I swear man people don’t understand how much a gaming community cares about one another. My old guild in wow sent me a get well package when I was going through chemotherapy. Games = love

u/_JohnGalt_ 2d ago

Me and some others donated a good chunk to his daughter's GoFundMe for Leukemia. She was 3 at the time, now thriving years later.

Man I am still in a discord with people I was gaming with back in the 2000s. For how sterile internet can be in terms of meeting folk, you can absolute develop relationships with complete strangers if you all share the same hobbies etc and keep in contact

16

u/Interesting_You6852 2d ago

Me too! I have gaming friends that I played with 20 yrs ago and we still talk

28

u/Dry-Moment962 2d ago

It's crazy that we grew up in a time that we weren't supposed to talk to strangers online and decided to make  life long friendships with said strangers instead.

Now, everyone is celebrated with how many strangers they can add to their friends lists and no one has friends.

Life is weird.

13

u/OxfordGate 2d ago

I usually tell those people to check out «The Remarkable Life of Ibelin» on Netflix. That shows a story about gaming community.

4

u/Gloomy_Plastic572 2d ago

oh aye thats a proper tear jerker of a doc about how game Communities look out for one and other

11

u/TacoCircus 2d ago

I had a really good friend in overwatch who killed himself. I used to check in with him all the time before it happened. If we don’t look out for each other, who will?

5

u/potato_analyst 1d ago

Sorry to hear that, bro.

22

u/Kindarelevanttoo 2d ago

It’s cause people don’t realize how often people talk over discord or whatever the other chat options are people use. You can have a group of 5-10 people online for 4+ hours every night, constantly coming in and hanging for however long and then muting to go do something and then they come back for however long when there done.

If they go and start cooking, they often stay in the call and keep talking. Go change a diaper, stay in the call and keep chatting. With a large enough group, you will just about always have 2+ people online minimum, so there’s always a convo going for someone to join in with. And thats not even counting the text chat convos that happen while people are offline.

u/Practice_NO_with_me 1d ago

Siiigh. I need this so bad. I’m going thru the separation process and was painfully aware that he was my only friend even before. I just can’t maintain relationships very well, I just don’t think about other humans unless they are right in front of me. But I still long for community, a meme board, in jokes, validation.   Comfort. Am I not human blah blah blah.  None of the games I play have an online element and i just have a Mac laptop.

2

u/SixdaywarOnSnapchat 1d ago

old wow expansions were so good. god, i look back on those times so fondly. i have never found another game or experience the same. i haven't played in years and still keep in touch with two of my closest rated pvp friends.

1

u/Flight-2012 1d ago

Yeah playing cata probably my peak. I was world ranked for dps. I played so many hours of wow. I’m going to give wow forever a shot.

u/Coder-Dentist 1d ago

Those are typically not the same kind of people. People usually find like minded people. I was in a WoW guild who would do things like send others presents and what not. Those aren't the people playing League telling me they hope I get cancer.

Bro, how did she know where to send the paramedics?

72

u/deathbotly 2d ago

I have the address of some of my international gamer pals, we exchange xmas cards

59

u/ford4prefect2 2d ago

btw, she knew his address, idk why. " When he didn't respond I instantly started to look up the emergency number for the EU,' she told the Liverpool Echo. 'When that didn't work I just had to hope the non-emergency would work, it had an option for talking to a real person... and I can't tell you how quickly I clicked that button." - Daily Mail, Jan 12, 2020

What an unbelievably depressing line.

30

u/Dark_halocraft 2d ago

They could be close friends

11

u/IrishViking22 2d ago

Nah, it says she's 5,000miles away. That's pretty far

3

u/Dark_halocraft 2d ago

I have good online friends

R/woosh

-1

Huh

2

u/blender4life 1d ago

you said they could be close friends like good friends, the guy replied to you with a joke that said 5000 miles isn't close like distance, then you replied saying you have good online friends, indicating you didn't get the joke. r/woosh is a sub for people not getting jokes in comments

It's three random photos with some words at the top of them, what more evidences do you need to believe this is real?

u/__hey__its__me__ 2d ago

42

u/gin_and_toxic 2d ago

It's amazing she managed to tell that from just his voice.

28

u/ninjette847 2d ago

My husband has seizures and I can absolutely tell one is coming on by his voice and I've noticed it in other people too. It's really specific but hard to explain, kind of like stuttering while being out of breath.

78

u/Eastern_Community_29 2d ago

This is real. It was my son, working for cheshire police in Winsford, Cheshire who answered the call. It was his second week in the job and it is his monotone, dulcet tones that you hear.

