News Google accidentally published the Gemini CLI blog post. The release is probably soon.

this , if the limits are real and free this is competition finally.
39
u/evia89 Jun 25 '25
it will be free for 1-2 months then free tier will be flash only (my guess)
10
u/ChristBKK Jun 25 '25
yeah :D most probably haha.. google will f*** it up again

Anyone who thinks any free AI by the frontier models is going to consistently stick around in the easy abuse way is crazy
But it likely will continue for a long time in the way it's been happening, where everything gets cheaper and the free continues to be ok for lightweight users
1
u/Moist_Swimm Jun 26 '25
its not a trap... its an intro... yall are lacking in the intelligence department if you ever think expensive premium models will ever /always/ be free.. Come on..
3
Jun 25 '25
Knowing Google it’ll be for a bit then they’ll change and screw us. Thankfully developers are on to this I think and they just bother don’t moving over because they know it’ll be just as expensive as opus like Google raised the prices to Gemini 2.5 to iirc
2
2
1
u/Condomphobic Jun 25 '25
Gemini 2.5 is still cheap
1
Jun 25 '25
No Google isn’t cheap. For coding with 200k+ tokens, Gemini 2.5 Pro costs $2.50/million input and $15/million output - pretty much same as Claude 4 Sonnet ($3/$15). Compare to: DeepSeek-R1 - (5/28): $0.55/$2.19 per million tokens (about 5x cheaper), Qwen-3-255: $1.60/$6.40 per million tokens (still so much cheaper). Plus DeepSeek is completely free on their website. Gemini 2.5 Pro sucks, while costing way more.
1
u/Condomphobic Jun 25 '25
Then go use DeepSeek ?
1
Jun 25 '25
Claude is tops and qwen is #2 if you’re coding as I understand it. But I’m not a coder, I use DeepSeek and Gemini flash 2.5 professionally but I have specific use cases: DeepSeek is king for social media text and scripts, no one can touch it, and for SEO and product page copy, while Gemini flash sucks for everything, it’s one exception is it’s good for that

u/inquirer2 Jun 25 '25
You literally are taking the best one, Gemini Pro 2.5 is so good you literally shouldn't be trying to use that for every single thing you do as it's not cost efficient for Google to offer it it's definitely not cost efficient for you to be paying for it, at least at this time

u/imizawaSF Jul 21 '25
Gemini 2.5 Pro is far better than deepseek and has 1million context window vs 64k for deepseek. And yes, it's cheap. I like how you use "coding with 200k+ tokens" as a negative when Deepseek can't even manage half of that. Look at the other premium models. Opus 4 is $75 out
0
u/Moist_Swimm Jun 26 '25
lol what? "developers are on to this" hahahaha... brother... if you didnt know immediately thats how things work then i have a bridge to give you.
take what you get for free, its an intro. Free premium models are not sustainable by any company to be free forever.. Wishing otherwise or thinking youre being conned when they start charging is extremely naive and silly.
1
u/vhdblood Jun 26 '25
First time using it, already switched me to flash and asked me to enter API key to use Pro.

They're also sometimes plausibly intentional, but for internal political reasons rather than marketing ones.
Kinda like how Llama 1 was originally a leaked internal meta model. Once it was leaked it became popular enough that Meta pivoted their strategy to OSS open-weights models.
There was probably not a chance in hell at the time that meta execs would ever consider releasing open weights models. At the time, most of industry was too terrified of the potential negative PR impact if someone used their company's model for malicious purposes, and dramatically underestimated the advantages of open source in terms of tooling/integrations/etc.
But once the first one leaked and everyone downloaded it off BitTorrent and started building with it, and it didn't cause any major PR backlash, execs saw it was such a hit that they pivoted to "yeah, publicly releasing it as OSS was totally our plan all along".
I don't think it was ever confirmed that the leak was an intentional move to push leadership towards OSS, but there were a lot of rumors and speculation that it could be the case.
Also this really does seem to display "fully open source" and "Apache 2.0" way more prominently than I would expect for a Gemini product release.

