Tool Backup tool Hezel gets a massive update!

Post image

Hi friends,

Developer behind Hezel & Denim here. I recently dropped a big update to Hezel, my music library backup and recovery app. (If you're wondering why anyone would want to back up their library, I've written a post here explaining why.)

I wanted to share some of the new features with you:

New Liquid Glass Design

The entire app has been redesigned for iOS 26. Big Liquid Glass buttons make the app really satisfying to use. The icon has also been updated, so it looks just as gorgeous in clear and tinted modes.

Backup Export

A lot of you have been asking for a way to export your backup, so I added a new .hezel file format that lets you quickly transfer your entire backup to other devices running Hezel. You can even export your backup as a .csv file if you want an easier way to play around with your data.

Select Multiple Songs to Restore

Earlier, if you wanted to restore multiple songs, you had to tap on each of them individually. Now there's an easy way to select as many songs as you want and restore them with a single tap. This works even inside playlists!

Play Music From Your Backup

Have you ever wondered what you were listening to this time last year? Now you can browse your backup from then and simply tap the song you want to listen to, it'll play just like that on Apple Music. I highly recommend revisiting your music library back in time, it's super fun!

Backup Reminders

Even if you don't enable automatic backups, you'll get helpful reminders when it's been a while since your last backup.

There are other features and improvements like support for collaborative playlists, more reliable Auto-Backup, and a simple way to manage all your backups in one easy list.

Some of you might already be familiar with the update since it's been out for a while. If you haven't tried it yet, get it from here!

I really hope you like the update. Thanks for your support.

Also, if you've been meaning to get Hezel Ultra, now is a great time before the lifetime and yearly plan prices change later this year.

Cheers!

hey it seems the link for Denim is broken in your post!

Do you have any plans to release an Android backup app though?

3

u/hotashonly Apr 14 '26

Thanks for letting me know, I’ve fixed it!

No plans for Android at the moment.

u/godspeed1003 Apr 15 '26

Now Swift supports development for Android too, so please give it a shot, I've been wanting this app for a bit now but till now it was iOS exclusive 🥲

They back up their music library

Daily backup man.

u/hotashonly May 08 '26

I didn’t know people back up daily!

How big is the size of your library?

1

u/Nirzak Apple Music Subscriber May 08 '26

Currently almost 5k songs and 15 Playlists.

1

u/hotashonly May 08 '26

Amazing! Are you an Ultra user?

Love both apps! Thank you for the hard work on these :-)

Curious -- what is the version that we are referring to here, I see 1.8.1 which was a "minor" update.

u/Dear_Studio7016 Apr 14 '26

Do the backs up overwrite each other, or do they create new backups each time?

10

u/hotashonly Apr 14 '26

If there are no changes in your library since the last backup they overwrite. Otherwise a new backup is created like in this image.

can I disable the taptic wobble when backing up? it pisses me off

u/Puzzleheaded-Page358 Apr 14 '26

C’est quoi au juste ?

u/ibizzet Apr 14 '26

library and playlist backup for Apple Music

2

u/ibizzet Apr 14 '26

just want to say I use Hezel and I love it, it has saved me once or twice when a coworker/family member accidentally deletes one of my big playlists

u/Intrepid_Beginning Apr 15 '26

Nah that had to be on purpose 😭

Great app man, bought it just to support the devs

Why is the post pinned by the moderators while not really following the sharing guidelines for devs? Makes it look like it’s some essential product which is quite the privilege and free promotion in such a big subreddit.

u/samplenull Apr 14 '26

It's great app, and it's been for a while already

2

u/Wolfpack48 Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 15 '26

There couldn’t be a more essential app. Playlists get removed after an indeterminate amount of time when your sub lapses. This app backs them up.

2

u/gord89 Apr 15 '26

I’m genuinely not trying to sound like an ass when I ask this: what is this app for?

I’ve read through the post and visited the App Store page. I can’t imagine a scenario in which I’d use this? I honestly think it must be late and I’m not properly understanding.

Is this for backing up music if I don’t subscribe to Apple Music?

3

u/Wolfpack48 Apr 15 '26 edited Apr 15 '26

Your sub lapses and you lose all your playlists. That's the scenario.

Where’s the update? I don’t see it and I just checked again.

