In 1975 the population of Iceland was 219,262 people. 108,509 of them were woman, so only 2 000 ish less then men. Literally half the country going on strike is crazy.

The women in WYOMING did that to get the vote... I don't know the year but they were the first state to allow women to vote

Le donne del Wyoming ottennero il suffragio universale il 10 dicembre 1869.

Is “azadi” the word for freedom in Icelandic? That’s the word for freedom in Persian.

No, I don’t know why that word is on this post. Frelsi would be the closest, or frí. Icelandic doesn’t use the letter z

I Made a mistake in the original draft.
And reddit doesn't allow changing titles so it's stuck 🤷

I learned that story (and what happened since) by reading https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/a-uterus-is-a-feature-not-a-bug-the-working-woman-s-guide-to-overthrowing-the-patriarchy-sarah-lacy/fb2a6a32a134971b

This is what we should do in the US.

and what would you be protesting for? have you got an ideal, a goal that everyone agress with in the protest?

Does downvoting your question count as an ideal or goal? I don't think people understand the point of doing something like this. It's not a fun girlsnight activity. You need to be trying to achieve something.
Also, men have learnt how to take care of children just fine in the event that the mothers can't or won't. This would not have nearly the same effect it had then. So reconsidering, I take it back: This is a fun girlsnight activity, and you ladies should go ahead and enjoy yourselves. Pair it with a nice chardonnay.

WHERE are America's women?
THAT would be a formidable voting block.

Voting as they normally do because women aren't a monolith hive mind that reddit likes to think they are. no group is.
even then attempts to rally all of them back fired massively like interrupting prime time TV to announce taylor swift was endorsing kamala harris and then spending like a week trying to say it wasn't a psyop.
even then normy perception of reality and reddit perception are vastly different things.

Yayyyyyyyyy for women. Why isn't the U.S. doing this?

Iceland has a smaller population than every state in the US. This would be like half of Vermont doing something and then asking why doesn’t just the entire country do it? Why doesn’t the whole world just do this?

because these women were intrinsic to the running of the country, literally irreplacable at the time. thats why that one was so successful.
unfortunately the country of America has invested a lot of time and resources to make sure everyone is replaceable so i dont know what the solution is for them, however, do they not have similar rights to this right now? so what would they be campaigning for?

Are you for real?

u/LarrySupertramp 1d ago
Are you for real that Iceland doing something in the 1970s is remotely similar to the US?
4
u/Denim_Diva1969 1d ago
Well, what I meant is that US women have a zillion reasons to protest. The lack of power over our own bodies is a big one.

u/LarrySupertramp 1d ago
I agree but I think it’s unfair to Americans to say that we could just do a protest like this and it would have the same outcome. Many states probably have the same legal protections for women as Iceland does which also makes it harder to get it nationwide when it’s not a nationwide problem.

You've BEEN equal in the US so no need! You actually have 1 more right than men have, so be happy! We're not complaining. I hope you don't have to ask me what right that is, because then I know you're not paying attention.

u/Doucevie 1d ago
I'm not American. Women in America get no maternity and/or parental leave for dad.
No, no. If we were equal, women in the U.S. would be able to stand your ground against their abusers.
Men spend significantly less time in prison for killing their partners. An average 2-6 years conviction.
Women who kill their partners get a sentence over 12 years, as an example of inequality.

Maternity or parental leave is not a gender issue. It's just an issue.
Women on average get less years conviction.
After controlling for the arrest offense, criminal history, and other prior characteristics, “men receive 63% longer sentences on average than women do,” and “[w]omen are…twice as likely to avoid incarceration if convicted.”
So just careful with the cherry picking.

Interestingly, Iceland also has the highest rate of female suicide in the world.

This would end up the US military or police forces beating and more the women protesters if anything remotely close to this happened in the US.