13

u/HearseWithNoName 2d ago

Only a mother could know her own child's voice from two monotone words (and still compliment them too). Well, not to mention he probably told you what happened too lol

8

u/dramaticfool 1d ago

Usually you look something up before calling it false these days. I understand this format is constantly used to spread misinformation, but in this case it was true.

-7

Yeah I know everyone’s address that I play Xbox with on the other side of the world!

18

u/drunky_crowette 2d ago

I mean if you're friends for a while someone might send something to each other? I live in Kansas in the US but I know my buddy Hugh's address in Queensland, Australia.

2

u/IrishViking22 2d ago

An Australian Hugh? Does he grunt/growl a lot?

2

u/drunky_crowette 2d ago

Sort of, yes. Definitely when he's drunk at least...

No disrespect whatsoever to my Hugh, but he's not as jacked as that Hugh

Not surprising, that is the Hugh Jackedman after all

19

u/jestenough 2d ago

Or even how to contact emergency responders

26

u/mermaidpaint 2d ago

She could have Googled a local police dispatcher in his area, they would have been able to help or redirect.

I had an issue as a supervisor in a call centre, where my agent called a home and ended up speaking with a six year old boy, who was crying because he was home alone (his older sister decided to go shopping with her friends and not babysit). We were in a big city and he was in a rural area far north.

I called our local 911, gave them the address, and they transferred me to the local RCMP dispatcher in the area. They said they would send an officer with a social worker, and because everyone knew everyone locally, someone called the boy's mother at work and she immediately headed home.

My agent stayed on the phone with the boy the entire time until an adult showed up.

9

u/duskrat 2d ago

That's a dedicated response.

3

u/Talkycoder 2d ago

If you tried to contact a local service or a specific area of our healthcare / policing services, you'd receive a message advising to call 999 for emergencies and a email request form for non-emergencies with 3+ working day wait. It's definitely not as easy as other countries.

However, I have just googled "how to contact 999 from abroad" and supposedly the meteopolitan police have a non-emergency number for specifically for requests from abroad. I imagine that was called then whoever they got to through to called 999.

43

u/Catahooo 2d ago

Clearly she had his address as friends often do, we don't know their backstory. As for the emergency response she called non emergency line of a nearby police station

3

u/gin_and_toxic 2d ago

That's why you need to remember the jingle: https://youtu.be/HWc3WY3fuZU

5

u/eggfortman 2d ago

I realize most people are going with the " she had his address" story. Lets say this happens and you don't have your friends address, is there any way you can help?

12

u/Bata600 2d ago

Having a 1st and last name might help. Doesn't mean it will help, tho. Depends on how many people are named like that and how much are your countries institutions willing to help.

4

u/Steamysauna 2d ago

If she had his cell number, I assume they could track down his phone number through the cell provider pretty damn fast...

3

u/IrishViking22 2d ago

By giving the police his gamertag

0

u/JohnCenaJunior 2d ago

Probably got his ip

3

u/Forward_Cheek4775 2d ago

IPs aren't precise and can at most pinpoint your county and ISP.

1

u/UrAntiChrist 1d ago

Then they call the isp and get the address on the account.

40

u/cookie_monstra 1d ago

We had to do this for a friend with apilepsy that went "bonk!" and then silent during a discord VC, we were afraid he had a seizure. We were a group of friends from all over the world, so we called another friend who is in the same country as him, and she called his phone to make sure he is alright before calling help for him (she didn't know his address so that was tricky).

Turns out the idiot was just chatting with us while in bed and simply fell asleep during a boring part of the conversation. We literally heard him answer his phone with a groggy "hello?" And then he came back to apologize/yell at us 🥲

We were just trying to be good friends and save his life!

5

u/NUMBerONEisFIRST 1d ago

For all you knew then, you could be telling a much different story today. You did the right thing.

24

u/_BEEEF_SUPREME_ 1d ago edited 1d ago

Reminds me of this one time I had to call 911 for a discord friend who suffered from seizures, one night we heard a loud crash and what sounded like agonal breathing. I knew the town he lived in but not his actual name. So when I called the dispatcher they asked "ok, can you tell me his name?". I panicked, went to his steam profile, for some reason, thinking it would be on there and said the name listed. "Girth Brooks" I said, the line went quiet for about 30 seconds. Another user told me his real name. Long story short he ended up being OK but I was super embarrassed.

3

u/mai_tai87 1d ago

Girth Brooks is also a gay porn actor....

Better safe than sorry.

I'm sure 911 dispatchers feel the same way.

She's a hero.

