I'll never understand these kinds of people. I want access to a city and its culture, right in the middle of the east side practically on a college campus, but I better see no cars in the street. Delusional morons.

u/heyzeus212 19h ago
Well that college has only been there since 1875, so it's barely part of the neighborhood really.

u/Coujelais 17h ago
Since before UT existed mind you.

They had an advantage. UT only started with 40 acres. Huston-Tillotson had 40 acres AND a mule.

Especially when a developer tore down what was on the lot to create a new build that they paid over one mil for. 🙄

I think the issue is that so many people have moved onto the East side and want it to change. It's not Tarrytown but definitely has changed over the years. The fact that she brags (although prob inflated) about the price of the house makes it seem like she is saying because of the price we paid, we deserve more privilege than those that have lived here or were brought up here and people shouldn't park in front of our house bc it's "expensive." Then on top of that, she brings up a bogus graduation rate, so it's clear she has looked it up or been stewing about this for awhile. The east side of Austin was always pretty diverse (for Austin) and have historically been a place where the latinos and black people have been pushed away from the city center. I-35 was built as a way to divide the city even further. Now you have a lot of people who move here from out of state (or even in state) and buy up properties or pay a lot of money for houses where, originally, was the only place minorities could afford (and in historical context) or even be allowed to live in certain areas. Some of us appreciate the diversity. So many places are being washed away from any resemblance of diversity and are just plain and boring. These types people want their neighborhood to change based on how they want it to look and feel.
I think the husband was making the point that if people would please not park right in front of their badly landscaped entryway, it would be easier for them to exit/return, but the fact that the lady starts 1. Bragging? about the cost of her house, then 2. Brings up the graduation rate of the college these students are attending means there are bigger issues here for her. The fact that she didn't come out and apologize, but doubled down by hiring attorneys to try and get her name off the internet and them installing cameras everywhere with very bright motion activated floodlights at their house and installing no trespassing signs is very telling on how they feel about the whole situation.
They are not married but engaged, so I also think they might get married sooner so that her name changes and she won't show up on searches related to the article. I'm sure the guy is questioning whether he wants to spend the rest of his life with her, but he seems to be complacent in her behavior.

She can change her name, but it won’t change her racist, hateful soul. She’ll get in trouble again, especially if they don’t move.
She’ll just become the racist old lady that all the college students tell stories about, a physical embodiment of gentrification on the Eastside that you can see from the steps of the oldest college in the city.5
22
u/Keyboard_Cat_ 18h ago
Yep, it drives me crazy.
I'd say every 3-6 months when I'm parking (especially on the east side) someone will come rushing out of their house to tell me I can't park there. My wife usually groans because she knows what a pet peeve this is.
On a good day, I'll just say "Nope, not moving!" and walk away. Most days it's more like "Fuck off, it's legal parking." It's completely ridiculous that these asshats feel entitled to bully people about legal street parking. We need to normalize telling them to get fucked and deal with it.
32
u/defaulticus 19h ago
I mean, I'd prefer a walkable, transit-oriented city that doesn't give so much of the street to cars (which, are more optimized for suburban form anyway). Ideally, the street gives none of it's space to cars and takes it back for everything else it used to be for.
But, this wasn't really about parking, right? I thought this was because they're racist against the students at the black college.
21
u/Extreme-Poem-2309 18h ago

I haven't been to their house specifically, but they do have an ally behind them, that's usually where people in those house park or put their garages.

I lived in Easton park in a studio garage apartment for a bit and my boyfriend got a note on his truck to stop parking on the public street in front of the neighbors house.
We talked about how wild it was with the people who owned my apt, and then found out one of them wrote a note to another neighbor asking them to stop parking in front of their house! The ‘burbs, man.

