HeLp Why does it seem like most people hate this show? Besides the first part of the last episode, I thought it was pretty good. I really enjoyed it. Am I stupid or are they stupid? Are WE stupid? Who's stupid?
24
u/Phoenixskull295 1d ago
I mean the reviews and viewer retention makes it seem like the general audience liked it quite well lol
164
u/Petunianator 1d ago
There's a very loud minority of redditors who hate it, most people do not lol
11
u/mangosbangos 20h ago
Well it's rather more than just hate, I've seen all over social media a lot of people giving a ton of valid criticism towards the show especially when it comes to being a green lantern adaptation, which isn't one of it's strongest pillars at the moment
6
0
u/Petunianator 14h ago
Which is a loud minority. Most people don't know dick about Green Lantern and most GL fans also liked it. I thought it was funny that the Green Lantern board, where it's seemed fairly critical, had a poll up and even there the core users of the board voted overwhelmingly positively lol
Also for the love of Christ social media isn't real life or hard data, literally all measurable information indicates it's been well received
4
u/mangosbangos 12h ago
Just because you've seen some gl fans like it doesn't mean everyone else did, as someone who knows his green lantern stuff I generally liked the show completely but it still has it's core issues, and this is something I can confidently say not because I'm the only person on the internet who thinks like this nor the minority it's everywhere, so constantly blaming comic book fans feels a bit ignorent in this whole debacle in my opinion
0
u/Petunianator 12h ago
Every single piece of measurable data indicates it's been well received, not least of which being the streaming numbers which are outstanding. The largest available sample groups are also positive. There's zero, literally zero, quantifiable evidence to the contrary. That doesn't mean EVERYONE liked it, but it absolutely means that a very significant majority did.
-1
u/mangosbangos 12h ago
I feel like this doesn't need to be said but I don't think a show having high viewer rate means the show is flawless, stranger things's last season had decent viewership but wasn't necessarily a flawless season
2
u/Petunianator 12h ago
When did anyone in this conversation use the word "flawless"
Stranger Things was dropped in two chunks while Lanterns had a traditional release schedule which saw viewership increase week over week for the entire duration of the season
-1
u/mangosbangos 11h ago
Even so my point is that just because there's a strong viewership doesn't necessarily mean every majority of people liked it, you can still have issues with a show even with statistics shown like this
2
u/Petunianator 11h ago
If you continually break down groups into smaller and smaller subsections, yes you'll eventually reach small groups where a majority disliked it. That group would inherently be a very small minority of the total numbers of viewers. The problem isn't that people are criticizing it, it's that some of the people criticizing it are adamantly refusing to engage with reality and insisting that the show was an overall failure that most people in the audience disliked, which is very obviously untrue
1
u/mangosbangos 11h ago
Although I still don't necessarily agree on the minority part because believe me it's everywhere, but I do wholeheartedly agree that the show was overall decent writing wise, despite the glaring issues it contains, which is a lot

u/LoquatOk8501 18h ago
How would you know if the minority is those who dislike it opposed to those who like it on Reddit where are you getting your stats ?
-1
u/Petunianator 14h ago
Viewership has grown every week, it's what like the third most successful new show launched on HBO streaming ever, it's scored well on IMDB including the supposedly divisive finale, even on reddit if it's like a general television or film board it's been pretty universally praised, and while this is anecdotal I've not talked to a single person in real life who didn't like it. It's been wildly, clearly well received.
-3
u/AsparagusSad5879 21h ago
Loud minority of Redditors?, brother every social media has been on a bandwagon of criticism towards this show???????
3
u/iron-wyvern 16h ago
Social media is not really life. They are still a minority.
It seems every single DC release has a very vocal minority of no life losers that shit on the project, no matter how good it is. Whether it's Snyder fans or comic book purists or both. They are loud enough that it makes any project seem "controversial" if you're chronically online, but they're still a minority. If you go outside and talk to real people, it's hard to see Lanterns as anything other than a massive success.
Imagine if every single MCU project was met with the same level of criticism and hate for evey little creative choice they make...
DC fans are miserable, sad people. And it pains me as a DC fan...
0
u/Petunianator 14h ago
Yeah except it hasn't. Even on reddit the general television and film boards have been wildly positive. But I would imagine a suspiciously young account with two posts probably knows that lol