19

u/Mack006 2d ago

Reminds me of that video where some guy goes to a gaming conference to meet with the people he knew online. When he got back home, he broke down when he realised they were his real friends and didn’t realise how lonely he was until then.

19

u/WaffleHouseBeard 2d ago

Who knew Texas was only 5000 miles away from the UK

7

u/ThereAndFapAgain2 1d ago

My geography teacher probably did.

34

u/calico810 2d ago

How did she even know he was having a seizure? Not like you can type or anything during

68

u/StanknBeans 2d ago

Voice chat prolly

65

u/tilt-a-whirly-gig 2d ago

Somebody just posted the sauce, turns out it's a real story. In it, the woman said she heard sounds that she could only describe as a seizure. I presume she has experience around seizures and/or had discussed medical history with the boy.

(Btw, he was 17 and she was 20. He was a 'boy' and she was a 'woman', but the age gap is perfectly reasonable)

34

u/Hosaf 2d ago

Wtf is happening with reddit that we have to justify peoples age gaps just cuz one is a male the other is female.

29

u/TehNudel 2d ago

Because people don't believe in platonic relationships apparently.

9

u/YsoL8 2d ago

Have you seen how people on reddit react to any kind of female presence in media?

And thats not just the men either

6

u/KiwiDanelaw 2d ago

Neither of them are underage in their respective states/countries. Unless they were sharing pictures or videos. But ya know, also entirely possible they were just friends...

5

u/Visual_Seaweed8292 2d ago

He is in the UK, where the age of consent is 16 if it matters even remotely...

This thing called a video stream

Ifs kind of common

5

u/InitialDizzy4252 2d ago

Thats what friends are for

5

u/Moltac 1d ago

Gaming friendships are real. I met three of my best friends online gaming back in 2011. Now one of them is set to be my best man next year and the other two are groomsmen.

4

u/sulaymanf 2d ago

I’ve always wondered how to respond if this happened, do you contact your local emergency services or try to look up call in the state they’re in?

2

u/MarsupialMisanthrope 2d ago

Call the non-emergency line in theirs and hope like hell there’s a connect to human option.

3

u/SixtyNineFlavours 1d ago

Gamers are a genuinely lovely bunch for the most part.

2

u/uneautretheorie 2d ago

In a sense, even Reddit is like that. Sometimes people are a little acidic, but it's proof that they're emotionally involved in responding to your comment and not indifferent to it. It's something I rarely come across IRL.

2

u/Justarandomduck152 1d ago

Isn't this super old

2

u/Mikalton 1d ago

How does that work btw? I assume she knew his address because if I ever had to experience that I'd have no idea where to call first.

I assume they both knew about the whole seizure thing and she has information prepared for any event this would happen

-17

u/deadspacekillers 2d ago

Though seizures are bad, they don't result in death very often.... She may have helped him. "Saved his life" is a bit of a stretch.

8

u/deadassstho 2d ago

“may have helped him”

she did help him. what do you gain by downplaying what she did? what do you lose by giving credit where it’s due?

1

u/deadspacekillers 2d ago

Fair. She definitely helped him. I just don't like the superlative language on social media. It drives me nuts.

25

u/Keefyfingaz 2d ago

The seizures themselves are not usually fatal but they can be. I believe the main risk is if a person has a seizure they have a significantly higher probability of hitting their head on something.

6

u/ordinaryracco0n 2d ago

first time i ever had a seizure, i was actually pretty lucky to have just hit my lip and not my head. it was a nasty fall

-15

u/deadspacekillers 2d ago

I literally take care of people who hit their heads. Zero people that I have taken care of that have seizures died directly from the seizure

9

u/Keefyfingaz 2d ago

Fatalities are rare but again, it does happen. Also in many cases seizures are caused by preexisting brain injuries, and hitting the head can perpetuate the problem.

edit: the seizure itself will rarely kill but it often directly leads to death, for example while driving or while in high up area.

1

u/deadspacekillers 2d ago

Yeah no shit. I said death is rare. Yeah, it's possible, but 99% of seizures don't result in death.

2

u/Keefyfingaz 2d ago

There are too many variables for that statistic to mean much. Are we saying actually dying from seizing, or death as a result of seizing. Is this statistic for every individual seizure? If so, what is the percentage for someone who has multiple seizures?

Even if we want to accept 99% as literally accurate, if millions of people have seizures, 1% of a million is still a lot.

Maybe the moral of the story is to take preventative measures rather than just say "only 1% of seizures are fatal 🤷 ROAD TRIP!"

1

u/deadspacekillers 2d ago

I am a neurosurgeon. Seizures are bad. Seizures don't often result in death. "Saved his life" is a bit of a stretch.

