Trabol or boltra. Ancient game played mostly in Flanders.

Shame, its good to keep tradition. Plus its like Curling, they are both drinking games.
8
u/TeamRedundancyTeam May 06 '26
Curling is a.. drinking game?
13
u/Schventle May 06 '26
Everythings a drinking game if its winter and you've got nothing to do but drink the beer you have on hand.
4
u/Suspicious-Appeal386 May 06 '26
Only reasons my high school friends join the local club, was simply so to could get older members to buy them the beers.
2
u/jarvisesdios May 06 '26
Name a single winter sport that didn't start with drunk people deciding to play a weird game in the cold while drunk.
As a hockey fan...

I can imagine this game originating in the cheese factory, with workers rolling out really old stinky cheese wheels.

It doesn't feel right unless the prize for winning is a wheel of cheese of approximately the same dimensions as whatever those things are called.
In a perfect world it would be fun to play with just cheese wheels but I'm not Scrooge McDuck who can afford that kind of cheddar.
2
u/sixthmontheleventh May 07 '26
Winner of the gloucestershire cheese run gets a wheel of cheese. But you have a higher risk of injury because it is people chasing a wheel of cheese down a steep hill.
211
u/DeliciousAct5748 May 05 '26
It's cheese curdling!
81
u/hwilliams0901 May 05 '26
I really dont know if this is a serious answer or not. LMFAO.
67
u/Razor1834 May 05 '26
It’s called that because it was originally played with wheels of cheese. Unfortunately the Swiss were found to be using a technique to make their wheels lighter which facilitated the transition to the playing pieces you see here today.

We call it Feather Bowling in Detroit. You can play it at the Cadieux Cafe (and get some great food and beer while you’re there).

My grandparents were Belgian immigrants and played this. They called it Rolle Bolle (pronounced rolly bowly).
They had a social club/bar that presumably played against other bars in the area in the past? There are a couple of courts left around our area in the parks.
Edit: my great grandpa was a pattern maker and made these bolles.

It’s called Feather Bowling!
This looks like it is taking place at the Cadieux Cafe in Detroit, MI. One of the only places outside of Belgium where you can find a full court like this.
Hope this helps!7
u/HannibalK May 05 '26
Having been there it's definitely not the Cadieux cafe.
4
u/jestr6 May 05 '26
Agreed, not the CC. Their lanes are all dirt.
2
u/klee4390 May 06 '26
Well it still behaves like feather bowling, the only time I did well at that game was when I rolled the “cheese block” and didn’t aim at all and somehow miracles happened. It was like if I tried at all the game would punish me and force me to let go of control and let the universe take over. Magical. Haha

There's a place in Mt. Clemens that has feather bowling. Bath city bistro

Are these wheels of cheese? This is definitely a game for ESPN8 The Ocho
8
u/CaptainPugwash75 May 05 '26
I’d play it if it was cheese. I fucking love cheese.
6
u/Trying2BNicenFailing May 05 '26
Yeah but it's not like you can eat the cheese....wouldn't it be difficult if you loved to eat cheese and you had massive wheels of cheese and you couldn't even eat them? Like if I loved the taste of basketballs I don't think I'd be playing basketball because I'd get too tempted to eat the basketballs whilst playing basketball? You know?

Just saw Carjitsu on ESPN the other day. The premonition for The Ocho was right on target.

Perhaps historically, but nowadays they're made from walnut wood. Crazy for me to see this online as this game (Jeu de bourle) is only played in a handful of villages in the region anymore

The way it’s trajectory was changed by the first object he hit, i don’t believe he could have planned for anything after that moment.

I’m with you probably not planned, but sometimes those end up being the best moments.

u/JohnGabin May 05 '26
It’s a flat ball game played in the north of France, Belgium. There’s different versions in Picardie, Flanders
5
u/recycleddesign May 05 '26
By flat ball you mean.. a wheel.
5
u/JohnGabin May 05 '26
In fact, they call that flat ball, that’s the littéral translation from french
2
u/recycleddesign May 05 '26
Well we can’t all be good at naming things, but it does look a pretty good game.

People are so knee-jerk against anyone calling out AI despite the rise of it lol and this video has all the signs. The filter, the hands, the blur, the convenient outcome…
12
u/Sylvarius May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26
it's just a real video with shitty editing tho, there are no signs of AI at all...
edit for the downvoting idiots : the sport club's instagram , with the actual video and many others...
5
u/mellowanon May 05 '26
this video is not AI. You have no idea what's an AI video and what's not.
I made another post about it here explaining it. The biggest easiest sign it's not AI is the camera work and the blur.

You've heard of curling, now get ready for hurling!
8
3
u/snapper1971 May 05 '26
Hurling is already a game. It's played in Ireland - it's played with a bat called a 'hurley' and a ball called a 'sliotar'. It's fast paced, kinetic and incredibly dangerous.
3
u/hmmmmmmmbop May 05 '26
Its a bit different to hurling-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurling

It's interesting just how many versions of "get close to the [centre or thing] and knock the other player's counters out of the way" there are. Did they have linked ancestry or is it just a common idea and a fun one to play?

How many different version of curling, bocce ball, whatever this is, are there?

The noise on the screen reminds me of something... are you sure those wheels don't have "drop and run" on them?

Lived in Detroit and spent time at the Cadieux Cafe. Is this a form of feather bowling?

u/lblacklol May 06 '26
I really fucking wish we could have had the real audio instead of this music. I love hearing people get amped over stuff like this. Videos of walk off homers and huge touchdowns at home stadiums gets me charged up

When you see the game for the first time and the most legendary play of said game, in one go. Speed run.

Cool, but…
Sigh. Now I just know the bots are going to flood Reddit with that one bocce shot that gets reposted over and over.

u/FixFun1959 May 06 '26
This looks like an incredible game to play on a brisk autumn Thursday night with the mates, a pint in one hand, somewhere walking distance from home.
Stepping back outside, a light buzz on, saying good evening to the boys as you all go your separate ways, turning your collar up, lighting a cig, and casually strolling home on a quiet street wet from the earlier drizzle, puddles reflecting the soft orange light of the street lamps.

I played a similar game near Angers France. Game called “Boules de Forts” and yes like the rest of the world it is an excuse to drink wine and roll these discs on an uneven surface. Good times!!!
