Which Iphone to upgrade to?

I’ve had an Iphone 11 for the longest time but now it needs an upgrade (very slow, shattered screen etc). I don’t have many requirements for a phone it just needs to do basic stuff and take nice photos maybe (not the sharp way in which all iPhones 13 and onwards have started talking). I’m thinking of a refurbished 15 or 16 as these are the only ones available in my country and I’m inclined towards 15 a lot because well it’s cheaper and I don’t want to spend more money than I need to but everyone tells me to get 16 for reasons I really don’t understand. Please help me out in this. Which phone to get and why.

Ps Ideally, I would love to get a non apple phone but I don’t know much about phones so if there are any suggestions I’d love to know.

I actually bought a refurbished iPhone from Walmart. Have had it for a couple of years and no problems. It only costs $200. I gave it to my daughter and can’t remember which one. They have an iPhone 15 for just under $400. Just look at them good. I found one that was refurbished but still on Verizon