2

u/Keefyfingaz 2d ago

I don't disagree in this very niche situation in the post but just because siezures don't "often" result in death doesn't make it negligible. It's not a matter of neuroscience, the seizures are not what's killing people, it's gravity and the shit they hit their head on.

0

u/deadspacekillers 2d ago

Yes. That's what I said. Seizure rarely cause death. "Saved his life" is a bit of a stretch

2

u/waisonline99 2d ago

Save it.

The internet isn't interested in the truth if it doesn't match their perception of reality.

0

u/PersnicketyKeester 2d ago

In many cases? Where are you getting that info?

1

u/Keefyfingaz 2d ago

I mean I have personally met 2 people who had seizures due to brain injuries. It's a fact. Why am I being treated like I'm spreading misinformation right now? Lol this is fairly common knowledge.

0

u/PersnicketyKeester 2d ago

2 people is not "in many cases". I have an ex who had random seizures that his doctors couldn't find a reason for. Another friends little boy has had liver issues since birth and has had a couple seizures here and there that they cant find a reason for. Can I say as a fact that in many cases doctors cant find a reason for them?

2

u/Keefyfingaz 2d ago edited 2d ago

Ok I mean there are alot of different reasons for people to have seizures. I didn't say head injuries were the leading cause of seizures, I said in many cases. Im assuming the 2 people Ive met are not the only 2 people in the world to have had seizures related to brain injury. I don't know the exact number. If it was 100 (spoiler alert it's probably exponentially higher than that) id say that's many cases. You getting hung up on "many cases" is weird imo

Edit: and yes in many cases the cause of the seizure may be unknown, to answer your question

6

u/Ok_Support3 2d ago

People don't die from hitting their heads?

2

u/deadspacekillers 2d ago edited 2d ago

They can. But we also do surgery to keep them from dying. It's a thing

Edit: actually this is great. Yeah, you can die from hitting your head. But 99.9% of people that hit their heads don't die. So if you hit your head, and I drive you to the ER for them to get a CT and say, no - you're ok.... Did I "save your life"?

1

u/Ok_Support3 2d ago

Oh fair. I think what people mean is someone has a seizure, fall with their head on like a table corner and that is the problem right. If I understand you correctly, it is, thankfully, not that common.

The human body can surely take a lot of damage, and at the same time someone trips insignificantly but breaks their neck.

1

u/Longjumping_East3393 2d ago

SUDEP is a considerable cause of death for people with frequent and poorly controlled seizures. The death is usually not caused by head trauma. How does a "neurosurgeon" not know that?

1

u/deadspacekillers 1d ago

Yeah, I was drinking last night and feeling very contentious. Apparently I went to a bunch of subs last night and started arguing just to argue. Sorry.

7

u/Nysnorlax 2d ago

The seizures ive seen range from mild shakes to full thrust body hitting everything hard so depends. He could e suffered further injury if not caught in time, im fine w the title indicating his life was saved bc someone called the police

-5

u/deadspacekillers 2d ago

So I've seen hundreds of seizures. Zero of them resulted in death. But it's fine. I'm glad he got the care he needed

2

u/Blatantly_Truthful 2d ago

You could have seen a million but it doesn’t change the fact that it does happen. It may be rare, but not non-existent. When seizures last for more than five minutes or happen back to back without recovering it can result in status epilepticus, which is life-threatening. A friend of mine died from SUDEP - had a grand seizure while asleep. I’ve never read up on SUDEP because I’ve told myself ignorance is bliss. I’d like to think that him being asleep when it hit somehow spared him from fear, agony and pain - knowing that no one was coming to help.

-4

u/deadspacekillers 2d ago

Right. It can happen. But it rarely happens. "Saved his life" is a bit of a stretch

1

u/MarsupialMisanthrope 2d ago

All but one of my grandparents died of head trauma after falling and hitting their heads on something.

You know something other than old age that tends to cause people to fall and hit their heads? Seizures.

2

u/HushFunded 2d ago

Aside from this being a low yield comment you have made, status kills people somewhat frequently if not managed.

Some estimates between 5-35% mortality rate.

While I haven't watched the videos or read it all to know if this kid was in status, it's not too much of a stretch to use saved his life as both a possible measure and also a feeling good headline.

1

u/LickinThighs2 2d ago

I mean, as someone who is epileptic, if I have a seizure it literally means I have had break through activity, it is the single worst state you can be in as an epileptic and likely the worst seizures you will experience, likely as a sign of missed medication or your dose not being therapeutic. The last time I had a seizure I was hospitalized and literally have no memory of the hour+ I was in and out.

