Strange Discussions DC fans when the Lanterns finale is a super well written character study and not John and Sinestro hitting each other in space with green and yellow hammers

134
u/Cautious-Affect7907 6d ago
Which is so funny considering Guy could've whopped his ass and just taken the ring there.
So weirdly out of character for him to get pressed so easily.
81
u/SubZeroKelvin 6d ago
As far as Guy knows John has a charged ring at that point.
53
u/CheifPig123 I'm proud of you, Dick 6d ago edited 6d ago
The implication was that john was bluffing having already charged it but even then guy still should have pushed back more, he was willing to fight superman just a year prior and he should know that john has less experience with the ring than him
21
u/DIOmega5 6d ago
They are on the same team, though. They rep the same squad. Guy is a loyal to the Lantern Corp.

u/mad_laddie 5d ago
He has little reason to think John was ill intentioned. Plus, if John's bringing up code for the Guardians' ears then there's bigger things going on.
→ More replies (1)36
u/Cautious-Affect7907 6d ago
Guy has like 10 years of experience on him and was even ready to fight Superman.
I don't see how he's at any disadvantage even if John wasn't bluffing.
9
u/Nimmyjewtron87 6d ago
Superman famously doesn’t kill and isn’t an ex marine with a stronger version of the most powerful weapon in the universe
6
u/Cautious-Affect7907 6d ago
Superman is also the strongest hero on earth.
John is an ex marine with a device he doesn't really know how to use.
I don't see how Guy would lose.
3
u/OddCombination 5d ago
Honestly given the reaction to the "code" we might be able to attribute this to his brain damage
25
u/ROBtimusPrime1995 6d ago edited 6d ago
Guy tried defeating a gigantic imp with a baseball bat and an enormous kaiju with oven mitts & an eye-poker.
He has the spirit and means well...but...
Edit: why do I even bother? Everyone in this post is arguing over whataboutism, and it is so annoying.
Guy didn't fight John because he knows he is a good person, and this shit is far from being over, almost like there's a Season 2 coming soon.

u/MuddFishh 6d ago
Remember how the guardians grew disdain for Hal because he had no respect for the chain of command? Guy knows he needs to go-ahead before making a move on John, especially with the code he was asked to deliver.
With Superman, a possible interplanetary threat beyond all threats, of course he was willing to throw down in a 3-on-1 situation. Guardians already charged him to neutralise threats like a rogue Superman, he didn't need to double check.
4
u/Cautious-Affect7907 6d ago
But from Guys perspective, John is literally a dude who manipulated him into bringing the corpse of Hal just so he could steal his ring.
And given the fact the guardians never actually approved of him to be a green lantern, Guy has more to lose by just going to them and telling them one of their rings was taken by an unsanctioned CIVILIAN than an approved lantern.
Guy would've thrown hands if he was actually written in character.
2
u/mad_laddie 5d ago
John was the Guardians pick though. They approved him, John just turned it down.
John is breaking protocol yes, but I doubt Guy has any reason to think John is a threat like what Superman could have been.
→ More replies (2)11
u/Mr_Olivar 6d ago
John's code clearly made Guy unsure if there was something going on he wasn't aware of. Kicking John's ass could have been a very bad idea.
4
u/Cautious-Affect7907 6d ago
It's still Guy freaking Gardner. He wouldn't just back down like that especially considering he was ready to fight an enraged Superman off the false assumption he was a plant conqueror.
→ More replies (3)6
u/mad_laddie 5d ago
John's picking a fight with the Guardians so Guy assumes there's something bigger going on.
Guy also probably doesn't think John's a bad guy or a threat to the planet.

I don’t think it’s to ridiculous to expect there to be actual green lanterns doing green lantern things in a show called lanterns. Imagine if the made a show called spiders and Peter and miles never wear their suits and don’t webswing and just spend the entire time in some shithole in Central America before Peter gets shot by some oc.
74
u/CountTruffula 6d ago
Like spider noir with nick cage, basically just a classic noir detective series with a tiny bit of spidering. Brilliant

u/Beanichu 6d ago
Spider-noir is a spinoff with a character nobody particularly cares about in a world where we already get a bunch of spider-man content. Not the main Green lantern plus one of the most popular. We also don’t get any other live action Green lantern media.
20
→ More replies (3)4
u/CountTruffula 6d ago edited 6d ago
I'd disagree that it's only good the way it is because we've had other action/CGI heavy spider men films, it's just a good story.
Plus the vacuum of other films shouldn't matter, if people are desperate to see constructs and big battles there's plenty of comics and animated movies. I'm not defending it or saying it was good but I don't think it's bad by virtue of dedicating several live action films to CGI grunt offs before you stop prioritising fights
9
u/shinkiju 6d ago
Actually the difference is that spider-noir did in fact wear a costume and stwing through a city fighting badguys, lanterns is just blatantly ashamed of being a super hero show
2
u/WiseGreybeard 3d ago
And the other difference is that Spider-Noir has a secret identity so there is an in-universe reason to not have Spider-Man doing Spider-Man things all the time: to not blow his cover. But in this series and the comics everyone knows the face of Hal, so he could be doing green constructs from sunrise to sunset and no one would care.

