Culture Is Inspector Barnaby a TV show with a good reputation?

Inspector Barnaby is a much loved series in Germany and is running for many years on repeat. It gives people a nice and warm feeling about the cozy side of english rural life, despite the countless murders in the county. How is it reviewed in England?

We call it Midsomer Murders over here and it's a well loved show

It's seen as slightly silly middlebrow entertainment. Not particularly demanding, never going to win any awards for acting or screenwriting. But not cheap or completely mindless either.

As others have said in the UK it’s Midsomer Murders.

It’s what I think of as very British Sunday evening TV where you just kick back and enjoy it, and wonder how a group of seemingly genteel English villages can have so many murders.

Midsomer Murders is funded mostly by Acorn and Britbox in the US these days, where it airs first.

It airs later on ITV around Christmas recently. It is still popular and airs in most English speaking countries where it's known as Midsomer Murders after the fictional county. It has used locations across Southern England. The UK does a lot of Murder Mysteries, Grace, Professor T, Patience, Fry and Cooper, Lynley, Silent Witness are all in production. Plus they do a lot of comedy mysteries in exotic locations.

Opinion is divided: my wife watches it endlessly - while I would rather gargle battery acid. Genteel murder (for the purposes of entertainment) and a paternalistic Police Force is a British thing, a combination of Agatha Christie and Dixon of the Yard. Another variation is Death in Paradise. It’s not ‘noir’ and, despite the death rate, it’s not threatening and never gratuitously sadistic.
The German Police series Inspector Borowski was much better IMO.

To avoid confusion in overseas markets ( Midsomer could be taken as a time of year ) it's renamed Inspector Barnaby, it's also why they chose to have a cousin take over from Tom Barnaby so they could keep the name

Similar vibes here but that's sense. Funny you guys have it on probably more than us these days. The irony is he would of been fired if that many murders
