I went to a chiropractor a few times, it made me feel better dor a few days then had to go back....then I changed insurance and they sent me to a physical therapist and my pain went away.

260

u/angrycrank 3d ago

Exactly. Physiotherapy is a legitimate health care profession. Chiropractors are quacks.

48

u/Xatsman 3d ago

Lots of chiropractors do physio too. Not that that is a reason to see one. Just that sometimes when they do help someone is not because of chiropractic nonsense.

Ultimately why go to a chiropractor who might do what you need to recover when a physiotherapist will for sure do what you need?

25

u/DigNitty 2d ago

100%

Most of what chiropractors do is effective and safe. This is because…massaging and stretching someone is intuitive and will generally make them feel better. It’s the minority of what chiropractors do that is unsafe or sometimes profoundly dangerous.

Most physical therapy is obvious. Some is not. Got to an actual PT and save yourself the trouble.

I threw my back out a few years ago. Couldn’t even breathe without my hands on my knees to take the weight off my back. Got a ride to the chiropractor and got one crack back into place. Instant relief, and I was able to walk out normally with only mild back pain. Still had muscle spasms for a couple hours but in a couple days I was back to good. I believe they can help with thrown out backs, but I wouldn’t let one touch my neck.

32

u/96919 3d ago

Everyone shitting on them here, but they basically just help to stretch out your back and give some temporary relief. In no way should anyone expect them to solve long term issues that need physical therapy or surgical intervention.

46

u/Historical_Course587 3d ago

People are shitting because it's pseudoscience invented by a guy who stumbled into it while making a living selling magnetic healing.

Arguing that chiropractic has its upsides is like saying a carjacker just wants to help you get your steps in.

u/Libby_Sparx 2d ago

K but I feel like the part where he made it up after claiming a dead dr who couldn't say otherwise told him about it during a seance is pretty important

Spiritualism

As an active spiritist, D. D. Palmer said he "received chiropractic from the other world"[17] from a deceased physician named Dr. Jim Atkinson.[18]

They do absolutely nothing that cannot be done safer and better by a legitimate physiotherapist.

That said, it it works for you then fantastic! I'm an old cat and my educational background is science-based, my mentor back in the day (think early '90s) was not just a competent CompSci professor but had contributed several RFCs in the early days of what became our modern internet. I don't think them being foundational would be a stretch, nerds would know their name.

Totally loved acupuncture and would defend it vigorously based on the weak correlation, which does exist to be fair. This isn't today when that's normal, this was the very early days of geekdom when that was not exactly cool but they were so goddamned smart that everyone just kinda went along. And honestly, I quite enjoy a nice acupuncture session and at this point in my life I don't actually care if it works or not.

Chiropractors do way more than “stretch out their backs”. Their “procedures” are known to cause damage to the body. There are many reports of them causing massive strokes in people because of the way they fuck with their necks. Shit should be illegal.

I've been trying to get my wife to go to a physical therapist as well. She goes and gets her back popped every now and then, and of course the pain comes back. The solution imo is that barring some actual injury to the area, training your back and core muscles will lead to long term improvement.

4

u/endlesscartwheels 3d ago

Physical therapists are amazing! Years ago, I hurt my piriformis muscle by biking too much. Visits to the physical therapist, plus doing the stretches she recommended, fixed it. I think she was also the one who recommended a better bike saddle.

Chiropractic on children is actual child abuse

49

u/whileNotWorking 3d ago

When my kid was born, a child chiropractor was suggested when they had issues latching at first. By the god dammed lactation specialist.

31

u/nat_r 2d ago

The pandemic taught us that just because someone has a medical education of some sort, doesn't mean that actually know anything about medicine outside whatever potentially narrow slice they deal with day to day.

244

u/PixelatedGiant 3d ago

It makes me rather angry when I think about people who have serious back problems that go to the chiropractor. They temporarily alleviate some pain that makes them think the treatment works, but do damage along the way. Unless it's just muscle tension they are very likely just making things worse.

Some of the things they do actually work. But you know who can do the same things without the additional quackery that injures you? A licensed physical therapist.