1

u/N1ghtrain Apr 15 '26

Hello guys! Just one question. I have the ultra subscription but today I needed to restore my backup on another account. The “favorite” songs aren’t backed up? I can’t find it anywhere.

1

u/GoldenCurbStomper Apr 15 '26

Have a question.

I have Apple Music (say from Canada) I'm moving to another country soon, say Australia.

When I finally change my region and mode of payments and all of it.. I will have to start over because the library will be erased.

Will Hezel be able to help out importing the library back? Or 90% of it at least? If I do a backup when I was in Canada & then import it after changing everything?

I have over 9000 songs in my current library. I already have the app Hezel but not sure if regions affect it or something.

Thanks.

2

u/hotashonly Apr 15 '26

Yes should work in this case. Next update will make this account switching scenarios even more seamless.

1

u/RoughTea1074 Apr 15 '26

This looks great. I'm an apple music user on Android and MacBook pro.

I saw an earlier comment about not supporting Android, but would you consider a desktop version for Apple macs?

1

u/Live_Occasion2569 Apr 17 '26

Nice app. Thanks. But is there a way to include Favourites in the backup?

1

u/hotashonly Apr 17 '26

Not at the moment.

2

u/Live_Occasion2569 Apr 17 '26

Would be nice to have in future cause I only care about favourite tracks 😀

1

u/Wolfpack48 Apr 21 '26

Create a Smart Playlist of Favorite tacks.

1

u/Live_Occasion2569 Apr 22 '26

But Hazel doesn’t back up smart playlists

1

u/GearFourth Apr 18 '26

Why isn't the playlist's username linked to the profile username dynamically when restoring from Hezel, BUT it is dynamic when the user manually creates a playlist from the Apple Music app?

For example if I restore a playlist, but change my name afterwards, Hezel's restored playlist will not update to my new username, BUT any manually created playlist will do.

I want to delete music and start organizing after restoring it up from Hezel, but I'm wary of accidentally putting a name on there and not being able to change it.

Apple Music wipes your library and playlists anywhere from 30 days to a year after being unsubscribed, and being able to export as CSV means some programs and services can import your whole library. I personally exported my entire AM library as CSV to import into Lidarr for a locally hosted library via Navidrome/Plexamp.

1

u/ken22c Apr 15 '26

quick questions whats the purpose of the app? Is the target market folks who dont backup to icloud?

5

u/Intrepid_Beginning Apr 15 '26

In case Apple Music randomly deletes songs or playlists, you delete them and want them back, you want to cancel for a while and still have your library when you come back, if you want to delete your library and restart but keep your playlists, if you want an archive of what your library looked like in the past (for example what your replay looked like on any given week).

1

u/Pluckytoon Apple Music Subscriber Apr 14 '26

Uh ? Why the need for back ups ? Is there a library issue on AM ? Can someone explain me ?

6

u/TravisV_ Apr 14 '26

If you unsubscribe for a long period of time, your library mostly gets deleted. Favorites don’t get deleted though.

1

u/Live_Occasion2569 Apr 17 '26

Are u sure about favourites?

-2

u/marcjuuhh Apr 14 '26

What’s the usecase for this app? All music is backed up always?

0

u/Key-Ad-4256 Apr 14 '26

Good job honestly, but still no android app 🥀

0

u/GamingForLife420 Apr 14 '26

This app is not available for Android ? 😅

0

u/bisolin4o Apr 15 '26

What’s the point of this app? How could you even lose your music library to the point where you’d need a backup?

1

u/Wolfpack48 Apr 15 '26 edited Apr 15 '26

Your sub lapses or you accidentally delete something.

Would love to build for Android, but there are no native APIs for Apple Music like on iOS.

1

u/NatiRivers Android Subscriber Apr 14 '26

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is that not what MusicKit is? It has an Android SDK.

6

u/hotashonly Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 14 '26

If I’m not mistaken the current Android SDK is just a wrapper around the Web APIs, unlike on iOS where it can access the same data as the Apple Music app, making it possible to fetch 100K songs in just a few seconds.

2

u/Intrepid_Beginning Apr 14 '26

In addition to what the developer says Android users just don’t like paying 🤷‍♂️

I wrongly overgeneralized but my as a generalization I'm correct, Android users per capita spend much less that iOS users on their app stores.

No hate but isn’t songshigt just a better version than this?
