Ok, is this real? I'd hope so, but who the hell knows nowadays?

It's a real festival held in the Göreme region of Türkiye, this year it began July 30th and ends today. Looks like a dream doesn't it? :)
https://cappadocia-balloon-festival.com/
Edit: It's a real video with a warm filter.

Whatever you do, don't attack that truck and trailer in front of you until you've leveled up. Looks like it's at full health.

Thank you, this is going on my bucket list

u/XPsychoMunkyX Aug 02 '26
This also happens every year in Sonoma County, CA, just in case it’s closer to you than Türkiye ✌🏼

Come to the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta! Happens for two weeks beginning the first weekend in October. It's the largest hot air balloon event in the world!
18
u/Ecmelt Aug 02 '26
I hope you visit Cappadocia and you'll see the difference. It is hard to explain it without sounding like an ass saying "mine is better".
Cappadocia is really unique in its terrain and the winds it produces and the legal framework that allows pilots to do otherwise "risky and illegal" moves (in other parts of the World). Not to mention because it is not a festival but a year-round thing, the whole region is built around this. It is highly immersive as experiences go.
Written by a biased Turkish guy. :P

u/JoeHTP Aug 02 '26
Been lucky enough to balloon in Cappadocia, it’s an incredible experience. It’s not just the ballooning, it’s the cave hotels, underground cities, great food and great people. Still one of my favorite trips ever
2
u/didijeen Aug 03 '26
I believe you! I am sure it is worth visiting. Albuquerque has balloons up all the time, not just for Fiesta. They are part of our culture. We grew up with the balloons. We have lost people in our balloons. They are US, part of our identity. Have you been to Albuquerque? Have YOU seen the difference? My good friend Tómas, whom I met when he was a German foreign exchange student in high school back in 1988, still comes here to fly. It was the whole reason he came to New Mexico, because his dad was a pilot and flew. And here we are all these many years later and he still comes. To the biggest hot air balloon event in the world. He runs the gas balloon race. Albuquerque is special-you may not know it, but WE do. 💙
1
u/pasrachilli Aug 02 '26
I wouldn't say Albuquerque is without its charms. The reason Albuquerque has such a large ballooning event is from its unique winds, as well.

I live in NZ so they're both pretty far for me, but I do appreciate your suggestion, I will keep that in mind

It’s been on my bucket list for years. There’s a lot of amazing ruins there too.

Actually it isn’t only during the festival - this happens every day with suitable wind conditions. We did it and took off from exactly here in October.
2
u/Classic_and_Vintage Aug 02 '26
But this video is not from this year as I’ve seen it posted many years ago on Reddit
2
u/Cletus7Seven Aug 03 '26
They also just do this every single morning that the weather permits. I did it back it 2018. A lot of people go here for this as a travel destination, including myself in 2018. It was amazing

Was there too this year.. one of the most beautiful mornings on my trip ✨
19
u/Odd-Ice-3467 Aug 02 '26
Yes, it is real, as someone mentioned, it’s in Goreme but even though I can not deny it is beautiful it doesn’t look exactly like in the video, the person who shot the video has clearly twitched the red and orange color on the video to make it look more incredible, still, in real life is breathtaking and 100% to visit
6
u/stylz168 Aug 02 '26
Yes it’s real.
My wife and I did one of those rides and a photo shoot the next day. It’s beautiful and calm and well worth the expense.
2
u/Gregorygregory888888 Aug 02 '26
I'd love to be able to see this in person. Has to be incredible to observe and experience.
3
u/stylz168 Aug 02 '26
Yeah it definitely is. Worth the one time trip, and Turkey as a country is a cat lovers dream so it was that much better for us.
5
u/misterfuss Aug 03 '26
I wasn’t there for the festival, but my husband and I did the hot air balloon ride at Goreme, Turkey. It was amazing! The balloon pilot even landed our basket on the back of a truck trailer.
7
u/shka328 Aug 02 '26
I did it last year, it's legit. You gotta get up at 3 am but the view is incredible

u/Quintilllius Aug 02 '26
Yes, went into one of those balloons at sunrise, it's one of the most exciting things to do in life!

There's one in Scotland every August in a place called Strathaven. It's a pretty cool thing to see
2
u/dntnsv Aug 03 '26
It is real. We were there a few years ago and went in the morning to watch all the balloons. It was exactly as in the video and it was a random day in September.

3
u/Kyrie_Blue Aug 02 '26
Real festival, the footage looks suuuuuper fake. My hometown had “Balloon Fest” which was the same thing, and you could never see the flash through the balloons that brightly.