It's just not what I was looking for from a green lantern show, it's a good show, but I just wish there was more action
12
u/Conejoformerwars 23h ago
I will say
It makes sense they wouldn’t blow their Green Lantern action on this adult drama when they can save to put it in the big budget e for everyone movies
13
14
u/Petunianator 23h ago edited 23h ago
This is 100% a reasonable take. The annoying ones are the people who wanted more constructs and then disingenuously try to pretend EVERYTHING about is bad because of that, which can be seen in some of the comments here lol
5
u/Alexhite 18h ago
I think action for green lanterns is particularly expensive since it is always very complicated CGI. We know how Disney plus shows got panned for using mediocre CGI for superhero powers. So I think in concern of that they decided to keep the action minimal.
0
u/LoquatOk8501 18h ago
Then why make the show if you don’t have the budget to do the things the characters do in every single comic…
Make a true detective style grounded show with characters that don’t require cgi like the question or someone in the bat family ..
calling it lanterns best believe lantern fans expected to see more constructs and action.
0
u/jono9898 15h ago
Because if the show does well, a miracle happens, it gets another season and a bigger budget,
1
u/LoquatOk8501 13h ago
Right “hey let’s do a lantern show but we don’t have the budget for it so let’s do it anyway and maybe if it does well we can get a bigger budget for the next season”
Brilliant
1
u/jono9898 13h ago
Or, “we want to introduce the Lantern corp to the DCEU but don’t have the budget for a movie or a show, well we need to get the stink of the old movie off so let’s do a show with more detective elements, and more character study than big budget cgi elements, what? LoquatOk8501 doesn’t think it makes sense? Huh? The high ratings prove people like the show regardless of the budget and this can help with more Lantern projects in the future? Oh he still doesn’t like it just nuke the entire project”
2
u/laix_ 10h ago
Its basically a down to earth buddy cop mystery show, that uses the character names from GL for the most part. You could have used entirely new names for the characters, and cut all of the actual uses of the ring, and not much would actually change in the show

u/Spegynmerble Jonkling my shit rn 8h ago

I loved it. I enjoyed every episode, even episode 3, which was peak cinema.
That being said, I understand the criticisms. Being a GL show, more aliens should have been involved. It felt too grounded, like it was afraid (no pun intended) to show its comic-booky side. I was so hyped for the Manhunter, being the predecessor of the GL Corps, but the reveal was somewhat lacking
11
u/Kalbi84 22h ago
It was good but it wasn't near the "best show I've ever seen" opinions I've seen floating around. I feel like the characters were well-written and their arcs were compelling, and the take on the traditional superhero genre was interesting, BUT that being said... there was too little "green-lantern-ing" for me, and some of the moments seemed illogical given how powerful the rings are. And the pacing was dreadful sometimes, I don't think some of the scenes should've been that long or even left in.
4
u/Kalbi84 22h ago
One more thing to add, I think all the lanterns were PERFECTLY cast (Guy included), and Hal's dialogues were the most fun to hear. I'm neutral to Sinestro since there was so little of him. I'm split on Zoe, sheriff and sheriff's son, as some of their moments were good, while others felt a bit stiff.

u/VonBrewskie R.I.P Kevin Conroy & Arleen Sorkin 1d ago
Oh I really enjoyed it. I've always really liked Green Lantern. The comics, but especially the cartoons from when I was growing up. I think it's an interesting direction to take them in. They are intergalactic police officers after all. I like that they're digging into some of the moral ambiguity the Lanterns have historically faced. Makes for good television, imo. The Lantern stuff was fun too. The actual manifestations and such.

Social media isn’t the real world. The people you’re seeing vehemently hating this show are the extremely loud minority. There’s a reason Lanterns kept 19mil concurrent viewers an episode.
7
u/Wonderful_Fruit6941 1d ago
The people who dislike it either have rational reasons behind their dislike or are just being whiny. Judging by how well Lanterns retained its audience, we can say the general audience enjoyed the show.
3
u/Fododel 23h ago
My only complaint is the lack of actual Green-Lanterning happening, the all-talk-no-show of it, and the fact they had to kill Hal.
I wish they could've just gave him a Barry Allen retirement, man.
And unironically, throwing a hot take, but this show smells exactly like what a Snyderverse GL would be like, literally.

Yh , it was a pretty well written show. Well choreographed scenes. Still people can't realise that the director already declared it to be true-detective style rather than a all out action show. It was about the character not the ring , it was the motive of the show.

What? Ive never heard this take. I thought people were liking it and it has been a success for HBO! I liked it but I watched it with two other people who had no idea about anything GL related. Reddit is full of constant circlejerk bitching about this show after the final episode that- I can't believe I am saying this. Instagram has more positive about this show than reddit did. The second racism app. Even when there's a negative comment there's always a reply defending the show.
This shit is fucking tiring. Can't fucking believe I prefer Instagram over reddit.

The thing to understand is that, for certain people, they cannot separate themselves and the art that they profess to love. Any time anyone uses the words "respect" or "disrespect" in terms of superheroes and comic books, they're just code words for, "You are dumping on the character I love, and therefore, on me."
I love Lanterns. I thought the first season was great. I love its take on Hal Jordan. I thought John Stewart was the most interesting he has ever been, and I liked what the show had to say about institutions and nurture/nature. But the show has its flaws. I thought the pacing fell off after episode 5. The power ring isn't use a whole lot, which can be an issue in a TV show about a power ring. Some people took issue with how the plot moved forward, with characters telling you what happened as opposed to showing.
Evaluation of TV shows is always going to be subjective, but there was a certain part of the fanbase that immediately turned on the show once they realized that Hal is dead and was kind of a fuck up for a good chunk of his life. That's just a bridge too far for these people. It's a sin to them, and they'll never be able to get over it.

