Conversely I have been selling stuff for a few years on FBM and it amazes me the number of folks that message me on an item and I respond immediately and then nothing, many days before they ever read it.

To play devil's advocate, it's kind of a pain in the ass to figure out how to be alerted to, find, and read your messages if you're not a regular FB user. I'm not and, unless I'm doing something wrong, I have to use both the FB app AND the messenger app. It's a garbage experience.

Absolutely agree that the notification and messaging being buried in a Marketplace Queue complicate things but when I say I respond a lot of time immediately I mean within seconds of their first message. That's just pure denseness.

I get it man and I feel your pain but, like I said, if I want something and message the seller, it's through Marketplace on the FB app. Any further conversation seems to have to go through Messenger. It's stupid and me saying so in no way negates your experience.

Well you can send a message from within the Facebook app, but if you dont have Messenger installed with notifications on, you will never ser that the person you sent a message to in the Facebook app, responded at all because it comes to messenger.

Exactly

It’s because a lot of people are too lazy to take down a listing once they sold an item, so if something looks like a great deal there’s a good chance the seller just hasn’t taken down the old listing. So if you’re just browsing and not sure, you want to know what options there are.

That has nothing to do with what I said. When I sell stuff I routinely have folks message me asking if something is available and I respond immediately and they often never respond back.

Because they just wanted to know if it was actually available dude. Most of the good deals listed are things that were already sold. They weren’t sure if they wanted to jump in their car and give you a fistful of cash. They just wanted to know if it was actually an option, not have a conversation with you. You can see a response without opening the actual message and making it “read”. Some people do that because they do want to respond some day and just have adhd.

I sell on there, and 99% of people that contact me ask if it's still available and then never respond when I say it is. Some people lowball, as in offer like half of what I listed an item as (I block these people without responding). Some clearly don't know what they're trying to buy and ask dumb questions.

The good ones ask when we can meet as a first message, because they see that the listing is fresh and presumably avaialble, and they've read the description.

"Hey Buddy! I know exactly what this is and I want to buy it. Can you meet up sometime in the next three days after 5pm? Venmo cool?"

This is the only person I transact with. When I post something, I know exactly what it is, and what the buyer might need to know. If you don't know what it is, don't know if this product is for you, don't know how much it should cost... well, you are not a buyer, you are a shopper, and I'll not be transacting with you.

"Hey will this work on XYZ?" I don't fucking know man, and even if I do, that is on you. Figure it out and buy my shit or don't. I'm selling you a product with an MSRP of $100 for $30. Figure it out.

The marketplaces are for buying and selling, not shopping. Do that in your own free time, not mine.

I'm convinced that 90% of the people browsing FB Marketplace are just addicted to shopping, and not actually interested in buying anything.

Okay, but put the size of things! Some many people don't put the dimensions (even approximate) on furniture.

u/kungpowgoat 2d ago

The vast majority that contact me are pastors who own orphanages telling me that they’re interested in buying my used fishing spear and Chevy Cruze window regulator.

People are insufferable on online clasified ads whether buying or selling. Do people really expect the experience to be just like Amazon or something?

1

u/GuvnaGruff 1d ago

The flip side is I message and say I’m interested and when can we meet and then get no response.

Or they say they are busy and can meet tomorrow. I say ok. Then the next day I message for the address and they say the sold it the previous day already.

I'm really bad for this because I don't Facebook anymore, so I'll message and then for get for like weeks

1

u/winterbird 2d ago

I mean that's fine, but the item will probably sell by then.

Or try to lowball “$200 today?”

1

u/i_forgot_my_sn_again 2d ago

You never know unless you try it.

Some people overprice things because that's what they paid for it. Like why would I buy it used when I can buy it new for $20 or $50 more?

Some people want $300 but might not want to deal with waiting and will take the $200 just to get it done with or they really need the money.

Might meet in the middle and both agree $250.

Seller wants to make the most they can, buyer wants to buy it cheap as they can. I hate the reddit mind that anything below asking is trying to low-ball

2

u/Bageland2000 1d ago

There's a huge difference between, "200 today," and "hey, good morning! I'd love to pick this up, but I'm only able to do $200 cash. I could pick up right away. I understand if this is too low, but thanks for considering my offer!"

An extra 15 seconds and you start an actual human conversation. Same ask, but in the second example the buyer isn't an ass.

I’ve gotten so many good deals just by lowballing tf out of people

2

u/whiskey06 2d ago

I was selling one of those trendy Ciele running caps, new for $20. Some guy offered me $15 cash, right now if I delivered it. Bud, that's not the flex you think it is

1

u/9Implements 2d ago

A lot of people put up fake prices, bait and switch, put up a price for one item out of 25 listed etc.