Stayed in Cappadocia in the 'cave hotels'. One of the most fantastic places, I have visited.
For 2 consecutive days days, it rained and the balloons were not allowed to fly.
Was so bummed :-(
3
u/BeAstute2 Aug 02 '26
I wonder if we stayed at the same cave hotel. That whole region is just lovely. My group got up early for the hot air balloon ride and ended up sitting in a field for two hours waiting for clearance. Unfortunately, we never got it so the ride was canceled. We were so bummed, but from what we heard, there had been a lot of cancellations because of the weather. That was back in May.
2
u/majortrout4 Aug 02 '26
It snowed the day we were supposed to go out on the balloons. Forecast was nowhere near that when we left for the trip.
26
u/uwearclownshoes Aug 02 '26
My dad and I were driving back from Arizona and happened through the New Mexico version of this. It was great…balloons everywhere!
5
u/CultofCedar Aug 02 '26
From NYC but I go to the NM one annually. They have a group called “Dawn Patrol” that does basically what their name implies. Awesome to see, I even got some shots of them with the moon behind them last year! Pita waking up that early to catch it since you have to take a shuttle from the mall and I’m moving at like 4:30-5am to catch it lol.
2
u/uwearclownshoes Aug 02 '26
I plan to go back for it with my son one year. It was definitely an impressive display.
3
u/CultofCedar Aug 03 '26
All of NM is an impressive display, land of enchantment for a reason! Parents actually retired and bought the house sister had while she was there interning. All of our families go there together annually and explore around ABQ. Hope you do go and enjoy it! Easily one of my favorite spots in the country.

u/uwearclownshoes Aug 03 '26
I liked what I saw from I-40 through the state. Also liked the NE corner of AZ where we started out. I’ll be back out there.

I got to tour the underground cities there when my dad was stationed at Incirlik. Such a cool experience growing up!

I proposed to my fiance there. I also expected it to falsely advertised, but is truly beautiful!

I lived there for four years. During the tourist season you may see more than 100 balloons go up every sunrise, weather permitting. I would watch them rise with the sun while brushing my teeth standing on the roof top terrace.

When I was a kid, a hot air balloon had to make (what I thought) was an emergency landing in the field right next to my house. It looked rough but I thought it was cool at the time. Everyone was ok but it still looked a bit scary.
Come to find out decades later that that's just how they land all of the time. Randomly - in a field they can spot in a general area.

You have to be there early and it's expensive so we just stayed on the groung and went to the caves eith a tour
1
u/Important-Fudge4462 Aug 02 '26
Hot air balloons always seem crazy to me. Like you can't steer them right? How the fuck do you know where you're going it's gonna be safe to land?
1
u/renome Aug 03 '26
From what I understand, there's a ton of different currents going in all directions as you keep climbing. A skilled pilot can catch them by changing the altitude.
1
u/chocolatedimple Aug 02 '26
Got to experience riding the hot air balloons in Cappadocia. It was an absolutely magical experience
10/10 highlight of that trip.

I had booked an early morning balloon ride when I was in Göreme. After driving around for what seemed like forever looking for the perfect spot to launch from, we finally stopped and the tour guys start to set up and inflate the balloon. Only problem was the spot they chose had 1 little spindly tree located near the balloon and when it started inflating, it caught on the tree and ripped the silk. So, no balloon ride for us. 🤦🏻

Dawn around the pyramids outside of Mexico City is a similar scene. Absolutely worth it one time.

I watched this on an episode of Rick Steeve's Europe. It was pretty neat.

I am so glad we travelled in Turkey when we did. It was the early 90s, Cappadocia had maybe 3 balloons, and life there was a beautiful thing to observe. There was tourism, but it was only a small part of life there and people were genuinely kind and incredibly welcoming to us. I wonder what it is like now.

One of the things I wish I could experience. But no way In hell I am ever getting in that thing. Flying in a small basked with the help of hot air inside the baloon 😰

u/Ok-Illustrator-6153 Aug 03 '26
My wife and i got to do this. Unbelievable experience. We stayed at the museum hotel in cappadocia as well and got to watch them on the other days we were there. The pick up trucks chase behind the balloons so when they land, they land them right on the trailers being pulled behind the trucks. They bring you out to the middle of know where before dawn. Give you some Turkish coffee and snacks and you watch them as they set everything up to take off. They tend to cram though a dozen plus people in those though.
1
u/CapedCauliflower Aug 03 '26
I was there and didn't do it because of funds. That was a missed opportunity. It's breathtaking.
1
u/Stanztrigger Aug 03 '26
Wauw, what if something went wrong. Some balloons sideways. A few catch fire. Then some more. More then 100 deaths in 10 minuts.
Wauw 🤔 that would be something.

Literally almost every day there the tours drop you off. Then you have to get on a hot air balloon and ride one of them to get out of the middle of nowhere. Two weeks after we did that one of them plummeted from the sky killing all on board.
1
u/Sunrise_Sunflower Aug 03 '26
Beautiful! Reminds me of the balloon festival in Albuquerque, NM, USA

For those ones wondering if this is real, yes it is! It’s in Goreme, Türkiye 🇹🇷 BUT even though it’s a breathtaking scene in real life, the person who recorded has clearly edited the colors red and orange (I don’t know why as is not needed).

In the beginning of October, Albuquerque NM holds the largest hot air ballon festival in the world. Showcasing over 500 ballons launching at once, It is a truly unbelievable site. The differnet jet streams and winds at different altitudes in Albuquerque create a unique experience that enables the ballons to go around the city in a sqaure route.

Looks like Forza Horizon 5

Funny, Forza seems to have primed me the same way, even though I see a lot of them around my area all summer.

I've been to scenes just like this one, and what really sucks is you can never catch even a tenth of how beautiful it is through a camera.
This video is gorgeous, by the real thing I'm sure is absolutely breathtaking.

It looks great - the first series of Race Across the World (UK) has an episode in Turkey where two siblings stop there to see the balloons, and the cynical brother who had never seen the point of travel suddenly realised there were things worth seeing. Changed his life.