29

u/R3luctant 2d ago

Two crazy things to me are that there are always people you know who are reasonable in their opinions on things and you generally consider intelligent but go to chiropractors, and how when confronted with the efficacy of chiropractors they will say something like my person is different they aren't like that.

38

u/markender 3d ago

This is one of the most direct forms of darwinism I've seen recently

37

u/Average_Scaper 3d ago

Someone at work asked me why I didn't go to the chiro when I had a nerve issue in my neck. "If I wanted to listen to a quack, I'd go visit a duck" was basically my response. Went to PT, all set. I couldn't hardly use my right arm, now I can get back in the gym....eventually lol

3

u/picklesandmustard 2d ago

I hate when people are like “I love my chiro, I’ve been seeing them for 4 years for my back” it’s like, brother, if I’d been seeing my doctor for a fever for 4 years it’d be high time to find a new doctor. You don’t need to see someone for back pain for YEARS unless you have a chronic problem like scoliosis. Run of the mill back pain should get better with a good PT in a couple months.

My coworker was in a fender bender last week and messed up her neck. She went to a chiropractor on Monday. By Tuesday, she's complaining about shoulder and back issues. Then on a Zoom call asks my other coworker "I remember you know how to Crack backs and necks. Can you do that for me when I come into the office?" His immediate response was "No." I said you should probably avoid a chiropractor if you have a neck issue. She wasn't having it, just laughed it off. I looked around the room (she was only one on the team Zooming in) and everyone's eyebrows were raised. I still do not understand how successful, educated people are out here going to chiropractors to get their necks cracked! Absolutely insane

34

u/Mission_Macaroon 3d ago

I work as an OT and probably 75% of my clients see a chiropractor. I just "mhm, okay".

58

u/MathAndBake 2d ago

To be fair, once people are in enough pain, or encountering enough frustrating barriers, they will try anything.

I've had three corneal abrasions. Those hurt like mad, worse when you open your eyes. I saw an ophthalmologist and then spent the rest of the day taking unsafe amounts of aspirin and lying in bed with a blanket over my head. If my friend had told me that kissing newts would help, I would have been down by the creek in no time. I didn't care about anything except my eye not hurting.

18

u/thefoyfoy 2d ago

You said it. You can talk to your primary about an issue, they refer to to a PT, they shrug their shoulders, eventually you see a Ortho, they say 'something's wrong, let's do an MRI' the MRI doesn't show anything, and you're still dealing with nerve pain... I don't blame someone for taking a quick solution when there desperate.

119

u/Lou_C_Fer 3d ago

Apparently it feels good. I've never been. I did once dive awkwardly into a pool which caused my back to arch in a way it doesn't, and the zipper crack down my spine was one of the most satisfying sensations I've ever had.

I just had spine surgery a few months ago, but I've been dealing with the issues since 1998. I've still never contemplated going to a chiropractors.

79

u/Affordable_Z_Jobs 3d ago

Their propaganda is incredible. "What does it matter, im not hurting anyone." Perpetuating the lie allows it to continue to dupe other people out of money and can cause them actual injury. Go to a doctor.

I know a woman who is a massage therapist, homeopathic nut job mother and decided it would be better to treat her daughters with basically nothing but homeopathic remedies and massage therapy.

One kid has severe scoliosis (double S-curve) and will be debilitated for the rest of her life regardless of whether or not she has surgery, at this point. Her sister just had (very preventable) brain surgery for epilepsy. The exact condition that made her lose every memory prior to high school.

My friends mom was an absolutely lovely woman, but fell into the same trap. Stage 1 ovarian cancer, treated by "natural remedies". She is no longer here.

The charlatans need to be charged.

6

u/alwayssummer90 2d ago

I have scoliosis that was bad enough to need a corrective brace but not enough for surgery. My mom took me to a chiropractor every week while I had the brace, and having my spine mobilized regularly actually help it be more flexible to the brace (the guy that designed my brace used my case as an example at some medical conference).