It's very common. Similarly, people who move near parks frequently begin lobbying to close various entrances to the parks, set limited access hours, etc. The urge to privatize public resources is almost instinctual in a certain class of up-and-coming homebuyers.
15
u/uteropharmaceutical 19h ago
My boomer mom once said “ [X] neighborhood used to be nice, until everyone started parking on the streets!” Which makes me laugh and shows their mindset, but I wonder if it’s the rise in consumerism filling the garages up to the point you can’t park in it atp
5
u/Slypenslyde 16h ago edited 15h ago
I wonder about this when I walk around my neighborhood.
A lot of houses make sense. They have a garage full of shit, one car in the driveway, and sometimes another car on the street because it's the "secondary" car put out of the way of the "main" car. Some of the houses have 3 cars, these are usually houses with a high school kid and again that makes sense.
It even makes sense one guy parks his dump truck on the "big" road leading out of the neighborhood and walks 3 blocks to his house: there's nowhere on the actual neighborhood streets to park something that big and it's noisy when he starts it up. I appreciate him, even though he parks in a spot that makes it impossible to see traffic when crossing the road.
Then there are the people who live like a used car dealer. One house on my street is 3 people and they have 2 cars in the driveway, 2 in front of the house, and 4 across the street in front of the house. Next door is a family with a kid and they have 4 cars. These are all 2 or 3 bedroom homes and a lot of them have 5-6 cars. Sometimes parked in the yards because they've run out of street to park on.
One house used to have about 3 cars crammed in the driveway, 2 in the yard, 3 in the street in front of the house, and 4 parked on the street across from the house. They sat there so long at least 4 of the cars had their tires start to dry rot. One day the cars were gone and there was a sign in the yard: "IT'S NOT NEIGHBORLY TO HAVE MY CARS TOWED, MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS". Seems like someone got a little upset. (My guess is it was the people across the street from them with 2 Teslas that used to put MAGA signs in their front yard.)
There's a person an entire street away that sometimes parks in front of my house and walks back to theirs. There is never a car in their driveway, they only seem to park in random places all over the neighborhood.
One of our streets is constantly lined with 8-10 cars that have no plates, no registration, and usually disappear in 72 hours. I guess someone's running a used car lot? A lot of them have carmax plate covers but no plates.
There's one house I've never seen a person enter or leave. The car in the driveway has been there so long plants are growing over it and the tires have dry rotted. Every now and then I hear a loud radio playing from the house. It plays for 3-5 days then stops. All day. All night. Sounds like an alarm clock radio. Nonetheless, there are 3 cars that park in front of it, probably related to the house across the street where what seems like a car club is usually modding a charger and a Mustang.
There's been a Lowe's truck parked near our neighborhood park across from a school for 8 months now. I've never seen it move.
The only thing that makes sense is "I guess people just like having cars". To me, each car's a burden.
(I'm not a nosy neighbor, I just take walks and touch grass. I've been taking 3-4 walks a day for nearly 3 years now, so I've passed by most of these houses more than 1,000 times on every day of the week at almost any time of day with sunlight. You get to where you notice the patterns and can tell when something's changed. I have to spend half my time walking in the road because so many god damned cars are parked across the sidewalk.)

I think a lot of gentrified area homes are costing over $1M. It has to be so they can keep out the people they don’t like. This city is ridiculously over priced. I heard of 2 homes in a neighborhood in NW Austin that were bought in the last 5 years for over 1M and sold more recently for more than their purchase price. When is this bubble going to burst?
Austin real estate is screwed up.
3
u/ZebraBeautifulStars 9h ago
Yeah but if she wanted a private street, she could’ve moved to a smaller, shittier city in Texas. Total tool behavior.
Agreed Austin real estate is screwed up.3
u/ScrotusLotus 9h ago
If she wanted a private street she needs to see a therapist so she can learn to live in reality… streets are public in nearly place. She pays and we all pay taxes for access to public streets. I used to be shocked that people behave this way. But it seems to be fairly common these days.

Awful snobby, entitled people. And their house has a two-car garage in the back so they have plenty of parking for their own vehicles! Never understand people like this who think they are so entitled to everything around them, especially moving into a historical and dense city neighborhood where cars are going to park on the streets. Did they not do their research on the area first? We already have a problem in the nearby neighborhoods to this one with "resident only" parking signs taking up an entire block without residents ever parking there, basically selfishly taking over street parking for no reason, when every house has a driveway and some with garages. What a waste of space... If the street is wide enough, cars should be allowed to park freely. I understand residents without driveways or garages getting annoyed because they don't have parking, but also this is the city and they can WALK a block or covert their yard into a parking area. Rant over.