Can someone explain what is the difference b/w api and cli? Like what does being in terminal help with?
31
u/Appropriate_Car_5599 Jun 25 '25
basically CLI is a terminal program without a UI in the usual sebse, but very powerful because it can access your filesystem directly and execute commands. I'm using Claude code rn and it's awesome. I can use it everywhere without being tied to any software like code editor, text editor, and so on. raw access to files to read/edit them, understand every context, fix any OS issues and so on
under the hood CLI will communicate with API to be able to send/receive information from Gemini
2
u/houseswappa Jun 25 '25
I've wanted this for so long
3
u/Longjumping_Bid4194 Jun 25 '25

API is a more general access to the model. You can call an API from anywhere - an app, a script, terminal etc - it's just the most basic way to request a response from a model.
CLI in this case is more of a product like Claude Code. They build a terminal experience that allows the model to Act agentically to write code and run commands just based on one message like "fix issue #69". It's still making API calls internally though, just the model is the one initiating the calls instead of you - it's talking to itself basically.
There are a few products like this: Claude Code/Codex/Aider I think
1
0
u/AyeMatey Jun 25 '25
“It’s talking to itself” is not a good way to describe it. There are multiple independent actors here. Just because Google stamped the name “Gemini” on a bunch of them, doesn’t mean they are all the same thing.
The cli is a chatbot program. It can
- accept user input
- invoke MCP Tools
- send generateContent requests to generativelanguage.googleapis.com
- read or update the file system
- present results to the user
The cli is not an LLM, or more generally “a model”.
None of the actions that the CLI can perform are fairly summarized as “talking to itself”.I dislike when people squash these things down to “it’s an LLM”. Or “it’s a model”. It’s not. It’s a distributed system. An LLM (model) is one part of the system. There are other important parts of the system.
No one would call Aider a model. Why refer to Gemini CLI as a model? It confuses people. It’s misleading.
1
u/danihend Jun 25 '25
I don't believe I called Gemini CLI a model. Your dislike has been noted though, thanks for sharing 😘
1
u/AyeMatey Jun 25 '25
You are, again, missing the point. I’ll make it shorter for you: your characterization of how it works, was inaccurate and misleading.
1
u/danihend Jun 26 '25
Completely disagree. I think it's a great simplification. To demonstrate why, here is your post, modified:
The cli is a chatbot program with an LLM as the "engine". It can
- accept user input to a model
- invoke MCP Tools by request of the model
- can send generateContent requests to generativelanguage.googleapis.com, where models are hosted
- read or update the file system as dictated by...the model
- present results to the user, from the model
The rest of your post was a rant based on you not reading my comment correctly so I'll leave that part out 😀.

Eh, with so many modern tools it really feels like a personal choice. I'm a vim user and I live in my terminal, but my IDE-using coworkers can do basically all the same stuff I can.
3
u/AyeMatey Jun 25 '25
The comment you are responding to, was remarking on one person’s lack of understanding of the difference between API and CLI. Your reply is talking about editors. You’re off track.

Welcome to the internet? Grow a pair, it actually is constructive if you take a hard look at yourself. Might even be an opportunity to improve.
Or you can cry and be offended.
But i’m no one just a dev with 20 years experience that can build apps from anywhere in the world with my hands on the homerow.
2
u/Staccado Jun 25 '25
I say this with the most respect possible,
No one gives a flying fuck if you can 2yy a couple lines .5 seconds faster than someone can highlight and ctrl c on a GUI. It's the end result that matters
-1
u/Icy_Foundation3534 Jun 25 '25
I guess you don’t work with PMs or Product owners or C level execs. Deadlines matter. Speed matters. Efficiency matters.
But sure speed to market these days is pointless no one gives a flying fuck right? If a hotfix needs to happen right away lets just do it in 2 hours instead of 5 min.
With all due respect just sit the fuck down.

u/ming86 Jun 25 '25
probably limit of 100 Gemini 2.5 Pro messages shared with Gemini App/Web... 🤣
4
u/DepthHour1669 Jun 25 '25
Did you read the article?
That free license gets you access to Gemini 2.5 Pro and its massive 1 million token context window. To ensure you rarely, if ever, hit a limit during this preview, we offer the industry’s largest allowance: 60 model requests per minute and 1,000 requests per day at no charge.
2
u/ming86 Jun 25 '25
We are talking about the Google One AI Pro $20 subscription plan, like the Claude Pro/Max subscription plan connected to Claude Code to enable monthly flat rate usage instead of pay-per-token API pricing.
We are wondering if Google is going to allow us to connect Gemini CLI with the Google One AI Pro $20 subscription plan like what Anthropic does.
Note: Gemini 2.5 Pro model messages on the Google One AI Pro $20 subscription plan are limited to 100 messages per day.