I was 12-15 when I had the brace. I’m 36 now and I still go to a chiropractor once a month because yea, it feels great when everything cracks. Yes, I know that continued manipulation can essentially overstimulate the joints and muscles to the point that you only get relief when you get it adjusted again. Since I started working out during covid and strengthening my muscles I find that I need the adjustments less, and I’m working on eventually not going anymore so I don’t end up with a fucked up neck like my mother (who needs neck surgery soon). But the point of my post is that sometimes, in specific situations, chiropractors can actually be helpful. Sometimes.

I went once. It was to get a medical marijuana card before AZ passed recreational. I lied and said I had chronic pain after a car accident. He put his hand on the back of my neck and immediately said, “Oh, yeah. I can tell it was a bad accident!”

He then began to prescribe a weekly session for two months, then to a biweekly schedule after. I said that I’d think about it and left with his signature on my weed card.

It started as a literal cult in the 1800s and involved the energies of the body, similar to medieval humors. When the guy died and his son took over, he found a way to make it profitable. By the second part of the 20th century, they had enough money to pay lobbyists to get their work covered by medical insurance.

43

u/xile 3d ago

In the early 2010s my roommate wanted to visit a chiro, he was somebody who came into our tech repair store very often and they had lots of chats about his sports injuries. I came along just to see what was up, we were in our early 20s.

First they put us in a room and played a video about how chiropractic sessions are aligning your pelvic bones up towards the heavens, and how your aligned pelvis is a "mouth and conduit to which you speak with God."

Then they wouldn't let us leave the office. It was the dude and his wife. They were attempting incredible high pressure tactics, negging, shame, the whole nine yards.

Eventually we needed to be stern enough to threaten a call to 911

We left and they never returned to our store.

I won't presume that this is a normal thing for all chiropractic offices but I'm never going back to one

It's incredible to me how different experiences can be. I went to a chiropractor for a bit at the behest of my primary care. I had a mild dislocation of my hip. The chiropractor I went to said he refuses to just "crack" willy nilly, and would only follow exactly what my primary care said was the issue and request. He helped set my hip back and got me doing physical therapy so I could avoid a surgery basically, and said he'd only do any "adjustments" if something went wrong in PT and my hip popped back out and then he'd adjust my therapy to accommodate where I was at. Nowadays my hip is perfectly fine, I avoided surgery, and I think he only did any chiropractic to me (fixing the hip) like twice (the initial and then one time during PT it slipped early on and he figured me out from there).

Essentially, yeah most of these guys are quacks. Not everyone though. I wouldn't exactly risk it anyway, but just throwing out there how interesting it is to me how just like most things there's good and bad.

209

u/Schmigolo 3d ago

So your chiropractor uses the name for marketing but only does orthopedics. Some might say he's trying to help the ones who wouldn't go to an orthopedic, others might say he's helping legitimize the quacks.

39

u/MikeOfAllPeople 2d ago

Yea everything he just described is what happens at physical therapy.

31

u/DoomsdaySprocket 3d ago

Sounds like your guy would have been a good physiotherapist instead of a chiropractor.

A couple of people I’ve worked with swear by theirs, but when I start asking about what treatments they were actually doing that were helping, it was never actually chiropractic. It was something else like PT, RMT, etc. The one time I was referred to one, it was for laser therapy, which worked well, because that’s a real, evidence-based therapy.

It’s a very weird dynamic to be honest. Maybe they want to dip their toes in a whole bunch of different treatment categories and a chiropractor label is the only one that lets them practically do that?

11

u/CitizenPremier 3d ago

Some chiropractors are basically trying to follow real medicine... So, like, the best chiropractors can get is as good as regular medicine. So maybe just go to a real doctor instead.

51

u/Roraxn 3d ago

Any chiropractor that wants to appear professional will have basic understanding of orthopedics and physical therapy techniques. But anyone who takes sports therapy or physical self care seriously will have that same knowledge.

There are a lot of anecdotes in this thread of people saying "yeah well it worked for me!" And then they go on to describe those basic therapeutic techniques.

And thats fine honestly, they just got advice from a knowledgeable human about their issue and the advice worked.

