My hometown in Maine used to have a pumpkin festival in which one of the events was carving out giant pumpkins to use them as boats to race across the pond.

Just found out they're doing again for the first time since covid.

Wow and they actually floated?

Not very well with a person in them. They sit low in the water and are VERY tippy, but that were the challenge comes from.

It's the best part of the festival since they had to stop doing the pumpkin drop. Too many concussions and broken windows from 100mph chucks of pumpkin skipping over the water.

Only video I could find off it. There's a floating target in the middle of the pond.

Giant Pumpkin Records in the World - Country, State, & Province - 2026 - Professional Gardening Tips

looks like (for 2026) 2,749 from Minnesota.

Which means I need to amend my statement and say that it doesn't even make the top ten.

A pound and a kilo are different things

I know 860 kg is only 1892 pounds. These monsters weigh in at 2,749 pounds or 1246.93 kilos.

My grandmothers planted pumpkins in the worst field we had just to feed the pigs. That's what they are good for. This and carving.

That pumpkin is as thirsty as a mini data center

Apparently this thing needed over 100 gallons of water a day. That's potentially 10,000+ gallons over a growing season. Crazy how much water it takes to grow one giant pumpkin.
