In Ghost Wire Tokyo, if you do all the Tanuki quests you get a Tanuki suit. It doesnt show up in several cutscenes but it does in others and its kinda hilarious. Some bad shit is happening then it snaps to your character in a full raccoon dog outfit reacting.
My office is decorating and dressing up as Mario for Halloween this year. I've been drawing and painting Mario in various costumes for people. I have him in his frog suit and I'm working on his fire outfit. I keep looking at this one (it was my favorite when I was a kid) and trying to decide if I should make him, too. I already have a full plate with everything else I'm doing, and with the occasional actual work I have to do, so I'm not sure if I can. Maybe I'll put my insomnia to work this weekend...
no, you can't say wingspan. That's a sack-span, or trans-scrotal-spread measurement. Maybe someone with a sufficiently prestigious PHD could give us a more scientific term.
Because their scrotum is extremely flexible and durable. It was used to flatten gold leaf because it was one of the few materials flexible enough but also durable enough that was available in Japan. This is why they are also associated with luck, mischieviousness, and other magical properties. Really worth a deep dive.
Wait are you a tanuki? Giving mixed signals here, hammering gold with balls seems harsh, then saying its worth a deep dive... hmm are you a kinky tanuki?
These animals are skinned alive for their fur, which is then sold to other countries and passed off as higher and helps. The fur trade itself is the most brutal and horrible trade.
I remember seeing a PETA video of an old Asian man thrashing one on the ground and then he skinned it while it was still alive. Then the camera pans to a WHOLE pile of them and they are raw meat, trying to crawl away while violently trembling. I was scarred for life. I still see it today and will not wear anything fur trimmed from China, ever. I hope people treat them better now than they did back then in the 1990’s.
I have a ceramic Tanuki in my guest bedroom! It was my favorite thing to see in Japan while I was there. My son’s friend and his wife bought it as a parting gift the night before my departure. The story behind it is hilarious!!
Specially they mean "torpor" where it's like hibernation-lite. Their metabolism slows and they'll sleep for just days or weeks at a time instead of months. But still go out looking for food throughout the winter, especially on warmer winter days. Also when looking it up I found out bats and hummingbirds torpor daily too, to conserve their energy!
If you think these guys are cute please take a stand against the fur trade. They are mass reared in terrible conditions and then skinned alive and tossed into piles to die.
Chinese raccoon dogs were imported to Europe in the 1900s and have spread pretty far as an invasive species. There's plenty of them here in Finland but I've only seen them as roadkill
No, but kind of. "Fox" is a word that's applied to a lot of species that look like foxes, but there's also such a thing as a "true fox".
The Canid family has four tribes / sub-tribes:
Wolves and wolf-like canines: grey wolves, dogs, etc.
South American canines: including the bush dog and maned wolf
Fox-like canines: true foxes, raccoon dogs
Grey foxes
Under the fox-like canines tribe, there is the genus Nyctereutes which includes the raccoon dogs, and the genus Vulpes - the true foxes.
The distinction between a dog and a raccoon dog (tribe level) is basically like humans and gorillas. The distinction between a true fox and a raccoon dog (genus level) is like humans and chimps.
Here's a nice family tree. You'll find the fox-likes in red at the top. Raccoon dogs split from foxes about 8-10 million years ago.
Notice how many "dogs" aren't dogs, and how many "foxes" aren't foxes!