They did NOT succeed BECAUSE they were a chiropractor.

What OP is describing in the meme is that he doesn't trust people who visit the chiropractor, brackets (BECAUSE they are a chiropractor)

Er, no. Any ethical lawyer with even basic knowledge of med-mal will tell you to stay away from chiropractors, because they recognize that people who couldn’t even make it into medical school become chiropractors.

Everyone hates lawyers until they need one. Or, funnier, they think they know enough to represent themselves in court.

Ya it kind of doesn't make sense that a quack career requires 8 years of training and a license to operate and your practice can be used in legal proceedings as evidence of medical care.

In my opinion all this shit should be legal and if you want to go get your back cracked by Dr Bones then go do it. But the government should not respect it, license it, anything. Should be like going to a fortune teller.

As a physical therapist for 15 years… they’re quacks. Their branch of “medicine” originated during the time of blood letting and leech therapy to cure ailments. Pain relief from a chiropractic manipulation lasts between 6 mins and 12 hours depending on if it’s a science backed vs chiropractic funded research study.

The proposed adverse risk of cervical manipulation is 1/6 million. I’ve personally met 7 people with life-changing effects from chiro manipulations. And, I doubt I know 6 million people… 2 threw carotid clots after a manip and had major strokes for mis-diagnosed neck pain. One guy was a jacked corrections officer who went to a chiro for neck pain and ended up with a flaccid left arm. Took him 6 months before he could do a push up again. And, a girl I went to grad school with got a cervical manipulation, and never played soccer again.

The risk is real. Don’t let them crank on your neck. Low back is safer, but you’re paying for 6 mins-12 hours of relief, if they do it right…

Not a bot.

28

u/marypants1977 3d ago

Can confirm. A chiropractor messed up my neck. I spend every day in pain.

10

u/ONEelectric720 3d ago

Real, respectful question.

Chiro adjustments are a VERY short term solution for my pain that works for a day, between saving to pay quadruple the cost for physical therapy.

Assuming they don't permanently injure me, which is a real risk, am I wrong for going because it genuinely, non-placibically makes my pain temporarily better?

12

u/Historical_Course587 3d ago

It's an odd set of factors that would lead to the chiro being a good value proposition:

  • For the cost, it's cheaper to use NSAIDs.
  • In most circumstances, NSAIDs will be safer.
  • The root cause of the pain is left untreated.
  • Self-education can lead to health and fitness routines that prevent issues in the future while chiropractic doesn't.

Chiropractic is in the same tier as drinking or smoking weed for pain management, and I'd wager in some cases weed is probably the better choice.

Try a massage therapist, it's half the price

4

u/ONEelectric720 3d ago

I do that as well. Not a doctor, but they relieve different pain for me. Massages relieve muscular pain, adjustments relieve joint pain. I can get one or the other (and days with both are best....massage first to relax the muscles), but if one kind of pain is more irritating that day, the opposite treatment won't resolve it.

Op, no bullshit, I had a friend/roommate who had a best friend who was a chiropractor. Anytime he'd visit, friends of ours would ask him for realignments or whatever the hell they do. I didn't want to be one of those people, so I waited months and months until I got to know the guy before eventually asking him to work on my back (I have spondylolithesis, L5-S1)

When he didn't produce not one crack from my back, he said, "You need to go see a real doctor"

135

u/hairydiablo132 3d ago

My dad SWORE his chrio was amazing, saw him every week. He was talking to me about it and I had had enough.

I said, 'So you've been seeing this "doctor" every week for 4 years, and your back isn't any better? If I was paying a guy to fix a problem and I still had it 4 years later, I'd be pissed.'

That finally woke him up and he went and saw a real back doctor 2 months later, he is fine, pain free. Wish he'd listen to me about his politics... One battle at a time

36

u/GregLoire 3d ago

Honestly the most surprising thing about this story to me is that the real doctor was even able to fix the back pain.

6

u/DigNitty 2d ago

Especially after 4 years of non-treatment or…straight up maltreatment.