u/theassassin53035 5d ago
The expectation is fine. To use it as criticism is childish. Are we supposed to think a Lanterns show can only work if it has large construct battles and space joyrides. The show brought up such amazing character writing and lore and mechanics of the ring and willpower. Thats alot of fictional shit brought out and narratively such a masterpiece show. They focused on the characters and story for now i think thats worthy of saying a show is 10 or 9 out of 10

It's a trope about how back in the day, if someone made a show surf Dracula, that Dracula would be surfing every episode. But now it'd be a whole origin story of him getting the board and getting to the beach, then 5 minutes of surfing
Again, loved the show, but the trope is funny lmao
96
u/Beanichu 6d ago
Except we didn’t even get the five fucking minutes. We see like four constructs the entire damn time.

u/KinglessCrown 6d ago
Oh boy that is accurate and that is really fucking funny, boy there is a trope for everything and then some.
19
u/TLcool 6d ago
The trope also continues in that the following seasons also barely show Dracula surfing, constantly just teasing it until the last episode of the season.
I will say that I don't think it will be the case for lanterns, we're seeing him doing cool shit in MoT. I predict that season 2 will still keep the show grounded, but also actually make more fight scenes with green lantern constructs, finding a middle ground.
3
u/Once-Upon-A-Rhyme 6d ago
Solid chance that after this merger we don’t get more. Things my issue with all the comic shows lately. Either the company cancels them or some corporate maneuvering happens and then they’re canceled for other reasons. We could very well have watched a season of Surf Dracula just to find out that they’re going to reboot Surf Dracula under new management and five years from now we get a worse Surf Dracula
6
u/moosemuffin12 6d ago
I know it doesn’t fit this trope exactly but the post-credits scene in The King’s Man was really the peak of blockbuster teasers.
For those who haven’t seen it, the movie takes place during WW1 and at the very end they introduce a certain young Austrian painter like he’s fuckin Thanos lmao it’s amazing

Don’t forget when they kill Bruce in the first episode and have the answer to the “mystery” be because a new love interest who has been shown to be level headed decides to erratically shoot the man she supposedly loves in the face instead of having a conversation with him, only to face absolutely zero repercussions because Damian somehow decides that justice shouldn’t be served because apparently “Bruce would’ve wanted it”, and proceeds to wear the cowl that he robbed from Bruce’s corpse.

My main issue is hals death felt clunky, I understand the intent that hal was risking shaking up her delusion about a calm small town life, but girl straight up drew her pistol, 180'd into a headshot. The argument should have been longer and allowed to get more heated up first
Also John hugging his abusive mom was gross, I get it's supposed to be him letting go of his trauma. But his mom was evil as fuck
Noah was great though, and I do feel like they should have elaborated more on the new lantern, sinestro forged it with no further elaboration on the how felt handwavey
I feel like the disappointment of some fans is the shows fault in some regards tho. The battle against zoe with the town being riddled with space lazers set the bar too high for the finale, and I think it's not unfair to have expected more of an actual confrontation with the way they built up sinestro as this terrifying dude who killed a guardian and was sent to one of the highest security prisons in the galaxy, and while I'm sure that'll pay off next season, I don't blame folks expecting that to pay off in the finale
→ More replies (4)3
u/elemepep-ton 6d ago
What I hated about how he forgave his mom was the part when he says that each time she sent John to a dangerous place it was like "holding her breath" and how worried she was. If something had happened to John, that crazy ass woman would have just used one of John's sibblings or even make a new one.
47
u/Tijenater 6d ago
I would’ve liked a little more scifi in the show.
Would it kill them to have Kilowog show up for his funeral for like, 2 minutes and dip? Or show Noah busting Sinestro out of super space jail with his manhunter tech?

I don’t know if it’s the Goomba Effect, but I have no clue why the people making fun of Marvel for having their shows devolve into last minute CGI slopfights, wanted the Lanterns to end the exact same way.
33
u/S0LO_Bot 6d ago edited 6d ago
It’s because CGI slopfests are important if the character in the comics is essentially a drawn slopfest.
And people absolutely made fun of early MCU for occasionally being afraid of its own premises. It’s just MCU was able to establish itself in a way that it felt it could experiment with cool powers and still hold some level of realism.
→ More replies (2)6
u/shadowcladwarrior 5d ago
Loki isn't a cgi slopfest but works excellently with showing his powers and growth of powers when needed and with a great story.
Do you genuinely believe that cgi slopfest and near zero cgi and usage of powers are the only 2 options? Nothing in between?

