Look, I get it, he grew up a major UK fan with a UK dad. But at the end of the day, when it came time for him to play college football, UK told Will Stein repeatedly to kick rocks. UK flat out told him he wasn't good enough in their eyes.
UK only cares about him now because he can help UK. But it was UofL who gave him the chance to play college football. And after his college football days were over, it was UofL who let him be a Grad Assistant for two years.
Any of us who could easily make the argument that, without UofL, Will Stein probably isn't in coaching (or at least not at this level) and is probably just in some regular job somewhere.
If I grew up a major fan of a school and that school later on told me to kick rocks, I think I would have a harder time getting over that and still supporting them.
Like many of us, it reminds me of all the UK fans who go to UofL and then say "they cheer for UofL except against UK". For many of us, it includes family members. It's so disingenuous. I can at least respect the UK fans who hate UofL. But I hate the UK fans who will bandwagon onto UofL if UofL is doing better. But even that I get more, as they didn't play for UofL.
But going back to Stein. I get it if you grow up a UK fans but had to go to say WKU to play football. Or maybe to another college because it offered a major that UK didn't. Those are more valid excuses. But you went to UK's biggest rival, us, and you played them on the field.
I fully expect Stein to pull some shenanigans against us in November. I'm sure he'll do the "L's down" at least once. But Stein, if you loved UK so much, why did you come to UofL? You could've found somewhere else. It really makes me wonder how much Stein even tried at UofL.
I know the one game Stein started at UK he did nothing and we won because Teddy Bridgewater came in. I'm not saying Stein was doing anything bad, who's to say his heart just wasn't in it to truly compete against UK? To compete against the school he loved and truly wanted to go to?
Like many fellow UofL fans, Stein is utterly dead to me. If I was the UofL AD, I don't do anything big, but I quietly remove any mention of Stein as part of UofL in the record books. Make it to where he truly was never even here. But I do wonder if Stein deep down was just a waste of a roster space, since he was clearly at a university he didn't want to be at. He should've done the right thing and said "I"m a big UK fan, my dad went to UK, it would be inappropriate for me to take up a spot on the football team at UofL knowing it's not in my heart to try to beat UK".
