Seeking Empathy I did get addicted to my meds and I feel awful

I was originally prescribed 20mg a day, 10 broken up into two. Then because I lost weight it got bumped down to 10mg a day only. I took my prescribed dose for a year without ever wanting to take more. I couldn’t understand why anyone would want to.

Needless to say I thought I could tamper with my dose and add slightly more on harder days. It
Worked for me better at first but it had horrible insomnia side effects and then I had to take more to combat the exhaustion. I am ashamed of how fast my prescription runs out. I am scared of the damage it has done to my body because I’m sensitive to stimulants hence the low original dose. I feel like I have an addiction now, it’s been going on for about 6 months, and genuinely has affected my life badly.

I don’t know if this means I don’t have ADHD after all, or I just have low impulse control, or adderall just wasn’t right for me and I kept holding onto it because it did massively improve my functioning. I see a lot of posts where people say that someone who abuses their meds couldn’t have ADHD because there’s no ‘high’ to get out of it. I wanted to share my experience.

Seeking Empathy How do I accept that I wasted my potentials?

I turned 30 this year. I don't want to complain to much; I have a stable job that's not totally horrible and a home and a car and enough money to live and a little more.

But... I know I fucked up. I know I could have become "more". I fucked up school, didn't study, never did any proper job training. I just got lucky that I got my current position but it's probably it, there is not really a way up. I am not even just talking about money, but also about doing something that feels like it's the right thing. Something with purpose. Something that I can identify with.

I know I am not stupid, I had some potentials and even talents, but all is wasted due to my ADHD and late diagnosis and not great family life.

Now I am depressed, have horrible self-esteem, still not great in social settings... Also pretty lonely. I feel like it is too much to turn around at my age. I need to fix so many things before I make big life changes, I feel to weak and anxious.

It just feels like it's too late to really live up to what I could be. And it is really hard to accept.

Discussion Do you ever skip meds because you don't feel like doing anything?

Like, sometimes I just want to watch TV and do nothing, I also want to eat a bunch and enjoy the food.

But for some reason the meds just make it seem like thats not possible lol

It's almost like a feeling of dread that goes away after I take the meds.

When I take them I don't feel the desire for TV as much as without them. But I like feeling the desire? Idk. Its weird. Idk what it is.

Discussion Realized recently that the new lights really were the direct cause of me deteriorating mentally alongside daily headaches and constant fatigue.

The office installed horrid new LED lights a year ago. It happened gradually that it was just screwing with me more and more i just got worse at focusing feeling just not good in general, bad sleep, exhausted daily, gradually became headaches daily. It all slipped in so slowly i thought it was just me. I felt like a bad employee and was just angry and irritable and miserable. Cut to a week with an overhead desk shade and i feel normal again. Or as normal as can be expected in an office setting with adhd and constantly procrastinating on going to bed. It feels like night and day though. I should probably add to my support tools when im able but this is VERY functional for now and a lot of people even liked the shade at my office and asked about it too which is nice im not the only one that hates these godforsaken lights from hell.

Have LED lights been worse than classic flourescents in your experience? Because for me its definitely a resounding yes. Idk if its due to growing up with them or what. -> https://imgur.com/a/ay69AIf these are the lights in question. Does this seem like excessive lighting compared to anyone elses workplace?

Questions/Advice How do you stop doomscrolling

• Upvotes

I just cant do it, my mental strength to stop myself is Not strong enough.
I deleted all my apps that I was scrolling on before, but now I will do it with Reddit, or the internet or even my f ing emails,

I dont know how to stop, it’s an addiction, I will spend about two hours in the morning just scrolling mindlessly and I can’t bring myself to do anything else.

I’m currently waiting to get on meds and my mental health is very messed up Atm, I tried to start journaling as I was trying to do this artists way thing, but I just don’t have the executive function for that or anything.

I tell myself i will get up and go do things but I need time before I can start anything.

