How the fuck does that get in you
319
u/thenotanurse 6h ago
It’s a roundworm, so usually you drink water contaminated with worm eggs from , and they just grow inside you. The real issue is that if there’s one there are usually HUNDREDS more. https://www.cdc.gov/dpdx/ascariasis/index.html

Never drink water from rivers directly, despite what RFK Jr. tells you.
50
u/thenotanurse 5h ago
I mean, don’t drink any water from anywhere that isn’t specifically potable. That’s how people get all manner of parasites and bacteria.

Why are people taking medical advice from the guy who managed to get infected with brain worms?

u/Spirited-Lifeguard55 5h ago
Ah, so that explains how the worm in his brain got there.

I can’t imagine having a 4’ parasitic worm just squirming around inside my body? What are the symptoms? She HAD to feel that. Around 25 years of internet, and that’s one of the most disgusting/disturbing things I’ve seen.

u/Johnny_Poppyseed 6h ago
Some parasitic worms can get much better than that too. Tapeworms from raw fish in the human intestines have been recorded up to like almost 90 feet long lol...

u/FrostyTheSasquatch 5h ago
But I love sushi! Do I have worms in me right now??
→ More replies (5)424
u/trowzerss 5h ago
Probably not, sushi fish gets flash frozen to kill parasites. So as long as it's thru normal supply chain you should be fine. Undercooked pork on the other hand...
113
u/Ialmostthewholepost 5h ago
Flash frozen for 24 hours or frozen in typical home freezer for minimum one week. I'm trying to catch coho and others for some homemade sashimi this fall.

u/I_Makes_tuff 4h ago
I've seen worms in Coho and Pink Salmon that I've caught here in the PNW. Definitely freeze those babies. And don't ever try Pink Salmon sashimi, lol.

Pretty much non existent in commercial grade pork. Private farms and wild game are where you need to watch out

Well, these things don't tend to squirm a whole lot, they just sort of chill there latched onto the intestinal wall absorbing nutrients via their skin

u/K4m30 6h ago
You eat food infected with parasite eggs, or touch your mouth after touching something with a parasite. Or you eat a gas station sandwich and they rebuild you out of worm.

Contaminated water or food. This worm had a long time to grow…usually better to deworm yourself before it gets this bad…if you figure out what’s going on.
The truly horrific thing about roundworms is that they can go anywhere. You can cough them up, they can come out your nose, they can even get into your eyes.

That's probably a parasite called Taenia saginata or taenia solium and the disease you get is called Taeniasis. You get this from eating raw or undercooked meat. This worm can get to up to 10 meters long and block your intestines and cause underdevelopment in children. This is nowhere close to the record longest taenia that I think is 20 meters.

You skipped the part were if the eggs of tênia enter in the your blood circulation this eggs can go to every part of your body, especialy in your brain were the eggs become cists and stay forever.
Edit: not forever, but needs rigorous medical treatment or surgery to take out
→ More replies (7)25
u/Ancient_Stomach7609 5h ago
Yeh, that is caused, if I'm not mistaken, only by Taenia solium that comes from undercooked pork, not saginata that comes from undercooked beaf. Rare disease nowadays in developed countries, but cause "healthy" adults to have seizures and the MRI scan of the brain does look like some tripophobia nightmare. Just look for it "Taenia solium cysticercosis" and you will have some nightmare fuel.
Edit: beaf over cow meat 🍖

u/Rafas363 5h ago edited 5h ago
According to Google, it's even more specific and disgusting. The normal disease is contracted by eating meat with larvae. Disease 2 is caused by eating meat with eggs, meaning your food has been in someone's feces beforehand. After that, the larvae hatch from the eggs, enter the bloodstream, and cause epilepsy.
Edit: disease 1 = taeniasis Disease 2 = Cysticercosis

u/Classic_Reference_10 6h ago
Can someone with knowledge also explain, once you have this, how do you get to know that you have this?
93
u/PIPBOY-2000 6h ago
The concerning thing is there are no symptoms at first. But after a while, depending on severity and location, you get them. For example, in the lungs they cause coughing and shortness of breath. In the abdomen, they cause gas, bloating, and nausea. In severe cases with tons of worms, it can stunt growth in children or cause stomach bloating.
→ More replies (2)57
u/Qbertjack 6h ago
Sometimes there isn't any major symptoms, you might only know because youll find live worms in your poop

Eating undercooked meat that's contaminated with eggs, or touching soil that's been previously contaminated with animal poop containing the parasited and eggs, and touching your mouth without washing your hands for example. How it got this big before they realized it was there though, I have no clue
→ More replies (1)29
u/Qbertjack 6h ago
They're parasites and they lay eggs in animal feces, which can then get mixed into soil. If you accidentally consume something contaminated with those eggs, they'll hatch in your intestine. Most people get them from contaminated food or contact with infected pets.
→ More replies (5)71
u/ReptilianLaserbeam 6h ago
Not washing your hands or food. Those things place millions of eggs that come out on the host's shit. You don't know where people's hands have been, so for the love of satan wash your hands and your food thoroughly.

Could you imagine when you realize there’s actual worms in your body like this? I just was doing some googling, and it seems like it’s not just one roundworm. apparently the larvae travel through your blood and then come out in your lungs then into your stomach where they can grow huge. It was saying one way to know is if you start seeing dead worms in your poop. It also was saying up that billions of people get some kind of worms each year.
This is the roundworm, which infects up to 1 billion people a year. Fucking hell.
Now I just googled what’s the longest worm a human can get and apparently the broad fish tapeworm can be 30-50 feet long (9-15m) in your intestines. wtf….
Edit: anyone here in the comments ever have the displeasure of having worms? I did not think so many people got them. Although, I imagine most cases aren’t like this poor women and certain regions are more at risk.

A bit different then pinworms, but hookworms used to be even worse. With no nasty winters to kill them, hookworms used to be endemic in the southern US. To the point that some old bigotry about laziness of the poor in the south is attributed to anemia caused by hookworms.

1 billion people a year? Like actually?
If that’s the case there’s two types of people: people who have had worms and people who don’t realize they’ve had worms
→ More replies (13)80
u/sacredfool 5h ago
In reality there’s two types of people: people born in wealthy regions where most food is worm free and people who were born in poor or developing regions where food is not worm free.
If most of your food comes from a supermarket you are unlikely to ever get worms.

I remember in Biology class wondering why the immune system has a while branch of its military (eosinophils) dedicated to fighting worms. Then I realized that compared to the average immune cell worms are basically kaiju. And that made it pretty rad.

57
u/Ok_Check9774 6h ago
“Ascariasis is a disease caused by the parasitic roundworm Ascaris lumbricoides.[1][5]Infections have no symptoms in more than 85% of cases”
“Infection occurs by ingesting food or drink contaminated with Ascaris eggs from feces.[2]The eggs hatch in the intestines, the larvae burrow through the gut wall, and migrate to the lungs via the blood.[2] There they break into the alveoli and pass up the trachea, where they are coughed up and may be swallowed.”