Some homeowners and neighborhoods are so crazy about their street parking.
55
u/BroBeansBMS 20h ago
If you live in a dense urban area like this it’s crazy to care.
It is a little bit of a dick move if someone does this to your suburban home in Leander while they have parking in front of their own home available. It’s not illegal, but just kind of rude.
7
u/makedaddyfart 18h ago
Yup. Public street. Shut up and stop crying unless a car is blocking a driveway or has been abandoned
8
u/PricedOut4Ever 20h ago
Obviously she’s not in the right. But I’ve been on both sides of this. Fighting over scarce parking sucks. It’s frustrating all around.
When I used to live in Boston, people would get in serious altercations and it was legal to use spot savers during a snow emergency. Kinda makes sense but you shoveled your spot, but you only shoveled your spot because you happened to have been there when it started to snow.
34
u/Ryaninthesky 20h ago
I definitely understand it’s frustrating, but it also seems like something you should expect if you choose to buy a house right next to a university campus?
34
u/Artistic-Tadpole-427 20h ago
They don't have scarce parking. The house has a two car garage accessible via the alley according to the original house listing.
7
u/TaiChi_in_the_park 19h ago
I lived in Boston (North End and Allston) for 6 years. Between limited parking and predatory towing practices, I never understood why anyone owned a car who lived in town.
4
u/PricedOut4Ever 18h ago
I also lived in the north end. I paid $380 a month to park in the north end garage and not have to deal with it.
Car was awesome because I’d spend every weekend in the summers going to the whites and I could grocery shop at market basket rather than having to go to the star under the garden or the golden goose. I also didn’t have family up there, so wasn’t like I could store a car at someone’s house or borrow one for a weekend getaway.
The major street conflicts I saw were in Everett.
3
u/TaiChi_in_the_park 16h ago
Was that the one at Commercial and Prince? If so my brother did the same thing, parked on the top floor. He’d go up to the north shore a lot too
34
u/Busy_Struggle_6468 20h ago
Her issue wasn’t scarce parking, it was the number of Black people on her street.

2
u/RangerDangerfield 16h ago
Yeah in cities where you have to shovel out your own spot for street parking it can be serious business if you violate the “neighborhood code” and take someone else’s spot.
But that’s also based on a community understanding that shoveling means dibs that doesn’t apply here.
3
u/Keyboard_Cat_ 17h ago
But I’ve been on both sides of this.
Then you've been on the wrong side of this sometimes. When it's legal for people to park on a public street, it's wrong to harass or bully people for parking on that street.
I've lived in Boston (and Chicago) as well, so I'm well aware of the winter parking conflicts. That doesn't change the fact that the residents who are escalating conflicts are IN THE WRONG. And I feel that you're being a little pedantic about the snow emergencies. In Boston, there are 1-3 declared snow emergencies per year that last on average 48 hours. That means that on average, someone can legally use a "space saver" about 1% of the time. Hardly the standard and yet Boston residents are dickheads about their parking 100% of the time.
Also, it's worth noting that a snow emergency in Boston only makes it legal to USE a space saver (which is generally illegal to do). It is NOT then illegal for others to move that space saver and park there. The City website just endorses the "snow etiquette" of allowing people to use the space savers, but it doesn't change the legality of people parking where they want on a public street. Yes, it's generally considered a jerk move in those conditions to move the saver and take a spot someone shoveled. But it's not illegal and getting in someone's face to escalate the issue is a bad idea.

Several twins of hers in this neighborhood have overpaid for their shitbox mansion and think the same way 9th Street Karen does, even putting signs on fences and poles telling people not to park in front of their homes where it's allowed since there's no permit required or curbs painted red or yellow. u/AnAssumedName 19h ago
It doesn't show the final sale amount, but it does show the final asking price which is commonly (especially in the current and recent markets) very close to final sale price.

10
u/Salt-Operation 19h ago
You can look up past property sales data. It’s public information, and it’s available on every Zillow listing, down towards the bottom. We are not talking about the “Zestimate” bullshit.
6
u/FLDJF713 19h ago
That still only shows asking price not sale price. Texas doesn’t allow it to be shown.
2
u/beerfoodtravels 19h ago
Indeed, I have to contact my realtor every time I want to know the actual final sale price of houses on my street.
5
u/StayJaded 19h ago
Not in Texas. It does show the list price, and they likely paid close to that price. However, Texas has a dumbass law that allows non-disclosure of residential sales prices. The closing prices of any property was listed on the county tax database, but that changed several years ago.

Yeah, it's pretty clear that she doesn't want to make amends.
That said, I'm surprised she's not trying to make it official -- this program was designed to give her what she wants: only residents and their guests can park in the covered region.
Some of the neighborhoods next to UT seem to have this set up, so I'm surprised her neighborhood hasn't done it. It sucks for people not in the neighborhood, but it would give her what she wants.

