any bands similar to animal collective ?
either in their strange folk or pop genres or just bands with a similar sense of uniqueness to it
I’m honestly fine with anything that reminds u of them!

I’m glad to see them mentioned here, I’m seconding them OP. Specifically the album, Petunia.

Check k out Native Speaker by Braids. It's like if Animal Collective had a girlfriend. And Eye Contact by Gang Gang Dance for primal, ethereal electronic.

Spirit of the Beehive, Dan Deacon, and the album Stereotype A by Cibo Matto kinda reminds me of Painting With :)

Beach Boys made some weird music: Smiley Smile. I was listening through it and was reminded of AC so many times

MGMT'S self titled is basically an AnCo record. Reminds me of a mix of Centipede Hz and Fall Be Kind

Closest to matching the vibe out there imo is Akron/Family. Listen to the songs Ed is A Portal, I’ve Got Some Friends, and Raising the Sparks, then just listen to the whole Love Is Simple album

This was the first band that came to mind for me, too. I'd add Moon Diagrams (Moses Archuleta's solo work).

Similar? I dunno. But here’s some bands I haven’t seen listed here that I enjoy and feel like since I was into AC I felt open to like these bands too:
Neutral Milk Hotel
Fog
cLouddead
Women
Chad VanGaalen
Califone

Olivia Tremor Control is worth checking out as well. Jeff Mangum participated in their recording sessions.

love seeing literally any mention of cLOUDDEAD in the wild!!

They’re my first major foray into the weird. I got super into cLouddead and then subsequently Why? and Themselves back in the day! Finding a fan of those early years is like finding a kindred spirit sometimes lmao. So fucking niche

Why? is quite literally my favourite band in the world, and the only band I’ve seen more live than AnCo, if you add in me seeing Yoni solo and Yoni with Serengeti. NMH also a fave so we’re definitely kindred spirits lol

Geti mentioned! Being in Chicago, I am a huge fan of Kenny Dennis albums especially. He slings records and merch on insta and it’s cool to DM him and have a package from Serengeti himself in the mail the next week.
I haven’t seen any of them live but anco members individually a few times.

I always recommend Björks medulla to anco fans too, which I believe was listed as an inspiration to them at one point, specifically ‘where is the line’

MGMT’s second and third albums and “11-11-11” live album, Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, Syd Barrett’s solo albums, Tyrannosaurus Rex (the first 3 albums), The Incredible String Band (second and third albums), The Red Crayola’s first album, Mayo Thompson’s solo album “Corky’s Debt to His Father”, The 13th Floor Elevators, Silver Apples, Can, lots of bands.
Check out the MixCloud DJ sets they did during the Centipede Hz era. Lots of influences there.
I would arguably say that Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd is their biggest influence, even moreso than The Beach Boys.
You can hear that across all of their albums. Anyway, that’s what Geologist said himself, that it’s his biggest influence. But I can hear it on Spirit, too, especially the fascination with Pan.
I know this sub doesn’t typically listen to older artists, but that’s where nearly all of the band’s influences came from, from the 60s and 70s.
EDIT: Forgot to add Olivia Tremor Control. They’re from the 90s, but lots of similarities there, too. And of course, MGMT is a modern band.

Long Fin Killie! The first album Houdini is exceptionally wild, charming and experimental, also very ahead of it’s time, technically it’s ‘post rock’ but it kinda defies description

Nice to see Blind Man's Color on your albums list 🥲 they seem to have gotten lost over the years.

I don’t see enough love for bruiser and bicycle round these parts. Very reminiscent of their freak folk era

Woods comes to mind. R. Stevie Moore as well. Nothing quite hits the same spot

Dumbo Gets Mad, MGMT, Pond, Pill Wonder, Dan Deacon, Stereolab, Grimes, The Avalanches, Passion Pit, Pam, Babe Rainbow, Sugar Candy Mountain, Melody’s Echo Chamber, Loukeman, STRFKR, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, The Voidz, Gang Gang Dance, The Olivia Tremor Control, of Montreal, The Flaming Lips
Some very liberal picks in here but I hear their influence in most, with a few that might have influenced them.

Check out Caroliner, they’ve got that freak-folk and psychedelic chaos that Animal Collective can have but far more abrasive rather than poppy and bluegrass and Americana rather than electronic.
