No, it's just that sometimes my eye balls leak with salt water, nothing to do with the video.

I hope it's ok to link, I share this every time I see a video like this, but it's through e-NABLE! Super easy to find local chapters and there are dozens of different limb designs including feet. Such a great community <3

"Enabling The Future – A Global Network Of Passionate Volunteers Using 3D Printing To Give The World A "Helping Hand." https://enablingthefuture.org/

u/Any-Assumption-3265 Jan 07 '26

My daughter has a limb difference and I was scrambling through the comments hoping for more info! Never stop sharing it. I appreciate you.

84

u/SeeSharpist Jan 07 '26 edited Jan 07 '26

Hope it helps! I've printed several prototypes of their designs, if you need any help or have questions feel free to reach out and I'll help however I can. You can likely find a local chapter through their site as well, it's a great community!

EDIT: thank you for the award, kind stranger!

8

u/changefromPJs Jan 07 '26

I do have a question - what type of material is usually used for prototypes and for final prosthesis?

8

u/SeeSharpist Jan 07 '26

PLA is my go to, it's cheap, easy to print, and there are tons of colors. Something rougher like PETG might be better durability wise, but these are meant to be easy to replace if a child breaks it, especially since kids grow so quickly and need larger models over time.

I'd probably choose an improved PLA+ and just make sure that the prints have sufficient infill to make it more sturdy once the sizes and fits are finalized

2

u/BappoChan Jan 08 '26

Is the grip strength ok? I have an adult friend who may be interested in something like this, but seeing he’s not a kid we might use a company that does metal printing and cutting for these designs.

3

u/SeeSharpist Jan 08 '26

Oh these can all totally be scaled up, you probably shouldn't be doing pull ups with them :) but you can always print 100% infill to make them solid plastic and they'd be pretty strong, just fine for day to day life. Printing in plastic first would let you get the sizes dialed in and being an adult, that'd probably set them up for life, sizing wise!

2

u/local_agitator Jan 07 '26

I'm visiting lombok Indonesia and there's a guy that works the gate to Tanjung Aan Beach https://share.google/WIV5EgZOKlCzrkjBj that is missing both hands near the elbow.

I leave in a couple days but will go by there tomorrow and can ask a local guide who speaks English if he has seen or tried anything like this.

If he's keen, I can ask a print shop to print one if there are plans anyone can share.

What inputs are required from the gate guy? Other than interest? Measurements etc?

2

u/SeeSharpist Jan 07 '26

Kind of you to think of them, if you check the site link in my original comment, it has all of their models as well as instructions for measuring for a specific person. Essentially taking measurements of a certain parts of the limb to begin which will help you size the model files correctly

2

u/local_agitator Jan 08 '26

If only we do away with the isms and schisms. Sad really. By now you would think we would evolved into a greater species.

9

u/Nat-Luv Jan 07 '26 edited Jan 07 '26

I 100% agree, but I also need to say "The Isms and Schisms" is a great name for a band or an EP.

6

u/MrDrSirLord Jan 07 '26

Replace them with tisms and we'd probably be set lol, folks on the spectrum statistically typically have a stronger sense of "fair and justice".

Maybe that's due to always being treated unfairly though that ingrains a sense of wanting better for everyone?

Idk I'm not a psychologist lol I'm just the patient that keeps reading up on what I hear.

3

u/Sermagnas3 Jan 07 '26

There is no evolution as natural selection has been affected by genetic defects being preserved by modern medicine and passed down. The same happens to culture, it's artificially preserved preventing growth and change

2

u/toughfoot Jan 08 '26

Deep! Agreed.

2

u/FearTheSpoonman Jan 07 '26

Although a kids book series, Lemony Snicket did a great job showing this in Series of Unfortunate Events. The "Schism" is all it's referred to but ends up just being petty differences that matter little but lead to catastrophes in the end.

2

u/jubtheprophet Jan 07 '26

Our species hasnt really been around very long. And we've only had "society" for maybe 12k years max. Theres been no time to evolve in any major way, we progress too fast

→ More replies (2)

6

u/koticgood Jan 07 '26

Our issue as a species is that we are not able to be truly good

I don't subscribe to this at all.

Our problems are institutional.

Everyone has their own estimates and definition of "good", but for me it's like 8-20% are "evil", 20-60% are a reflection of society, and 15-35% are "good".

And, of course, even the "evil" ones are a product of nurture/society, just not a reflection of society.

I think you can easily get to a place where, as you put it, our species is truly good.

It's just hard to implement a system in which the people in charge are those that are "good". Positions of power in a poorly designed system are going to draw bad actors.

I think it's easy to forget that human civilization just began. 10k years is literally nothing, not just comparing to some abstract cosmic timeline of billions of years -- Dinosaurs ruled for over 100 million years.