My Tejano neighbors have put cones in front of their house to prevent people from parking in the street, this is not a rich white lady thing. This is the biggest nothing burger of a controversy.
45
u/texistentialcrisis 19h ago
It’s not about saving the parking, it’s about claiming that it’s “her” neighborhood, to the exclusion of a school that’s been there since the 1800s, because she thinks her boyfriend paid a lot for his house and because the school has a low graduation rate.
-17
u/dickdickgoooose 19h ago
When I live ina neighborhood I describe it as my neighborhood. This is what this woman is saying to a person who is telling her that because she isn't black it is not her neighborhood. You live in a neighborhood, is it yours? Or do you say that this neighborhood that I live in is an historically native American land? Should the Comanche have described their land as historically Clovis land?
29
u/texistentialcrisis 19h ago edited 19h ago
Context matters, amigo. She says it is “OUR” neighborhood because the college has only a 25% graduation rate and she paid what she thinks is a lot of money for her house.
Her clear meaning is that it is hers to the exclusion of others, and in particular to the exclusion of the students and poor neighbors. It says a lot about who she is and how she sees the world.
If she’d said, even angrily, “this is my neighborhood too!” I really don’t think people would be making such a big deal about this.

It's about suggesting her concerns are more important than the presence of the university because of the graduation rate. Its about white people calling a historically black area "our neighborhood" while shouting at a black person holding a camera. If it had just been an disagreement over parking, it wouldn't have been news.

I’m curious how people feel about resident permits for street parking compared to this situation. Every time it comes up in some parking discussion, people are quick to downvote anyone suggesting the permits are stupid and that you don’t own parking in front of your street.
But here, people defend public street parking fine. Make it make sense.
12
9
u/R4whatevs 18h ago
What? You don't like your tax dollars going to turning a public road into a gated community?
1
u/FLDJF713 17h ago
Nope, I dont. But so many people on the sub downvote and defend it when you recommend to ignore the signs and park there anyway.
8
u/QU4 17h ago
What I don’t understand about resident permits in Austin is that they almost completely prevent non-residents from parking. Every other city I’ve been in typically allows 2-4hrs parking without a permit. This allows people to come and go to business and allows for some turnover to keep spots open for residents.
3
u/FLDJF713 17h ago
The permits are for certain hours only but yeah, it can make it annoying to give out guests parking passes issued to you. God forbid you have a house party.
2
u/nowirehangars 16h ago
Our block has residential parking. We got really tired of people tossing trash in our yards and sometimes getting hostile with us, so we applied for the permits. It's only during certain hours, but it helps. However, I'd never have the attitude of that dipshit woman by the college.
1
u/TheChrisLambert 15h ago
If it’s near a popular area, like South Congress, people might just park there non stop.
2

And that’s perfectly fine! It’s crazy to me that there’s all this parking steps away from all these businesses that nobody besides residents can use except during certain hours. Residents would find spots that open up because of the time limits, park on their property, or lease a spot from neighbors.

people are quick to downvote anyone suggesting the permits are stupid and that you don’t own parking in front of your street.
But here, people defend public street parking fine. Make it make sense.
This isn't a contradiction, it already makes sense. People generally agree that street parking should be free and you don't own the street parking in front of your house. What's confusing you?

Any time anyone suggests that permit parking is stupid or suggests a permitted street to park for things like Terry Blacks or places on Congress, people downvote them for suggesting that.

u/agray20938 18h ago
Yeah both of those positions boil down to "don't restrict who gets to park on the street."

u/ohcooool 17h ago
I think you are misunderstanding. The above poster is saying that when people say residential parking is bad they get downvoted for that opinion, suggesting that others think residential permitting and restrictions on parking are good, to some extent.
I don’t think it’s inherently contradictory to support residential parking permits in some places while also holding the view that outside of those programs, you don’t own the street in front of your house. Just hoping to clarify what the above poster was trying to get at, as I realized it got a little unclear when they added the part about “or suggests a permitted street to park…”

They are stupid. Also if people aren’t going to handle parking on the curb appropriately, why would they respect a permit?

There are a few neighborhoods where the houses don't have garages and street parking is the only option. For those I understand not wanting people to park in front of your house.
If you've got an off-street spot, don't expect me to not park in front of your house. Not my fault you turned your garage into a lounge.

