Oh good. I was worried about them. Some people were saying they were going to be killed for treason and other people were saying they skipped the anthem because the nation is in mourning. Wasn't sure what to believe, but glad they are safe.

Speaking as an Iranian I think it's interesting to note that all these women were wearing hijab last we saw them at the game.

Literally the instant they are granted asylum they take their hijab off. While some women wear it as a choice important to remember that for many/most it is not a choice.

I wish one day my mom and my sisters can leave the house dressed how they want without fear of repercussions

197

u/Anothermindlessanon Mar 10 '26

Dumb question: what about the rest? Do you know what happens to them?

75

u/Wrath7heFurious Mar 10 '26

My same question.

139

u/ol-gormsby Mar 10 '26

I understand that all of them were offered asylum, these are the ones who have accepted (so far).

110

u/MaeveOathrender Mar 10 '26

I saw a mention in an article of how these five 'slipped their regime minders' so maybe the others weren't able to. And now these five have gone, it's unlikely they'll have a chance even if they want to.

Not that that's the fault of the five, of course. It's a shit situation all around.

95

u/TakimaDeraighdin Mar 10 '26

They'll need to pass airport security in leaving, it'll be fairly simple to check each of them are leaving of their own free will. (And if the five who've already accepted asylum have reported that others are being prevented from seeking asylum, that will happen, for both team and travelling staff.)

Keep in mind that taking that offer very likely increases the risk to their families back in Iran, so I'd not assume that all of them will be in a position to take up that option, even if they'd want to in a vacuum.

There was another post here that claimed they were *all* at a secret, secure location which is where Tony Burke met them and signed off the first 5 for humanitarian visas.

u/simulacrum81 Mar 10 '26 edited Mar 10 '26

I believe I read that the AFP organised individual one-on-one conversations with each of the remaining players. They may have family in Iran whose lives would be threatened if they defected now, so they might have chosen to go back for their sake.

13

u/ChepaukPitch Mar 10 '26

What a shitty country. Any country whose citizens are afraid to do anything not because it is wrong but because they fear for their family and friends is a failed country. Like even if you do something that is really horrible or treasonous it is you who should be punished, not your family. On one hand America’s war is illegal and sets really horrible precedent for the rest of the world. On the other hand, US at least bombed a few people who 100% deserved it.

12

u/simulacrum81 Mar 10 '26 edited Mar 10 '26

Dude you don’t know the half of it. According to their beliefs virgins who die will go to paradise so young girls sentenced to death (for something like speaking out against the regime) are routinely raped prior to execution to prevent their souls reaching paradise.

The AFP don't fuck around, if there's a suggestion that these women are being held against their will, or threatened by their minders, the AFP will be up in the minders shit in no time. Weapons drawn if need be.

They’re going to be interviewed privately one on one by the AFP before they leave to make sure but some might worry for their family.

I imagine it will be on the down low for their personal safety.

‘Edit: Wondered same question. Maybe not all mentioned or photographed for family reasons? I hope other take the offer.

10

u/Lingonberry_Born Mar 10 '26

Their families were threatened so they've been too afraid to seek asylum. They have been offered, so we'll see if they take it up but it's an impossible choice to make, either way.

I think they're going to have to go back. It's a tough decision no matter what

used to work at the same floor with a female Iranian phd student, she never wore it once. These women are thriving out here.

4

You’re very measured in your “many/most” qualification… I think the picture says it all.

I hope their families are safe too.

3

Thank you for giving your perspective.

I do wonder when we will mature as a society past the point of egg shell walking when it comes to this.

Case in point. Id love to say more but i dont want reddit to crack down on me being Islamophobic by criticizing how the faith regularly treats women.

5

u/braydzmate Mar 10 '26

It’s fantastic that normal people are waking up to these Islamic regimes.

Not singing the national anthem started as a protest against the regime to point out that this is not our “national” anthem.

An anchor on national TV called their action treason during wartime. So you can guess what would have happened to them if they went back.

I’m glad they are safe and hope their families are safe as well.

