These are amazing to watch .., from a distance.

It's thunder and rain. I live in Tulsa and the summer nights with lightning storms are my favorites.

u/Fluffy_Camp_8999 Aug 30 '26
I'm from Bixby... I miss those gullywashers, and crisp fall nights... Pretty much everything that I still love about Oklahoma has to do with its natural beauty. 🌲🍃🍁

Meh, they're kinda fun to be in.
Signed a dude who's had 3 tornadoes touch down within 5 mile of his house in the past month

u/DarthNoctyrix Aug 30 '26
Especially if you’re somewhere where your shit won’t break. I was on a military base during one of these once while TDY. Didn’t have to worry about my personal property getting hit by hail and was relatively confident the building wouldn’t fall in so just a roaring good time

u/AHrubik Aug 30 '26
You say that till it's an EF5. The aftermath is a sight to behold. Cars and trucks wrapped around trees. There was a bank on I-35 that was directly in the path of the 2013 tornado. It erased the building. The people inside took shelter inside the vault but the door wouldn't close.

That's sped up. I can tell because of the pixels.
3
u/Reasonable-Luck-8986 Aug 30 '26
Of it is, they move fast but not quite that fast, it's still a wonder to behold!!

u/Lune_Moooon Aug 30 '26
tbf it might be amazing to watch from up close too, if we could stay calm in near death experiences

u/ShadowAMS Aug 30 '26
I was travelling to Oklahoma from Texas in the Winter and a thunderstorm hit around the border near Paris. It was hailing like crazy. We had to pull into a gas station to avoid windshield being broken. That same storm system produced a Blizzard over night in the part of Oklahoma I went to.(Enid) Went from hailing thunderstorm to a blizzard in a couple hours. Crazy weather there.

They are absolutely incredible when viewed from the air. We had to divert around t-storms but could see them. Lightning going every direction, like flying through an other-worldly landscape.

u/External-Awareness68 Aug 30 '26
I moved away from Nebraska recently after living there my whole life. The thing I miss the most is tornado season storms. Oklahoma is even crazier I think

It's like a fun spectator sport. Until they start naming off roads close to you

I've lived in Washington State my whole life. Before the internet, I thought I'd seen lightning storms.

This is random but everything I see on Reddit today makes me feel like what I thought America feels like when I was 10-15. Goofy adult humor, that cozy yet dangerous weather, and just safe somehow.
I swear I'm not high or anything.

I am amazed. I’m trying to figure out if this was slowed down or sped up. I mean, it seems pretty obvious that it’s sped up, but there’s something about the rhythm of the lightning that almost makes it look slow motion.

When Bro has the opportunity to use original, once in a lifetime nature audio, but instead choses to add stupid music over it

Love a good storm. That being said, I would much rather hear it than the music.

u/WashSmall8954 Aug 30 '26
As an Oklahoman, I used to love to sit out as the sun was setting under the horizon and watch the lightning storms in the distance with my mom. It was one of the only happy memories I have with her. Also, I know this video is sped up, but I have legit driven through a few thunderstorms where it felt like the lightning was striking around and above us this often. They're insane.

I've seen some crazy storms but not one of them had the cheesy music.
Best storms to watch, IMO, are from a shoreline. 20 or so miles away it's all lightshow and no thunder to scare my pup.

I dunno. Dallas Texas weather was intense enough. tornado alley is scary in that you get little warning before a train is rolling rough your town. Can you imaging of of those at night and you don't wake up....

HAve seen one like that over EUROPE TOO !!!
Seems we are in the Storm season early and it is in full power.
Hurricane season going to be harsh !!!
Tell people whom you know to inspect their ready state for the storm season !!!
USA is going to get Hurricanes, and the EU now gets one too , if the storm season is strong / Sea water and Land mass heat strong !

No red, green, or blue lightning in that one. Pretty tame for Oklahoma unless you're north, far south, or in the panhandle. Everywhere there's sand and red clay it gets WILD. Dry enough, storms stay high and get even better. Only single thing I miss about OK

I’ve done quite a bit of truck driving in the dakotas. Seeing this gives me anxiety. Just motoring down the interstate right at something like this with nowhere to hide.

Anyone know what the music is? Shazam says it’s The Calling by Elian Skye. But I think maybe it’s something else that’s similar. Or maybe someone playing a cover on piano?

Sounds like there’s an underlying riff of Einauldi that breaks into the Interstellar motif at the end with the few high notes but with extended timing. Would love to find out the source if anyone knows. This is the closest I found

That cell threw a couple of lateral strikes. It was a triple-decker. Those are responsible for most reports of lightning striking significantly outside the storm's footprint.

I went to IT training at OU years ago and on the third day a storm came through and I legit thought we were all going to be killed. About 45 minutes after the storm started we all had to move to an interior room in the building that was designed to withstand tornadoes in case one hit. It was the loudest storm I've been through in the states with the exception of hurricane Irene in 2011.

I don't see storms like this, but I have a covered porch and my backyard looks out onto farmer fields as far as the eye can see. I can see some pretty nice storms rolling in, and I can stay nice and comfortable under a porch.

was it a storm or a space ship entering the atmosphere? Hard to tell at the end. Very cool.

Honestly, this would be THE reason to live in somewhere like Oklahoma. The lack of any hills and mountains in large stretches of the area combined with the location's propensity toward storms, really sets it up to be a hot spot for watching lightning storms from afar and watching the groundless strikes.
I live in the US south east, and it's a bit hilly where we are, and while I love the surrounding area, I don't have anywhere to watch the lightning like this unless it's just happenstance of it happening in a single specific spot. Driving around isn't really going to give me any better views since overall its' just more hills and trees (no complaints on the trees).
Stunning stuff.

We had one like this last weekend, just off the beach where I live. We were out shelling and shark tooth hunting, and it was incredible to watch. We all preferred to watch the light show than find teeth (but we did walk away with 150+ conchs!)