u/Condomphobic Jun 25 '25 edited Jun 25 '25
I never understood why people expect a plan to include free API usage.
Lol API exists so you don’t need to have a plan.
5
u/y8MAC Jun 25 '25
Did you know you’re using an API when you use it in the browser? Except Google just charges you a flat rate instead of per use. Same thing here.
Also Anthropic offers flat rate usage with Claude Code so it’s a fair expectation.
-11
u/BoJackHorseMan53 Jun 25 '25
Gemini Pro which you probably got for free.
14
u/Fun-Emu-1426 Jun 25 '25
I hope you realize they tied it into Google one for a reason. There’s plenty of adults who actually pay for storage through Google. Like I’m already it over a terabyte and I need to upgrade to the 5 TB plan. They tied it in so we will pay more. I mean at what point do people just not want to be bitter or realize that they just are being bitter? Like what the fuck is this mentality? Especially considering didn’t actually give it out to students for free?

u/Predatedtomcat Jun 25 '25
First question - do they train on your data ?
5
5
u/no_witty_username Jun 25 '25
You should always assume your data is used for whatever means they want. Any other assumptions would be naive.
2
u/Predatedtomcat Jun 25 '25
yes, but i pay for claude max and codex just so they dont use it .. if its free then its yes.
1
u/AyeMatey Jun 25 '25
Not “whatever they want.” It’s in the terms of service document, which …. everyone reads , right? It says Google can use the data for the purposes of improving its products. IANAL, but would assume “training models” is covered under “improving products.”
2
u/ra2eW8je Jun 25 '25
why else would they give you free requests? you use their stuff for free and in return they train on your data.
1
u/Affectionate_Food_53 Jun 28 '25
Yes but only if using it under the free tier (Google login, no paid Gemini API access).

Wow and its free (at least for now). Yeah there not gonna let Anthropic dance in the spotlight for too long it seems. If its as good as Claude code (which is really good IMO) this will nuts.

u/Lorevi Jun 25 '25
I'm kinda sceptical tbh. I love gemini as a model, but I don't know how useful being able to call Gemini from the command line will be.
Especially their point about it sharing the same tech as gemini code assist. Not exactly much of a flex when gemini code assist is easily the worst coding assistant on the market right now lol.
3
u/Thomas-Lore Jun 25 '25
It could work if it is using Pro, but I cannot imagine Flash being able to handle files without constant fuck ups.
1
u/VegaKH Jun 25 '25
That's a good point, Code Assist does suck. But Gemini 2.5 is a great coding assistant, better than Claude 4 in my opinion. So if this works as well as Claude Code, it would be huge.
Also, I really hope after full launch they have an unlimited option similar to Claude Max, and hopefully it's less expensive.

They'll halve the rate limits like they did with aistudio once people actually use their product. Don't fall for this crap again.
32
Jun 25 '25
It’s open source. You can download it to your machine and run it.
For fucks sake. Google owes you nothing.
8
u/Appropriate_Car_5599 Jun 25 '25
I think u didn't understand how it works lol even if this product is open source you would still communicate with Gemini on Google's servers and hit usage limits
3
u/Fun-Director-3061 Jun 25 '25
That doesn't make any sense. If it's open source you take the source code and modify it to do whatever you want.
4
u/BookFingy Jun 25 '25
The CLI tool calls the Gemini API. Gemini API is the brain.
They can rate limit the API and you'd be left with another aider-like program. Maybe someone could get it to integrate with other APIs...
-2
u/Fun-Director-3061 Jun 25 '25
You still get the agent architecture, embedding methods and whatever bells and whistles Google puts into it for free. I don't know how entitled you'd have to be to complain for an open source project with free daily credits.
2
u/BookFingy Jun 25 '25
I'm not complaining. I'm telling you there are similar open source projects out there that are not tied to a specific model. So, this being open source isn't a big deal.
2
4
u/mtmttuan Jun 25 '25
After all there will still be API rate limit and charge. Though since it's open source you might be able to plug other models there.