Society will continue to progress and regress, ever so slowly improving over time.

u/EmptyLabs Jan 07 '26

Well yeah, there is safety in having more than you need. It helps you protect the people you care about. Seeing people living without the things you have exaggerates the importance of that safety net and will make you more likely to hoard what's yours, in fear of becoming like them.

The issue is that the people most people care about are usually just immediate family these days and often times not even that. We need a return to community and neighborliness if we want to revive the humanity of humanity.

3

u/NoFeetSmell Jan 07 '26

Kado the right answer, its an anime about a alien ship. They come down and are met with Japan's top mediator. They bring a few cubes that can solve world hungry and the energy crisis. But its like 3 cubes for food and 4 cubes for energy. With 7 continents can humanity share these resources without warring over them?

In a century or two this is going to be a super difficult thing teachers will have to explain to their students. This made up concept of food and housing scarcity.

"Was there enough food for everyone?" Yes "Then why..." Because money was...

2

u/idiot-prodigy Jan 07 '26

Our issue as a species is that we are not able to be truly good.

Naw. This planet has all of the resources to meet every single person's needs, but not enough resources to meet any one person's greed.

It is that simple.

2

u/zylosophe Jan 07 '26

2

u/ThomasVetRecruiter Jan 07 '26

I long ago stopped worrying about trying to solve humanity.

All we can do is try to help those we are able to help.

5

u/WedCornet Jan 07 '26

We may have the resources but not everyone has the ability to obtain them. That's why we work so we can get money to trade for them. Someone has to extract resources and turn it into something that the average person can consume, and nobody can be expected to do that for free.

18

u/Ruruya Jan 07 '26

If we're talking about basics, like food, water and shelter. It's not expensive to have agricultural adjustments, water distribution and environmentally suitable shelter provided.

It definitely isn't done for free, but we can definitely budget for it. I just did a guick google and globally we spent about 3 trillion on entertainment/media in 2024. I think we can spend a couple billion on fixing world hunger.

3

u/Wonderbrite Jan 07 '26

I hear you but it’s definitely more than “a couple billion.” I just checked and recent UN estimates suggest $90-93 billion annually is needed to reduce hunger and malnutrition for 700 million people by 2030. And it’s not quite as simple as just allocating money, either. It takes time, work, training, empowerment, long-term investment in local capacity building.

So I agree completely and I’m all for this, but I feel like reducing it to “just spend a few billion on this stuff instead of entertainment” isn’t giving quite the full picture

Edit: typo and wording

9

u/Ruruya Jan 07 '26

100% agree. It was hyperbolic, to show the disparity in how we're spending money.

But I believe you do see my point. If we even just spent 1/16th of what we spent on entertainment (187.5 billion) we could adequately achieve what the UN estimated.

Its just disappointing to see what we've done with our time and resources in our world today.

3

u/GimmeSomeSugar Jan 07 '26

We don't actually need to 'cut' anything or go without;

Provisioning decent living standards (DLS) for 8.5 billion people would require only 30% of current global resource and energy use, leaving a substantial surplus for additional consumption, public luxury, scientific advancement, and other social investments.

From the research study "How much growth is required to achieve good lives for all? Insights from needs-based analysis".

2

u/Wonderbrite Jan 07 '26

Yeah, I’m completely on board. Part of the problem is fragmentation, there are thousands of charities doing piecemeal work when we need a direct and coordinated effort on multiple levels. Which is difficult, and as you pointed out there’s a MASSIVE monetary incentive for those trillion dollar corporations to make us not care about this and keep the money flowing elsewhere. There just isn’t a single coordinated body doing this well at scale. I think what actually moves the needle is pressure on governments to treat this as a policy priority rather than leaving it to fragmented charities. The UN World Food Program is probably the only thing that even comes close.

8

u/_Armanius_ Jan 07 '26

$90B-$93Bil is about 10 times less what US is spending on military.

2

u/Mr_Derpy11 Jan 07 '26

Yeah, but imagine if everyone earned roughly the same amount of money. Imagine if the wage disparity between CEOs and employees was limited to a maximum of 2x - 3x instead of 1.000+x

Imagine if we didn't have groups of individuals controlling resources and making them near inaccessible to others, but instead shared our resources.

Imagine if instead of grocery stores throwing away literal metric tons of edible food every single day, we just had food available to those who need it.

Did you know that depending on where you are, stealing expired food from a grocery store's garbage is illegal and will get you fined or thrown in jail? That's just indefensible, a system that puts people in a position where they are not allowed to feed themselves is a fundamentally broken system.

→ More replies (1)

9

u/SalvatasM Jan 07 '26 edited Jan 07 '26

Not everyone is able to obtain that because the system called capitalism is making us be that way. There is more than enough resources to give every person that is missing a limb a prosthetic.

