper-realistic portraits is not impossible, but my current format on YouTube is more suitable for small still life. I use a small gray paper and I make the drawing in a few hours without taking breaks (all for the benefit of the video). People's portraits are better on white paper and they would need more hours (sometime days) and a larger paper for more details.

Not to mention that amazing things can be done with oil painting. I'm thinking of doing something like that...