I know people said deleting apps but I tried that and still I find a way, im sick of myself

Seeking Empathy Severe procrastination and time blindness

Hi everyone,

I've been wondering whether some of the difficulties I've experienced for years might be related to ADHD.

I've struggled with severe procrastination, difficulty completing tasks, and time management for years. Even simple things like grocery shopping can take me days or weeks to get around to. Sometimes I plan to do something but don't actually do it until months later, or until the very last minute. I get distracted while working on things, forget to return to them, and sometimes spend five hours writing a short email.

I've also noticed that I struggle with my sense of time. For example, I might think it's been a year since I last saw a friend, only to realize it's actually been three years. I plan to call someone, but somehow 2, 3 years pass without me making that call.

I feel like I'm constantly putting my life on hold, even though I genuinely want to get things done. It's frustrating because I have so many goals and plans, but I struggle to follow through on them. Looking back, I wonder whether these difficulties might also have contributed to my decision to leave my PhD program after four years since I faced many distraction.

For those who have been diagnosed with ADHD, do you experience similar difficulties? How do you distinguish these struggles from ordinary procrastination or depression?

Thank you!

Success/Celebration ADHD is serious but it needs to be overcome

• Upvotes

I'm 18yo I've lived very rough moments due to my ADHD such as getting kicked out of class every single day in school, or never being able to work and get my stuff straight or do the things I want never get them done, now I always believed I had it, yet I only got diagnosed by a psychiatrist a a few says days ago, and I felt weirdly happy, it felt like I finally had a valid reason about me underperforming in so many things. But now that I think about it, it doesn't matter whether its valid or not, its one obstacle that we all have to go trough, every day, but so what, we've learned to work with it, and will do so even better, we will make it our strength and our reason to be better stronger and more efficient than anyone who could have ever doubted us, WE can and WILL do it, come on guys, its never too late, whether you're an adolescent right now, or 35, you can do it. I believe in me and I believe in you.

I'm mid 40s male in Ireland, diagnosed ADHD-combined 6 months ago, currently using Google calendar to plan everything and body doubling in an informal arrangement with fellow ADHDers in my job.

I'm also trying to slow down my thoughts by breathing deeply and clenching/relaxing my muscles to feel a little bit more control over my body (usually feels tired/ache-y).

Finally I use a little protein with my porridge as I take medication and I try get decent sleep to stay sane.

Questions/Advice How to tackle RSD and stop giving other people power over your emotions?

I’m a male in my late 20s and my friends are at their stages of getting married, settling down, etc and slowly a lot of them have closed doors socially and are prioritising their partner or their inner circles for their social energy.

Fair play to them, but it’s been really hard to have grown up with a lot of these people, and have cared about them so deeply and viewed them as my inner circles just to see that I don’t fit their circle and my life to them is viewed through all this apathy.

It all hurts so much because I care a lot about them and I feel so rejected and abandoned from them, and the rejection sensitivity just makes each little micro-rejection or pushback or disinterest hurt even more.

And I’m so aware that I’m giving them so much power over my emotions and peace, when they clearly don’t care at all about me.

I just don’t know how to move through this and let go and accept the situation and stop letting their behaviours/words/actions cut so deep?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Medication Vivanse heart rate and jitterness

19 FtM Ever since I started Vivanse (4 or 5 days ago) my heart rate has consistently been at 100-150 while active at work, and 80-100 while resting. Is this normal for the rest of you? There are also moments where I'm short of breath and feel like I'm on the verge of a panic attack, but those moments go away. I literally just got diagnosed with ADHD so I'd like some individual responses to this rather than just looking up WebMD or something. I also have somatic OCD pretty bad and compulsively sniffle a couple times per second which causes me to have breathing problems and a shortness of breath. Now that I'm taking Vyvanse, I'm worried that I have a shortness of breath sometimes because of Vyvanse. But also I've had a long history of shortness of breath because of my OCD. I also have confusion and forget the sentence I said right after I said it. But i also had that before taking Vyvanse. I'm a very anxious person and would just like some input 😭

(Also when I was 12 I had my heart scanned and evaluated and It was concluded that there isn't anything wrong with my heart, so hopefully I'm still ok)

Questions/Advice How do you deal with ADHD guilt??