42

u/_oh_joy_ Mar 09 '26

Not just any someone, that dude was from the Iranian state media. He wanted to brand them as traitors mark them on their foreheads and punish them

10

u/Opus_723 Mar 10 '26

Maybe this is a stupid question, but... Soccer teams have more than five people, right? What's happening with the rest of them?

7

u/Dragon_Bidness Mar 10 '26

I haven't seen anything definitive but the prevailing thoughts seem to be that these 5 were the only ones able to slip away from their chaperones or these are the only women who accepted the offer of asylum.

Another one defected, so now it’s six. It’s a tough choice tho-state TV threatened them but they probably have loved ones back home & might risk the chance of being killed because they can’t bear to be away from their families

I would love to hear their take on what going on in Iran.

220

u/4DollarsALB Mar 09 '26

They are probably going to keep a very low profile to try and keep their family safe (their family is already at risk).

Most of my family/friends are in Iran and I am not a public figure and even I try to keep a low profile on social media for this reason.

29

u/JoeSugar Mar 10 '26

I’m sorry you and the Iranian people are having to experience this kind of life. Hopefully, this war ends soon and Iran can return to the amazingly vibrant society it was before the Islamic Revolution. Iran and the Persian people have contributed so much to the world’s cultural richness, yet so much of that has been destroyed and often forgotten. Half a century of terror and a the culture of hate and death fomented by the mullahs in power has got to end.

Iran, before the revolution, was the crown jewel of the Middle East and the regime has brought nothing but death, destruction and hate to the entire region.

Most Redditors are too young to have a strong sense of just how evil they have been through the years.

I loathe Donald Trump, his administration and what he has done to the US. But I cannot believe the number of people who are so full of hate and rage towards him and MAGA that they are literally hoping he fails and the regime remains. I just cannot understand how any sane human being could possibly hope for anything less than a quick and thorough elimination of the regime and that the Iranian people are free to form their own government that serves its citizens instead of terrorizing and killing them. Also, it has a very real possibility of allowing for peace to take hold in the future.

It may be too much to hope that the IRGC would face a day of judgment and justice and that Trump and his merry band of goons would quickly get their just dues quickly after. But I hope and pray that is what happens.

Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthi’s and many other offshoot terrorists organizations need to lose their funding and all those billions of dollars could be spent on returning Iran to relative normalcy. The entire world would benefit.

11

u/4DollarsALB Mar 10 '26

Well said

9

u/yeahyeahyeah188 Mar 10 '26

I don’t think anyone is hoping trump fails, more that this is not just a slam dunk, easy fix like he’s making it out to be. The US and Israel also bombed a girls school 😭

I don’t think any middle eastern regime change war has gone well for the US and all it seems to do is support the military industrial complex, kill and displace innocent civilians and result in more destabilisation and anti western extremism.

All that said, I’ve been worried sick about these Iranian women, and I feel sick thinking about the approx 15 who were too scared for their families to seek asylum. Pray for Iran.

I’d imagine they dislike the regime and have found the persecution, crack downs and interference in the rights of women very difficult. I’d also imagine they find the bombing of their country and the likelihood of civilian deaths as a result also distressing.

Iranian women's soccer players given asylum after Trump speaks with Australian PM

WASHINGTON/SYDNEY, March 10 (Reuters) - Australia on Tuesday agreed to provide visas to five of Iran's women's soccer team players to stay in the country after they sought asylum fearing persecution in their home nation.

The announcement came after U.S. President Donald Trump said he had ‌spoken to Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese about the Iran women's soccer team in Australia following reports that the players had requested asylum.

....

Soccer's global players' union FIFPRO said on Monday there were serious concerns for the welfare of the Iran team after they were labelled for refusing to sing their national anthem before a game.

The players' decision to stand in silence during Iran's anthem before their first match against South Korea was labelled by a commentator on Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting as the "pinnacle of dishonour".

Iranian media quoted Farideh Shojaei, vice president for women's affairs at the Iranian Football Federation, as saying the team had left the hotel through the back door with the police.

"We have contacted the embassy, the football federation, the foreign ministry and anywhere possible to see what will happen," she said. "We have even spoken with the families of these five players.”

156

u/No-Target2243 Mar 10 '26

"The announcement came after U.S. President Donald Trump said he had spoken to Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese about the Iran women's soccer team in Australia following reports that the players had ‌requested asylum."