If there was no budget why making the show? I really tried to like it but in my deepest I knew it’s not a good green lantern product, they don’t show you flashbacks of what happened they just tell you that happened, the most exciting thing in the show is see Hal Jordan flying come on, I really tried to convince myself to like it but after I finish it immediately went to play Superman and see Guy Gardner’s green lantern and his ring that has plenty charge to get the job done, John’s own oath? Lmao
2
u/VinsonDynamics 11h ago
They had plenty of budget, the style of the show was exactly what they intended. I don't know where everyone is getting this idea from that lack of action and special effects must mean lack of money as if a show cant simply choose to be more grounded

I'm not sure a decent percentage of the people who I've seen complaining about it online have even watched the whole show. So many complaints about isolated scenes while completely ignoring their context, as if they've only watched clips on tiktok or YouTube. I didn't think it was perfect, but reading some of these comments is crazy. You'd think the show was just hours of the cast and crew kicking puppies and taunting orphans.
It's one of the more annoying things about the Internet, any media that isn't incredible is the worst thing that's ever existed.

Peacemaker is still my favorite DC show but even that didn’t quite stick the landing on the season 2 finale. Finales are hard it seems, but I can forgive it when the rest of the show is good.
Peacemaker should’ve ended on the boat scene in S2 but I know they needed to set things up for the future, similarly to how maybe Hal should’ve retired as opposed to being forcibly retired here.

I think there's a couple ways the show didn't really stick the landing, but was otherwise quite good throughout. I think they needed to have a different plan for the Noah situation, what they did is essentially the plot from The Boys with Ryan where they needed the child who could possibly genocide the planet to have a loving mom, so they can't send her to jail for killing Hal.
Otherwise, a bunch of the criticism is just people building up how they felt the show needed to go in their heads and being pissed off when it didn't. Same stupid shit that happens for every show with a season(s) long mystery these days.

A lot of people who dislike things are really vocal and present online, so it can give a really false perception on shows/movies. I think it's a lot more prevalent with stuff surrounding DC as you've got the Snyder cult who will literally hate on anything DCU related and will echo any negative sentiments online making things seem way worse than they are.

Why does it that so much people like it? Besides Hal’s charismatic acting I thought it was pretty bad. I really didn’t enjoy it. Am I stupid?
In seriousness, it wasn’t smart, the characters were not interesting with the exception of hal, but even he was an OC, and not true Hal. This shos had less to do with green lantern then and CW or DCEU movies did with its source material, there is truly no reason for this to be a GL show instead of some shitty HBO original

So what I've noticed is that it came out. Positive to neutral stances. Anti-woke dumbasses starting boycotting it because wokeness or some dumb nonsense. That led to people having a protective view of it where you almost weren't allowed to not like it. Now after the show is fully out it's finally in the normal where people are giving criticisms (imo valid ones) so you're having backlash of the protective people but also it's returning to normal so we're having normal conversations about it again and for the most part the anti-woke crowd move onto their next freak out for something they alo never watched XD. I didn't enjoy it but it's most because I felt like it was trying to be three shows and was shallow for most of them. The superhero stuff was so light that if it was gone they could easily keep the show without the lanterns and just pick something else. The mystery was so basic that it felt like they didn't give much thought to it while the generational trauma aspect felt like it was all of the show completely. I feel like they should just focused on one or two of these aspects instead so that they could have the ability to strengthen the concepts without making anything else lacking.

The moral of the story is that the cop can kill an unarmed man and get away with it, because cop has a family.
It’s fucking insane copoganda. And idealisation of domestic violence, replace gender roles of character and see how insane situation is.
It’s also bizzare how everyone just don’t care about dead superhero, case is closed, lol. In reality average cop would crack the case, since there aren’t many people who were around Hal around that time. So it’s bizzare that the show portrays the situation when murderer gets away with it as something realistic.
The series discuss topics of racism and cop violence, but it’s clearly was written by people who never experienced shit in their life, so they genuinely can’t imagine how people live.
Same goes to child abuse topics, there is a child abuse, but it goes nowhere.
Dynamic of the show is pretty garbage too, you can’t make the climax of the series in episode 5 and the rest 3 episodes feel like an epilogue.
All characters act like insane jerks too, I guess show want to make characters complex or something, but writers don’t know how to write, so they think Jerks = complex.
I am the person who experience cop malpractice, domestic abuse and some racism too. The show looks like a fucking insult to me. It stands against basic human empathy. And it’s absolute garbage for me because of that. I am really worried about superhero shows with such shitty message, I already had problems with Supergirl murdering unarmed man (comic book ending was the complete opposite), but Lanterns is some other level.
It’s bizzare that the same studio released wholesome Superman, but it also promotes this shit. America really has some problem with fascism now, and such movies and shows really reflect it, Strong Man becomes popular again…
Nowadays I really think Alan Moore was really right about fascism in comics.

green lantern show
no constructs
awful suit
human "aliens"
made hal look incompetent and lame.
made John the complete opposite of what his character should be.
the lanterns(and therings) having their own weird canon for some reason(like the fact anyone can use the ring even when they arent "chosen")
John steals a ring and then becomes a "dark lantern"(you literally cannot even make that up).
guy was willing to go against SUPERMAN, but is scared of john(whose lanternring wasn't even charged enough to fight guy)
sinestro was out of character too
i wonder why people don't like it.