23

u/BeerBrat 3d ago

Was at a NHL game and they announced after the game we could stay and watch a college team match up between the local chiropractic school and the commuter school for folks that didn't get into the state school the first time but might after a few semesters there. I immediately dubbed it The Slacks vs The Quacks.

I know plenty of folks associated with the chiro school. I don't take any of them seriously. The wife of a student there told a group of us about having her therapist help her process the trauma of one of her previous incarnations, a tribal member somewhere from at least seven lives ago.

3

u/Annual_Promotion 2d ago

Get your surgery as soon as you can. I am 52 with scoliosis and it’s too late for me to get any sort of surgery. So do it now if you can and it’s needed.

3

u/black-mario-bro 2d ago

I’m confused. You went from 1 to 18, and they kept cracking your bones or did not crack your bones (I simplified it cause I don’t know how to word it)?

7

u/mrschuesterfromglee 2d ago

They always cracked my bones. They told my mom they could fix my scoliosis through the cracking. Obviously it didn’t, I have no way to say if it made it worse, but early intervention for scoliosis is super important because kids bones are still shifting and growing. But the best intervention are back braces to straighten, not weekly manipulation of the spine.

3

u/DigNitty 2d ago

The thing that gets people to trust chiropractors is that most of what they do is really really obvious and therefore works.

Stretching and massaging someone will make them feel better.

The minority of what they do is the dangerous stuff you don’t want to stick around for.

Chiropractors in Australia ARE Physiotherapists. It's the American ones that are quacks.

Yup. Same with chiropractors in Canada. You have to be licensed and practice within the college's guidelines.

I hate a quack as much as thw next guy but a proper chiro thats does physical therapy and massage for musculoskeletal issues is not the same as a guy cracking your back to cure your colon cancer. But the problem is too many of these guys are in it for the scam not for the long process of physical therapy.

173

u/drewmana 3d ago

So what you’re looking for is a physical therapist and a massage therapist lol

Why not just go to a physical therapist and licenses masseuse, instead of a guy trying to do both while not trained to do it?

Then they need to be able to differentiate themselves from the cult witchdoctorery that the general person associates with chiropractors.

If you’re calling yourself a chiropractor but you’re a physiotherapist, that’s a problem you need to get sorted.

There’s no such thing as a “proper chiro”.

→ More replies (4)

30

But the problem is too many of these guys are in it for the scam not for the long process of physical therapy.

No, the problem is the lack of meaningful regulation in the chiropractic field. If the guy claiming to cure your cancer by cracking your back is licensed by the same group that licenses the ones you're advocating for, then what's the point of the license in the first place?

Granted, if the regulatory organizations admit that there's no evidence to support chiropractic care curing cancer, then they risk their whole house of cards collapsing because there's no evidence to support chiropractic care as a treatment for anything.

That's not a "proper chiro" then. That's a physical therapist who dabbles in bullshit.

How about you just go to one that doesn't?

16

u/breeathee 3d ago

It’s just a PT then. Which is great cause they’re great.

13

u/benji_indy 3d ago

That’s because chiropractors are not physical therapists and do not get training in physical therapy. They should not be providing PT services, and frankly, if there’s PTs to provide PT, what do we need Chiros for?

→ More replies (8)

17

u/theamazonswordsman 3d ago

There's no such thing as a "proper chiro".

Just go to a physical therapist or masseuse who's actually trained in what they're doing and not at risk of permanently injuring yoy.

25

u/Cheefnuggs 3d ago

Physical therapists and chiropractors are not the same thing. I’ve done years of physical therapy following sports injuries and would never see a chiropractor because they’re snake oil salesmen.

55

u/pro185 3d ago

Yeah I had back pain for years and years and I started going to a chiro that did a lot of deep stretching, decompression, physical therapy, and massage work. After about 4 months I was pain free for the first time since I was like 14 years old. I haven’t been back to one since then and haven’t had any lower back pain for a decade. There are plenty of quacks that will stick crystals on you and shit, but the idea of muscle care and decompression is very real and very based in clinical medicine.