I did nothing today . I have 4 midterms next week, am not caught up and did nothing today. Started 20 mg of vyvanse thinking it would help but I spent my entire day doing nothing.

I cancelled plans to "do work" today, stayed home, did absolutely nothing and now just feel like shit about it.

How do you deal with the guilt?

Questions/Advice Is Mari Kondo ADHD friendly?

I feel that throwing stuff out is the only way I can manage clutter

I like the idea of her technique but never sat down and tried it. The dea of deciding what brings your joy might be a tricky question for me

I think, som,e people get the wrong message from her and see her advice as a criticism or an expectation of perfection whereas I see the implied minimalism as a potential coping mechanism for those of us who struggle with clutter

Questions/Advice What even happened? Testing and results

I (25F) went and got tested last month for ADHD after being referred by my therapist. Today I went to get said results and apparently I don't have ADHD?

I'm not upset about this, but it feels very weird. I have had this therapist for going on 4 years and she has been pushing me to go get tested because she strongly felt I had ADHD. My coworkers who have it, also said it was very highly likely I had it.

My test consisted of a 30 min meeting with the psychiatrist where he asked me a series of, "do you get distracted easily, yes or no" type questions. And then an additional appointment where I sat in front of a computer hitting the space bar after every letter except X.

I feel very conflicted by this and like maybeeeee I should get another opinion???

*Edit to add: he told me that I am actually just a very overwhelmed and stressed person and the symptoms I think are ADHD are actually a result of me ruminating on everything I'm stressed about and that I just need to relax more.

Medication Am I supposed to feel like this?

• Upvotes

I'm wondering if this is a normal experience. I have ADHD combined type and been on Vyvanse for 4 months now (30mg the first month, then bumped up to 50mg)

When my meds kick in, I'm in a great mood for the first few hours. Then things shift. I know the "crash" is part of how stimulants work, but every time it happens I feel like I'm sliding into a depression or just burned out about everything.

I'll be honest, my mental health wasn't great even before Vyvanse, but on the meds, I get this spark… I work better, and I also have the motivation to be social, pick up hobbies, clean or just take care of myself. Then it wears off, and I'm back to my regular self, just a bit emptier

Has anyone else dealt with this? I know meds aren’t a miracle but I’ve been feeling quite alone with it now and needed to vent, any experiences are welcome :)

Success/Celebration Meds aren't the devil as my mom said lol

I just wanted to make a little position post, my ex therapist told me my ADHD type wasn't elegible for meds, everyone around me was ignorant and acting like being on meds and being a drug addict was the same thing and I was scared to even ask about it for a long time.

This year I had my gallbladder removed and for some reason that was like the breaking point and I decided I wanted to fix my life, I went to the psychiatrist and he prescribed me my country's version of Vyvanse, the change seems suddle but it matter more than I expected it.

It helped with my BED I haven't had a relapse since April, my mind is still running like crazy but it's like the volume is lower, quieter maybe, something if I feel like doing something I can just doing it, my emotions are a little less all over the place, I can have an argument with angry crying, my motivation is +1, I even have the energy to go to the gym now, I went back to uni after dropping out 500 times and I have good enough grades now.

I felt like I was already behind and it didn't matter what I did nothing would've change but it did, and time pass anyway so I decided to give myself a chance once again and give myself grace for the years I lost for not knowing what "was wrong with me".

The meds aren't perfect and I don't have a good day every day or a productive day every day but it's a tool that allowed me to make important changes in my life and I just wanted to share something positive with yall

Medication So tired of having to fight my own brain to do every little task

For those who are on medication, and suffer from the same thing I am, how long did it take for you to feel relief, if you ever did, and are you on a stimulant or a non-stimulant?