Go read about status epilepticus, etc, it is genuinely a bigger deal than you realize, someone with controlled epilepsy having a seizure can be a sign of a very very major problem.

For me it was quite literally that my dose already wasn't really enough for a 12hr period between doses in the first place, and forgetting medication in the morning because I slept through an alarm, and rushed to work, lol

1

u/Visual_Seaweed8292 2d ago

The seizure its self might not be fatal but hitting your head during it can be and having a trained medical professional assessment ASAP is very important.

1

u/sweet_so_sweet 2d ago

Sure, in cases where there are people nearby to help. The parents didn't even know it had happened. My great grandmother died from complications of her seizure because she vomited during it and aspirated. She was alone when it happened, so there was no one around who could reposition or help her. She drowned in her own vomit. This happened long before I was born, mind you, but downplaying the danger isn't helpful, because you never know what can happen

-3

u/balirosa 2d ago edited 2d ago

Paramedics and doctors can do nothing for a seizure besides turn them on their side and make sure they don’t suffocate on their own vomit and saliva. Is epilepsy so uncommon in that nobody noticed this? Paramedics are an expensive bill in America and if you have seizures you know better. They are not neurologists in the ambulance you need a specialized doctor. Make an appointment.

10

u/NeuroEpiCenter 2d ago

"can do nothing, besides making sure they don't die"

-4

u/balirosa 2d ago

There’s no way they got to the house before the seizure was over this is sensationalism at best. Anyone that has seizures know not to call the paramedics

5

u/NeuroEpiCenter 2d ago

I know, I was having seizures for years because of a brain tumor.

If people are not familiar with seizures, the best they can do is calling paramedics. It is a life threatening event. Even if there is only a 1% chance that a life can be saved, it's always right to call paramedics.

-1

u/balirosa 2d ago

The medical industry Reddit bots must be working harder than Web Md to get yall to pay the hospital a visit

3

u/veraif 1d ago

You know y'all only having this convo because Merica is ass? Everywhere else this type of visit would be free or very cheap

2

u/NeuroEpiCenter 2d ago

It's not about the hospital. I was only transported to the hospital twice, but being checked by paramedics and an emergency doctor does make sense.
Why are you so against this? Does this change anything for you?

Or is it because the US system is so broken that you are afraid of the bills?
In the country I live in, the bill is 10€ per day in a hospital. Paramedics and emergency doctors coming to won't cost anything for you directly.
And yes, you will say that I pay for it indirectly. Sure, currently it's 6% of my salary. Fine for me.

Paramedics are free in the UK there's absolutely no reason not to call them also paramedics and ambulances are the same service in the UK the station will make the chlice of which one to send based on what info they have. Atleast there on there way to do a post seizure check up and take him to hospital for follow up if needed. Honestly if someone is having a seizure or any medical emergency and you dont call the emergency services I think you should be put of trial.

Hopefully the specialist is at the hospital when he got there. He could have ordered the nurse to scan him and wait for the results, so he can study them and prescribe him medication.

Not if he hit his head on the way down and didn't make it to the hospital.

Its a medical emergency, I dont see any reason why the emergency services shouldn't be called.

Yeah maybe the kid was overdosing who knows

Maybe overdose, maybe an allergic reaction, maybe just playing a prank on his yank mate. Still better to call emergency services than risk it. They will asses the situation and deal with it appropriately regardless of what random people on reddit think.

The UK is a country, but Texas is not a country. If they're going to compare people's locations they should do it consistently. If the headline is telling us where in the US then it should tell us where in the UK.

Is that really your main take away?

u/Six_of_1 2d ago

Yes. I hate it when people project the USA's internal divisions onto the world stage and then don't do the same for other countries.

You know Texas is larger in area than the UK right?

3x as large roughly

u/Six_of_1 2d ago

Yes but I don't care, it's beside the point. I don't think that's the reason they made the comparison. If it had been a US state smaller than the UK I think they still would have said the state.

People internationally know where "texas" is. People do not know where "Nottingham-upon-Worstershire" is.

People internationally know where the USA is, so they could say the USA.

This data makes no sense. That flight takes more than 10 hours, he kept having the seizure in the meanwhile? And also isn't there a way to call the UK police from Texas?

5

u/Laithani 2d ago

Do you know how to read?

2

u/kosantosbik 1d ago

Apparently not. Apologies. I don't know how I read that.

Surprised they didn't arrest him instead

For... having a seizure?

u/Twitxx 1d ago

Just my experience with UK police. Either utterly useless or arresting the victim because it's easier.
