It's a hotel. Yuetianxia Hot Spring Hotel in Guangdong, China
Has excellent reviews/ratings, and a room costs as low as $100 USD/night
But yea I get it, Reddit hates everything
1.2k
u/Potential_Fishing942 Aug 12 '26
Knowing this is a commercial operation makes it make sense. The video calls them houses though which immediately makes people think (reasonablely) that the upkeep on their own home through HOA fees would be insane. Video should call them hotel/rentals imo

It’s a great idea , Wonder if it has a current like a lazy river ? that would make it really cool
7
u/LaceOfRisa Aug 13 '26
I feel like that would be a primary way to keep the water moving and not create dead spaces. The alternative would be lots more drains and jets... might need to look it up now.

There are similar things elsewhere. We have Strata in australia which is similar except that they really only exist to look after shared property (think apartment buildings, shared driveways, pools like this post, etc)

Exactly. Knowing that people who mess with this pool get thrown out immediately is another point. Imagine this pool with thousands of private owned houses an just one idiot doing his oil change in his backyard...

Room, yes but those are villas so I bet it'll be around 2-300 on the low end. Villas in Thailand cost about $800-2000 a night. For a family with adult kids that's a good deal
24
u/chosenbyyoutoday Aug 12 '26
Villas that size in Thailand are much cheaper than $800-$2000. You can get a week in a two bed for around £600.
A 5 bedroom is around £1200 for a week...

This would be one of the few things that having an HOA would be well and truly justified for.
Otherwise you have jags moving in who don't care about having a canal in their back yard who are gonna whine about and resist having to pay for its upkeep.
If more of these HOA neighborhoods actually had features and elements that made them unique so that people would seek them out, HOAs would be a lot less hated. An HOA is good for maintaining a luxury or idiosyncrasy like this, because it can function as a guarantor for people who join that community in order to have that unique thing that it will remain and be maintained in the future.
Otherwise you might move into a community that has a really nice dog park or something in it, but then people who care about supporting it move out, and people who don't care move in, and then it goes into disrepair.

Stagnant smelly waters and ideal for breeding hoards of mosquitos and an added bonus of drowning toddlers?? Where do I sign up?
2
u/Technical_Stand9939 Aug 17 '26
easy solutions- Mosquitos need standing water- so just a slight current solves those issues. The toddlers- make it a 50 plus community where children are banned. Children do not need to be permitted everywhere- and bad parents cause that problem.

I worked at a resort with pools like this and swim up bars. I pulled Christmas day shift one year and got a call that a kid left a turd in the pool. I arrived at the site and it wasn't a turd it was a diarrhoea cloud. They didn't shut down the pool. Just add some extra chlorine. Carry on.

Yeah China does that. OpenStreetMap has an actual map of things in China because they’re not a business trying to operate there.
The whole thing is stupid when you consider how annoying it must be there in exchange for exactly zero additional security.

I'm impressed by the engineering required for this. Are there sections that can be dammed off? How do you clean it? How do you repair cracks? how many pumps and cleaners do you need? How do you chemically balance it?
Do people actually use this? It would be neat if the hotel made room delivery by aquatic drone.
Is it common for someone to swim up to a neighbor's room?

They exist on a smaller scale in a good few resorts around the world. I've had a look in royal river Tenerife when staying in one of there nearby sister resorts nearby. Weirder concept in royal rivers as you can swim into other people's villas patios.

u/anon_lurk Aug 14 '26
They could probably use cofferdams to isolate spots in an emergency. Then temporary pumps to keep circulation going around that. Would be pretty easy.
No idea how many filters/pumps/chemicals that thing takes though. I'd imagine they have to add chemicals spread across the entire thing or constantly drip them in because if you just shocked that thing with enough chlorine in one spot it would probably melt somebody lmao.

They tried this with canals / gulf access in Florida, look up Cape Coral. Now all the canals are in disrepair and have filled in with sediment, nobody can use them anymore and they stink with dead fish because the water gets no circulation.
51
u/Magog14 Aug 12 '26
There are hundreds of interconnected canals in southeast Florida especially Fort Lauderdale and there are no issues. It's simply a matter of maintenance.
→ More replies (2)8
u/Roga-Danar Aug 12 '26
You’re right, but I think the canals in Cape Coral are a bit more extensive (and possibly poorly designed), they go inland like 3+ miles. The canals around Las Olas in Fort Lauderdale run along natural rivers and don’t seem to be more than like a mile from the intercostal.
Either way, canal maintenance = money and Fort Lauderdale is on another level financially than Cape Coral.
12
u/Magog14 Aug 12 '26
No, they run all the way to the Everglades. That's a large part of their function. To help direct drainage during storms.
43
u/Spaduf Aug 12 '26
Yeah but that's America. We haven't been able to manage basic maintenance in any context for 50 years.

I stayed at a resort in Mexico that was like this. It was awesome. Could walk out of the room, jump right in the pool and swim to a bar. My kids loved it and nobody worrying about finding/reserving chairs by a small pool.
Now if these were houses that people lived in, like the article title, that changes everything. The maintenance/upkeep compared to the amount of time you would actually use it would never make sense.