Posts like this are always the mark of a successful media project. It definitely doesn’t indicate that the project was an abject failure and people have to vaguepost making fun of critics in a pathetic attempt to defend it. Green space cop show was bad. Get over it. Find a show that actually values your time and investment instead of just dangling keys in front of your face just to subvert your expectations and throw the keys down the drain.

Larpers when a showrunner and director hate the source material, and intentionally alienate the DC fans (gif provided)
You know what finale would've been better? If he teamed up with Guy, imprisoned her, Noah and Sinestro, which could allow Guy to say that he needed the help John provided, in turn the Guardians saying that if John is so helpful while Guy is not good enough:
- they may as well let them both govern the same place - which would be a nice alternative where you can have both in a movie or the next season as frenemies that may turn against each other from their rivalry
- or better yet, tell Guy that he can keep his ring but he has to now guard a sister location, that's much safer, as he can't even take care of earth - that would anger Guy so you could still have the John vs Guy immediate pvp next time they meet
It's also badly written as a finale already.

3
u/Dry-Principle2627 6d ago
Thoughts about larpers?
3
u/AyKiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii 6d ago
Both fans and larpers are allowed to exist, but both sides shouldn't throw a fit just because Larpers don't like something being 1:1 with the source material, or because they think it is bad, and just because Fans don't like something not being 1:1 with the source material, or because they think it is bad.
You are allowed to dislike something, you are allowed to like something, but you are just an ass if you go after someone for them NOT liking something. It's akin to skinning someone alive just because they don't want to eat escargot.

this is a show about the green lanterns where all the active green lanterns on earth cant fucking stand each other and want each other gone. meanwhile one of the core appeals of green lantern is the camraderie amongst the lanterns, ESPECIALLY between hal, john, guy, and kyle.
the moment i realized that this is what the show wanted, it completely died for me. guess we'll have to wait another 15 years for a faithful and well-executed adaption of GL in live action

Honestly that wasn't even the problem. The finale was good, but basically everyone just gave up. Oh, Sinestro has escaped? It's okay, he's tied up. Noah's a manhunter? It's okay, Noah just gives up asks John to kill him. John confronts Kerry about Noah? It's okay, she just rolls over and admits to killing the last guy who did that. Kerry admits to killing Hal and says she'll turn herself in? It's okay, John says Hal probably wouldn't want that and actually John's not even that mad. John confronts Guy and exposes himself as stealing a ring and having an unsanctioned lantern? It's okay, Guy immediately surrenders the whole planet and leaves. Hal was worried that the unsanctioned lantern might be corrupt? It's okay, turns out that's not a big deal and it works just fine. John's mom was abusively strict his whole life and John is finally going home to see her? It's okay, he's cool with her now because Kerry was sad about her kid and being fearful of your own abuse just wipes out the mind-blowingly insane decision to do that in the first place. (Like, seriously? We're supposed to feel for his mom just because SHE was scared that SHE sent her son into bad neighborhoods. Seriously, come on.)
I honestly preferred having a more low key ending because that's the show's vibe, but come on. Literally the whole episode presented us with crazy problems and dilemmas only for everyone to just throw their hands up and go home. Everyone just kinda gives in. Even when it makes sense, like Kerry saying she'll turn herself in to authorities, John somehow out-surrenders her and says she actually shouldn't do that, even though we've watched him try to hunt Hal's killer for some time now.
Is it a character study rather than an action set piece? Yes, and I love that. Is it well written? That's not something I can quantitatively say, but it was frustrating. I guess I'll see when the "Thoughts on Lanterns (2026)" meme resurfaces again in a few months.

The show definetely needed a bigger budget and it needed to have more green lantern related stuff in it but other than that it’s good show.

"I am going to let this conflicted super-being go now, hoping his mom has a good influence on him, when I know that he knows that his mom already killed one person for him, and he himself is having suicidal tendencis, that definitely will not affect thier relationship and his upbringing, oh and his mom calls herself a mental patient" independent contractor green lantern John Stewart.

Is that what they’re complaining about? I thought it all the character assassinations, lack of any repercussions for anyone not named Hal, and the complete lack of Power Ring constructs in a show about Green Lanterns?

I really enjoyed Lanterns and can’t wait to see more. But to be fair, we could have had both… You can have well written character studies with quality actions sequences. 🤷♂️

Why would they used Hammer ? Thor is the God of Hammer and Axes, no one can use those without his permission and no one exept Jane can use Hammer without asking