Trump as usual trying to take credit for what others have done.

101

u/Tribe303 Mar 10 '26

Yeah, Australia was going to do this anyway. Trump is such a disgusting man.

22

u/clippertonbrigadier Mar 10 '26

Our foreign minister, Penny Wong, was on a political chat show on Sunday morning and was asked about it, and you could just tell by how evasive but sympathetic she was being that it was well and truly in the works (noting that yes I’m aware it wasn’t her portfolio, but she’d definitely have been aware of the plans).

52

u/LindaMVic Mar 10 '26

The arrangements were being put in place well before Trump put his oar in. Australians, however, don't bleat every action to the world, especially when it's politically sensitive and still in progress.

Piss off, Trump, and stay out of our business.

9

u/Tribe303 Mar 10 '26

I'm Canadian, and our 'trade war' with China that was recently in the news as being resolved, was all Trump's fault from 2019. He's an idiot who fucks up EVERYTHING he touches. He's worse than incompetent. Just being incompetent would be an improvement.

2

Meanwhile he himself has put Iranians on the list of nationalities that the US is currently issuing NO visas to and his administration has capped annual asylum cases to around 7500 when it’s historically been around 70,000-130,000 going all the way back to Clinton and Bush.

It's so funny how often the ''''''''anti fascists'''''''' side with actual fascists.

9

u/Mobile-Bar7732 Mar 10 '26

I consider myself anti fascist however I don't believe Trump is going to leave the country in any better condition than before the war.... I mean "special operation".

Here's why:

Trump signed a deal with the Taliban to withdraw troops and allow the Taliban to take back the country. This reversed what troops fought all those years.

United States–Taliban deal

I hope I'm wrong, but knowing the bankruptor's past history proves otherwise.

They don’t have the same motivations as you. They’re not trying to liberate Iranians. They’re trying to distract from the Epstein files and the fact that Trump is a child rapist.

2

u/AtomicSymphonic_2nd Mar 10 '26

Theres still no smoking gun on that from the files released so far. Trump had plenty of associations with Epstein, but nothing yet in terms of a recorded act of sex with a minor or trafficking a minor.

Hopefully that may change soon, but I just don’t have much faith in that… it’s not like it’s gonna convince Senate Republicans to convict Trump if an opportunity for impeachment rolls around. 😞

Wondering if their families back home would face any consequences?

98

u/4DollarsALB Mar 09 '26

Unfortunately very likely yes. The Iranian government even says it in the part above that's quoted.

My guess is they won't do anything while the war is going on for PR reasons but if they are still in power after then yes their families are at risk. I can't imagine the thought process and how hard a decision it must have been for these girls

23

u/Dotcaprachiappa Mar 09 '26

I mean they really didn't say anything, that's just standard procedure normally. I have no doubt they'll do something to them, but they're not gonna be stupid enough to say it publicly.

Trump is a fucking idiot. Thankfully, he didn't post about this situation earlier as he could have completely ruined their chances of staying here. The minister pictured in the middle held a press conference this morning and thanked his shadow minister and the Australian media for keeping this situation out of the headlines as he had asked, in order for the women to escape and for their families to hopefully get to safety. It was always going to happen; our government was just trying to keep it on the down low for obvious reasons.

5

u/car0yn Mar 10 '26

Yes, the thought that Trump made any difference is ridiculous. Tony Burke is a good guy and this outcome has been worked on since the girls didn’t sing on the pitch. Love seeing them with their hair free.

11

u/MigitAs Mar 09 '26

Absolute unit framemogging everyone

7

u/Ballistic_86 Mar 10 '26

May I ask a fair but controversial question? Are these women special as compared to the millions of other Iranians? I’m just confused because DHS is shooting people in my home state for protecting vulnerable immigrants, but MAGA has been all about Iranian protesters and now these players. It just makes my head spin there is so much racism toward Somali citizens and so much love for the athletes?