I was recently diagnosed with adult ADHD and it really helps explain why my brain will randomly latch onto something and I can do it better than anyone, but for everyday tasks it’s a nightmare forcing myself to do it. I’m desperately hoping medication can make me feel like my brain is actually mine, and that I won’t have to fight or negotiate with myself to get things done

Questions/Advice How come ADHD'ers are stable enough in school when reading books is a trouble for us?

Like I really don't understand how you guys did it. I finished school because of luck, but I totally failed to learn any subject and never had stable grades and indications to finish school. I could NEVER listen, or read book due to random thoughts. I literally made my mom cry because I couldn't focus and learn.

Yet I see many posts about trouble with reading, but somehow you guys still finish schools and have stable ENOUGH grades? how?

Questions/Advice Why can’t I show when I’m happy but it’s so easy to show when I’m sad??

One thing I’ve noticed about myself is that I can be told the best news in the world and show literally zero emotion, but when I’m sad, it’s so easy for me to express it. It’s almost like I physically need to get the sadness out of me.

For example, a couple of years ago, my biggest dream was to go to the Eras Tour. I was so upset when I couldn’t get tickets, but one day at school, my friend came up to me and invited me to go with her. Inside, it felt like I had just won a billion dollars. I was genuinely the happiest I’d ever been, but on the outside, all I could manage was a smile. I’m sure I had some kind of reaction, but it wasn’t nearly as big as what I was feeling inside.

On the other hand, when I’m sad, it’s almost like my body forces me to express it. I feel the need for other people to know that I’m upset. It doesn’t even have to be over something serious. If something makes me sad, it shows, and I have a hard time keeping it to myself.

Does anyone else experience this? I don’t understand why it’s so hard for me to express happiness when I feel it so intensely, but when I’m sad, it feels almost impossible to hide it. I’m curious if anyone knows why this happens or can relate to it.

Discussion Direct communication should be the standard.

Like I've noticed this a lot but society is absolutely filled to the brim with shitty vague language and conflict avoidance, like I just don't get it, where is this need coming from?

Like sure, you just avoided a conflict 'short term' but you made the long term consequences so much worse, how is this the gold standard communication that everyone is looking up to?

When something is broken we should be able to call it 'broken' without worrying about getting socially lynched...

Of course direct language doesn't excuse being crude, but you should at least be able to speak truth in the best interests of the group, and not just subjects that feel safe.

This dynamic is especially true in corporate settings where you have to watch your every word and action to not get fired, you cannot simply tell your colleagues that there is a flaw in the project they are working on without risking that everyone will see it as a status attack... Like I have seen people (who were fully aware) allowing mistakes to happen just because failing as a team was better than hurting the teams emotional wellbeing.

And this isn't just something that happens in toxic workplaces, I see this shit just about everywhere, it really makes me want to hide away in the Amazon rainforest where at least the python eating me won't claim that it's teamwork.

Questions/Advice I can't deal with this anymore

29 F.I am at my breaking point. I worked so hard to become a doctor but now I m in an extremely underpaying toxic job. I was laid off by my previous employer. Didn't even get an experience certificate. She never even gave an explanation why. I loved that job and used to work overtime happily. Yes, I made small harmless mistakes bcz on that job I was managing patients as well as administrative work. I keep making mistakes and get in trouble and people think I am lazy and incompeten.I know for a fact that I have ADHD but Psychiatrist don't agree they say you have become a doctor surely you don't have ADHD. Like what? So I m not able to start medication. I m also kinda ugly .I have no love life. Never had any. I also feel ppl treat me harshly even before they have worked with me. They create a perception based on my looks. Mistakes or behaviour other ppl would get away with I get in so much trouble for. I don't know what to do. I literally pray to get a chronic illness so I die bcz I don't have enough guts to make that happen for myself. Just today I had a job test I waited for so long but I missed it bcz of the insane traffic and my toxic manager not letting me leave early. I travelled from one end of the city to other to sit the exam but they shut the doors on me. I blame myself than the universe. I don't know what to do.