5

u/bikemancs 2d ago

I listed an item last night. I got 5 messages:

1 was asking price with no response after.

1 was asking if it was available, from a profile listed halfway across the country.

2 were offering half the price of the item.

1 was asking if available (was local) with no response.

A friend hit me up and wanted it, so sold it to them. Why did I even bother with FBM?

5

u/aeroxan 2d ago

It's annoying because if you hit the send button, it just sends the "is it still available?" Message. One touch.

2

u/Bageland2000 1d ago

This is the problem. It enables the laziest people to browse and bother people with virtually no intent to buy. I always report people for "stopped responding". I think if more people did this, lazy assholes would have their FBMP accounts suspended.

1

u/9Implements 2d ago

It’s a toxic spiral because some people suck and will put up lower prices than they’re willing to take or will leave up items they’ve already sold. It’s also easy to put the wrong location on an item.

u/SilentJoe1986 2d ago

I still just use Craigslist.

2

u/taco_bell_sharts 2d ago

Do people list stuff on Craigslist in your area? Every time I check I never find what I want

1

u/SilentJoe1986 2d ago

Yeah they do. Its also a bonus that they cant creep on all of your socials. I dont want the freaks I could meet on fb marketplace to know where I live which would be easy to find on FB

2

u/RedBeans-n-Ricely 2d ago

My friend just sold something on there & some of the responses she got were downright crazy. One person sent her a bunch of messages with questions that were clearly answered in the listing (how much? Does it work? Does it have all its parts? Etc) Then sent a bunch of messages being all “Hello? Are you going to answer? I guess you sold it without bothering to respond to me!” It had been an hour, maybe 2 since she put up the listing.

FB is a constant reminder of how many truly disturbed people live close to you.

1

u/9Implements 2d ago

Sometimes people will have ai write a description that can be filled with lies…

eBay now pretty much does it by default.

3

u/RedBeans-n-Ricely 2d ago

And this excuses everything else?

5

u/IgnantWisdom 2d ago

Half you buyers aren’t even worth responding too…Either just want a 12 page report on the item with 0 intention of coming to get it, or makes ridiculous low balls, or seems interested and asks a time they can come by for the item and then just ghosts.

Trust me that the perspective from the seller side is 10x worse than the buyer side.

0

u/AbeFromanSassageKing 2d ago

Agreed! I had to flip a coin as to whether I was going to make the meme from the buyer's side or the seller's side... Interactions are definitely problematic from both directions.

2

u/urbanek2525 2d ago

First time I used FBM, I assumed I'd get email notifications. After 2 days I thought WTF, is the ad active?

Opened FB, had 10 offers waiting.

Lesson learned. Now if I put something on FBM, I check FB every couple hours. It's annoying because I don't really go on FB all that much.

1

u/AbeFromanSassageKing 2d ago

The only reason I still have a Facebook account is because of marketplace. When the stars align, some great stuff can be had, and sales can be easy. The problem is the star-alignment part. 🤣

3

u/s_brown_sounds 1d ago

I sometimes sell decent stuff at a low price. I get a million massages immediately. The only way to handle it is to pick 1-2 to respond to and ignore the rest as you work through it with those people. I also vet the accounts I respond. Needs to have a photo of the person and not be sketch.

5

u/worldsfastestsloth 2d ago

If they’re like me they only downloaded to sell stuff and they forgot they downloaded it to sell stuff

2

u/gregorythomasd 2d ago

Marketplace is absolute garbage

2

u/bobjr94 2d ago

Now Facebook says... this seller may not be likely to respond do you want to search for similar items from other sellers.... And they were right messaged him twice in a week and zero response.

2

u/LordHazlewood 1d ago

I think Vintner is a good site to advertise junk on.

2

u/KingoftheGypsies 5h ago

This happened to me on like the last 5 fucking Xbox X’s and some shoes 🤦🏻‍♂️. Drives me fucking nuts

1

u/buckeye27fan 2d ago

I swear half the stuff on FBM is just scammers seeing whose "real" accounts they can spoof or hijack on Messenger.

1

u/DoctorBlock 2d ago

I recently went on there to find a used patio table. I found one brand new cheaper on Wayfair. I'm guessing most of the good deals and decent free stuff gets bought up by resellers instantly. Probably the last time I'll use marketplace.

1

u/heyitscory 2d ago

Sometimes an account gets hacked and scammers list dozens of random posts for great stuff so they can scam people.

Then people get their accounts back.

But it's hard to delete 100 ads one at a time and there's no customer support you can talk to, so you figure "how long can people possibly bug me about these tractors" and ignore all the Is this still available!?! For weeeeeeks.
