Meta: Blatant rule violation are now under a zero-tolerance policy.

With the uptick in rule-violating posts, we are implementing a zero-tolerance policy for the following rules:

  • Business and job posts
  • Sex solicitation
  • Illegal/drugs

These will not receive a removal/warning. You will be immediately banned permanently.

Since the last two are obvious, I'll explain the business posts decision:

This is not advertising space. It is for people to find people to help find/get rid of items. If you are posting a business post you should have more care for the reputation of you business than blatantly violating rules of a subreddit.

This also extends to individuals selling things on an ongoing basis. If you made it, and are selling it, you qualify as a business with regards to this rule. This is not up for argument. It is up to the moderators' discretion first and finally.

---

That said, if anyone wants to help ACTIVELY moderate and collaborate on rules/policies, please drop a comment. This is not a position you can sign up for and just sit on. There will be an initial 2 month trial period for engagement and participation, which will continue to be a factor once that period has passed.

Punish all for the acts of a few?

I get online moderation is hard so if you can't handle it then don't do it, but don't permanently ban people for one offs on that stuff. You have too much power. And the worst part is all the bots and spam will still keep coming. you'll just be banning real people in favor of bots. You should rethink your policy because it's things like this that ruin the Internet. You just favor the bots when you are too lazy to moderate content properly.

As someone who grew up in a world where classified ads in print often included things like people who sold craft items out of their home and odd job listings, and who landed here off an algorithm just like others who commented - I question the wisdom of banning people permanently for making a single post that is well within the historical definition of ‘classified ad’

But hey, I guess if it works for y’all, it works - but there’s no risk of the door hitting me. This post, the comments in it, and this comment I’m making now are my looking at the door and deciding I’m not even going to bother opening it.

The issue is allowing business posts at all, this quickly turns into just businesses spamming the page.

I understand that completely - and your rules are your rules. I’m just saying that the first post I see from this sub being effectively ‘we will be handing out permanent bans by criteria that mean someone making a first post who missed the rule, but really didn’t intend to break rules - which often happens - immediately gets permanently banned’ is something that makes me not want to interact with the sub beyond the comments I’m making here.

Edit: I could see you not even wanting to hit such people, but just having a large enough problem with people who aren’t that. The total effect is still the total effect.

You should read the rules of a sub before posting, especially if you’re trying to represent yourself as a business. Your argument doesn’t really hold up when you think about it. If somebody just comes to this sub looking for free advertising for their business, that’s exactly the person I’m trying to prevent from filling this sub with business ads.

I agree. But as a practical matter you have to know that people don’t, and that the class of potential posters I’m talking about actually exist.

Whether missing out on them because you’re perm banning on first offense is your call - your sub, your rules, I’ve been a mod and know some of the pain. You’re in a spot where you can’t make everyone happy - no mods can and still do a good job.

I’m not saying they should or shouldn’t do anything. I’m not supporting or opposing them. I’m just giving my first impression and how I’m going to act on it. Anyone else is free to do whatever they want.
