For those of us who still refuse to support Spotify, how about a name so I can find her elsewhere
61
u/I_Am_Anjelen Sep 12 '26
the name is in the title of the thread, but I clicked the link for you;
Sprites is an 11-year-old self-taught handpan artist who exploded on social media worldwide within just a few months. When she touched the handpan for the first time in March 2025, there was an instant and undeniable connection. Refusing to get a teacher, she taught herself entirely by intuition. In autumn, she began sharing her music on Instagram and TikTok. Within just a few months, her improvised performances have reached over 100 million views and gathered 1 million followers across all platforms. Listeners describe her music as magical, healing, and beyond her years; as if she were channeling something timeless. Her upcoming debut album will feature both acoustic handpan and produced versions with energetic beats, blending pure emotion with rhythm and flow.

u/NicoBango Sep 12 '26
Thank you, saw that in the title, I didnt realize her name was Sprites.
7
u/paditoburrito Sep 12 '26
Haha, I thought the exact same until I read these comments. Figured Sprites was part of the instrument name.

Slow it down a tiny bit and it would make great flashback/memory/emotional cut-scene music.

u/King-Animal Sep 12 '26
I am curious myself. It looks rotoscope
20
u/shwarma_heaven Sep 12 '26
rotoscope. My favorite was Lord of the rings.
7
u/terminalbungus Sep 12 '26
Oh hell yeah that movie rules. The og rankin bass Hobbit is a better movie but the Lotr rotoscope stuff is so far out.

Either an old 60-70's commercial or the animated series The Hardy Boys (1969) seems to be the most likely.
The Hardy Boys has scenes that are quite similar IMO: https://youtu.be/RKEZc1vQoXc?t=646

One day, she might be able to buy her family furniture that isn't pallets in casters. I'm rooting for her.

u/HookerBot5000 Sep 12 '26
Not that it really matters, but that seems to be a sun room or covered patio. I’m guessing their indoor furniture looks different

how difficult is it to play this instrument? does anyone know more about it?
236
u/FeistyThings Sep 11 '26
I think it's all in one key so anything you play will sound correct. It's more about rythym

Certainly! Music is about much more than just playing the "right" notes

Yea, its easy to make music where it doesnt clash on one of these, but she's using it to tell an actual musical story with the note choice and rhythm. Shes very talented.
2
u/EniesBobby Sep 12 '26
Her melody is intentional and dynamic, definitely takes skill to write/vibe in that direction. Even if it’s improvisation, it’s a lot better than just any ol person could do by smacking random pads

Yeah, even when she slightly stuffs up at about 18-19 seconds she stays in the groove really nicely.

I play many instruments. Though this is awesome, it’s not a very complicated instrument. All of the notes are in one key, so there are no “wrong” notes. Her ear is good and she can keep a beat so it’s obvious she’s talented. But I wouldn’t consider this extremely complex or difficult.
10
u/mostly_lurking Sep 12 '26
This is very obviously not pentatonic, its C minor. And everyone saying its super easy because she can't accidentally hit off key notes seems to ignore the fact that she has a solid sense of rhythm and melody.

u/waterwateryall Sep 12 '26
She's made a song, and it's great.
16
u/Olderandolderagain Sep 12 '26
Definitely. Someone asked about the complexity of that instrument and I was just answering their question. I even said she was talented…

u/CustomSocks Sep 11 '26
This isn’t exactly true. There are many scales you can get handpans in and many of them have dissonant notes. Sure it’s not as difficult as piano because you have the potential to hit any note on the western scale. Also “sticking” can be tricky - thinking ahead with what hand you need for the next note and getting it there on time.
29
u/Olderandolderagain Sep 12 '26
I wasn’t saying she wasn’t talented. And what I said about the instrument is “exactly” true. I own hand pans. This is one in particular is without a doubt a consonant tuning. There’s no debating that. Don’t gaslight me.
She’s definitely talented but a person with musical aptitude could pick this up in a few days. You can’t learn the violin in a few days. That was the original question. How complicated is this instrument. And I’m telling you as a person who plays multiple instruments, including the hand pan, it’s not very complicated. End of story.

u/bobby3eb Sep 12 '26
As another multi-musician i agree. It's also a steady rhythm with many common note patterns being played

u/ShinyJangles Sep 11 '26
Yeah and in the clip she is playing a more complicated progression than random notes.

u/Living_Knowledge_783 Sep 12 '26
yes not hard and was over sold by hipsters. the claim was it was sold by a man in Sweden that hand crafts them with special ancient tools to get this sound...

The instrument is made to sound good no matter what you do. As long as you're jammin', it sounds good.

The whole band are the coolest muppets. The poem read in-character at Jim Henson's funeral is legit amazing. "Fearless leader. Green flippered gentleness. Fill my dreams with your vision of unexplored possibilities. Shine on! Shine on eternally bright in our hearts and minds! Fearless leader."

u/bryancald Sep 11 '26

It’s easy in that it’s simple, but you gotta have rhythm and an idea of what sounds good in terms of variance and such
6
u/Arch____Stanton Sep 12 '26
Rhythm is going to help for sure but no matter what you will never hit a sour note.
You can mimic this on a programmable keyboard (and also wind chimes).→ More replies (1)8

There is a vast difference between “making the instrument make the noise it’s supposed to make” and “playing it”
It’s easy to approach a piano and make it make the sound it’s supposed to make.
It’s much harder to play an actual piece of music.
9
u/RJizzyJizzle Sep 12 '26
Yes, I have one and it's beautiful and relaxing without much effort, but what she's doing is difficult - she also has one with more notes than mine.
6
6
u/TheMostModestofMice Sep 12 '26
Not saying what she's doing is simple or easy, but a handpan is just one fixed key though making it way more intuitive. That's why people sound terrible if they start hitting random notes on a piano or most other instruments.

Why are they so fcking expensive? And do all sound like this one? Imagine spending $500 just to see it wasn't the one you liked. I want one but I'd have to work for 3 months to get one lmao

I mean step one is to not order an instrument online lol. Go to a music store, you might be surprised what they have in stock. You get to mess around with it before you buy and also you don’t have to give Bezos your money lol

I can't remember if it's The Elder Scrolls, Baldur's Gate, or something else. But one of those games has this in it and I've kind of wanted one ever since except it would be one more instrument cluttering up space and not being practiced.

A cajon is relatively easy to use, easy to learn, and cheap. Not a bad investment aif you're an amateur musician
4
u/MinuetInUrsaMajor Sep 12 '26
cheap
I remember them being $2000 when I looked but then I looked on Amazon and seeing more like $200-500. But I'm confused cause some are called steel drums and some called something else and now you're calling them cajones.

Fwiw it's impossibly to play a bad sequence of notes on these, they're literally made so all notes are in the same pitch and timbre so they sound good together. As long as you have a mild sense of rhythm you can play "good" music on a handpan.

Hang drum yeh? Last time I briefly looked they run $500 on the low side. I'd like one though, so I could make it sound like shit

I recently saw someone playing 2 of these instruments. Each one produced a different tone so there is more variety in the melody.