19

u/super_dragon Mar 10 '26

They are viewed as political dissidents. Regular refugees are just viewed as poor, a strain on social services

15

u/derpyhero Mar 10 '26

Ignoring the politics, it's different because they were already in Australia with a legal visa. It's far easier to apply for and be granted refugee status in Australia if you have entered legally and apply onshore, as opposed to applying from outside Australia, or applying onshore after entering illegally.

4

u/Ballistic_86 Mar 10 '26

Trump said that if Australia didn’t accept them that the US would. Meaning they would be on the other side of the planet and offered asylum. And I’m pretty sure the protesters that have been attacked and killed in Iran would probably say they have, equally or more so, stood up to the regime.

This is all just smoke and mirrors, hearts and minds to further convince Americans that the US are the good guys and we are helping Iran by bombing it.

If this were anything more than that they could have offered the Iranian sailors asylum near Sri Lanka instead of blowing up a ship with no munitions.

2

u/_its_really_me_ Mar 10 '26

Fun fact: there were Australian sailors onboard the US sub that sunk the ship off Iran.

8

u/sloppyrock Mar 10 '26

I'm fairly sure the war started when they were in Australia for the Asian Womens football cup.

Some or all of the team refused to sing their anthem before one of their matches. Subsequent matches they did. Likely under duress.

It is entirely possible they would face persecution if they return.

7

u/PublicSeverance Mar 10 '26 edited Mar 10 '26

Australia is a different country answers all your questions.

You watch the news, this was on the news. Media coverage accelerated the drama.

These players very publicly had an impossible choice. 1. Claim asylum to avoid Iranian prison and their family gets punished, or 2. return home and they go to prison. The leadership of their country has called for their death due to treason.

Every day for the last 2 weeks they have been playing sport on international TV with that hanging over their heads. It's a ticking clock.

Sophie's Choice was a hugely popular movie a long time ago. A mother has to pick which one of her kids will survive and the other dies. It's not that different to a Saw movie. Anyone can put themselves in the shoes of the players and it makes emotions.

You can also consider the opposite from the other players. The other female players have made the choice to return to Iran and go to prison during war time.

You are watching young female athletes who are walking towards their death, live, on TV, because they made a choice for something relatively simple of "not-singing". Wrong place, wrong time.

I hope you can see that is a different situation to the scenario you present. Stakes are much higher and immediate. More than half their teammates are probably going to be executed, and the families of these 5 are going to be targeted for retribution.

I hope these women live long and healthy lives. And that if any of them are gay they get to be as gay as they wanna be.

And what about all of the Iranians that aren't famous.

I'm a little tired of the rich and famous getting special treatment.

It’s amazing that in this day and age as women we still do not have a say in how we choose to dress and what we do with our bodies

Well done Australia

In 2026 people are still treated as property of the state without free will. That's medieval sh*t.

When will it ever end?

1

u/MarcelPappas Mar 10 '26

Who's that dude on the far right?

1

u/Funny-Paramedic9034 Mar 10 '26

Man, what a relief to see this update. The rumors swirling around them were getting pretty dark, ngl. Glad they made it out and got somewhere safe. Hope their loved ones can find a way out too.

1

u/NumberOld229 Mar 10 '26

Don't worry, Australian media will find a way to paint it as the worst decision ever made. They'd hate curing cancer if the ALP were in power when it happened.

I went to the game last night between Philippines and Iran. There was a weird tension at the end. I had a sneaking suspicion the government had planned something to back them up and grab them.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '26

Thats seriously amazing.. Good to hear they are safe. I hope one day they can go back to their own country and enjoy life (finger crossed). Tbh good for Australia for taking stand and keep these players safe. Australia also did amazing job to give aslyum to Afgan women cricket players. When taliban banned women sports and they were hunting these women players.Former Australian cricket player and now broadcaster Mel jones worked round the clock with Dr Catherine Ordway to get these players cross borders and take aslyum in Aus.

u/Frexulfe Mar 10 '26

Good!

I am disgusted by the general mood of "Oh, that country is a tyrany, we have to bomb it" and then "nope, the country is perfectly fine, no asylum for you".

In 2024 the European Court of Justice decided that ANY afghan woman has the right to asylum, they do not need any more proof than being a women. This was triggered because Austria was insisting that it was perfectly okay to send the afghan women to Afghanistan.
