No. He wasn’t.
Granted he was lucky and an explorer.
But what he did after he discovered America…
Was nothing short of what we would call a Genocide today.
And he definitely didn’t look like that.
Use a real picture at least

In the context of what he did for the world? Debatable.
In the context of what he did for Spain and the west? Heroic.

Ah slavery and exploiting civilizations weaker then you.
What great achievements.
Oh and don’t forget the damage on the local wildlife.
Truly heroic.•

Too much time in the modern era is spent forcing great men to apologize for greatness. It’s idealistic but does not hold up to reality, it just makes you feel morally superior. Civilizations die on a hill of moral universalism.
I do not desire a world where doing nothing is the highest morality.

It’s just acknowledging their actions.
And seeing them for what they are.
Some things shouldn’t have happened.
But here we are.
We could learn a thing or two if we would acknowledge the things they did.
But it seems we rather stay ignorant.•

Oh no I know what happened with the Tainos of Hispaniola you’re mistaken to claim it’s ignorance
Like I said, demanding apologies for the actions of great men out of moral righteousness only rewards doing nothing.

Then why celebrate the man?
I don’t understand.
He doesn’t need his day and neither does he need statues made of him.•
u/XBird_RichardX NOVICE 10h ago
Why not
He’s the man that joined two continents
•
u/SwissDeathstar NOVICE 9h ago
Yes that’s true.
Deserves a place in the history books.
But just because it’s history.
But celebrating is too much.
Exactly for the things I mentioned earlier.•

I guess you don’t have to if you dont think your existence is tied to his actions, but mine are so I dont think it would be out of place to do so if you so felt inclined.
I am in favor of the statues being in museums to be clear i dont want to see them desecrated

He was one of the many exiled juices from Spain and the other 108 countries before that. If he didn't accept the mission, then himself and his crew would have been sent packing to another far off foreign land. The Spanish royalty fully expected all of them to die.