Chiropractors are only a notch above used car salesmen in my book and you are crazy to let someone body your spine that way, but I’ve known at least a dozen people who got real relief from one. It’s not crazy to want to be free from back/joint/hip/sciatica pain that’s severe and doesn’t respond to other treatments. I feel sorry for people for whom letting someone do that to you is better than the alternative.

And when they can help with something an actual doctor can’t, do you really blame people for trusting them?

I'll get down voted, but I do believe there are honest chiropractors that help, however they are the minority.

Back problems are hereditary for me. My current and past family doctor (both MD) have recommended the combination of chiropractors and physio therapists, but also warned me of one's that are scam artists. The first chiropractor I went to was one of those quacks.

I took some years between without going until I found a reputable chiropractor who is very blunt with his limitations and will be the first to say when something is beyond his domain. But I will say, when I'm rehabilitating - my appointments with him increase my mobility much quicker than without. He also is not a "crack crack" chiropractor who just jerks you around, it's more like my physio appointments, but I find them more targeted.

That’s fair; I get what literally everyone says about them. It isn’t based on science, people get paralyzed, it’s all nonsense. I get it and don’t have any real argument, except for my personal experience:

When I was in middle school I had migraine headaches for about a year. I was prescribed pain meds, would throw up from the pain constantly, etc. Doctors told my parents I was making it up, and got me the dog I always wanted to see if that helped (it didn’t, surprise). I saw a neurologist who told us all I was faking it until I threw up in his office. I had a spinal tap which was inconclusive. I was scheduled for exploratory surgery (so just like cut me open and look around). We tried a chiropractor and my pain alleviated almost immediately and was mostly gone in a couple weeks. I still get migraines occasionally and going to a chiropractor seems to help. If it’s a placebo it’s been a hell of one for me and changed my life.

My chiropractor was also a licensed physical therapist. I am prone to pinched nerves in my neck and back. I can either stay home and suffer for several weeks, go to a normal Dr and get stupid pain killlers I don't want to take, or go to my chiropractor and come back out feeling great. No joke. Mixture of an industrial TENS, something he does with these little patches that have needles on them, and stretches. He never failed me. Then I bought a little portable TENS for home and I use it when I feel them coming on and I haven't had to go back lol. Regardless, the guy was definitely good at his job! He also helped my posture a lot. They aren't all quacks.

13

u/MoonRazer 3d ago

If your chiropractor is also a board-certified physical therapist, then it sounds like they're a real doctor that added 'chiropractor' to their name as a net to catch the nuts that only believe in alternative medicine.

Also, for the record, it's not a choice of "go to a normal Dr and get stupid pain killlers" or "chiropractor". It's a choice of "Physical Therapist" or "chiropractor". Given that your chiropractor is a licensed physical therapist, I'd say their net worked and it got you the care and treatment you really needed.

Do you believe any and all ailments can be cured by manipulating the spine?

The founder of Chiropractics believed the knowledge was given to him by ghosts, and he was against vaccines.

See a physiotherapist, they have science to back them up. If you want voodoo and magnetic healing and a much higher likelihood of spinal fractures, by all means continue to see a chiropractor.

It's pseudoscience and it's BS. It helps just as many people as praying does.

I needed to go to one during physical therapy. God he worked wonders. Bad knee had me walking wrong which kept throwing out my back. He was an actual chiropractor, not some snake oil salesman who claimed chiropractics cured everything from tooth aches to cancer like others I've been to. He was just "favoring this leg is making your hips uneven which is messing up your spine. This will help with pain, but you might need surgery." Then did an x-ray of my knee, said "okay, that doesn't look right, why does your kneecap keep dislocating, have they done an MRI yet? They need to do an MRI, yesterday." And helped push the dr.s for an MRI where I found out I had tears in my ACL, MCL, and my LCL was stretched out.

Dude though, the fucking back pain relief he gave me was a fucking godsend. It also helped take pressure off my good knee, but he was always clear that he couldn't cure anything and that pain would just keep coming back unless the knee was fixed and pressured me to keep up with PT. He didn't want long term patients.

u/FroggiJoy87 3d ago