Those people with the money just much rather hoard it for all eternity so it piles up more and more without either using it to help the economy or actually do good with it - helping animals, homeless or severely injured people either from pointless war or any kind of horrible accident.

No one wants you to work for free it’s about giving what you can and taking what you need. Remind me though, what exactly is someone like Elon giving - in comparison to the amounts he is taking from those people actually working for the things they need?

3

u/Optimal_Anything3777 Jan 07 '26

nobody can be expected to do that for free.

and no one said that.............................

3

u/Blackintosh Jan 07 '26

7

u/NoConfusion9490 Jan 07 '26

1% of 1% would probably be more than enough.

2

u/Spire_Citron Jan 07 '26

And adults, too. They're no less deserving, and I'm sure helping people be more functional is an investment that pays off for society anyway.

2

u/-Apocralypse- Jan 07 '26

Apparently insurance companies don't like giving kids intricate prosthetics, because they outgrow them so fast.

But there are networks of volunteers teaching eachother how to measure a prosthetic for kids, share access to printing models and then volunteers print these at home on their 3D printer whenever a request comes in through the network that is in their area. My partner saw their booth at an IT conference and decided to join. (I think the one he saw is the e-NABLE network, but there are more.)

Still, I can recommend healthcare for all. It doesn't make sense not to have this as a nation.

Disabled people often want accommodations in other ways. For many people a wheelchair is going to be more comfortable than a prosthetic, many people prefer sign language to implants, etc. There are tradeoffs and everyones situation is different. More ramps and accessible public transportation and elevators and other social technologies related to city design are vastly more important.

If you care about technology for disabled people one of the ways you can help is by looking into right to repair laws and changing the DMCA to support jailbreaking (they put paywalls on wheelchairs and implants and prosthetic limbs as well, these days)

3

u/skeetersammer Jan 07 '26

Nobody should be denied this tech for free

23

u/DeadlyRanger21 Jan 07 '26

Especially when its so simple. I understand electric prosthesises not being free. But something this simple? Let's be fr. This costs like 2 bucks max

25

u/AdventClobe Jan 07 '26

Let's also be real, no price should be put on a person for lacking a limb, mechanical or electrical. If you make room for insurance grifters to make excuses such as differences and technicalities they WILL. if it costs someone 2 bucks to make, it "costs" the insurance company 10000x that for no real reason other than profit. It's just the wrist. Moving it one way opens the hand, moving it the other closes it. There's cords moving from the wrist up to the fingers so they open and close together. How does it work?

21

u/tahlyn Jan 07 '26

Your fingers are controlled by tendons in your forearm. As long as you don't lose too much of your forearm, the tendons can still flex even if no fingers are there. These sorts of contraptions work by utilizing the tendons in your arm that would have controlled fingers.

Put your hand on the area above your wrist and move your fingers and you'll see what I mean.

14

u/MODAITestBot Jan 07 '26

Pretty sure bending the wrist closes the hand. These are not complex enough to use the finger tendons. All the fingers close at the same time.

4

u/spadge_badger Jan 07 '26

This is absolutely incorrect.

2

u/YouToot Jan 07 '26

Ah but if you don't think about it at all, it makes a lot of sense.

6

u/7th_Cuil Jan 07 '26

Bruh, your explanation is way too complicated. Nothing is connected to individual tendons. She operates the hand by bending her wrist. She does not have a hand, but she does have a wrist.

Genuinely curious and I'm hoping someone super knowledgeable sees this and replies, how exactly does such a device work?

I understand, to some degree, that the muscles in the arm/forearm flex and that causes the fingers to open and close but what sort of a mechanism converts the flexing of the muscles into an opening/closing of the fingers? Can similar motions be used to control each finger individually?

Like for example if I saw some wires, motors and a battery I can at least picture how all of that can be combined to achieve this or better but for something that's purely mechanical, I'm fascinated.

How is she controlling the fingers?

1

u/Mars_Volcanoes Jan 07 '26

This is a myo-electric prothesis...At it looks as an advanced tech one. Here in Québec / Canada where I live, it ranges from 30 000 to 50 000$..But a heart transplant or important operation is totally free except some like Physio, Psychologist etc, b...This prothesis is not reimbursed at all except about 2000$ which is a joke...

I hate to shatter everyone's illusions but my son was given one of these years ago and he quickly found that they are pretty much useless. Sadly. The fingers are activated by bending the wrist which then puts tension on plastic cords attached to each finger inside the hand. This action does not provide enough strength to grip anything heavier than the table tennis ball we see in this video. What they actually need is a bunch of small motors fitted to each cord to provide enough tension to grip everyday items. But then you have the issue of powering these motors and a way to activate them when needed. They are 3D printed so are very cheap to make but unfortunately are not really usable for anything practical. It's a start though I guess.