Dont see how that makes a difference. It's on you to have a parking spot if you want one, just because you don't have one on your property, doesn't make it the public's responsibility to give you one.
But, yeah, I mean I would also want my spot up front, but it's not a guarantee. You gotta buy a house with a driveway if you need a spot.

If anyone wants to see where these residential parking zones are around Austin, here's a map:

In the article, a quote from one of the other neighbors who is protesting the couple:
> "Every once in a while, they'll block my driveway, and I'll leave a note saying, ‘please don't block my driveway.’ But they've been very mindful and respectful. They'll move their cars," says Bradley.
In the first video that started everything the person approached the couple for putting this type of note on the cars on the street? Were the couples' notes harrassing or threatening?

Does anyone know what exactly she was saying initially to the students who were parking on the street?

u/aspicymeataballaaa 17h ago
i think about this a lot when trying to
find parking……. but if someone is purposefully keeping their garbage cans blocking a public curb, can i move them to park there? 😂 garbage cans are owned by the city not the homeowner so they can’t stop me

u/RangerDangerfield 16h ago
Are the cans at the curb awaiting pick up or empty? Because if my cans are at the curb for pick up and you move them and my trash doesn’t get taken, I’m gonna be furious.
Otherwise, sure scoot them into the driveway. But not on the grass (because it will kill it) and not onto the sidewalk (because other neighbors will lose their shit if the sidewalk is blocked)

If it’s the day before or day of trash day, no. Trash collection supersedes you parking.
Any of the other 5 days of the week, give it a try and see what happens

This woman clearly sucks, but also am always wary of the person walking up to someone filming because you know they’re hoping for a reaction/something controversial they can post.
Also, how is saying they only have a 25% graduation rate “SO racist” when the four year graduation rate is 27%
Wait: never mind the graduation rate comment had zero relation to anything else being discussed

Lol I am glad you corrected yourself bc wow. She very clearly thinks them going to school is pointless since only 25 percent will graduate. And why does she even know that info? Because she looked it up lol she had the racist ammunition locked n loaded.

This whole thing feels like a psyop. The pan to the Talarico sign in the video makes me suspicious. Is Jasmine Crockett somehow behind this?

What the fuck are you talking about? Have you even watched any of the videos about this? Maybe you need to log off the Internet for a while.

Her husband moved for work accepted it without telling her pulled the trigger on the house without telling her and she's just following him around dealing with his actions while she has no say. I've seen marriages like that. Shes bored in a new city no friends husband doesn't want to hear complaints so she yells at anybody near her house. Seen it before

she has no driveway and her dumb landscaping makes it hard to enter and exit the front. If the elevation changes were removed it would be a little easier to get in and out.

Instead of approaching the misguided and misinformed woman with a camera screaming “I can’t wait to put this online” how about you just politely provide her with the information that she is clearly lacking?
If she isn’t receptive, feel free to break out the protests and such. I’ll be right there with you.
Everyone seems to just want to be angry, and looking for the next viral moment.
What exactly are they even protesting? She hasn’t done anything but be misinformed. I saw nothing racist take place other than her flexing the cost of her house if you want to stretch that.
Lead with love people.

Come on. “THIS IS OUR NEIGHBORHOOD”? “YOU HAVE A 25% GRADUATION RATE”?
This is a deeply fucked up individual.

u/Nkosi868 19h ago edited 19h ago
Yeah, that’s racist.
Though her numbers aren’t actually that far off from the actual average, highlighting it for absolutely no reason is nasty privilege.
My feelings remain the same regarding the motivations of the person filming. They were seeking a viral moment and successfully instigated one.

I think we should be open to the possibility that this may not have been their intent when starting off the conversation.
When someone is confronted about their bad behavior, people have a tendency to get defensive, lash out, and make poor decisions. You would want to film that engagement if they were to get violent.
From what I could tell, they walked up to them intending to have a good faith conversation. They started by asking questions about whether they know it's legal to park on this street and whether they were the one's writing notes on people's cars. They weren't goading or making accusations, just asking for more clarifying information. The woman being filmed was the one who took it the wrong way, escalated the situation, and started yelling.

u/texistentialcrisis 19h ago
That the HT graduation numbers are down in that range is surprising to me, and would make for an interesting but separate conversation. But I agree—the way she used it, in context, was pretty fucked up.
The person filming, eh. I agree with you that that wasn’t the way to handle it (at least not at first), but man that pales in comparison to what came next.

u/bassplayinben 19h ago
I think the camera was out because the hostility and shitty attitude had already been on display.
